"You think white people were just going to turn over the keys to the most important job in the land without a fight?" As if, for the majority of white Republicans in my generation, this has ever been about race. I would gladly vote for any human being that supported the values, beliefs, and principles that I feel would lead our country toward a stronger, more secure future. Of course, I am not so foolish as to beleive that there are many in American society that will cast their votes against Barak Obama for no other reason than the color of his skin, and that is a shame...but no more shameful than casting your vote for him for the same reason. Racism is a two-sided coin.

Many great thoughtful posts here. I am a 59 year old white woman, who will be voting for Obama in November. And not because he's black/white, but because he is the only one who can do it! McCain's day in the sun is over, he needs to ride his white horse into the sunset and take his excuse for a sidekick with him, they are a joke!

I am writing this message to inform people of the injustice being perpretrated by Fox News against Barack Obama. For the past two weeks there has been nothing but negative reporting against senator Obama by the Fox News network, which is unfair to listeners and the candidate. My concern is that negative reporting like this will influence voters that are undecided of which candidate best express their wishes. I depend on these news stations for fair, accurate and just reporting regardless of the outcome whether it be a debate or any other current event and if that cant be accomplished I feel that it is grounds for that station (Fox News network) to be boycotted until they learn and understand that those types of injustices will not be tolerated. If anyone else can relate to the unfair reporting of Fox News I suggest that you join me in a boycott of this news station. PASS THIS MESSAGE ALONG.

I don't trust anyone in the media, period. This article is a shining example of how the media distorts information to incite tension in the masses... in order to get more coverage. We keep falling for their self-promoting garbage.

I am white, and from the red state of Indiana. I feel so strongly that if McCain wins, we are moving with family in Greece. I think McCain is dangerous.

If someone actually throws out the Black- White issue and looks at each candidates voting record...There is only one realistic choice..McCain!!! Get ready with the Protests!!! Why not possibly a Riot??Perhaps call Al Sharpton!

"Truthspeaker2212" SAYS IT LIKE IT IS! I HEARD ON BLACK RADIO SHOW THE OTHER DAY THIS COMMENT "IF "YOU" (BLACK VOTERS) DIDN'T VOTE YOU MIGHT AS WELL TURN IN YOUR BLACK CARD BECAUSE NEXT TIME YOU USE IT "IT" (THE BLACK CARD) WON'T WORK!!!"

Of the 15 bills Senator Obama sponsored or co-sponsored in 2005-7 that became law:

    Two addressed foreign policy:
Promote relief, security and democracy in the Congo (2125)
Develop democratic institutions in areas under Palestinian control (2370).

    Three addressed public health:
    Improve mine safety (2803)
    Increased breast cancer funding (597)
Reduce preterm delivery and complications, reduce infant mortality (707).

Two addressed openness and accountability in government:
Strengthening the Freedom of Information Act (2488)
Full disclosure of all entities receiving federal funds (2590)

    Two addressed national security
    Extend Terrorist Risk Insurance (467)
    Amend the Patriot Act (2167)

One addressed the needs of the Armed Forces
Wave passport fees to visit graves, attend memorials/funerals of veterans abroad (1184).

Obamas Senate record. I guess the people saying he has done nothing don't care about women getting breast cancer or reducing infant mortality (thats not having babies die pro-lifers), only care about "promoting democracy" in countries with large oil supplies, dont care about miners dying due to insufficient safeguards because of pure greed by the mine owners, don't care about open and transparent operation of our government , etc etc.

Now list the Mccain accomplishments in his 26 years in Washington? Besides being rebuked for his involvement in the Keating 5 which directly contributed to the S+L crisis which led to a massive taxpayer-financed bailout of Capitalist Greed Barons? Does any of that sound familiar?

He's voted with Bush 90% of the time and brags that he "did every thing I could to get him elected and re-elected". So if you like tax breaks for the rich people who are begging for a 700 billion dollar socialist handout to rescue them from the adverse effects of their own unrestrained greed, you might want to vote Mccain. If you think 8 year girls who have been gang-raped should be forced to bear those children you might want to vote for a Mccain- Palin ticket. If you think "10,000 BC" was a historically inaccurate movie not because it showed humans and dinosaurs interacting in the same time period but because everyone knows the earth wasnt created until at least 6000 BC according to Genesis then its a good bet you might want to vote for the Mccain - Palin ticket.

Kimberly2 & Kimtastic- Good News - Obama is ahead in 18 of 21 polls posted on the New York Times' website - its very interesting, Tied in 2 of them, and poor tired old McPain is only ahead in 1 - what a joy it must be to be in "Larry IS WRONG" S household - If he's having a bad day today - then just imagine his pain on Nov. 4th - I CANT WAIT TILL NOV 4TH - P.S. I belive I'll go hug a tree, put on some lipstick and go small game hunting

YOu obviously son't know that his margin doesn't mean much

      • Posted By: Kimberly2 @ 09/28/2008 11:54:18 AM

Just goes to show you don't know what the Electoral College is or does, just because I said if Obama loses blame the Electoral College you assumed I'm a tree hugger and a Obama fan. I don't like either Obama or McCain I think both will be bad for this country to bad we don't have someone else in the mainstream running for president.

      • Posted By: RyanO1976 @ 09/28/2008 11:31:52 AM

Yea, Gallup is getting ready to release a poll today that shows Obama up by 8, so you obviously don't know that margin DOES mean something.

I encourage everyone to goto these two you tubes and see the truth.

If you are voting for Obama because he is black or McCain because he is white don't go.

If you are interested in truth and the facts and are interested in learning about this Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac crap that congress and the senate has put us through (both sides) then watch these videos.

Everyone needs to watch CSPAN more! And Thank God for You Tube!

Thank you Newsweek for allowing people a page to express our opinions, views and to tell the truth!

It's high time people stop looking at race and start looking at what really matters....the condition of this country, the taxes, the way the "other" politicians have ran this country into the ground, and who has the ability to bring about change. I'm white, I'm female, I'm in my 50's and I can say this, if McCain is in the white house, a lot more will go horribly wrong and we will see world war 3...mark my words. I'm not wrong on this.

    • Posted By: Wart @ 09/28/2008 10:37:44 AM

Give me a break, anyone that truly has experienced the horrors war would be the person that would be less inclined to enter another war unless there was absolutely no way to avoid it.

      • Posted By: LilBella @ 09/28/2008 11:53:54 AM

You do realize that even the Veterans of Foreign Wars (and, yes that includes Iraq) do NOT want McCain in the White House, right? By 80%!!!!

      What is your point, madam?

  • Posted By: proud to be a treehugger @ 09/28/2008 11:29:38 AM

It's time to get past skin color. Mr. Obama is intelligent, articulate and the first breath of sanity since the first Bush presidency. I'd like to have some PROOF or EVIDENCE of the charges made by "Nobama"--what a hater!

I'm a middle aged white woman of the dying middle class whose first interest in Mr. Obama was generated by my college aged white son, who heard Mr. Obama speak and was handed some hope for his future--not more federal debt that his generation will be saddled with if the current (McSame) policies continue.

So this isn't about sex or color or religion (this is Amerida, remember?)...it's about what's best for the country and you cannot convince me that the Repubilcans have done the working person in this country ANY favors in the past 8 years.

    • Posted By: NOBAMA 2008 @ 09/28/2008 11:53:47 AM

I am not a hater just stating the facts- Educate yourself on the reality of this man. He can not even admit his true origin as he very eloquently tells you what you want to hear yet clearly does NOT have the EXPERIENCE needed to run this country. He is guilty by association to the white haters in his church- HE IS THE RACIST ONE, along with his RACIST wife!!

  • Posted By: marnata @ 09/28/2008 11:53:26 AM

Obviously the two of you have never felt what it is like to walk into a store, down the street or make travel decision for your family based on "are the people in that town accepting of people of color?". We make those decisions everyday and have to deal with the negative comments, smirks and evil eyes of some white people.
For once...here is a man with better qualifications than the current president...smart, charismatic, a mover and an shaker for all people...yes I said all...and he happens to be black. Why not give my kids the opportunity to be proud of who they are based solely on the color of their skin b/c the president is black? That's how white people live everyday and go where they want to when they want to go.

  • Posted By: tampabaycraig @ 09/28/2008 11:53:02 AM

So what if he loses, he will be no different than the other 44 MEN who ran for the presidency and lost! Why is it there must be this big conspiracy that if he loses it must be due to racism? That in itself seems like a racist thought or idea to me.

  • Posted By: hbtripp @ 09/28/2008 11:37:06 AM

I am a 58 year old, white as rice, Vietnam veteran. I am greatly concerned that Obama will not get elected. That's right, I said I am fearful of Obama NOT getting elected. I am mildly offended but also aware of why the black people of this country still think that the average white person does not want a black man as president. Barack is the far superior PERSON for the job. I might vote for Condaleeza is she ever ran for President.

    • Posted By: Barbara in Texas @ 09/28/2008 11:53:00 AM

I, too, am white. I am a 67 year old white great-grandmother and although I am in remarkably good health, I am old and tired. I know that McCain is old and tired too although he tries hard to hide it. Obama is half white and half black so why is this racist thing coming forth? He is the best man for the job! What else can you throw at him? McCain knows war. Period. He lives in the past as many of us old folks do. Let Obama win and do the job that he will do well.

In reading a majority of the comments posted, this article accomplished its goal. The goal to keep a division. Let be reasonable, we Americans get upset if our favorite team loses. It's human nature to be upset if the chips doesn't fall the way you would like. Competition is just that someone wins and someone will not. Remeber there was an outcry when Gore loss. It's no different.
Now to address the issue of who is the best candidate, let's use the system that is set in place and allow it to determine the outcome meaning cast your vote based on the issues and not focus on articles such as this to further divide a country. I have made my decision on who I will vote for and those reason vary on many levels.
Do I need to comment on who I'm voting for and why or do I need the candidates to convince me. Last time I checked when casting your vote there is you entering the voting booth and you leaving your vote. All the other people you are arguing with are not part of that equation, so why engage them. Yes, I trying to be a peacemaker here because this article did not spark constructive conversation instead it ignited an inferno that is not necessary. Some people will vote for one candidate and some will vote for another. We have bigger obstacles facing us to based a conversation on black, bi-racial, white, woman, man. Thes antics people are just smoke screens and if you have ever experience a fire before, majority of death are caused by the smoke and not the fire. My request to you is to avoid the smoke or it will kill us all. Thank you.

  • Posted By: Rianna58 @ 09/28/2008 11:20:12 AM

Do bear in mind, also, that Newsweek is just a cog in the Republican machine. They are biased towards McCain, and it is in their interests to put the words "Obama" and "lose" in the same sentence. They want to take away our hope and instill apathy in Obama voters, printing whatever they can in order to discourage us so we won't go to the polls in November. We can win, we WILL win, we have to win. The alternative doesn't bear thinking about...I am a fifty year old white woman, and I believe in Barack Obama. He is the future of our country. Don't let anyone make you feel different, if you support him! Get out there...talk to people...write editorials...and most of all, VOTE, VOTE, VOTE!! Articles like this are insulting and potentially divisive, but in all truth, are really nothing more than the usual "do anything, say anything" to win, dirty tactics that Republicans stoop to in every election. OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!!!

    • Posted By: Fpmjr @ 09/28/2008 11:52:50 AM

I think you need to research the facts before you quote! Newsweek is owned by the Washington Post. One of if not the most liberal publication. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsweek and scroll down and read the "media bias article"

Seems strange that a person has to be a certain color now to win office. I am a Democrat. I am voting for the good of our Country. So, now if Obama loses the election then there will be protests and maybe violence? Sore losers? Is this article suppose to scare us into voting for color? Insinuate that whites are prejudice? At first I was going to vote for Obama. But he did to many things like Germany speech. Saying he is going to tax the wealthy. Which we the middle and poor will suffer for. Death taxes and how he will just talk to dangerous Countries. The first debate I feel he was to weak. Has nothing to do with color at all.

  • Posted By: annaw22 @ 09/28/2008 11:52:33 AM

This is such an uneducated ans biased story. People will deal with an Obama loss the same way they will deal with any other presedential loss. Is this supposed to mean that when Gore lost there were no angry people. There have been many closley contested elections in our nations history and this may be right up there with the closest and most heated. But do you not think that McCain supporters won't feel those same feelings it is not about race, it is about the leader of the free world! This article could have been written in a way that was informative telling how people felt so strongly for both cantidates, especially new voters. Is is irresponsible as a news organization to be so one sided and I will personally cancel my subscription to newsweek now. I have always been in the middle and have voted both rep. and dem. in the past but to be so irresponsible as a news organization is ridiculous.

we have real issues to deal with in this country and we need someone that can represent America and care about all the people as a whole and not just only for the Black or White communities. i don't care about if our president is white/black/man/woman. Racism go both ways. If whites prefer John because he is white it is racism and if blacks prefer Obama because he is black, it is racism too.
