Obama has been the beneficiary of more Fanny/Freddie money than any other Senator/Congress person in existence. This needs to be talked about also......Franklin Raines, the Clinton appointee who ran those institutions into the ground before running off with millions, was advising Obama on economics.....please turn your searing intellectual analysis on to both parties and both candidates, then you will regain credibility. If not, you are nothing more than shills for the Democratic party masquerading as journalists.

Your discusiion on Davis's not drawing a salary from his firm as the firm continues to accept payments from Freddie Mac don't make any sense what so ever. 1. He stopped taking a salary from Davis Manafort, 2. He went to work for McCain for a salary which he has sent TO Davis Manafort (which he is not drawing a salary FROM), 3. Freddie Mac continues to send payments to Davis Manafort (which you have already said Mr. Davis is not drawing a salary from), and as to be expected, 4. Davis Manafort company does not want to discuss a current client with an outsider. NOW WHERE IS THE STORY IN THIS NON-STORY?

    • Posted By: dishington @ 09/28/2008 10:08:23 PM

Rick Davis still owns an equity stake in the entity. He didn't sell it or place the proceeds into a blind trust. He temporarily withheld drawing a salary. You cannot be so naiive as to believe that when the owner foregoes a salary temporarily that he is free from the taint of what that company does And if its all so innoicent, then why the attack of Obama? You can't have it both ways. In this case, you don't have it at all. McCain does remind me of a legendary soldier-general who was a one-time war hero with a checkered past and questionable instincts, but who always took the aggressive posture, mocked the reflective as "pussies" and charged ahead whenever he saw the chance, heedless to the consequneces. His name was George Armstrong Custer.. .

McCain is immoral, a liar and completely self-absorbed with himself. People in glass house should not throw stones. I will vote for Obama in Colorado.

Blind loyalty to a tainted associate. Epic hypocracy. Never mind the Keating 5 pot calling the Rezko kettle black. Hmmm. Who does that remind me of? McCain's notion of "country first" is reminiscent of the old line about "What's good for General Motors is good for the country." McCain seems unable to able to distinguish between what's good for him and what's good for the country. Four more years of this? Let's hope not.

In 2005, for the first time in history, a serious Fannie and Freddie reform bill, S. 190, was passed by the Senate Banking Committee. The bill gave a regulator power to crack down, and would have required the companies to eliminate their investments in risky assets. If that bill had become law, then the world today would be different. But the bill didn't become law, for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it on a party-line vote in the committee, signaling that this would be a partisan issue. Republicans, tied in knots by the tight Democratic opposition, couldn't even get the Senate to vote on the matter.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aSKSoiNbnQY0

In support of S 190, also known as the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, John McCain said: "For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac--known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs--and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO's report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO's report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay."

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/record.xpd?id=109-s20060525-16

Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005 would have Amended the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act of 1992 to establish: (1) in lieu of the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), an independent Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Agency which shall have authority over the Federal Home Loan Bank Finance Corporation, the Federal Home Loan Banks, the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac); and (2) the Federal Housing Enterprise Board.
Most importantly with regard to the CDS situation, S. 190 set forth operating, administrative, and regulatory provisions respecting: (1) assessment authority; (2) authority to limit nonmission-related assets; (3) minimum and critical capital levels; (4) risk-based capital test; (5) capital classifications and undercapitalized enterprises; (6) enforcement actions and penalties; (7) golden parachutes; and (8) reporting. Adoption of these regulatory provisions would have undoubtably affected the way CDSs were dealt with in "private" enterprises.
The bill would have also amended the Federal Home Loan Bank Act to establish the Federal Home Loan Bank Finance Corporation., and transfered the functions of the Office of Finance of the Federal Home Loan Banks to such Corporation. If this had been in place three years ago, this whole situation might have been averted.

Obama is the second largest reciever of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac political donatiuons, not just $100,000.
I wish the liberal media, who is in Obama's back pocket, would actually do full investigations and report ALL the news so they would educate people evenly and fairly

  • Posted By: RockyDawg2008 @ 09/28/2008 1:50:10 PM

Why don't we talk about how Obama took over $100,000 from Freddie Mac and Fannie May? The #2 Senator after Chris Dodd who took money from them. Interesting how he hit #2 on this list in only a little more than 2 yrs. Also lets talk about Ayers and Rezko?

    • Posted By: Knute @ 09/28/2008 5:30:44 PM

There is a huge difference between Obama passively receiving campaign contributions ($100,000 or so contributed out of a couple hundred million raised in total) and Davis/McCain shaking down Fannie Mae for consulting/lobbying fees for work that was never performed and that Fannie Mae felt they couldn't refuse. The ethical difference is enormous.

      • Posted By: Skypoint @ 09/28/2008 5:44:19 PM

Please, post a factual link to this "couple of hundred million". (I said factual) I'm sure all of us would like to see it. What can be proved is Obama is second on the donation list.

  • Posted By: Knute @ 09/28/2008 5:42:27 PM

There is a huge ethical difference between Obama receiving campaign contributions (frankly, from multiple interests, including banking, who are all trying to hedge their bets) and Davis/McCain shaking down Fannie Mae for cunsulting/lobbying fees for work that was never performed, and which Fannie Mae now says they felt they had no choice but to pay. To draw a moral equivilence between the two is intellectually dishonest in the extreme.

Politicians often accept contributions from special interests with which they fundamentally disagree, and in this case Obama took $100K (out of a couple hundred millions dollars raised) even though he has consistently supported increased accountability and regulation of the financial services industry. There's simply nothing unusual there. Rick Davis (McCain's campaign manager), on the other hand, shook down Fannie Mae for work that was never performed while the McCain campaign publicly claimed that all connections between them had been severed. The two cases are in different universes in terms of their ethical implications.
