Let's be honest here. McCain imagines a world of stark black and white, wrong or right choices. He cites dramatic examples and makes risky gambles. But let's be honest here. In the real world, where you and I live, where most of us are damn well certain of how many homes we have, the consequences of our choices aren't quite so stark as he imagines. We live in a world of nuance, a world of technology and open knowledge, we live in a place where every possible consequence has to be imagined and anticipated. Where victory and defeat are empty words when we can't afford to heat our homes, or or feed our families.

In this complicated, nuanced world, we choose our words carefully, we talk to our enemies as well as our allies, and we stop and think about what we do before we do it. Otherwise we face financial ruin, place our families in danger, and continue to harm the planet in disastrous ways.

For McCain, they are either with us or against us. Heroes or Villains. Let's be frank. That attitude, the consequences of that attitude, now threaten to destroy our nation. We choose whether we continue to use 20th century attitudes, even 19th century attitudes, in a 21st century world. Let's pray that we all consider the consequences of our actions very carefully.

    Especially in the voting booth.

To "This Complicated World:" Very well stated, thanks! We have brains for a reason. If we choose the one who impulsively moves one chess piece without studying the whole board, the entire world will be endangered. Obama's the best gift our political arena's been given in a long time.

McCain? McCain has character??? When, where, how???

He is such a poor excuse of a man. Let's go back to his most formidable years as a child, through pre-teens, young adult-hood, middle age, and old age.

Here's his character traits in black and white...
    Failed educationally
Rescued by daddy on more than one ocassion
Self proclaimed hero...I suppose he was the one and only POW that ever lived - ugh!
Leaves wife and children coming back from war due to crippled wife - disgusting!
Dumps wife and chases some brainless bimbo model with $$$ - opportunist!
Rapes America along with Bush - irreprehensible!
Trying to seperate himself from his own party, which he still rubs elbows with - sly!
Resorts to lies, misleading statements, and all for the sake of money and power - ignorant!

I could go on and on, but I thnk these are enough character FLAWS to consider before casting a vote.

    OBAMA 08!

McCain is a phony. He has used his Prisoner status to unfair advantage over the bones of the true heroes of the Vietnam War..The 50,000+who never were able to live their lives to the fullest. As az Vietnam War Veteran I am disguted with his continual seeking sympathey for his so called suffering as a Prisoner. He he was a Regular Naval Officer. He was not forced to serve in the Navy.He knew the possible consequeces and accepted them.I knew of some of those who perised in that War.Any one of them would have been more the happy to have been able to trade places with McCain.I am no supporter of Obama but i hope he beats McCain like a drum.

BS.McCain is the ultimate opportunist. He will say or do anything to promote his own image. He is hot tempered and will shoot from the hip.He does not have the demeanor of a President. As a Vietnam War Veteran i will throw up if i see one more infomercial about his being a Prisoner of War and playing on the sympathy of the voters. He was no hero,he did what any Regular Navy Officer should have done.He perservered..Unfortunately,50,000+ others left their all in Vietnam. They are the forgotten true heroes.McCain has capialized on the bones of these brave souls.I am no Obama supporter, however, I hope he3 beats McCain like a Drum.

I am close to John McCain's age. I have seen many, many John McCains in my lifetime. Some I with whom I have worked. Initially, I have admired them because they offer a unique vision and determination to attain the goals of that vision. They are so attractive when you see an environment of greed, self-interest, and power lust warping the the society and distorting its ideals. As a youth I remember the television program Omnibus presenting Ferlinghetti's Coney Island of the Mind. Throughout my life the refrain "I am waiting, I am waiting, for a rebirth of wonder" has resonated. I have always had hope. The consequence has been that I have seen the individuals who personified that hope killed, denigrated, vilified, and/or ignored. When John McCain began establishing the record that he speaks about today, I greatly admired him, as I had admired another Arizona senator, Barry Goldwater. Finally, a person who was a template of the ideals I sought in a leader.

Many people rant about the extended process we have developed to elect a president. A Canadian friend just bragged about his country's two month campaigns. As for me I am so thankful for the extended review of those who would pretend for the office of president. I just can't imagine what would have been the outcome if this election campaign had been two months long. I know it has dashed the hopes of many, but let me tell you what it taught me. This campaign has been gruelingly and pressure filled, just as the job waiting at the end. It has shown how our potential leaders would perform caught in that vice. I have recalled the John McCain template his previous actions and writings has built and placed it over the John McCain of the last nine months. If I were a quality control inspector I would reject this newly fabricated John McCain. If I were a cynic I would say that there never was "the old John McCain". But what it boils down to is that we must always be skeptical of those who parade their past with bravado and their moral and patriotic deeds too loudly, then prescribe to us what is best. I think that this long, long road has tested the candidates well, Its duration brought out John McCain. Whether this was what John McCain was and always has been doesn't matter. What it is is the John McCain who is now wanting to be our leader. When you seek to take that high moral ground, you must take it to be respected. Once taken you must keep it. Given the candidate's actions over the last three months I see either an impostor or a hypocrite. Over the past 25+ years I have been told by John McCain who John McCain is and this is no John McCain.

McCain has a lot in common with Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. I have followed the career of Chavez and know the dangers of that guy.

McCain is unpredictable and does not like to follow good advice. He is not cerebral, rational and professorial, like Obama.

McCain likes to act rash, unconsulted, he does not like to take counsel, to deliberate together with others, does not like to confer. He is impetuos, and self righteous.

That is good for the military, but that is catastrophic for a President of the USA, or the World at large.

McCain is too aggressive like we saw in the debate of Oxford, Mississippi. He does not respect the other candidate. He is full of contempt and arrogance. Contemptuous of others and filled with derision.

Now I can see much more clearly the motivations of the man. He learned the righteous indignation and scorn toward doubters of his ideas or his actions from his father's seemingly compulsive demand for respect for his own honesty, even within his family. This almost pathological need to be seen as "heroid" and "honest", rather than virtues, are in fact severe limits on one being able to realistically appraise and adapt to actuality. Even more reason to be wary in giving this man command of the ship of state. I, for one, am ready for pragmatism, rationality, compromise, clear thinking, innovation--anything but hero worship and blind loyalty. .

I find it very interesting that every time some one makes a comment about "the facts"of John MCCain's history; they are called all kinds of names by the Republicans - who support him and the ideology of the VERY RIGHT WING/GOP. They accuse anyone who is not "for" John MCCain of being "brainwashed". The fact is this: those who attack in that manner are going against the very VALUES that the REPUBLICANS ONCE DEFENDED. Republicans have had a history of calling all Democrats: IMMORAL LEFT WING RADICALS. They went after Biil Clinton for LYING ABOUT SEX. The issue was "adultery" and then it became "lying".

Both John MCCain and Cindy MCCain began their relationship with lies and adultery. Then they lied about how and why they adopted their daughter. They claim that MOTHER THERESA talked Cindy into it. Records show that Mother Theresa was on the other side of the planet when Cindy was in India. Cindy MCCain went on Jay Leno and said that they had lied to each other about their ages. And then during the RNC, Cindy retold the story of the "age lie"; and everyone laughed at the story. Over the past two months John MCCain has been caught telling the most outrageous lies....lies that are easily exposed. We all know by now that John MCCain, George Bush and their team - all lied to us to get us into this war. And now, they have presented Gov. Sarah Palin to us. She lied about the BRIDGE; the JET being sold on EBAY; TROOPERGATE; ETC..

The Democrats did not make any of this up. All of this has been proven to be true. The Republican Party is in such CHAOS; THEY WOULD NOT EVEN USE THE WORD "REPUBLICAN" DURING THEIR CONVENTION. And now, many of their candidates, who are running for office: DO NOT WANT TO "PUBLICLY DECLARE" THEMSELVES AS REPUBLICAN. They are using the term: GOP IN THEIR ADVERTISEMENTS. The problem is that not many young people know that GOP stands for - GRAND OLD PARTY. Everyone knows that the REPUBLICAN PARTY'S days are numbered.

Their demise began when they IMPEACHED President Bill Clinton for lying about sex. THAT WILL FOREVER BE IN THEIR HISTORY. THE WORLD LAUGHED AT THEM FOR THAT. WHY? The very people who went after him; were guilty of the exact same thing...some worst. Newt Gingrich was dating an intern...evern though he was married....while he was leading the charge against Bill Clinton for being sexually involved with an intern. And then, over the past seven years: Many Reupblicans in Congress got in trouble for all kinds of illegal sexual behavior. That was only one part of the many scandals involving them. For these reasons...and so many more: THEIR CONSTITUENTS ARE VOTING THEM OUT OF OFFICE.

So for all of those who want to blame the MEDIA and the LEFT WING DEMOCRATS for all of the REPUBLICAN PARTY'S PROBLEMS: You are the ones who are truly blind. You are choosing to deny the truth. THAT IS WORST THAN BEING BRAINWASH

So McCain thinks officers have the prerogative to publicly denigrate the decisions of the officers appointed over them? Explains a lot. Personally, I prefer the Wes Clark dictum: if it comes to the point where you disagree with your superiors so much that you cannot follow their lawful orders, it's time to depart. It's what he did, it's what I did, it's what a lot of officers and NCO's have done.

Is this McCain's way of communicating with the voters, using small words? He can't make the untrue truer using children's books. Children's books may be a great income for him, but does not serve children well... the fatalism theme could cause kids to smoke weed, or to just not have much effort.

Obama is already admired by children; children will be hopeful with Obama in office.

Fatalism is depressing. Imagine a public fatalism joke from McCain just after 9/11, that would have been horrible for this country... and the world.

Yes, this is a nice article. Never doubted McCain being an honorable citizen.
But today's economy and the way America is perceived by the world needs a different kind of leadership.
Sorry, McCain you will not get my vote but I promise to read your next book.
