having lived in Alaska, I'm quite sure she was referring to the scrambling of air force jets when Russian military planes would buzz Alaskan airspace. something that was rumored to happen regularly in the 80's not sure that it stlil does. and certainly the governor would not be in control of air force jets, but if i were a betting man I would bet that this is what she's referring to. though i'm sure that doesn't leave you feeling any better.

I agree with Fareed that she is wholly unqualified for the Veep spot, but having her go home or be replaced now doesn't allow us to see the magnitude of John McCain's incredible mistake in choosing her to begin with. One of the reasons he needed to press the line that Obama is unqualified last night is that on Thursday night we will all truly find out what "unqualified" means. We will see "unqualified" in action, much as we did with "Heckuva job, Brownie!" in the Bush administration.

Sending her home also completely disses all the women McCain has brought back into the GOP fold... not that I'm rooting for the GOP, but it would be political suicide to dump her now that she's on board. The GOP would lose the women's vote for decades to come in the resulting backlash. If she fails in prime time, then that might be it for McCain's campaign itself, but if he drops her it could have significant implications in down ticket races across the country. McCain won't risk that, even considering how much he's risked by choosing Palin to begin with.

Do you think it would be possible for the Republicans to replace Governor Palin following a disastrous VP debate? She seems like a liability to the ticket at this point. It can only get worse.

Looks like the odds of that happening are going up - http://www.intrade.com/jsp/intrade/common/c_cd.jsp?conDetailID=638242&z=1222547767462

I take issue with Mr. Zakaria's suggestion that social security needs to be addressed. Social security is not in trouble. WALL STREET CANNOT GET THEIR HANDS ON OUR SAFETY NET. STOP GIIVING GRIST TO THE POSSIBILITIY THAT THE GREEDY MONEY MOGULS CAN GAMBLE WITH OUR RETIREMENT SAFETY NET.

It is so refreshing to read an article on Sarah Palin that unapologetically goes for the jugular . I have been waiting for a journalist on the level of Fareed Zakaria to lay it down on the line regarding this ridiculous appointment. Hopefully he will comment again after the VP debate.

Palin is obviously not a genius. Her rise to power seems to be based on her looks, glibness, and an opportunistic thirst for control.

I have read everything I can find about the woman, and the most damning information comes from those closest to her. She did not earn the nickname "Barracuda" for her basketball prowess; it was for her impudent sense of entitlement.

Anne Kilkenny, the local Wasilla resident who wrote the famous expository letter about Palin, said "She doesn???t take positions; she just ???puts things out there??? and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit."

It's high time we elected leaders that at least understand humility.

Mr. Zakaria, thank you for stating the obvious when so many are holding back. She is a disaster and it's glaringly obvious to anyone willing to look. Those who continue to support this ticket are unbelievably irresponsible and frankly unpatriotic.

It is really sad that McCain has basically endangered all of us with his choice. If somehow this man was elected and God forbid something happened to him and he was not able to carry out his responsibilities, Sarah Palin would have us in 10 wars, a major economic depression, and who knows what else. It was really painful to watch that interview. I am a woman and I want to see good, capable, intelligent women representing me. Not only do I think it is dangerous to have Sarah Palin as a vice-president, I think she makes all of the hard working, intelligent women look dumb and I just don't appreciate that. Being the President is like being at the top of your class. If she is at the top, those of us under her must have no sense at all.

Sarah Palin is an insult to the intelligence of all American's. And John McCain's decision to put her on his ticket is just another example of his poor decision making. To think that this woman could possibly be President if something happened to McCain is down right FRIGHTENING.

he key question is if Ms. Palin is qualified to be President. I hate the idea that we are being asked to use the "90 day wonder" model of training. Ms. Palin, who would have been a complete non-starter as a Presidential candidate, is on-track to be President in two months. Her background, experience, and public performance leave me thinking that her failure in that role - should she have it - would be completely understandable. I also wonder who would really be running things if she became President.

To me, she appears like a student who has crammed for an exam but cannot organize her thoughts. That doesn't make her a bad person, but it would be a "wonder" if she succeeded as President.

John McCain has worked his entire life to have his dream upended by this dodo? She's out by Wednesday; guarantee it. Sarah, just be real and say that you never fully realized the complexity, depth, and experience required for the job. I would love you forever if you got the hell out of this race.

It's bad enought listening to Palin in these interviews; reading the transcript is even worse. I wouldn't have thought it possible to utter such total, unmitigated rubbish in the speace of a couple of minutes. What an offense to those who have actually benefitted from the educational system.

Jeepmanjr and gtk you guys are so goddamn selfish. He is reporting this becasue Palin is not ready. Even top officials from the Republican Party wants the plug pulled on her. It has nothing to do with whether or not we like her. It???s about whether or not she could be president of the United States of America. She can't. She does not know enough. and interview after interview is proving this. Is partisanship so important to you that you would risk the safety of the American people just so a registered conservative could be in the white house? ..In a time of economic crisis? In a time of energy crisis? In a time when the initial steps of the 3rd world war are actually taking place as we speak? In all seriousness, are you people really that reckless and selfish?

McCain has written that he believes it is important to make fast decisions - "faster than the other guy" - which means that he may make mistakes sometimes. But he's "willing to live with the consequences." The trouble with the Palin pick is, if they were somehow to be elected and she ultimately had to step into the presidency, he won't be living with the consequences - but the rest of us will. Not a pleasant thought.

This sort of biased reporting is exactly why no one subscribes to newseek. What sort of intellect is required to do these jobs? Is it the sort that got Fannie Mae to give loans to people who cannot pay them back? Jamie Gorelick made $26M with no prior experience at Fannie Mae through her Clinton connections. I guess that is the sort of intellect you are after.

Senator John McCain???s campaign manager was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years as president of an advocacy group set up by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to defend them against stricter regulations, current and former officials say.

Actually, loans made to low income people, which is code word for those black people, had higher repayment than the rest of the housing loans made.

Fareed Zakaria is exactly right. So far, Palin has given every evidence to suggest that she doesn't have a clue of what she is talking about. She is even less literate on foreign policy than George W. Bush was when he started his presidency, and that's really saying something. What this reveals about the judgement of the man who aspires to be commander-in-chief as from January 20 is even more disturbing.
