To the readers who think this is just about Obama being black and thinking it's an outrage...you're not listening! It's about the MESSAGE that is giving a group of people hope where there used to be NONE. Geez, wake up. This article has helped me better understand the depth of apathy that has come from generations of despair and skepticism - now finally (whether Obama can actually deliver or not) there's a glimmer of hope. But here's my strong criticism - this election is NOT just about whites v. blacks. Obama would not get where he is without the devotion and hard work of a ton of white people. If he loses, they lose too.

It really gets to me when I hear blacks say they fear that the election will be stolen from them or that there will be demonstrations if they lose. When will they ever get over the belief that white people hate them? The vast majority don't! Every race that ever existed were once slaves, How long will it take for blacks to believe that they can succeed only if they work at it, like Obama did? Just because Obama may win the election does not mean that their lives will automatically change for the better. The whites have fears too, one being that black cronism will run rampant just like the blacks accuse the whites of doing. This election should be about who is best for america, not about race. As a white person who is probably going to vote for Obama, it will be because I think he is the best person for the job, and not because he is black. If an Obama lose triggers mass demonstrations or pillaging, then the blacks will have taken a huge step backwards.

I am glad to hear you will probably vote for Obama. I am glad to hear you list some of white folks fears. This article simply discussed some of ours. Fear is not always rational, hence the GOP has been able to manipulate so many electins using the tactic.

As a black person, I can tell you the fear that Obama will only support blacks is not a concern. He has stated in many of his speeches that all individuals, rightly so, have to take responsibility for the success.

Keep talking and try to ask blacks, without being confrontational, how they see things from their perspective and I hope you are open to the same. This way we can all learn and get things out in the opening.

The article is spot on. I voted for Obama in the primary thinking it would fun and I would vote for Hillary in the general election. I never once believed in the beginning that collectively America would put racism aside and support Obama. I was pleasantly surprised. However, racism still exists and it was not that long ago ie the 60s when atrocities such as the assination ocurred. I don't know when or how racism will end but I sincerely hope that with each day we are closer to judging people for their character instead of how they look.

Many blacks have been accused of voting for Obama simply because he is black. Black people have run for the POTUS before and I would not consider them folks such as Keyes, Jackson and Chisolm. Obama is qualified and better suited to lead us in the 21st century. Everytime you hear a black person accused of voting for Obama simply due to color ask them if they voting McCain simply because he is white.

I voted already and cried on my way to the polls because I heard a white man say he would not vote for Obama simply based on color. I know I can't change him so I did what I could do challenge racism and ignorance where it exists plus casted my ballot. It is important to me to vote because I know how hard women and blacks had to fight, simply for the right so many white men have had all along.

      Thank you for listening.

Great story! We (black voters) need to make sure we come out in historic numbers to make this happen. Quick response to the posted comments - It's easy for you guys to take what you believe to be the "high road" by not reacting when your candidate doesn't win because, frankly, you're white. You now nothing of being historically discriminated against. Racism is an American institution, period. If you are too naive to admit that because you've been trapped in your little world of white-privilege, then it is what it is. White people won't riot if McCain losses because many white people will directly benefit from a McCain victory. The fact that Obama is clearly the better candidate and the reace is still this close speaks to the racism that still exists in this country. Leave your neighborhood one of these days and get a dose of the REAL America!

Wow. People have got to understand that a Presidential Election is not a popularity contest. We can't give the job to someone based on skin color and/or gender. To do so would be the very same discrimination we've been fighting against for decades now. I hope that, when I apply for a job, my chances of getting that job are based on my experience and credentials...and not based on my skin color or gender. How much more important is it that we elect someone based on his credentials and experience when we elect (hire) someone for the position of Comander In Chief for the US??

Vote Obama for President, because you think, of those left standing, he is the best for America, Don't vote for him simply because he is Black and you are Black. Vote largely on the issues and your expectations for the future, not merely on emotions.

  • Posted By: photoartguy @ 09/28/2008 11:34:17 AM

For me, this election is not about the skin color of the candidates -- it's about CHANGING the failing system that the mostly-Republican administration has made worse in the last eight years. This country sucks as of late; and, going another four+ years with an administration that's "politics-as-usual" would just make it worse. Obama may not have all the answers (no one does), but at least it appears that he is willing to CHANGE things to try and get our country back on top. I don't care if he's freakin' purple or his wife is an alien -- he's American and espouses American values and, unless he is a big fat liar (like we already know Bush and McCain are), he is the best hope for a better America. Now, if he could bring Ross Perot on board, we might get things going.

I'm voting for Obama; I'm a white American; and, I approve this message.

If Obama loses it will only confirm what most Black americans secretly feel about whites. One must only look at whites reaction to OJ Simpson's acquittal as opposed to Robert Blake and Phil Spector's verdicts.

    If Obama wins...we all lose.
How do two Ivy League educated lawyers represent the "common man" or "middle class america"? Please!!

    • Posted By: frsinTexas @ 09/28/2008 11:34:03 AM

And you honestly feel that a comfortably off Senator, married to a millionairess, who can't keep count of the number of homes that he owns and whose wife wears a $300,000.00 outfit to his acceptance speech is going to be more concerned for the "common man"? Give me a break!! You have swallowed the whole story hook, line and sinker.

    • Posted By: frsinTexas @ 09/28/2008 11:07:02 AM

So, a white man married to a millionairess, who has more homes than he can count and a wife who wears $300,000 worth of clothing and jewelry to his acceptance speech is more qualified to side with the "average American". Boy, have some folks out there swallowed the line, hook, line and sinker!!

Yes, I am afraid our election is a poularity contest! The one that is most popular is the one we vote for and the one that wins! As a white american I am also afraid that race is what will it will all come down to...unfortunalty, my children see it as well at school. And as my 7 year old said with purity and honesty, "Mommy it is not right for people to make him loose because he has brown skin." We would just be ignorant not to realize it is still a battle in the country to eliminate racism...and that is terrible. But I, as many others, can't wait to change that when Obama takes office in January! We just love him...and he is popular here.

I think Black America need to wake up! This is not a common blck man running for the Presidency of the US. This is a second generation Arab. Let me make this clear, if Obama was truly a black individual without a muslim belief, I would have reserved my vote for him. This man, even though a Senator has a hidden agenda, which I sincerely pray, it does not affect of us . . . balck or white!

    • Posted By: Damisiv @ 09/28/2008 11:33:53 AM

Spoken like a true racist. Obama, clearly being the smarter candidate with the better plan, is being undercut by comments and beliefs just like this! He's repeatedly said that HE IS NOT MUSLIM! If your dad was in the KKK, does that make you an honorary member? Wake up! Just be honest and say you're worried because he's black... don't manufacture false issues.

Racism is a human trait that is ugly, destructive, illogical, stupid and immoral. The nurses attendant who stated "do you think white people are going to turn over the keys to the most important job...without at fight". made a racist statement. I am voting for Obama because I believe in what he says he stands for, not because he is a particular race. If this is a repeat of 2004 and 2008 than we all lose. Frankly, I wish the nurse attendent and everyone like her would open up there bigoted eyes. Stop the racist statements and start asking your family, friends, coworkers and people you meet during the day to vote for Obama and change!

    • Posted By: feefee @ 09/28/2008 11:33:47 AM

I totally agree with you, I too believe in what he stands for. If Hillary would have won the nomination I would have supported her too.

  • Posted By: Phdintraining @ 09/28/2008 11:33:46 AM

We are all victims of racism. I have to remind myself when white people angrily protest, they are not even aware of how racism has affected them. I am a white woman and this article almost made me cry. I feel that Barack Obama is more qualified than any president I can think of in my history and yet I too fear he will not win. I too will be devastated.

Black or White, the Liberal/Democratic voice has not been acknowledged in a LONG time...THAT is what will cause riots and disenchantment. The consevatives basically stole the vot in florida from Gore, and how Kerry lost is beyond me, but the conservatives had thier shot- and it was a good long one- and our country is a now a complete and historic mess. If the liberals don't get thier chance this time, there will be a HUGE segment of the population that wll basically like they're not members of the political process and the country.
How those people will react is what I fear...

  • Posted By: 1kureckert @ 09/28/2008 11:33:33 AM

Wow, I'm glad to see whites are color-blind enough to vote for Obama; but, if he loses (maybe - shockingly - because the majority of people do not like his policies or maybe even him personally, irrespective of race) blacks are going to blame white people's racism (and possibly riot). I would think the evidence then is one race has generally moved on from racism and the other one refuses to follow. I think riots work well in third world countries when you don't get what you want (for whatever reason). We should do that here. (These people can vote?!?) Just out of curiosity, what are black people going to say when he wins? Are they going to move on then and address the self-perpetuating issues in their community caused by their own design? Will everything stop being chalked up to "racism?" What if loses in 4 years (if he wins); were we not racist now but more racist then?If 98% of black people vote for Obama, but only 50-60% of white people vote for McCain, who outwardly looks more influenced by race (and thus would be racist, in the loose definition of the word)? Why is not ok for 98% of white people to vote for the white candidate out of solidarity? Is it because that type of voting is narrow-minded and counterproductive in a healthy democracy? Sorry, just had to get my thoughts out.

This article makes me SICK! I am a black conservative. I vote for issues not for the person. My father was a black conservative. It is not that nobody wants a black president, it is because he is not qualified. Now if it were Keys, Rice, or Powell, Americans would have no problem. Liberals are always keeping racism going or as my father would poverty pimping out the Blackman. Black America wake up and stop trying to hide your inadequacies behind race. You are making every hard working black person look bad.

    • Posted By: tippology1 @ 09/28/2008 11:33:32 AM

I agree with you, if Rice, Powell, Michael Steele, was running for office it would be 100% support from me because they have the experience to be a strong president, but Obama is a joke of a candidate who has been running for office for 2yrs and wrote 2 books explaining why. I can't stand this guy because he has no heart. and no soul.

  • Posted By: jones99 @ 09/28/2008 11:33:29 AM

I don't understand, Why is it racism if a white person respects Obama very much, but does not want to vote for him because of his stance on taxes, the war in Iraq and abortion; however, it is not considered racism if an African-American person votes for Obama just because he is African-American? In this article, not one of the issues was mentioned and the whole article was just based on the race issue. As Americans, we have come much farther than that and race should not even be an issue.

  • Posted By: athinkingperson @ 09/28/2008 11:33:04 AM

This article is only printed to put the seeds of riot in people's minds. Obama is not what he seems and that is not a black/white issue.

I am a white European married to an American Hispanic who like many poor kids in New York City did not have a lot of things going for them. But he paid attention in school and did his best without any guidance or complaints. He is now retired with a rich career and a Masters Degree behind him. I have never heard him say that we need a president in office who will support or take care of less fortunate people like him. He did it all on his own by making the right choices. America is truly the country where you can achieve anything you set your mind to. This is why I don???t understand the pack mentality of the majority blacks who vote solely based on color ??? what does color have anything to do with the presidential race or any other job for that matter? It has to do with whether you have the experience or not required to do that job. And what is a black president suppose to do for them that they cannot do for themselves?? By the way, my husband is republican and I am VERY proud of him because he is a good example of what America is all about i.e. it???s all up to the individuals to make something out of themselves and not the government.

When I watch Barack Obama in action, I forget color completely. I am a white American and I have lived in Thailand for 15 years. One's skin color means nothing to me. What means a lot to me is that Obama is a TCK (third culture kid)--he has lived in another country and has experienced living in another culture. I had always hoped that a Third Culture Kid would run for president of the U.S.A. and now I have my wish. He MUST win for the good of America and for the good of how we are perceived in the world.
