I think this article was used to bash blacks on a subliminal level because the only peopele who the writer used in the article was ex cons, or people who were baggy pants with conrows or using names like Daetwon...this article wasnt used to show people what the black community is worried about as far as him losing, it was made to show to scare all of the other races that criminals and "ghetto people" or gang members now have a chance on choosing who is going to run our country..to a degree niyamesi was rite...this article was used to divide our country, scaring the whites into what can happen if obama wins because of the people who are electing him...or making blacks feel more paranoid if he dowsnt win

Why does everyone refer to Obama as the black candidate (or even as a black man). Does no one notice or remember that he is half white? His mother was an educated and very bright white woman (a PHD in anthropology) While his father was African, he was not an African- American, so didn't have the same uniquely American experiences of a black man in America. Obama was raised by his white grandparents, in the midwest, so to me, how could he have even the remotest idea or concern for blacks, or their culture? If you want to vote for Obama, please do. It is our right and our duty to vote, and elect the candidate we feel will best represent and govern our great nation. Just don't do it because he is black or white, or mixed or whatever.

"There is white racism in America and it's a story Newsweek needs to do more on. What is it about whites that make them think that blacks should be able to vote for white candidates, but whites should have an argument for resisting black candidates." Then why are there so many white people at the Obama speaches and the Democratic Convention, but almost NO blacks at McCain's speaches or the Republican Convention? The racism mostly on the black side. Just because he's black all blacks have to vote for him? If I said all whites have to vote for McCain because he's white, would that make any more sense? Racism is racism, no matter what color is expected to perform a certain way based on a color factor.

What is sad is that this is a black and white issue. It seems odd tome that the African American community seems to ignore the fact that Obama is half white so it is just as easy to say that he is European American. Fortunately in this day and age I would suggest that being bi-racial isn't as problematic as it was in the past. One thing that I like about Obama is that I do not see him running on race or what his plans are for one group of people. Of course he does not have to run on race, just that fact that he is in the position he is in gives HOPE, I would say, to minorities as a whole. What I am disappointed about is his pick for VP. Biden is a joke and I???m not quite sure how he keeps getting elected except that people remember his name when it appears on a ballot. If Obama was for a new Washington, he surely wouldn't have picked him as he surely is not a representative of a new Washington.
Now I believe Obama has the potential to do a lot of good for this country, but then again so does John McCain. McCain is not an average toe the line Republican and is certainly not afraid of following a direction opposite of the same party. Should the African American community protest if Obama is not elected? That is ridiculous. What value is there in a protest if you don???t win? If a candidate does not win it is basically their own fault. To win you need to do one thing, and that is convincing the majority of people that you are qualified and should be President. Obama is young. Whether he wins or not, there will be another election in four years and he has the charisma to give it another shot then if he does not win this November. If he wins and does well, I would surmise that he will be in office for eight years. If he wins and does poorly, he may be able to pull win a second election, Bush did, but then again he has had a difficult Presidency and has been faced with difficult decisions. It will not be enough for Obama to appeal just to African Americans he has to appeal to a vast majority of people as there simply are not enough African Americans to put him in office. This country is vastly divided about who should be president, just look at the polls. Where do we go in the future as a country and who do we pick as a leader? I hope it is not based upon race but upon ability. I would hope that if he wins it is upon his merits not upon the color of his skin, but then again I am glad that he has provided hope. The fact the Obama is where he is today is because the attitudes and perceptions about the perceptions of race in America are changing but there is still need for improvement.

All you have to do is watch how McCain has been over the last several weeks. He's not going to do this, he is going to this, he's not going to do that, he is going to do that, he's not going here, he is going here. He comes across as very indecisive, very angry, very rude, and he's starting to appear senile. He can't remember names, he didn't even remember that Spain is in Europe and not in South America....And Palin is not qualified at all !

as I can remember anyone who served as a state offical can run for vice-president. people learn everyday. if she was not qualified then she would not be up as a running mate.

As long as you are a United States Citizen, over the age of 18, have never been convicted of a felony (or if you have, you have had your voting rights restored) and you meet the residency requirements of the state you live in to be considered a resident of that state, you can vote. Period. Show up naked and you can vote. You may get arrested for indecent exposure and taken to jail, but dress, cornrolls, eyeglasses, shoes or barefeet are not things that can keep you from being eligible to vote.

So vote. And if you get to do it twice, think nothing of it.

If his color comes in to play at any point in the decision to vote against Barack Obama, then the people of the US are only lying by saying that they want change. The most important change we can make is to break down the color barrier that is keeping our people separated. In the article, Houston nurse assistant Linda Wright turns the election into a fight to protect the office from a black president. Linda is one of the many people in the world who is standing in the way of progress.

  • Posted By: ClariceImani @ 09/28/2008 12:09:36 PM

Here is the reality. Whether Obama wins or not, the black community must still stand and do their best to get better. We(the black community) must all as individuals do our part to make our lives and this country a better place. Yes, if he wins, it will be great, historic, and all of those things. But Obama being president does not let us off the hook as far as doing our part to be productive positive forces in our communities and families. If and when he wins, it does not mean that we get a free pass on anything. Mr Obama is not running for president of the "Black United States"...He is going to be president of the United States. And I for one am voting for him not because he is black, but because he is qualified.
And why do you (the writer) assume that it???s only the Black community that will be in trouble or upset, ???if??? Barack loses. The whole country will be in bad shape, because this country needs a change for the better, not the same nonsense that has been going on for the last 8 years, and that will continue if McCain is elected, as evident by how he???s running is campaign.

What bothers me most is the attention the media ... people in the media, people in politics, people on the streets ... that suggest that they will vote for Obama because he is a man of color. If we have truly progessed as a nation, the color of his skin would be no bigger deal than the color of his eyes or the fact that he has curlier hair! And to be honest ... someone who chooses a president of the United States BECAUSE of his curly hair, should not be permitted to vote! Please ... can we give press to issues and not color! Don't feed the insanity ... work to change it.

Hussein Obama, turn in your passport and move back to Africa with the other Coons. Your Afro-Marxist policies and Black Liberation Theology only has support in the ghetto. We want Whitey!!

NO ONE should ever vote for a President based solely on the color of their skin. So far the only thing Obama is going to "CHANGE" is just that, The skin color of our President. Would you turn over the keys to your car to a 4 year old? NO. But thats what you'll be doing if you put Obama in to the White House. So all of you Obama supporters, please look past the fact that he's black, and that the Liberal run media has given him "Rockstar" like status. And try actually listening to what he say's.............NOTHING

  • Posted By: zaphod2000 @ 09/28/2008 12:08:52 PM

Instead of perpetuating violence by African Americans use your time to get people to get out to vote. There is finally a man, a black man, who can turn the country around and the talk of riots and violence doesn't change the opinion that many have of blacks when things don't go their way.
I am white and a LOT of my white friends and co workers truly believe that Senator Obama should be our next president. Don't let stereotype actions harm whatever the Senator has brought to the table.
Violence is not the answer . . . . GET OUT THERE AND VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Posted By: sourdough @ 09/28/2008 12:08:39 PM

Most all ex-cons have lost their right to vote since most ex-cons are felons. People don't go to prison for misdemeanors.

The better question is ........... how will the world react?

Understand that the world at-large is hopefully anticipating America finally living up to practicing what America has long preached as in that the content of a person's character is more important than the color of a person's skin. The world understands that based on where America and the world finds itself today, there is no logical reason not to elect Senator Obama simply because he exemplifies America's best move forward future perfecting our union and taking a leadership role rather than taking a step backward into the past re-embracing a condescending attitude toward everyone else. The world collectively faces major challenges and requires a forward looking America in order to rise up and successfully meet them.

In specific reference to the black community, the fact that we are engaging in a discussion of politics rather than on "pimps in the bedroom" speaks volumes to the positive impact that the possible election of Senator Obama has had and will have on it.

Whether he wins or loses, the black community must take advantage of this significant positive change in the conversation. We must move past willingly condescending ourselves to a future of taking personal and community responsibility for making our communities better.

  • Posted By: Jillian7 @ 09/28/2008 11:46:24 AM

The black community says that it's not them who have the race issue, it's us white folks huh? Well, then where were they at all the other elections? I'm sorry but the only clear reason you all want him to win is because he's black. If your race would encourage each other more instead of bring up the whole"poor black man or black girl" issue or omg if you could just decide that you want to be called AMERICANS instead of African Americans. I mean really I'm not called anything but American and that's just fine by me. Your race is all about skin color. You strut around looking at ppl like if everyone is looking at your skin. I'm looking at you and saying why don't you just be you? Of course that's where you'll tell me that you are and you're not one of the ones that walk around with a chip on your shoulder. I don't believe that. I live in an area where the black ppl are starting to out weigh the white and the mix kids are starting to appear in the hospital nursey more often then not. This is not what bothers me, I believe you can be who you want to be with. My issue is that you raise your children with that grudge and then they raise your grandchildren with that same grudge and your ppl will never drop the race card. So no, I don't think your race is even ready for a black president, although maybe if you see that Obama has made it this far then maybe one of your great grandchildren can make a difference in the future. As for now, McCain will when. He'll win because us Americans that always show up to the polls on primary and election day will vote and he'll be our decision for 2008. Sorry maybe next time.

Jillian7- you don't know what you are talking about?
Black WOMEN have always voted and during the Clinton years, blacks voted for these WHITE people in droves! The Clinton years marked an upswing in black voters. Now whites- including Hillary Clinton and her white female supporters- want to claim reverse discrimination! Simple minded people stabbing at a complicated issue.

I'm a white woman who is 60 years old, my comment is this, why haven't the black people been out there voting before? Remember black men fought in the wars and died so you could have the right to vote, so why haven't you done so up to this point?? My other comment is I'am voting for Obama, Race has nothing to do with it, I think he is intelligent and I think both Obama and his wife is the change this country needs, I too worry about him being assasinated there are so many crazy people out there, it is unbelivable, I pray this does not happen, and I also pray that this man is given the chance to turn this country around, I like his wife very much, she is outspoken and I like that, but she also has a lot of plain old common sense, something this country sorely needs.. GET OUT AND VOTE EVERYONE!!

Oh REALLY, Mrs. Barak HUSSEIN Obama!!!! What a miserable piece of sh-t is this woman? And this is what may beome first lady of our white house?! Oh, by the way, does everyone know that her educational thesis has been SEALED (her university has REFUSED to release it) until after the election is decided. Oh Okay, so you're actually trying to be inspiring Blackwell? Trying to engage people in the political process? Your actually just running them out of the room, or making them think this is some forum for bored preteens to annoy everyone in. People aren't going to run out and crack open a book because you're being sarcastic, try being informative instead of trying to be a Spaz and all over the dang place. It's reaaaaally nauseating, really. No. For real.

I have to laugh because its completely obvious I've pushed all your buttons. The only reason you're hanging around this thread is on the chance you might hurt my feelings. I'm honored. :D

By the way. I always find it interesting that when people disagree, the party with the weaker argument resorts to disparagement and condescension. I'm sure you would feel better if indeed I were a "***" or a closed mind, but nothing could be further from the truth. You label me such and then proceed to live out this story as if saying it makes it so.

Here's a curveball for ya : I hate John McCain as much as I hate Obama.

No, it's that your just like my crazy frustrating ass brother, he loves playing that Devils Advocate Bull. It drives me nuts, although he sounds a bit more facts based and less spastic than what your performance has been tonight, I've been playing that game with him for years. It really is off putting with you though because you're all over the table and just seem young and hopped up on caffeine instead of thought provoking and informative. You should work on that, really. It'll be good for ya. My Bro says he hates both Obama and McCain as well? PS, I have shut ya up and got ya off people's case for 5 damn minutes. BAM, I win.

Well I'm 35, and no caffeine, so you're wrong. But I'll let you win, like your brother probably does. For the record, I don't need your advice. Again, you're trying to elevate yourself magically to some position you haven't earned and then roll with it. I reject you out of hand, I understand your personality type, and that's the end of it. We can go round and round until I get tired and go to bed, but you will not accomplish anything.

Every candidate has negatives. Sometimes, in my wildest dreams I hope that the disadvantages of being a black candidate have now subsided to the point that it has become just another negative - like John McCain's age.

If the actual poll results are pretty close to the final outcome I dont see a legitimate cause for complaint - though I can understand well enough why there probably would be. What bothers me more is if for example the polls show Barack ahead by 4 point, but he actually loses by 5.

It is sad but true that Obama will not win because he is Black. His race will motivate some to vote for him but more to vote against him. Hopefully the choice between a Black President pledged to serve the greater good can out weigh the storied, grandpa-ishly familiar white candidate pledged to to the bidding of the few.

As for fear that those who Snoop mentions voting for his, I have this to say: 1. If ex means ex, then there's nothing to fear. Even if it doesn't, on some level could it be that they might want to see America as something they can be apart of and perhaps then abandon thier negative ways? A large part of what fuels or rationalizes the 'underground' is the hypocracy of the larger 'legitimate' society, which, some believe would begin to be addressed by this super qualified, legitimate Black candidate's success in becoming the leader of the nation. Change we can believe in.

At one point , early on, I thought that McCain might really represent, based on his 2000 campaign, a legitmate chance at change for the better. Having analyzed his record: his vacilation on the King Birthday and the SC Confederate Flag contorversy, his cynical choice of SP as a running mate (God save us all were he to be elected and prematurely meet his demise) and the fact that he would simply move in atop the current inept and corrupt Republican governmental apparatus; I just can't see how any rational person could think that he would represent change at all let alone change for the better. The debate most strikingly revealed MCain as a creature of the past, mired in old ideas and even older perceptions fo how the world works. Not that the past is not valuable, it is, but repeating the mistakes of the past is something we can't afford. To me that's what MCain represents.

I think that given all this, not just blacks, but everyone with half a brain (and no corrupt self interest in the outcome) would be dismayed should somehow the vote tally would once again fail to yield the most sensible result for America. I refuse to accept the notion that America will let that happen.
