china has over 5000 history,us only over 200,americans still live in the self enjoyed confidence and admiring ,it is laughable
China's prime minister speaks out in his first interview with a Western publication in years.
china has over 5000 history,us only over 200,americans still live in the self enjoyed confidence and admiring ,it is laughable
i'm very impressed by how many of your people learn english while so little of my people learn chinese.
i am a chinese ,i study english for fighting the english user liars, you westener in my eyes are foolish, you firmly believe you are something, but you do not know when china was civilized ,you americans still barbarian
obviously a smart man, but can he be trusted? the dalai lama heads up a theocratic government and wants to seperate tibet from China? chinese internet is open and free but blocks information about tiananmen square because of 'security reasons'? who's security? the chinese people's or the communist party's?
a smart liar doesn't make a good leader. i don't have an opinion one way or another on this guy yet, but i'm taking this exactly as it is right now: a clever interview, nothing more, nothing less.
You are making your judgement and showing your opinion on 'this guy'.
It is your right to choice whether believe his words or not during this 20-30 mins interview, but you pinned him as a 'liar' in your own opinion.
Back to the questions that you raised.
1. What Dalai Lama wants is NOT ONLY Tibet itself, but several other provinces around Tibet. The Dalai Lama's so-called 'Great Tibet area' is 1/4 of current China's territory. You may go back to CNN's top story video for an illustration map of this area. Dalai Lama does not say he wants independence, but a theocracy that he wants to have definitely has the potential to separate from China. It is just like you are saying you do not want any sweets but you want a lollipop. People have religions is one issue, but it is always harmful to have theocracy. This has been proved in western history. There is an old saying from one of Chinese philosophy books ???Listen to what he said and watch he does???. What Dalai Lama says does not match what he wants behind his speech.
I don???t know whether you have ever heard about the famous 'seven nations' theory. People who hold this theory consider Chinese people will have more democracy and freedom if China separates into 7 nations, including Great Tibet area as a nation. Is that true that Chinese people will have a better life in a separated nation? If that is true, why President Lincoln bothered to have American Civil War? Just leave American un-united as North and South, then that is it. Taking a look at Chinese own history, only when there was a big and united nation, there were peaceful life for ordinary Chinese people. And it relates to your second question.
you've misunderstood what i said. I never 'pinned' wen jiabao as a lier, i merely said that a smart lier doesn't make a good leader and stated that I didn't know whether or not I could trust him. My exact words were 'i don't have an opinion one way or another on this guy yet'. please read what i said before becoming upset.
the attitude towards tiananmen square in china has changed? do all of you even realize what happened in tiananmen square? I have lived in china recently and have found that it is extremely difficult to find any information about it.
if the dalai lama rules wants theocracy, why did he establish a democratically elected parliament in the Tibetan-governemnt-in-exile in India? How was a prime minister elected in a theocracy? why did the dali lama threaten to step down if the protests in March didn't stop? Yes, what the dalai lama calls historical Tibet
includes, qinghai and parts of sichuan, gansu, and yunnan, but this is because many of the people in those areas are ethnically tibetan. yes, let's watch what he does. what has the dalai lama done? please provide evidence.
i've never heard of the 7 nations theory, and i don't know why you think i support it. i do not. and it's useless to compare 1800's America to modern day China. 1800's America was much more united in culture, language, and religion than modern day china is.
Yes, i have listened to what chinese people have to say, like i said, i have lived there. i have the greatest respect for your people, your culture, and I am trying to learn your language, which i must say is very difficult. i'm very impressed by how many of your people learn english while so little of my people learn chinese.
but this does not change my distrust of wen jiabao. as i have said, i do not think that china should become divided. neither am i advocating a complete overthrow of the current government, rather i think a slow stable process is necessary. i just have doubts that wen jiabao will truly bring this process about. i have seen the reports on CCTV of him crying among the rubble in sichuan province, but I have also heard him say things that I do not think are true. maybe he will win my trust in the future, but right now, i don't know if he is truly a good leader or just a very smart liar.
u stupid idiot,u knew nothin' about China, go to learn chinese history before makin' any comments!!!
2. Information about Tiananmen Square is banned because of national security reason, or you may call it communist party's security reason. But in a longer term, it is Chinese people's security. If the result of Tiananmen Square turned out to be an opposite way, China would be separated as what happened to The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). I do not know how much you know about the Russian history, especially after the separation until 2000. From what I read and watched, that period was not peaceful at all. People were using watches, leather clothes, gold to exchange some bread in order to survive. Teenagers were organised and sent to west as young prostitutes. No one wants to spend their life like that. If you are in China, you will find the attitude towards Tiananmen Square has changed over past 2 decades. It moved from sympathy to doubt whether those democratic leaders who successfully flied to American and left all ordinary students on the streets were really working for democracy or just wanted power to rule China. We are in doubt whether these guys can do better job or mess up as Georgia???s leader who started the war on the opening day of Olympic Game. Isn???t it ironic? People used to stop war for games, but nowadays, starting a war together the start of the games.
And is this information really banned from the internet? NO for anyone who knows how to setup a proxy with free proxy lists updated every day. It used to be manual opreation, but now there are several programs for managing it automatically. So for anyone who has the knowledge and seeks answers, s/he still has the way to find out.
Because Dalai Lama can speak English, because western media are telling everyone communism is evil and people in China are either brainwashed or no freedom at all, how many westerns really listen to Chinese people???s voice or have the abilities to read ordinary Chinese people???s words? Thank for today???s technology and hard learning of a second language back to school time, I am here using English to express my thoughts and communicate with others.
So please do not make any judgement if you have not heard the other side of the story. Go to read history books about Tibet history and come to China to ask any ordinary people for his/her thoughts. For sure you will get negative answers, because there are still more improvement for China to make. But do not rule out any positive answers that you will hear.
RandyHiggins: the past is a painful chapter. Why bring it up when there's so much going for China in the future? The past can be discussed by historians ad nausium.
You, sir, need to find a day job.
finally, you alluded to corruption. Well power corrupts, especially to a country that was painfully poor for so long. Everybody wants to get rich however they can.
But the country isn't ready for democracy yet, so it's caught in a limbo.
"You, sir, need to find a day job." This is a mixed metaphor. 'Get a job' is an insult suggesting that a person has little value due to their unemployment. 'Don't quit your day job' is an insult suggesting that a person has no talent for something they are doing as a hobby or part-time job. I do not take offense to this. I rather enjoyed the puzzle of this phrase.
Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it. This aphorism is commonly cited when discussing past trajedies. Are you suggesting that nihilism is the appropriate philosophy of life? What the country is ready for is an end to corruption. Now, everyone is saying, "when there is revolution, grab what you can". When every Chinese person says, "do to other people what you want other people to do to you", there will no longer be corruption in China.
Wen continues to whine about the developing status of China and the need for tolerance of the nation's flaws. The reason there are 800,000 peasant farmers is that the central government has tolerated the theft of almost all the money sent to the provinces. The only reason to lead in China is to steal government money. There is no concept of civil service for the good of the people. It is not a 'miracle' that the national economy has grown for 30 years. Mao beat the productivity of the country to a bloody pulp. There was no production during the Cultural Revolution. Starting from nothing makes the development appear rapid but it merely diverts attention from the atrocities of the past. Wen is not a hero, but he is the best at exploiting his own culture.
Sorry, we're talking about 800 million (800,000,000) peasant farmers
usa does not sell arms to taiwan ,for it will cause war,i admire wen premier, for we love him very much,we do not need you love him also ,for it is impossible
Actually, I do love Wen Jiabo. I can choose to love him, and I do. I cannot trust him, I cannot choose to trust him, because neither he nor his government have shown that they can be trusted. Love comes from my heart, trust must be supported by facts.
Te Chinese are brilliant. China is immune to American aggression as they can collapse the American economy at any time!
While US has 700 army bases around the world to control the world, China is funding the American Empire. America gets weaker every day while China gets stronger.
Thank you for an excellent article.
Wen Jiabo is China's Gandhi. His speeches at home and abroad always stress peace and development;
he gives up his holiday time through the year to visit poor areas; he lives simply; he has a genuine concern for the poor.
My hope is that someone in a position to do so will nominate Wen Jiabo for the Nobel Peace Prize.

why just excerpts, could you publish the full interview scripts
Sigh! People surprise me everyday! If you read closely, you will find a line indicating the full interview scripts are published as well. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TO CLICK THE LINK. P.S. the full interviews script showed very similar content , just slighly longer. Frankly, I don't think he needed much editing at all.
A man of great wisdom:

He just told us what we wanted to hear...
Zakaria once again has proved to be a very versed and intelligent interviewer. His questions were precisely what most global focused people will want to know. China's prime minister likewise has shown a high level of sophistication. He has revealed the wisdom of China's ideology and their understanding of the need of people's freedom. What marvels me mostly is how cordial and respectful the Chinese are towards other nations and their governments. This is in contrast to the smug superiority complex commonly found in American politics. I find this very reassuring to the rest of the world that the other super power deals with them as equals.
Femi Animashaun. Lagos, Nigeria
Agreed. I wish we had such cordial, intelligent leaders in the United States. If the Chinese government could open up and rid itself of corruption it has the potential to become a model government. Unfortunately it has a long way to go before erasing the memory of its brutal suppression of dissent at Tianamen square which still goes on today.
After reading the response by Premier Wen, it reminds me about Palin's interview with Katie Couric.
America needs a leader who can handle interviews like him. I can't imagine what if Palin becomes our VP and needs to deal with these superpower leaders around the world. It makes us look like a retard if she represents us.
h
over china perform better in economical and financial management than USA. they have nearly trillion dollars investment in USA. chinese leaders are more practical too. they spend their energy at home and not interest to tell other people what to do around the world
Whether or not you agree with their politics THIS GUY IS SMART and agile. Makes me envious that our leaders don't offer intellectual responses and insight... Just soundbites and whatever primitive Neanderthal-speak Bush grunts at the camera.
A very good interview. Glad for the opportunity to know more about the Chinese leader.
With less than two months before the election, Republicans and Democrats are driving it home: This is the election of the century.
And they're right: There is a lot at stake this year. This could be the year we change the lives of million Americans by providing them with decent health care and millions more with a living wage. It could be the year that we listen to the many Americans and Iraqis and withdraw occupying forces. It could be the year that we cut the near-trillion dollar defense budget, repeal NAFTA, revoke the Patriot Act and the illegal wiretapping FISA bill, build a green energy infrastructure, discipline runaway corporations and reign in the manic speculation driving the current food and housing crises.
That is Ralph Nader's plan, anyway-to offer Americans what the polls show they want.
So, while John McCain sings about bombing Iran and Barack Obama uses rhetoric about "smart" and "dumb" wars to stay in dumb wars and start new "smart" ones, Nader stands for strongly negotiated peace in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan. While Obama dismisses his earlier commitments to fair trade as "overheated," Nader would replace NAFTA with uniform environmental and labor standards. And while McCain chants "drill, baby, drill," and Obama prepares to replace Big Oil with Big Corn or Big Nukes, Nader calls for a renewable infrastructure.
But the Democrats tell us that we cannot vote for Nader because there is too much at stake this year. After eight years of George W. Bush, the argument goes, we cannot afford another Republican. We must rally behind the change party. And for the most part, students are buying it. Emphatically anybody-but-Bush and unfamiliar with the Democrats' duplicity, these students mistakenly believe that ousting the current administration will exorcise the demons of war, jingoism and economic imperialism they represent.
