how condescending and racist to think obama is the first president to "actually care about african americans".
lyndon johnson did a hell of a lot for black people, dont try to tell me jimmy carter didnt care. history will show that bill clinton was the first black president. racism will always exist in some form, just like homophobia will. if borack loses it will be because he can not connect with people. i voted for hillary clinton and i would have voted for ccain if he had chosen someone like rudi gulliana as a running mate. i am now forced to vote for borack (or write in hillar clinton) because the thought of sarah palin in the white house sickens me

This infuriates me...there are black republicans. I am sure that not all black people are going to vote for Obama. Just as not all white people are going to vote for McCain...that is as ignorant and insulting as putting a woman on the ticket, who is not equipped to be there, just to get the woman vote. For those of us who are really concerned about the issues are putting up a fight to get the right person in office, not to demean this country by fighting for a white man above all. I thought that we have grown up and have put race in our past. It appears to me that the general black community are the ones making race the issue, not the white population. If, God forbid, Obama loses, I would hope that we as a united people take away from this a positive lesson...that is, American's are intelligent and adaptable people who can and will elect a black man and a woman in the future for president, that we are all created equal and that regardless of race or gender, we will elect the right person for the job.

Color has nothing to do with this man losing. He does not have the experience, he is not a leader, he is all words and nothing but! Just because he is black we should vote him in? Get real. He is not the man for the job, period.

    (47 year old white male).

While this is an interesting question, the more important question is "What will happen to ALL of us if Obama loses? Look around, folks. The country is in big, big trouble. We need change. I love my country. I don't want it destroyed by more of the same, failed policies. We need Barack Obama.

I think Barack Obama is a wonderful candidate and I think John McCain is very worthy and can serve as a good president. Our party processes brought out these two candidates and in an election, and lets be thankful for this, people vote freely. Because they vote freely they can choose anyone at anytime with early voting and anytime on election day, as long as it's just one time they vote, that they choose.

We all live with the results of elections and we're glad we have a democracy where we vote. Some president's elected haven't been my favorite, others have been president's I voted for. Whatever the outcome, we come together as Americans. If you notice, nothing I said brings up anything racial. This is an election, not anything else. I grew up with friends of all races and though I haven't married yet, I have dated interracially. I don't understand race being an issue. There are people of every nationality who reflect poorly for that nationality, but none of them define that nationality. THere are people who reflect well for every nationality, but they also don't define that nationality. That's because nationalities don't have definition, they are collections of fallible human beings who have a variety of backgrounds, termperments, perspectives and interact in many different ways.

So whoever wins, we don't have anything but a result. The result doesn't represent anything but democracy. If you want to involve yourself more than at voting time to be a light in the democratic process, please do. Will it be the biggest challenge of your life to do so regardless of nationality, yes it will and it will require sacrifice, time given for free.

The result = democracy, that's all, not a statement about anything. The tenor of this article really bothers me because I believe it allows racism to linger and spread. I've lived in the generation in which at least for me, its just colorblindness. I really have no idea why people focus on it except it's their last resort to explain something they can't explain in a rational way. I don't believe Americans want or need crutches.

I am a white man that is a registered republican. I would like to vote for John McCain as I fee that he is the more qualified candidate and more equipped to lead this country. However, this November I will be voting for Barak Obama because i am afraid that black people will think I am prejudiced or racist if I don't. I am very scared of retaliation by the black community and am worried about the protests by that may take place, should Obama not win.

The point in having the right to vote is to vote for the better qualified candidate. Your choice, as it seems, is McCain. So be it! Vote for McCain! If you're just going to vote based on the fear of African American retaliation, then don't bother voting! Your right to vote should be revoked based on that kind of attitude!

    • Posted By: Patti Kay @ 09/28/2008 12:18:28 PM

If you are voting out of fear of retaliation then you are voting for the wrong reason. What if YOU vote for Obama to prevent rioting, or to avoid being called a racist, and he STILL loses, and there are still riots? Your vote of conscience would have been lost because of the fear of being intimidated. Your vote is private, only you know which way you voted and what is in your heart. Anyone can call you a racist, but you aren't going to prove you aren't one by voting based on color.

I think that "black anger", is a definite issue. (I am a Caucasian American) I am curious to see if the black community can take a bump on the nose without spiraling into self ???destruction. Leading up to the election I questioned myself about how comfortable I would be with a black president. The thought of having anyone in the White House that resented everything about the country it represented is a concern of mine. The fact that many in the black community (including Obama) memorialize the LA riots seems disturbing and disgusting to me. Beating people???s brains out with bricks and burning down your own neighborhoods looks ludicrous to the Caucasian American community, even if it is a reaction to a horrible injustice. I think the black community would lose decades of credibility if they had anything other than peaceful protests. Considering the increase of the Latin American demographic, Obama could be the first and last African-American presidential candidate. If there are any violent protests he most assuredly will be. If the Caucasian American community hears the two ???R???s???, riot and/or reparations, it will not only doom the Obama campaign, but also any legitimate candidate in the future. Fair or unfair this is the truth.
I plan on voting for Obama because in spite of my concerns, I think he will be the best American for the job.

Listen to you people -- voting for Obama and McCain: Do you really think people should be able to make decisions about other people's lives? Would you go into someone's house with a gun and force them to live the way YOU want them to? NO! Then why do you do it with your vote, using the police power of the government to do the same? This is supposed to be a Constiutional Republic (freedom), not a democracy (mob rule). Learn the founding ideals of this country and vote Libertarian!

The race to be president is a two man race, one will win and one will lose, that is how the process has always worked, so to read D.L. Hughley commets "life isn't always fair and certainly isn't always fair for African-Americans. " I feel is very racist, I am tried of the black community calling White people racist when it truely feels that blacks are more racist to whites and feel very free to speak thier minds about it, where whites are feared to speak publicly about it, for fear of being labled racist. I just want to point out that the white man that is not the root of all that goes wrong for the black race. stand up and take ownership for you bad choices. You own your future and you have to change it and just becasue something does not work for you don't mean the white man did it, and now you can just have a baby fit and blame the whites. brush your butt off and try again... just like all the other races do.....

I'm tired of people taking the views of one individual and attributing it to a whole group.

If whites said we were mad because McCain lost to a black man we would be racist. In fact, because you thought of that you are a racist pig.

I'm white. Who worries aboutmy dissapointment if McCain looses? This only proves that the only reason the majority of blacks will vote for him is because he's black. This is just as racist as the racism against blacks.

Has everyone forgotten that this man Obama is half-white? In other words, he represents us all!

    wwbjr -
I have mixed feelings re: your post. When you say "hello Americans just like me". Do you mean Americans who work towards and vote for a strong, diverse and well machined country, color and gender blind, with no need of Affirmative Action, because the countries mindset has become one where equal rights are automatic and checks and balances i.e. Jackson & Sharpton are not needed? Or, do you mean (and are you one) Americans that work towards and vote for a history lesson unlearned and to be repeated?
Yes, we (Americans) need to move on. We (Americans) need the opportunity to focus on the issues that has all but stripped the American Dream, sent our loved ones off to die, and has disrespected the 'bill-payers' of the United states, the Working Class.
I'm glad that you realize that a 'change' is needed, and hopefully the time is now.
I'M STARTING WITH THE MAN IN THE MIRROR. I'M ASKING HIM TO CHANGE HIS WAYS. NO MESSAGE COULD HAVE BEEN ANY CLEARER....IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE TAKE A LOOK AT YOURSELF AND MAKE THAT CHANGE !
OR, as Bruce Hornsby would put it: Don't YOU believe that SOME THINGS WILL NEVER CHANGE.

For anyone to assume that Barack Obama might lose this election solely because he is an African American is ridiculous. There are plenty of other reasons that people might chose to vote for Senator McCain. For example, if you are pro-life instead of pro-abortion, if you don't believe that those who have worked their butts off for years should pay for others to sit on theirs, if you have paid into social security for years and have been promised that as a retirement and you feel you shouldn't be penalized for not spending every cent you made, if you're already paying over 1/2 of your income in taxes and don't feel it's unpatriotic to think that's enough.... I frankly don't care a hoot about race. What I DO care about is the above and that makes it perfectly acceptable for me to chose to vote for a different candidate.

Oh man, here we go. Dredging up the the black issue. Fact is, Obama is an AMERICAN, who just so happens to be a person of color. And that is the way, I believe, he would like to be viewed. Of course, we all know his father was Kenyan. But, racially speaking, that doesn't automatically make Obama a "brother". Don't place that wieght on his shoulder's. You can't and shouldn't pigeonhole him into the role of Great Black Hope. It's not realistic. Since his real job is to represent Americans without bias towards any single group, you'll likely set yourself up for disappointment. It wouldn't be fair to him to think otherwise. In addition, and most importantly, the more attention given to his "blackness", the more this race will be made about race. And THAT my friends could very well cost him the Presidency. So do yourself a favor. Vote with your minds, not your eyes. Listen to what he says, not the way he looks.

    This American is voting Obama.

  • Posted By: tcnw @ 09/28/2008 12:19:28 PM

does this mean if Obama wins, all the blacks will rise from the ashes and can now control the whites and all the benefits will go to the blacks and not whites. If he loses, it is racism because he is black. This thinking is so silly and stupid. Maybe both John and Obama should wear a mask in their debates so we can take the racism topic out. It is not fair to both candidates.

I'm white, I'm an American, I live in Kenya and let me tell you, the world is excited about the possibility of Mr Obama as the next president. My great fear, is that America's love of the Mediocre will push Palin et al. to the White House. It has become part of US culture and identity to feel threatened by anything above average. Obama is just that. He is not average. I"m ready for excellence. I demand it. And I vote too.

  • Posted By: tcar1964 @ 09/28/2008 12:27:17 PM

The black community needs to remember that Obama is half-white. I'm sure he's torn about certain issues. Don't assume he'll be the silver bullet to solve the "black man" problem. I'm sure he'll be more sensitve than Presidents of the past, but don't hold your breath too long.

  • Posted By: flyboy60 @ 09/28/2008 12:27:05 PM

So is that it? Make sure that Obama wins or the African-American community will be angry? Well, how would the African-American community feel if the McCain supporters took that attitude? Grow up.
