Do all of the complainers out there realize they are griping about a FREE service?? Nobody is forcing you to have a mail recepticle! Simple solution...if junk mail is ruining your life, and the PO is so incompitent, take down your mail box and/or refuse delivery.

Isn't there some stupid federal law that says you can't do that? I know the post master in my home town threatened us with jail time if we didn't get our mailbox fixed after someone ran over it....saying that it's "federal property" and all.

I think the idea of taking down your own mailbox is great though if the laws allow you to do that.

Yes, this is ridiculous. There are many days when the only mail we get goes directly into the trash. The USPS is directly responsible for more printed paper than any other business I can think of. The crazy thing is that we have to pay another business to stop this madness instead of being able to just get the USPS to stop!

The only other business like it are phone companies, who dump phone books on our front door steps. We used to get a set of phone books from one company, now we get 4 or 5 sets from different competing companies. It's another thing that goes right into the trash. I haven't opened a phone book in at least 5 years, probably more!

THE USPS IS NOT THE ONES MAKING THE ADVERTISEMENTS AND YOU WILL NOT SEE THE USPS LOGO ON ANY OF YOUR JUNKMAIL. WE ARE MERELY PROVIDING A SERVICE TO THE COMPANIES THAT ARE MAILING OUT THE "JUNK" SO IF U WANT TO BLAME SOMEONE FOR ALL THE TRASH IN YOUR MAILBOX BLAME THE COMPANY FROM WHOM IT CAME FROM.!! AND PLEASE DON'T POST ANY MORE COMMENTS YOUR THOUGHTS ARE JUST RIDICULOUS & IGNORANT

The US Postal Service is the second largest employer in the US. In this economy, is it really wise to endanger the middle class livelihood of one of the last surviving remnants of unionized blue collar employment? Do we really want nearly 700,000 taxpayers to be out of work?

Right . Let's also keep the horseshoe industry alive. It's enormous and so important. Horseshoes are pretty sturdy and they were good enough for your grandfather. C'mon, you can't just stop doing something because "times change". That's crazy talk. And don't forget the stable boys! Do you know how many people are employed shoveling horse-sh*t and spreading straw?! Anyway, these newfangled "automobiles" will only ruin the economy and destroy good jobs. Long live the horseshoe industry!

Instead of denigrating the United States Postal Service you should question why Ms. Plimpton, and others, paid GreenDimes for a service that the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) offers for free. You can register on their - Do Not Mail - list on line and achieve the same results. Furthermore; this is not just about the USPS. There are over 300,000 American Workers involved in the printing and production of direct mail solicitation. Think of their families the next time you feel the need to hug a tree or take cheap shots at the people that deliver your mail. Paper, which is 100% biodegradable, is a renewable resource and no hardwood or old growth trees are used to make it. What is next, Christmas Tree Farms?

You mean we should all keep paying to so that the US government can retain 700,000 unskilled overpaid workers? Quite frankly, in a weak economy, this is less justifiable than ever. When we all had big bucks and no worries, this kind of thing could be tolerated, but to pay someone $20/hour for a job that takes very little skill or training when we're all already hurting makes no sense at all.

      • Posted By: ls2001 @ 10/01/2008 6:04:11 PM

please tell me what exactly it is that you are paying for???? the only thing u pay me for is if i have to deliver a letter to someone that you sent it to & i'm sorry to have to break your piggy bank for the measley 42 cents that you just paid me to deliver that letter FOR YOU! you do not pay for me to deliver YOUR "junkmail" or YOUR bills !! but if i lose my job because of all this bullshit YOU WILL be paying for my unemployement

  • Posted By: wg4958 @ 10/01/2008 2:57:00 PM

OH BOO HOO! The mismanagement of the U.S. postal service is another product of over compensation of American hierarchy. Does anyone know the names of the board of directors for this company and what their pay is? How can their fuel cost, comparatively speaking, be any higher now than what it was five or ten years ago? If one figures the reduction in fleet size due to mini neighborhood post office boxes coupled with less miles being driven because of this new procedure plus reduced fleet vehicle maintenance cost then the increased fuel cost over the past tens years should have been canceled out of the equation. It is a simple mathematical equation; x # of vehicles ??? y # of vehicles = z # of vehicles = less money being spent on the cost of fleet purchase. The resultant # of vehicles also yields less maintenance cost in so far as oil changes, tune ups, tires and etc go. Couple those two savings with x # of miles driven ??? y number of reduced miles = less fuel. As far as junk mail goes; I read an article the other day that stated one of the largest contributors to garbage in today???s landfills is - JUNK Mail. If the post office fails then the junk mail problem goes away. That would result in some environmental pluses; less fossil fuel being burned would equate to less pollution in the air, less garbage filling up the land fills and less forest razed for unwanted JUNK MAIL. The failure of the post office sounds like an environmentally acceptable event.

Leaving it with a laugh. One time I wee-weed in a big 20 ounce cup in the back of the mail truck -- I REALLY had to go -- and no bathroom within the 1/2 mile allowable distance. I hope the Post Office does okay, I want someone who is accountable for what I believe is important. They have a Complaint Form that you can fill out and you will receive a response to your complaint. And, if you don't receive a delivery that is guaranteed on time, the sender can receive a refund. And that means one minute late. Postal people make pretty good money, but have you ever seen a postal employee with a really nice house in an upscale neighborhood with a really good car? Not usually unless other members of the household are gainfully employed.

Does the USPS really need need to pay people $25 - $35 an hour to sort mail? Or to deliver mail? Last I checked, neither one of those are very skilled positions. I'm sure a lettuce washer at McDonald's or a cashier at Walmart making $6.50 an hour has the same "skills" and would love to sit and sort mail for twice their current salary which would be less than 50% of what that position pays now. A little advise USPS, focus on your internal issues and not the external issues. The fastest and easiest way to control your revenues or lack there of is to change what you have control of which in this case is your work force and the pay scale.

wow !! thats about all i can say about that!! don't knock it til you try it !!! since its such an easy job & we get paid soooo much money why don't u come in & apply for it ?? u know since its such easy money & all. trust me its alot harder than standing at a register at walmart & passing groceries over a scanner

    • Posted By: Ruralroutethree @ 10/01/2008 4:28:34 PM

Try learning the " scheme" to sort mail maybe to 10-15 routes or more or as a carrier learning to sort the mail for the route then load your vehicle in a way that the mail wiil be in order for delivery, watch traffic as you pull up to and away from the box. I have seen people with colege degrees who could not make the grade, Yes, these clerks and carriers earn every die they are paid. Been there, done that

    • Posted By: fishtank165 @ 10/01/2008 11:30:42 AM

Did you know they have to pay for their health insurance, they do not have a pension like before they have to contribute like everyone else. They also have to take a test. Let's see if you can pass the test. Most
of the carriers also have a AA or BA. Walk in there shoes before you judge!

They don't seem to realize, that they are actually CAUSING the worldwide financial crises!!!

The Postal Service is offering "early outs" now for employees with at least 20 years and 50 years of age. So, if you are complaining now about the service, wait until that person shows up delivering your mail who could care less about getting it to the right spot, because they are working for alot less with no benefits, and working every day of the week, often no days off, and just when they think they can go home, they are sent out in that truck that is 126 degrees inside and the customers are griping because the mail is late and the supervisors are giving them a letter of warning and all they want to do is "get rid of the mail", whatever it takes, and that means putting it hurriedly in a box you believe it should go to, or just throwing it in the out-going mail bucket to be processed the next day, like I have seen some do. They aren't getting paid much, so the job is not that important to them, and they can then leave to go wherever. Complain about the mail then --

  • Posted By: mailerdeamon69 @ 10/01/2008 5:36:26 PM

How about we all go on a three day schedule, that works for me. Oh wait do we still get paid for 5 or 6 or do we just do 5 or 6 days work in three for three days pay?

  • Posted By: morad @ 10/01/2008 5:29:27 PM

if the post office is hurting, why dont they go to a 3 day delivery schedule. Do we really need the mail six days a week, especially if 52% of it is junk and i know that figure is higher in my mailbox. I get my Newsweek on Tue., but i can get it on Wed.

  • Posted By: chickenpants @ 10/01/2008 5:20:56 PM

You know the population is growing -- routes are getting longer, more deliveries to make every day. And not everyone receives "junk" mail. But the letter carrier will carry that one piece of "junk" mail to your door or mail receptical the same as he does your first class mail, such as your monthly check. And, if you are disabled or unable to retrieve your mail from your box, arrangements can be made so that the carrier can place the mail in a receptical that is accessible -- and yes, that often means parking the truck, curbing the tires, unfastening the seatbelt, and dismounting the truck and walking to the designated drop-off. This takes a little longer than just driving by and opening a box and moving on, but the Postal Service does this as a courtesy. And alot of your letter carriers keep an eye on these same customers to make sure they are all right. This isn't about saving money or being slow, it is about being compassionate.

  • Posted By: mailerdeamon69 @ 10/01/2008 5:10:44 PM

For all of those who can't understand mail being misdelivered. Please let me know your secret to being perfect 100 % of the time. Look at your mail and see if you know where you live. If you write nubers and letters that are not easily read by the machines then misdeliveries will occur. Also, When I type I know I make errors that I don't catch so tell me if you get mail thaat is yours but either your name or number was wrong. Odd I never heard anyone complain about that type of mail that was delivered correctly by all those incompetent mail carriers. If you can do it perfectly, I am sure the PO has a job for you.

    • Posted By: abraham1 @ 10/01/2008 5:14:57 PM

I make no claim to being 100% perfect anytime. I do know that if I repeated the same mistake over and over and over I would be forced to admit to stupidity. I realize mistakes are made and I have made my share. But once I'm called on it, I don't do it again.

no -- the reason there are employees with over 30 years on the job is because they aren't getting what they deserve as far as retirement packages go. if they would offer them a decent retirement package they would be able to retire but i don't think that if someone has dedicated their lives for over 30 years to a job that they desereve to be fired!!!!

  • Posted By: curiousgirl @ 10/01/2008 4:31:16 PM

To all you postal workers out there... I have a question. Why does my mail carrier stop and sit in his truck at the end of my street for 30 to 45 mins or more on some days after he finishes delivering all the mail in my neighborhood? I'll bet he is getting paid for all that time, so what could he be doing? I walked up to him one day to ask a question and he was reading a book! What gives??

    • Posted By: patchdog @ 10/01/2008 4:35:35 PM

Geeeee curiousgirl..., could it possibly be a LUCH BREAK ? Pretty sure most job throughout the country provide those

      • Posted By: ls2001 @ 10/01/2008 5:09:06 PM

well to answer your question. yes we do need a break sometimes. have you ever tried to walk around in the heat or the rain going up & down steps for at least 5 or 6 hours a day carrying about 15 pounds extra weight?? i'm guessing you haven't! and yes we do get paid for it so long as we don't go over our allotted time there is no problem . just like every one else that works gets breaks during the day so do we, we do not have to take them but sometimes we have to or we will pass out from exhaustion. i'm not trying to be sarcastic but people just dont' realize how hard our job really is

    • Posted By: ls2001 @ 10/01/2008 5:01:20 PM

well i deliver city mail and if you dan't understand how tough of a job it is why don't you try carrying at least 15 extra pounds on your side and walk for over 5 or 6 hours going up & down steps in the heat or the rain & then come back & tell me if u had to stop for about 10 min. once in a while. people think this job is easy but its not plus we have to put up with all the other crap that goes along with it. so before you judge why not try it out for yourself & see what we really do for a living

  • Posted By: bpokorny @ 10/01/2008 5:06:44 PM

Save the Postal Service AND lower postal rates -

The Postal Service can eliminate mail carrier positions and require all postal customers to subscribe or rent a PO box. Customers would have to drive to the PO (or new satellite PO's) to pick up mail...but hey' I'd do that twice a month to pick up any non-emailed bills (this could conserve on gas for both USPS or customers and a hefty payroll too.) As for junk mail, it "should' be eliminated, especially with everyone wanting to go "green."

  • Posted By: pwbohn @ 10/01/2008 5:06:00 PM

In the battle with e-mail, aand just to behave like a modern corporation that maximizes its income by charging what the market will bear, the USPS must adopt a policy the reverse of its present one and charge MORE for bulk (junk) mailers, and let that subsidize and drive down the price of personal, first class mail. In this world, to offer deep discounts to commercial operators and charge private individuals double makes no sense.

  • Posted By: mailerdeamon69 @ 10/01/2008 5:01:31 PM

You are also seeing a big push towards contract delivery and non exclusive use of your mailbox. This will have an impact on you directly. First the mailers can and will be delivered by anyone, right into your mailbox which is prohibited now.
Second, the contract delivery people will be less likely to be of the same calipher of your mailman. I think big business is behind this as a do not mail list is possible, therefore if these 2 proposals get put into place, anyone and everyone can use your mailbox to deliver their itemd to you. Thyere will be no one place to call to solve a problem, and your regular mail will be at least visible to anyone delivering other items. Another possibility is when will these others be delivering? The PO delivers during business hrs for the most part. What will stop contract delivery workers who take on more than they can deliver, or get behind for whatevre reason. Will they be in your neighborhoods all hrs of the day or night? Who are they? The vast majority of Postal workers often are neighbors or from neiboring towns. Given all this "junk mail" may be a bargain. So be carefule what you wish for. And anyone can plant a tree, you don't need a company using that as a crutch to increase their business. Sounds like just another gimmick to get you to pay $20.00 for something you could do yourself for free if that was your desire.

  • Posted By: mailerdeamon69 @ 10/01/2008 4:50:39 PM

All the post office has to do is raise the rates on bulk mail and a lot of it will end. On the other hand the price we pay for letters and parcels will likely rise. The PO always paid others to transport the mail, usually airlines, how ever my guess is as their on time ratings faltered, other options like Fed Ex were used. Also the PO does deliver many items that originate with UPS, FEDEX, and DHL. It's referred to as the last mile. I think that as long as the mail truck is going to your house, this is a better idea rather than have the other 3 also send a truck to your block all on the same day. The problem is that in doing that the PO is not getting the letter mail out as quickly as it could. Also while most bulk mail is thrown out, it usually goes into your towns recycle program, which generates revenue for your town. by ending junk mail, you will likely pay higher waste management fees.
The point is I dislike when I hear these half baked solutions when the whole story is not apparent. For the record , Ebay sellers and other home shippers are now able to have items picked up at their homes for no extra charge, I do not believe you can even get that from Fedex or UPS. Again thats great for the user but unfair to the Postal workers who are not being compensated for these added benefits provided to the user. If you save a trip to the Post Office you should expect to pay for the convience, I would! The bigger problem is the political mailers that get mailed for free by your elected officials who use the "Franking" privilage. For those who don't know, there was a politician who was in office and took to dropping his mail in the mail box without stamps, when confronted he reasoned that as a "public servant" he was entitled to have his mail delivered at no cost to him. Well that was way back when the Postal Service was still a full fledged Goverment operation, which is not the case nowadays. The practice is still used and you can see it when in lieu of a stamp an elected official signs their name in place of a stamp. Well so much for fairness, as any non incumbent cannot use the privilege, but their 2nd or 3rd class mail is generally treated as first class . Again they get first class service at much lower rates. They will even get extraordinary delivery to the local Post office especiaslly close to election day. Why you ask? well the Post office still needs congress to get rates and raises in place so you won't find too many Postal employees looking to bite the hand that writes the checks.

My postal carrier continually delivers the wrong mail to my house and my mail to the wrong address. I have missed mortgage bills, jury summons alerts, medical info and credit card bills. Thankfully, most of my neighbors bring my misdelivered mail to me and I do the same for them but sometimes those important pieces just never show up. This includes packages. Repeated complaints to the Post Office have brought nothing but repeated assurances that the problem will be taken care of. In 2 years time it has not. They promise to contact me by phone, email or in person yetr I have never been contacted at all. I send everything of value by UPS or FedEx now. The Post Office can go out of business for all I care. They are a junk business dealing in junk mail.
