I'm sorry mr. american soldier....i agree 22 years as a naval officer is not the same as an community organiser. But i also think serving ur country in the armed services does NOT automatically make u qualified to run the country. It is egocentric to believ the ability to fly a war plane or fire a gun qualifies u to be President. Especially when there are a lot of patriotic, but not so bright people in there. Can u be honest for once?

    • Posted By: edjones65 @ 09/29/2008 7:27:32 PM

I wouldn't mind if you explained that statement myself, I sincerely hope that is not what it sounded like. I am an ex-Marine who is proud of the time I served my country as well.

    • Posted By: American-Soldier @ 09/29/2008 3:18:04 PM

Oh, one more thing, it was so nice of you to call the men and women who volunteer to protect this great nation of ours "not so bright". So our military, since it's inception (follow me for just a moment) has been populated with unintelligent people who didn't know any better than to put aside their own interests and put their lives on the line for their country--they were stupid (synonym for unintelligent, or 'not so bright'). Among those being George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, John Tyler, Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight T. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Pat Tillman, Colin Powell, Sally Ride and the Challenger astronauts, and the millions of others who've died in service of this country--idiots, right. I'm sure I'm the biggest of all. Go find a playground, sir, so you be around those of common maturity. You're lucky that no one has read your blog closely, because you BASICALLY said that the people serving in our nation's military are dumb (again, exact words were "not so bright"). Anyone else want to take a stab at this comment? Please let him have it, on behalf of every person to ever serve this country and their families.

    • Posted By: American-Soldier @ 09/29/2008 3:05:14 PM

Can you read, sir? I said that it made him qualified to be Commander-in-chief moreso than Senator Obama, and how dare you make an attempt to impune my integrity!!! "Can I be honest for once?" How dare you be that pretentious and ignorant about my specific comment. McCain is better qualified to lead our military because he actually served in it, and was an officer to boot. He knows what it's like to go to war, and to rely on the person to one's left or right with your life. Obama does not--that was my point, and that is what I said. Where is the lie in that? I suggest you check yourself, sir. I was being honest, and again, that was my only point. I didn't delve into any of the other issues or where either candidate stood regarding said issues. I was factual and to the point, moreover, it is my opinion, granted it may be shared by the majority of Americans. You are something else to attack me like, sir--enjoy your status as an American, and God bless, sir--I hope you feel better about your blog and yourself for having questioned my honesty and integrity--at least in my job I'm judged and held accountable for my integrity--especially since I'm a medic and a x-ray tech specializing in trauma--how many lives, civilian and military have you helped save? I am a soldier, and an American--there were no grounds for your comment--do not question my morals again--I know what waits for me when I go to meet my maker.

Let me start by saying, it is wonderful to see the black population of America energized for presidential politics and it, quite honestly, has been too long coming. I only have reservations to why they are voting for Senator Obama, because he is black or because he has values and ideas like their own?
The black population needs to do some reading of history, outside of the liberal media. It has been the black leaders who have created this black socialistic society, dependant on government to keep them in housing and make sure they have food on the table. It has been the Republications in past who created and fought for the Civil Rights movement, before the leaders like MLK. It was Republicans who were against slavery, Abraham Lincoln was a Republication.
Barak Obama has no idea of what is like to grow up in the inner cities of this great country, America. He is worst than any politician, he is going to ride the coat tails of the inner city blacks, all the way to the White House and then when there, and I really hope he is not, step all over the people who actually got him there. Higher taxes on companies, who does he think employees the population. If I was a small business owner and I had to make a decision to hire 1 or 2 people or keep 1 or 2 people on payroll or pay that same money to government, I would choose to hire or retain the people and not give the government the money.
God help this great land, elect John McCain.

I am offended by your comment reference Obama not doing anything for Blacks. He is not President, YET, and he have inspired so many young Black men, women, boys, and girls. So if he never become our President he has been an inspiration to a lot of us and the dream will come alive, just you watch and see. THERE ARE BLESSINGS FOR US AS A PEOPLE WE DESERVE IT.
YOU KNOW AMERICA OWES IT TO US.
OUR FAMILY MEMBERS HELP TO BUILD THIS COUNTRY TO WHERE IT IS TODAY, BE IT WILLINGLY OR BY FORCE.
RESPECT US, WE BLEED AND DIE JUST LIKE ANY OTHER RACE OF PEOPLE.
      OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT
P.S. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT OBAMA WILL DO????
ASK OBAMA MAMA'S IN CHICAGO ABOUT HOW OBAMA INSPIRED THEM...

WELL THIS IS ONE WHITE FAMILY WHO IS VOTING FOR MR. OBAMA
AND WE ARE NOT VOTING FOR HIS COLOR, WE ARE VOTING FOR HIS INTELEGENTS, HIS CANDOR WITH THE PEOPLE, ALL PEOPLE! AND THE WAY HE WORKED UP THE LADDER TO GET WHERE HE IS AT TODAY BY HONEST HARD WORK FOR THE PEOPLE!

Thank you. I am voting for him for the same reasons. Again, thank you....Well written.

  • Posted By: Morgan2008 @ 09/29/2008 6:32:36 PM

The country will be better off if Obama loses. We need a leader with foresight...not hindsight. Obama is better at hindsight and being a Monday morning quarterback. He can't make a decision until he stands on the sideline for awhile to watch how the issue is playing in the polls. After a decision has been made or it is clear what the decision will be, Obama jumps in and tries to take credit for backing or rejecting it. Barack Obama should have shown respect for this country by at least serving one full term as a U.S. senator before running for president. He is completely lacking in the necessary experience in foreign policy, economic matters, etc., etc. Barack Obama is all talk without a record to back it up. Senator Joe Biden said he wasn't ready to be president and the Clinton's know he isn't ready to be president. They are all proping him up for the sake of the democrat party. Senator Hillary Clinton is doing more to get him elected than he is doing for himself. I bet you he wouldn't do the same for her if the situation were reversed. Programs Obama has promised he will provide and his tax policies will hurt America further and drag us down more. I am a democrat who will vote for McCain/Palin in November. I pray to God Obama loses in November for the sake of America's future. Would've voted for Hillary Clinton but Obama is way too far left for my vote plus I think he puts his political career ahead of country. NOBAMA

My stomach turns when i think about how our presidential election has come down to color and not topic. we are one nation and i want to hear about the issues not about what color they are. I understand there is still racism today but i dont think we should be wasting our time arguing about the color of the next president or the age and start talking aqbout the issues only.

Those keys (as mentioned in the article ) were never theirs to turnover. All qualified Americans have a right to those keys, and even some who were far from qualified opened the doors of the White House with those keys.
I'm not afraid that Obama will lose this race because I know that at least three fourths of Americans don't wear dunce caps. Any intelligent American wants a better America than what we now have.

The only way obama and his ape like wife will ever step foot in the White House is if they are hired as servants. They call it the "White" House for a reason!!!!

Actually, it's called the White House because of the white pigmentation of the lime coating on the sandstone exterior. (It's my goal to educate conservatives, one small fact at a time...)

So many of these comments are so ill informed, embrace willful ignorance and just down right racist. To say that ALL blacks OR MOST blacks when most have probably not even had an in depth conversation with a black person but go by what they see on the news or TV, well it is so disgusting. I have never understood this racist crap in American and as a black usa citizen who has traveled the world my further mistrust of equality for all in Americans is sadly strengthens if these comments are any indication.. After all I can travel the world and be treated better by my world citizens than I will (per all these comments) my fellow Americans. There are angry white and black people in this country who continue to distrust each other, however, the continuation of stereo typing and lack of WANTING to understand a fellow citizen will only hinder the USA's growth as a nation. Maybe that is what you want, however, I would like to believe that someday, color will no longer be such a divisive issue. Unfortunately, since so many have misconceptions of each other, I don't see that happening soon. So disheartening that after so many years Americans are still quite good at hating each other!

    Part 4 of 4
Media and The Presidential Race 2008 In attempting to dissect U.S media reporting methodologies, which have been surreptitiously subjected to the overly simplistic assessment of leaning either "left" and "right" journalistically, I submit that there are significant indications of race and gender bias as a matter of course, and most profoundly discernible when potentially seismic change to the racial status quo emerges. The Obama Presidential bid, and reportage associated therewith, clearly falls into this category. In line with the above assertions, I recommend to Newsweek readership an excellent dissertation by Dr. Sonja Stokes-Gildon, produced to complete Wayne State University Doctoral program requirements: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Gildon_Dissertation.pdf What I've attempted to do here is change or modify commonly held assumptions and beliefs to be more reflective of the current and historical realities, without which there can be no real progress in resolving age-old racial/ethnic/cultural conflict among humans who are indeed, of one race...

  • Posted By: Seeker14 @ 09/29/2008 5:30:31 PM

    Part 3 of 4
By the 1920 census, the number was 9.9%, rose to 10.5% by 1960, and 11.1 by 1970. And there, in utter defiance of accepted census counting techniques and the most basic presumptions, even absolutes, as applied to humanity's overwhelming desire to perpetuate itself, it sat... Moreover, in what can be considered the ultimate insult to a segment of the population on whose backs this nation was inarguably built, a self fulfilling prophecy (based on appalling deviations from established, again, demographic data gathering process along with historically indisputable indications of willful undercount and count of non-Blacks here illegally) designed to neuter observable sociological advances in education, professional position avails, overall entry into the economic mainstream, and above all, respect and dignity, was "confirmed" by the 2000 Cenus: Hispanics were deemed as the new "largest minority". The foregoing thus begs the question: "What is the actual population representation of Black Americans?" Answer: According to industry colleagues within the marketing and advertising sector, along with observations by one of the country's 70 woman labor historians, that number is closer to 33% (the significant new European migration begun in earnest as a result of the Irish Potato Famine --1845-1850 -- and falling off with the outbreak of World War I in 1914 notwithstanding) which would more accurately assign status to Blacks as the second largest majority. We need not dwell on the profound implications of this assertion --if found to be true -- in a variety of areas; inclusive of the election process. 5. The assumption that purity of race exists within this country or anywhere else on the planet as would be necessary to lend credence to the notion of racial/ethnic superiority and justification for the great cultural divide between Black and White Americans. I leave it up to fellow Newsweek readers to test these assumptions using available historical demographic, psychographic and social analytics data.

  • Posted By: Seeker14 @ 09/29/2008 5:29:15 PM

    Part 2 of 4
The assumptions that we wish to challenge here range from relatively benign to significant: 1. The assumption that the AP Style Book is correct to recommend the use of a lower case "b" and "w" when using black and white to identify race. Logic dictates that used thusly, the words become pro-nouns and should therefore be capitalized. (I welcome discussion here) 2. The assumption that it is appropriate to continue the use of language designed to trivialize, marginalize and render this side of insignificant the experience and existence of American Blacks as expressed by the terms "minority", "Black leaders" and "Black community" 3. The assumption that Blacks are monolithic in their thinking --as this article overwhelmingly implies -- and will only consider "color of skin" as opposed to "content of character" when making decisions at this level of import and impact 4. The assumption that Blacks represent a mere 12.3% of the populace as concluded by the 2000 census, despite protests from within the United States Census Bureau itself relative to questionable population count methodologies deployed or not deployed, including the elimination of statistical sampling. This number (12.3%) is in abject denial of readily available census data going back to the first Jefferson directed count of 1790, which indicated a Black population representation of 19.3%, and flies in the face of accepted demographic data gathering practice, not the least of which is the maxim stating that every 90 years, barring pestilence, war or natural disaster, a given segment of the population will quadruple. It is of profound interest that the 1870 census indicated zero population growth for Blacks just 5 years after the end of the Civil War, and the presumed end of breeding slaves to enhance profit (students of history will find the exchange between President Lincoln and the Director of the Census in the midst of the war intriguing, if not shocking, as the President sought to end the conflict by paying off the slave owners; among other strategies). http://www2.census.gov/prod2/decennial/documents/03322287%20no121-130ch08.pdf (page 126 re: 1870 census

    Post 1 of 4
Colleagues: The question du jour, if not of the century, is why this article was necessary to begin with? In the aftermath of an extraordinary and world acknowledged win on the podium by Senator Obama against Senator McCain, I see these type articles as pandering to racist inclinations on both sides of the cultural divide. As a former Newsweek correspondent having a thorough understanding of its internal mechanisms relative to content development, I must admit I knew it was coming. Moreover, it has nothing to do with being "A search for the version of the story closest to the truth" in a Woodward-esque sense, and everything to do with maintaining the societal status quo. Assuming this post passes the "appropriateness" litmus test applied to varying degrees within this medium, I'd like to inject elements of "visioning" processes as developed by the RAND Corporation within the historical time-frame and context that saw the passage of the National Security Act of 1947. Designed to help the Department of Defense "think the unthinkable" (i.e., the "Nuclear Winter" aftermath of an atomic weaponry exchange as postulated by Dr. Carl Sagan, et al.) and to test assumptions that could lead to an entirely different outcome other than those one might expect, visioning is more than useful in potentially bringing about a change, even radical change, within the human psyche.

To HarleyisHere: Who the frick do you think you are?! So far, you've called Sen. McCain a coward, a frightened PTSD victim, and someone who did nothing in the military, oh, and also that the deaths of my fellow 5,170 servicemen and women who died, fighting for the freedom of speech you so clearly don't deserve because you refuse to engage you brain prior to doing so, were actually "abortions"!!!!! Let me tell you something, SON, I have and still do serve this country, something you obviously have not. Don't mention their lives or deaths again--you don't have the right. Senator McCain was an officer and a POW, and is in no way a coward--you are the coward, cowering behind your screen name which blesses you w/ anonymity, and your keyboard and computer screen, saying whatever filth happens to come from your piehole. There is enough blame on the problems currently in this country to go around, but you have done your fair share on this blog of fueling the fire of bigotry and ignorance. Your three questions that you keep throwing in people's faces--BS!!! Are you not aware of the 3 branches of gov't in this country? I love how everything is Bush's fault--one man responsible for the Executive branch, while 535 men and women make up the Legislative branch, responsible for drafting and passing laws, bills, budgets, etc. Oh yeah, and for the last 4 years, the Democrats have had the majority in both the House of Reps and the Senate. You are a boob--strap a nipple to your head for Halloween, would ya?! You want to talk facts--Clinton, on 3 occasions, refused to take out Bin Laden; Al Qaeda was in Iraq, in the Northern provinces, training men for missions against the US when we went into Iraq in 2003. I was there . . . Do not further insult my fellow soldiers again, alive, dead, or veteran. Stay on point with the blog topic at hand or un-ass yourself from it entirely, son. Don't bother responding, as you will not do so in a manner which will respect me, Senators McCain and Obama, those who have taken the time to educate themselves about the candidates they plan to vote for, or the men and women who are or have served our great nation. To believe that the rights my service protect are used by a bigot like yourself proves that this is a free country. I think you've said enough here, Harleyishere . . . This SSG and medic is out . . . (thank you to the other Americans who've tried to counteract the poppycock garbage that Harleyishere felt necesary to share--you cannot right those kinds of wrongs--you are wrong, Harleyishere, and you've got the rest of your life to study and figure out the exact depths to which you are so, and you're gonna need every waking second, judging by the stuff you've mentioned on this site).

    • Posted By: JRWhittler @ 09/29/2008 3:40:59 PM

      • Posted By: American-Soldier @ 09/29/2008 5:16:53 PM

I am happy to provide my location, my rank and what I do, but my name--let's be smart here, sir. Furthermore, I stated that Harley was a coward for doing what he/she said, and that it was easy because of the anonymity provided by the blog and username to do so. Are you going to honestly sit here and presume to call me a coward--a Staff Sergeant and combat medic, because I denounced her calling a former Vietnam War POW a coward. Are you really going to call an American soldier a coward for doing that . . . because that's what I did, and that's all I did.

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 09/29/2008 2:59:02 PM

Dems have only been in control since 2006--that's only 2 years. I respect your service in the military, but please don't pretend you are protecting our freedom of speech in Iraq. You are protecting foreigners and Bush's oil money. Sadam was no credible threat to the US--it has been proven many times. Aren't you the least bit ticked off that American soldiers are used to protect corporate interests and oil company execs while over there?
McCain is most certainly not a coward, I agree with you. But please don't think that you are protecting my rights by being in Afghanistan or Iraq. I'm saddened by the loss of so many brave American lives over a fruitless, pointless war. I also have every right to speak of those lives lost because I am an American, too. I want our men and women home safely.

      • Posted By: American-Soldier @ 09/29/2008 4:14:00 PM

Thank you for your thanks and support, but I'd like to clear the air on one thing. My fellow soldiers and I swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. That is how no matter where my body is located, I am doing just that. Secondly, removing a dictator who is second only to Hitler when it comes to genocide is not pointless, nor is dealing with those responsible for 9/11 (you remember the planes crashing into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, along w/ the one that went down in Pennsylvania)--yeah, that's why we're in Afghanistan--not pointless either. As far as the whole "we're only in Iraq to protect oil" that's exactly why we now pay almost 300% percent more at the pump now. The media doesn't report what we do on the ground every day over there, and what does get reported is negative, biased, and doesn't stray far from a meager body count anymore these days. Compare the number of US soldiers killed and wounded to the number of people killed in accidents or are murdered in just one major city in this country. The price of freedom isn't free, but we know why we're over there, and we know what we've accomplished, and have yet to accomplish. We don't relish being away from our homes and loved ones, but we are there for reasons much larger that coporate capitalism and oil. We were attacked, and have since been fighting through red tape to finish off our attackers. So as for Afghanistan, WE ARE protecting your rights, and doing our best, stupid politics withstandang, to finish off Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban, as well as Al Qaeda. I don't presume anything when it comes to my service, but with all due respect, don't tell me what my service and the blood that's been spilt does and doesn't stand for. I'm serving because you didn't, and that was your right to chose--I'm not putting you down at all, I'm making a point. You do have every right to talk about those who have died--my comment was directed at one specific individual who was abusing their memory, service, and what it stood for. If I've offended you, I apologize, but again, with all due respect, please don't tell me what my service means or stands for. Again, thank you for your kindness and support.

You may soon get a [McCain-Giuliani] Ticket...

There are Change in VP Staus Rumblings going on in [Camp McCain]

Paired with Sarah Palin's absence from Friday night's Presidential debate, this photo-op of the McCain's boarding their campaign plane that afternoon for Mississippi is phenomenally awkward.

Given that the "visual vernacular" in a photo like this tends to reference the presidential and vice-presidential couple combined with the fact John, Cindy, Sarah and First Dude have been stuck together lately like super glue, this shot of Giuliani and Judy Nathan is particularly attention grabbing.

Typically, I would caution anyone from assuming, based on a photo like this, that McCain was even thinking of throwing Palin overboard. Considering how McCain not only trotted out Giuliani this way, but also lined him up against Biden as McCain's main post-debate spinmaster, though, it almost destines the photo to raise such speculation.

But then again, punitive acting out -- in this case, temporarily "elevating" Giuliani in order to publicly humiliate Palin for embarrassing McCain with her dismal interview with Katie Couric -- is also consistent with how McCain flies.

Oh wait ! If I riot because Giuliani is selected, and the blacks riot because Obama loses, That means ther's definately going to be rioting ! I'm moving to Alaska till this election is over !!!
