I find it quite interesting that the utter inexperience of the Democrats' PRESIDENTIAL candidate continuously being exposed has caused all of the talking heads to focus on the Republicans' VICE-PRESIDENTIAL choice. Sure, it's always under the guise (or maybe in liberal cases, hope) that McCain won't live much longer (seems we heard the same rumblings about Cheney's heart conditions), but why is Palin's experience suddenly an issue when the same folks complaining today were fine and dandy with John Edwards just four years ago? Or those who thought that Bill Clinton's Washington inexperience was exactly what the country needed in a PRESIDENTIAL candidate in 1992? The focus on Palin combined with simultaneous support for equally or less experienced Barack Obama is as disingenuous as it is ridiculous. Give it a rest.

several of the comments have questioned mr. zakaria's motivation for writing this column, as if any question of sarah palin's qualifications MUST come from a politically biased source. well, in a sense that's probably true, in that zakaria and a growing chorus of concerned pundits and pols are bias towards responsible decision making in the political arena. that is political bias of the most noble kind, as it reflects not prejudice based upon aesthetics, but rather recognition of an untenable situation. bravo anyone who sees through the cult of personality surrounding this dangerous politician.

Have the casinos opened up betting on her not staying on the ticket? I want to get in on the action. McCain may not be running the best of campaigns, but the guy is not stupid. Surely, he realizes the potlitica landmine existing should this continue on much longer. I've given up on the idea that he will make a change for the good of the country, but I think he wants to win. Leaving Sarah Palin on the ticket is not a winning strategy. By the way, she's setting women back 25 years - we want to break the galss ceiling because a women excels in a position never held previously by a female - watching Palin crash and burn is downright painful.

Monique, Jarhead and Jonie - are you one and the same?

There is juggling syntax and there is babbling...believe me she was in a tailspin. Its the same old story...when your losing, throw some mud....get over it...Mccain's time has passed...his own party is thowing him under the bus...live with it. The only landslide coming is the one when McCain/Palin gets buried

Some conservative columnists are putting country first and coming out against Palin. Katherine Parker on NRO yesterday called on Palin to resign for the good of the country and said:
If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself.

Well put. Even if we concede (which I do not) that McCain is not too mentally confused to serve as President come January, there can be no doubt that he will not remain so for four more years. We're talking about this incompetent person becoming President here. Surely McCain knows this and just plain and simple doesn't care -- a fact that should disqualify him from public service.

Monique, Jarhead and Joni - are the three of you insane? It's scary to think any of you is voting

it was just black people that applied for loans and bought houses they could not afford - it was working poor people period. that includes every race of peope. many people making < 40K- a yr. so you can stop with the black people being the only ones that received loans that could not be paid back. with over 500,000 jobs lost so far this year alone in the US - all those people out of work, can no longer afford their mortgage and believe you me that nbr is not just black people. today people are living off of credit cards and paying the minimum payment therefore in debt for 30-40 yrs with <20% of their min payment going to the real debt. so cut the crap with saying black people. on the Palin issue am so glad that Zakaria told the truth - as the truth will set you free and any American who thinks this girl is fit is delusional - this is not made for tv movie time - this is reality. with this pick McShame should be exiled from American. Mccain/Palin=Unfit/Unqualified

Gosh, finally someone that has the courage to tell the truth! Thanks Fareed. The "Thanks, but no thanks" lie was bad enough and now we find that she's a dingbat to boot.

McCain is clearly showing that he make ill thought out political based moves and has the nerve to say that it is about judgement. Was picking Palin a good tactic or Strategy?

Journalistic ethics dictate that you include anyones name that contributed to an article. I don't see David Axlerod's name in the byline.

This is what happens when you choose for your running mate someone you have only met one time. Palin's selection as VP candidate is less scary for her complete lack of qualification, than for McCain's complete disregard for qualifications in choosing her.

one wonders how serious republicans can in good conscience vote for mccain / palin. its tantamount to treason.

  • Posted By: senoj @ 09/27/2008 4:51:27 PM

I think this just about wraps up my decision on who to vote for. Obviously McCain is suffering from a mental disease or something to pick this woman to possibly become the President if he should possibly be taken from this earth. SCAAARYYY!!! isnt it. Rustbelt Randy NE Ohio

having lived in Alaska, I'm quite sure she was referring to the scrambling of air force jets when Russian military planes would buzz Alaskan airspace. something that was rumored to happen regularly in the 80's not sure that it stlil does. and certainly the governor would not be in control of air force jets, but if i were a betting man I would bet that this is what she's referring to. though i'm sure that doesn't leave you feeling any better.

I agree with Fareed that she is wholly unqualified for the Veep spot, but having her go home or be replaced now doesn't allow us to see the magnitude of John McCain's incredible mistake in choosing her to begin with. One of the reasons he needed to press the line that Obama is unqualified last night is that on Thursday night we will all truly find out what "unqualified" means. We will see "unqualified" in action, much as we did with "Heckuva job, Brownie!" in the Bush administration.

Sending her home also completely disses all the women McCain has brought back into the GOP fold... not that I'm rooting for the GOP, but it would be political suicide to dump her now that she's on board. The GOP would lose the women's vote for decades to come in the resulting backlash. If she fails in prime time, then that might be it for McCain's campaign itself, but if he drops her it could have significant implications in down ticket races across the country. McCain won't risk that, even considering how much he's risked by choosing Palin to begin with.
