Racism is causing some folks - mostly older folks - to vote against their best interests. They just can't vote for a black man, even though the other guy - a wite guy - is an eratic, flag waving hypocrite.

What A Debate Reveals: Anger, Entitlement and Contempt
What I found shocking reflecting on last night's debate was how angry and entitled McCain was, in a very open way.
McCain's manner was one of that who believed he should not even be on the same stage with this person. This indicates a person of extreme rights and extreme wrongs, not a statesmanlike persona, but an angry and impulsive one.
McCain carries strong ideas of what a liberal is, ideas that very little from his cherished ideas of who betrayed the nation during the Vietnam war. A stock character, driven and created by his own rage, carried, as it has been since the '70s, with a virtual ideological blindness--blinded by a contemptuous rage--that there are others who cannot understand the world the way he can. This is not judgment, but angry certainty. This is not readiness, but a just-contained rage that he should be confronted by such ideas.
You can see it in his constricted "can you believe it" rage at one who disagrees with him. This kind of contemptuous, angry dismissal of others ideas leads easily into the impulsive decisions of the last few months--generated with barely contained contemptuous rejection of those who would reject his ideas--only the most recent forms of those essential constructs--a contemptible media, easily fed with false notions and panaceas, as he believes they were earlier in his life; intellectuals, whose reason and deliberation is contrasted with the sharp, impulsive action that for his life has constituted a certain knowledge, and an angry, certain need to sweep away those who would stand in the path of righteous certainty.
What is beautifully ironic is how McCain maintains this contempt even as he switches from one position to another in the opportunistic second--this is when the look of contempt and entitlement turns, for a moment, to anxiety and panic.
Soon, however, the gaze is back. No matter what the new position is--impulsively determined, desperately grasped--if only "they" knew better. If only "they" knew the truth.
This kind of ideological rigidity and certainty (note how Obama could not contain himself from smiling when McCain attempted to compare him to Bush in that regard) combined with impulsive decision making, from the "gut" of sure knowledge, is what has created the outcomes of the past 8 years.
It was--in a setting where one would not expect it to be, where one would expect McCain to contain it--glaring apparent last night.
This is an amplification of the last 8 years rather than a change.
We do not need to experience this type of decision making again.

Surprise, surprise, Paulsen thinks Obama is nicer? That's because Obama doesn't present a threat to Paulsen. McCain has shown himself ready to call individuals to account for the non-performance of their jobs. Obama says whatever he thinks the person he is with wants to hear.
I'll take McCain in a crisis. Call the cards the way they stand and don't try to bluff your way into the white house.
Although usually AFTER the time ewhen his behavior would be meaningful. For example, in 2004 he campaigned wildly for Bush. I don't remember him holding Bush to account.
Gee, why was that? Oh yeah, because it was in the interest of John McCain, although not the country.
Gosh, another lie....
Mr. Alter!
Did you know that Bill ayers and his weather Underground terrorist outfit were all white? they were dufus college kids and claimed association with the vietnamese, American Blacks and just...EVERYBODY! Anybody!!!
And thier ambition was to bring about CHANGE! By bringing all the violence around the world to the US streets!
Yup!
You can research and share with us the weathermen underground story and not be accused of RACISM!
You will find, and have the integrety to share, that they thought violence was completely justifiable! that three of them blew themselves up making their bombs to put in public places!
Theis was an all white organization trying to wow HIPPY white kids! and radicle black groups shunned them in due course.
Lets get the facts out about Bill Ayers and ACORN!
What a red herring. You must be running short of any remotely plausible ploys....does the RNC at least pay you minimumw wage for writing this drivel?
Hey, genius - ever heard of "Kennedy-McCain" or "McCain-Feingold"? You really are ignorant of the facts!
They say that those who do not learn from their mistakes are destined to repeat them.
All of the virtuous proposals that McCain claims he supports with respect to "working across the isle" are virtually identical to those of his predecessor, George Bush, during the 2000 campaign. He also pledged to work across the isle, but what he meant was, he would gladly shake the hand of any Democrat that accepted whatever policy the Bush administration proposed.
McCain is no different. All of his major platform positions are virtually identical to those of Bush. Sure he'll take a Democrat on board, so long that person is willing to abandon their own political tenets and accept in full everything that the McCain administration proposes.
McCain is politically to the right of George Bush on matters of foreign policy. Palin is to the right of Bush on matters of social policy. Doesn't leave much room for bipartisanship, and his message of change apparently is referring to a shift to the far right for our national policies.
McCain and Palin are hardly the reformers that they claim to be. Their obnoxious ads and smug, sarcastic speeches are little more than typical political spin. The GOP has turned it into an art form. The more they lie, the easier it gets, and eventually they even begin to believe their own lies. But the Machiavellian mentality in the McCain campaign eases their collective conscience. They absolve themselves of their sins by continually telling themselves, "If it gets us elected, it's all good. If it gets us elected, it's all good".
Not self-professed! He is a professed American Hero. And Omaba is a self-professed, umm, oh yes "community organizer"! And smooth talking politician. Change, change, change, Obama!
Jonathan, your friend should tell Grandpa that the best pilots in World War II, bar none, were the Tuskegee Airmen, and they were black. My father, who was a white bombardier, said every time his crew heard the Tuskegee Airmen coming to escort them, they knew they would be safe.
John McCain is experiencing cognitive difficulties and I think he is showing the beginnings of dementia. I think Sam Donaldson said that as politely as he could when he said "The age issue is on the table again."
Let's look at events since late August. First, he is angry, irritable during a friendly Time magazine interview, http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1836909,00.html refusing to answer the most benign questions. Then he delivers a speech at the RNC that is stiff, robotic and he smiles at inopportune times, the content of the speech and his grin are at odds. He travels with Palin and puts her front and center as he melds into the background. Cindy is always present at his events, just like Nancy Reagan was when Ronnie started to falter. A recent Newsweek article points http://www.newsweek.com/id/159146 out that he has little spontaneous interaction with voters. Then he makes the gaffe confusing Spain"s Zapatero with a Latin American dictator. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-goldstein/john-mccains-seor-moment_b_127601.html And this week's respond to the financial crisis was all over the map. As George Will said, it was vehemence over coherence. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/21/abc-panel-tears-into-mcca_n_128055.html
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/22/AR2008092202583.html
During the debate, on the content McCain performed adequately but he came across as a grumpy old man. His refusal to ever look at Obama directly, to even shift his body position towards his opponent, was angry and dismissive.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/220226.php
His age and history (heavy drinking, boxing, thus blows to the head) make this possibility of dementia quite plausible...and dangerous.

OMG< I was finally cooling down to Obama...after Palin and economy. But when I see Alters face, I natuarally turn into an antiliberal.
Well perhaps Grandpa Rotary doesn't know much about that the "white pilot" he likes who has crashed 5 military planes - one of which landed him in the Hotel Hanoi! Someone needs to tell Grandpa to be real careful about what he wishs [especially with McCain] since that character he may have actually had some years back has apparently left him hanging around with his dear 'Rovian' friends Phil Gramm, Lindsay Graham and let's not forget Joey Lieberman! They all have the same philosphies and believe that DEREGULATION is the only way to keep their wealth in tact and growing. After you can't help your friends on K Street and Wall Street if you don't listen to their needs. Oh come on, you know what they say, "we're gonna continue to get the gold and we're continue to give the remainder of America the shaft". Isn't that the way it's always been in America? Well we certainly don't want to make any changes now, do we?
There should be a mandatory test for the electorate to pass in order to be entitled to vote! Our country is in this mess due to people like Grandpa Rotary. It's maddening to think that we have an opportunity to have a most intelligent, level headed man thinking ahead to a green future to be our leader faced off against an erratic knee-jerker who lives in the past with the mentality of a warmonger and an explosive temperment, and people like Grandpa Rotary would rather chose the latter since he is "white". No wonder this country is up to its eyeballs in manure! With thinking like Grandpa's, we will continue to stagnate. I do know if McCain and Palin manage to win, we will absolutely become the LAUGHING STOCK of the world. He gives the appearance of arrogant ineptitude and she can't construct a complete or concise sentence! I say, "thanks, but no thanks for that bridge to DESPAIR!
It is such a sad day in America when a man like Obama with little quailifications for the office of president receives the blessing of supposed intelligent writers. Noticing with my feeble mind that 95% of Hollywood and 95% of the mainstream media all think in the terms of the left. Another factor that this feeble brained man has obeserved. I've been to and throughout out Russia. Guess what? It (left wing) doesn't work! Great people, but a waste land except for Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The fact that 95% of journalist, actors and attorneys all thinking the same way is a scarey thought. That is not logical! In any working and normal field there are political differences with a more balanced % left and right.. You stated Warren Buffet and other being left minded. There are many businesemen that are right minded. See the logic? There is no logic in the 95 percenters.
The most important thing I can state is, "I agree that your idealogy is admirable and a wonderful world it could be. The only problem is that it doesn't work!" So you have to see the solution is the next best thing. Common sense tells you to let your children grow up and become responsible. Socialism leans toward helping those in need. God Bless you leftys for that too, but you don't stop there. You want to give to anyone that doesn't do or want to do a hand out. That actually is nice too. Except for one little problem. I don't like working an extra 20 to 30 hours a week to pay for it! Responsibility, hard work, freedom, and our own road map and not the government's plan is my solution!
Not being able to look someone in the eyes for 90 minutes of debate with them, is a universal sign of unfathomable weakness, disrespect and arrogance. Now I realize that these are all attributes with a in the plus column if your a neo-con, but the other 70% of the Country is done with this goober.
Enduring pain and agony in a POW camp is horrible and we must honor those that endured such hardship on behalf of his/her country; however, this cannot be the basis to make someone President of the United States. We have endured 8 years of "shoot first and ask questions later" and if McCain is elected, we will have 4 more years of the same. I don't know if Obama will be able to manage the mess he will inherit if he does win but I know in my heart McCain is not up to the job.
I do not want a hotshot fly boy with the power to push The Button in the White House. Impulsive is not the quality we need here.
In his latest book, McCain says he knew he had a SAM guided missile on his tail, but rather than evade he chose to try and finish the bombing run.
Why in god's name would we give power to drop The Bomb to a man who clearly would rather drop them than survive? No wonder the rest of the world is worried about us - no wonder our sworn enemies like Iran and Korea want atomic bombs of their own. The present Bozo in Chief is nerve-wracking enough - can you imagine how worried the world will be if McCain has access to nuclear weapons?
And if McCain doesn't survive, in the wings is a woman who's idea of crisis management is: "you don't blink." She sounds like a teenage playing chicken with her parent's station wagon. Not the person we need with access to nuclear weapons, either.
These aren't people with character or people who are characters - they are tow people who are too emotionally unstable to be president and vice president,
Flying too low to down power lines? Ignoring a warning signal while flying a bombing mission and getting his wing shot off landing him in a POW camp for 5 years? We don't need a gunslingin' cowboy in these hard times. And, since when does being a POW entitle one to the presidency? How many other people, victims of oppression, torture and deprivation consider themselves capable of leading a troubled world leader among nations This doe
(completing the comment). This does not seem to me to be the narrative that describes the person qualified to thoughtfully, purposefully and courageously make the hard decisions in a our current state of debacle.
If John McCain Were President...
Based upon statements made by John McCain in the Presidential debate last night, some people in the country and the world believe these 2 things are official:
1. The United States' military was "defeated" by the Viet Cong, although the U.S. has never signed an "Instrument of Surrender" as was signed by the Japanese aboard the USS Missouri in 1945.
2. The United States tortures prisoners, although the U.S. does not "officially" condone torture.
During the Viet Nam War, the Viet Cong tortured U.S. Prisoners of War into espousing this sort of propaganda.
For a Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States to repeat such propaganda today is, at a minimum, irresponsible.
Regrettably, John McCain compromised his character a longtime ago.
One should be cautioned that preferring to believe what is pleasant rather than what is true, and becoming very angry with anyone who destroys an agreeable delusion subjects those believers to the incessant consequences of such belief.
Sen. McCain might have made a good president at one time, but I do believe that these times call for something different like you stated in your article. I can't for sure say that Sen. Obama is the man for the Job, but he has a lot of the qualities that I look for in a leader of any kind.
Side bar: Too bad your friends father didn't realize how much harder it might have been for that black pilot to get into that seat, then maybe he would have been honored to fly on that plane.
Wake up, America!
