Why does this have to be about race? I don't care about the candidates' race, I care about their stands on the important issues of this time. Black, white, male, female, straight, gay . . . I couldn't care less. I want the right person for the job. It's very sad to me to think everyone will focus solely on race if McCain wins. I think having a black woman as president would be wonderful, to be frank, but I wouldn't vote for her unless I thought she was the strongest candidate. And you know why? Because sadly enough, the success of her presidency would determine people's attitudes toward future female and black presidential candidates.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said it is hard to listen to pleas for blacks to "wait" when injustice has reigned for so long, and he's right. But I'm also sure he would not vote for someone because because he was black. He would make sure the one he voted for was the best person for the job. I wish everyone could think that way. If I vote against Obama, it will not be because he's black. It will be because of who I decide is best able to lead this country.

Comment: Nobody is owed anything. If he losses it will be for the good of the country. His views are way to the left of mainstream America. If African -americans can't accept the election results ,I suggest they go backto Africa.

I think some of these comments are completely missing the point of the article. A group of previosuly disenfranchised group is now participating in democracy. Not only does Obama represent change in politics but a change towards inclusive politics. The face of politics has liteterally changed for the better. A bi-racial nominee & a woman Vp nominee. I think it is fantastic that more Americans are participating in democracy regardless of thier motivations. It is a legitimate fear of the unknown. What happens next? Many democrats believe both black & white that the 2004 election was unjustly won by Bush. The election results were shady.
We have to face the reality that more people now than ever are participating and by these comments we can see how real racism exsist. I fear four more years of Bush policies, McCain's Forigen policy to invade, invade invade. We need now more than ever a culture of hope, change, a look to the future rather than a policy of fear. Which this policy of fear includes racisim.

People of all races fear for what this country will become if Barack Obama loses.

    • Posted By: globaby @ 09/28/2008 12:54:53 PM

Al lot of people also fear what will become of our country if Obama wins. We are a nation of hand-outs now. Will the middle class continue to support those who do not wish to work, those who traffic in drugs, those who collect welfare for children they had just to collect. Obama will just give us more of the same. I do not see any positive changes for the good if he wins

First all of the Hillary voters were angry about her losing the nomination and now the Obama voters mostly black are saying how they are voting for the first time and if Obama dose'nt win how they are going to be mad and protest in the streets. Democrates amaze me on how they are always playing the victimization card.

All of you so called progressive people need to grow up and realize that when you lose and you will that it's because most average americans don't agree with your entitlement values.

So when you lose, and you will GET OVER IT!

LOL...ignorant, ignorant man. You stated, "...because most average americans don't agree with your entitlement values."

And let me see, white fat-cat bureaucrats are simply afraid of losing their white supremist seats in the Whitehouse. What are you afraid of, retaliation? LOL. I hate to burst your bubblegum chitter chatter, but I am an American and proud we still live in a democratic state...yes...democratic state and thus I shall vote in the direction that will ensure my democracy till the day I die, which won't be anytime soon.
I am a very proud, white woman, educated and with ethical human values and not a self-professed bigot and racist, ignorant to wanting change that will rescue this country from the pitiful leadership we've had to endure.

Let the most educated (can't argue with that), in touch with the middle class (1 home/1 car...hmmm compared to whom???), and most ethical (fair and honest...can argue with that either) candidate win...OBAMA 08*

Everyone needs to stop saying that Obama doesn't have enough experience, neither does McCain. Neither has been president before and as far as I am concerned the only way one gets experience at a job is by DOING that job. Now where McCain has Obama beat in the experience department is being a prisoner of war, but is that enough to elevate him to the highest office in the land? come on people this is not a joke this is serious business there will be no do overs if you get it wrong, Instead you will be stuck with a mistake for the next four years. If I were you I would think long and hard about my choice.

What is sad is that this is a black and white issue. It seems odd tome that the African American community seems to ignore the fact that Obama is half white so it is just as easy to say that he is European American. Fortunately in this day and age I would suggest that being bi-racial isn't as problematic as it was in the past. One thing that I like about Obama is that I do not see him running on race or what his plans are for one group of people. Of course he does not have to run on race, just that fact that he is in the position he is in gives HOPE, I would say, to minorities as a whole. What I am disappointed about is his pick for VP. Biden is a joke and I???m not quite sure how he keeps getting elected except that people remember his name when it appears on a ballot. If Obama was for a new Washington, he surely wouldn't have picked him as he surely is not a representative of a new Washington.
Now I believe Obama has the potential to do a lot of good for this country, but then again so does John McCain. McCain is not an average toe the line Republican and is certainly not afraid of following a direction opposite of the same party. Should the African American community protest if Obama is not elected? That is ridiculous. What value is there in a protest if you don???t win? If a candidate does not win it is basically their own fault. To win you need to do one thing, and that is convincing the majority of people that you are qualified and should be President. Obama is young. Whether he wins or not, there will be another election in four years and he has the charisma to give it another shot then if he does not win this November. If he wins and does well, I would surmise that he will be in office for eight years. If he wins and does poorly, he may be able to pull win a second election, Bush did, but then again he has had a difficult Presidency and has been faced with difficult decisions. It will not be enough for Obama to appeal just to African Americans he has to appeal to a vast majority of people as there simply are not enough African Americans to put him in office. This country is vastly divided about who should be president, just look at the polls. Where do we go in the future as a country and who do we pick as a leader? I hope it is not based upon race but upon ability. I would hope that if he wins it is upon his merits not upon the color of his skin, but then again I am glad that he has provided hope. The fact the Obama is where he is today is because the attitudes and perceptions about the perceptions of race in America are changing but there is still need for improvement.

I do believe Obama and his campaign cleverly - and sadly - used race to take down Hillary; a long time supporter of the African-American community, suddenly was - along with her hubby, who´s office is in Harlem - labeled a "racist"...
All to win....all means allowed in "love and war"? No.

And yes; Biden is a joke. No clue why he went for the VERY old Washington guy - although he has tried to "paint him up in new fresh colors", talking about how he is commuting to Washington every day....
Bad judgement, not having the balls to pick Hillary - would have been the dream ticket; easy match! But that ego....that ego.....

        SO TRUE................

    • Posted By: Big TMM @ 09/28/2008 12:28:26 PM

It DOES have something to do with race.

A man with constitutional law experience from Harvard, dealing with community action from a city as big as Chicago vs. a man finsihing in the bottom 10% from his school with a VP pick that just received her foreign passport...if the 2 presidential candidates were white, Obama would be considered a slam dunk.

If a black presidential candidate had a 17 year old daughter pregnant out of wedlock, there would be no possibility of that candidate being electable.

Obama is half white, but LOOKS African American...and you can't tell me that at least one white person you know has a problem with that.

Jackie Robinson had to go thru multiple insults and death threats to pave the way for intergration in sports. Muhammad Ali became a great figure to Americans as a RESULT of his unwavering stance of the Vietnam War and his embrace of Islam religion (at the time, many blacks did not agree with his views).

I truly wish racism would not be a mjor part of this election...for ALL Americans. But it's foolish to think that there are not both white and black people making their decisions because of the way they view race.

This election should not be about the color of your skin. It should be about who is best prepared to lead our nation in a time of crisis. If you beleive Obama will magically change your lives you will be disappointed. Everytime he has had the opportunity to make a difference he has failed. When he could of made a difference in Chicago he choose to endorse the Chicago Machine. He only won his first elections by having any credible opponents thrown off the ballot. Check his voting record before you say he is about change. When he could of helped the students in Chicago receive a better education he choose to support the Teachers Union. The teachers in Chicago average pay is above $80,000.00 a year for working 5 1/2 hours a day nine months out of the year while the schools cut science labs and language classes which every student needs to go to college. When he could of passed a bill to allow stricter penalties for crimes committed with guns by gang members he didn't. He took campaign money from Rezko when Rezko was making the people who live in his low income housing projects go without heat because he said he didn't have the money to pay the heating bills. When he could of helped the tiny baby born alive during an abortion by passing a law to make hospitals and doctor give the baby medical care it needed to survive Obama spoke up and said this child had no rights to medical care because it wasn't a person. When you cast your vote please think of these things. Close your eyes and imagine a tiny premature baby forced into this world by an abortion laying all by itself gasping for breath trying to live but won't because he believed it deserves medical attention. Think of the families who have buried their child who was killed by gang violence while playing in front of their home. Think of the families living in the housing project in Chicago without heat while Obama sat in his warm cozy home. Think of the student who could of had the chance at a better life but couldn't get into college because of the school system he had to attend while Obama sends his own children to a private school so they can get a better education. I will be casting my vote for McCain.

Doesnt matter if he is black or white, we simply cannot afford to have an ACORN operative inside the whitehouse, especially at the top.

As a nation, we are in the worst economic condition since the Great Depression. After eight years of a Republican administration, I believe the ONLY reason Obama would not be considered a shoe-in this time around is because he is bi-racial.

Here I am a white male. My wife and I are planning to vote for Obama. But I have to say if the black community tries to make this about "black vs. white" I might just consider changing back to McCain. Not because I am a racist but more because I will become fearful of the racist black community if you force me to believe that's what all this is about. If people vote for or against someone for the highest position in this country because of race instead of who is the best leader for this country those ???people??? aren???t ready for leadership anyway. I mean that for both white and black. Listen people RACISM SHOULD BE A NON-ISSUE. It's about America and ALL it's people. If Obama wins or loses don't devolve back to a time when it was about race. Let???s ALL rise to what???s best for all of us and not just what???s best for blacks or for that matter whites either. I don???t quite get how any black person could even entertain getting mad if Obama loses. He reached the highest place in this country and he happens to be black. That of itself PROVES we are not about racism as much as about our great America. So if he happens to lose it will probably be about something other than race. Maybe even the fear that the radical blacks are spouting, similar to the preacher even Obama distanced himself from for that very reason, may end up being the reason he might lose. Don???t give the few racist whites any reason to fear a person that may be the best leader for our country by starting the ???we will riot??? nonsense. Obama appears to be the best choice. He does need more experience but I still believe he is the better choice but not if he starts catering to the whims of a particular group of people.

did you not read the article? it is about race, not the issues.

  • Posted By: adc0720 @ 09/28/2008 12:53:35 PM

I'm not voting for Barak Obama. But it has nothing to do with whether he is black or not. In fact, I think he is very intelligent and quite the stateman and I love his wife. I just don't agree with his policies of more, big government. I'm sure I will be accused as being a racists by some and this saddens me. Sometimes I think it is the black community that keeps themselves down because they keep making it a race issue. I've really gotten to the point that I don't notice someone's race. I make judgements based on their character and personality. It's the black race that keeps bringing it up.

Engage yourself in the process and vote for the people you align your beliefs and philosophies with, regardless of the color. Let color not be your only benchmark or you will disservice your country and your race. It is indeed historic to have Obama as a choice for our highest office. However, threatening to protest and do violence because your candidate does not win and believing /pre-supposing he/she lost because the election was rigged/shady will not advance any cause but further galvanize others. Vote for the candidate of your choice based on sound reasoning and also be active in recognizing what your congressmen/women are doing.

How can we base our selection of president on the basis of a candidate's race? "I'm going to vote for Obama because he's black", resonates throughout the African American culture of the south. Undoubtedly, if he loses, it will be blamed on "the whites"... a racist comment in itself. I myself do not like either of the candidates, but one must be chosen. Driving me is the memory of that Act that Clinton signed in 1999, forcing Fannie Mae and Bernie Mac to lower credit standards for the poor, so everyone can afford a home. This brings us to the credit crisis of today.... I am an independant, but it is clear that the democratic party is responsible for our nations economic position today. Bush is a total idiot, but it wasn't him that messed up this nation... this is reflected on the fact that our current congress (democratic majority) has a less favorable rating than Bush himself. Democrats mean well, Clinton had a good idea to help the poor... but time and time again, these acts backfire on the majority of workers. Using race as the primary reason to vote causes a bigger rift in the progress our nation has made toward equality.

To all you who are proclaiming your whiteness and are voting for Obama...give it a break. It's pointless. The article is about the effect on the black community if Obama loses. Regardless of who wins, the other side will feel it's the end of the world.
