I believe that trainings about white privilege could benefit not just George Fox students and faculty, but all of us across the country. If people (Christians, in the case of George Fox) opened their hearts and minds, they'd clearly see the disparities that exist when opportunities accrue -- or don't accrue to people simply because of the color of their skin. Affirmative action, if carried out properly, does not dumb down; it helps level the historically unjust playing field in our country. It speaks to a future where everyone's cultural and religious differences are appreciated. We all benefit from the variety of perspectives and understanding that diversity brings to any table. The achievements of these programs include moving all of us toward a more just society, where there is no achievement gap in K-12 or gross racial disparities in poverty, unemployment, prison populations, etc., and where ignorant people wouldn't ever consider hanging an effigy of anyone from a tree. We all benefit when we lift each other up. I am a 56-year-old white woman.

How is treating everyone exactly the same without any knowledge of their race not a just playing field?

............................How naive can you be not to recognize that there has been Racism going on in America for what is it, 400 years and it is going on in 2008?? If race was not a part of the Presidential Election McCain would have no chance at all of getting even 45% of the votes in the November 4th election. McCain is not at all an impressive candidate and he is following the 8 bad years of the failed Bush Republican Administration.

Sara Palin has been trashed week after week by everyone including SNL. Thats OK! Although I agree this is in bad taste you guys can give it out but cry like babies when it comes your way. I hope and pray our country can live thru this mess but I will assure you most of us will do fine while many of you guys will be lost when the goverment can't pay your bills anymore. While you're whinning and crying we are working and saving for days like may be coming. Lets see who comes out ahead.

When you say "you guys", who are you referring to?

Aside from how disgusting these actions are, it also only fuels the fire that burns in many Americans over the issue of the growth of radical Christians. Obviously not all Christians are racists and a huge number of them will be voting for Obama; but these actions diminish the Christian ideology of being a peaceful religion and highlight it as a religious zealot cult capable of terrorist activity.

  • Posted By: ThePrairiePrankster @ 10/02/2008 2:18:48 PM

Why did they hang Obama in effigy?

Because they are racists, that is what racists do. Threaten those they fear with hangings and cross burnings. The fear of the ignorant racists would be laughable if it weren't so widespread,

I could not notice that one of the contentions is that a school has to LOWER its standards, so minority students can attend! EXCUSE ME!

It's a shame! This country is, and always will be, Racist.

Here are a few comments made by some George Fox University professors, and students trying to "explain away" the ramafications of this act:

"Others say it could be nothing more than a dumb prank by someone who was unaware of all the racial undertones of the act." Excuse me?????
First off, if they were TRULY "unaware of all the racial undertones of the act", then how would they have known to put a NOOSE, around the NECK of the Obama figure,
AND HANG it from a TREE?!!! The mere fact that they used these things, MEANS that they WERE/ARE AWARE! Please.

"There are a lot of students who don't understand the extent to which racism still exists today, they haven't grown up during the time of the civil rights movement,"
    says professor Hulbert.
That's bogus...b/c "they may have not been living during the times of Civil Rights", but they SURE know about the atrocities (Lynchings, etc.) that went on during that time, and how to use such things! And further, they're learning it from somewhere. Where? From their Parents!...b/c some of THEM lived during that time period.

This is all a bunch of BS!!! (pardon me), especially the 3rd (and last) page where it has comments from some people who live in the Portland, Oregon area, in response to stories written by the Oregonian Newspaper (Portland) re: Affirmative Action.

One person said "Affirmative Act lowers standards".
AA doesn't "Lower Standards" in order for minority students to be accepted into colleges. Minority students have to prove themselves, have good grades, have been involved in community service, etc....all the SAME standards as required from Non-minority students! I don't know why people are acting as if minority students benefitting from AA are some kind of losers who don't deserve to go to college. I think there is an underlying assumption which some people have, that all people of color can't and/or don't want to be successful, and use their race/ethnicity as a way to get a leg up. Has anyone here talked about how White women are the primary beneficiaries of Affirmative Action??? (check the data on the U.S. Dept. of Labor). I was shocked when I first learned that. We act as though Affirmative Action is some "Minority Entitlement" Program.

Minorities are not looking for an "Advantage", all they're asking for is an EVEN playing field. And, Affirmative Action provides monority students, AND women (of all races), with just that.

It's time for people to stop pretending, or acting as if we don't have a REAL racial problem in this country!!!

If white people cannot make it in this country, after all they have stolen and after all of whom they have exploited, it is not really my problem and I don't care. White people are always complaining about affirmative action and immigration...why does equal opportunity scare you? Maybe it is because you know that your whole lives have been handed to you and that if you actually have to compete, you might not get the job or scholarship just because you are white. When I hear white people complain about affirmative action, I laugh. You are all so afraid you may not get anything if it isn't stolen and protected for you first. And you know what? I laugh because it is true--without the benefits of racism, you people would still be living in caves. So, sense you hate everything nonwhite so much, please stop traveling to tropical countries, where all the natives hate you anyway. Please stop eating chocolate, wearing diamonds or gold, stop drinking coffee and eating bananas. All of these things come from people you hate, remember? Please, if you love Europe and white people so much, why don't you just go back home, to Europe, to your hailed homeland of whiteness? Please, we are begging you. To all white people: why don't you just go back home?

my mother spent a small fortune sending me to a private christian academy. she wanted to spare me the "horrors" of public education. The students at the private christian academy were the most racist, hateful people you could ever imagine!! you'll find many of those same "christians" safe and segregated in thier churches every sunday, or saturday, morning!! hypocrisy at its best!!

I believe you. As a Canadian who moved to the Carolinas - racism in the biblebelt is alive and well. It really makes me sad.

Obviously it was 4 blacks who did it. Thats why theyre covering up for the rotten black pieces of ***. They knew FULL WELL what the "ramifications" would be;thats what they wre counting on. They KNEW ther would bean anti-white uprising, with a lot of blubbering about how whites just dont understand how much ray-cizzum there is!! And of course salls to "deal" with "racial issues"' wouldgo out. Its NOT a white who thinks blacks get too much--its a(BRAINLESS) black who thinks blacks should get MORE...AND MORE..AND MORE...

You would think that Oregon would be pretty liberal but it is the home to many a right wing militia...Its Pretty pathetic that there are still people out there who blame their problems on someone else's skin color.

What's the big deal? People burn effigys of all kinds of people, all over the world. Besides it's covered under Free Speech. It's a two-way street, you can't have Love without Hate.

Why not identify these students? They are adults. Let the whole world know what kind of people they are.

Probably hung there by a member of the NObama team to stimulate discussion, and perhaps support.

These kids knew what they were doing - they're University students, for God's sake - so I ask, why weren't they expelled for not giving any reason for their actions? I want to know, why did they do it? They should be forced to give SOME reason, ANY reason. Let their peers decide whether or not those reasons are to believed or even accepted, agreed upon, whatever. This cover-up is pure bull. The University has an obligation now to investigate itself and prove to society that it is serious about intellectual freedom and debate. I challenge the University to respect not only the ends of learning, but the PROCESS.

Dan, as a student at George Fox I can assure you that our admins are taking this very seriously. Just this afternoon our classes were cut short for an assembly in which President Baker filled us in the best he could on what has been going on (the text of his message is on the website now if you want to read it). However, the federal privacy act (FERPA) prohibits the University from revealing who the perpetrators were; we may never know why they did it - it's not a cover-up. Among other things, they're going to start having "talkback" sessions for us to discuss issues that are affecting the student body (such as, apparently, racism in this case - I personally think it was more politically motivated) and bring them to the attention of school government.

      • Posted By: marcharino @ 10/01/2008 9:53:05 PM

What? The "Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act?" FERPA is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student's educational record. An effigy of a Black political figure hung from a tree after school hours would hardly qualify as an item that is protected by FERPA-protected act anymore than vandalism would be protected by the First Amendment and free speech. And FERPA allows schools to disclose student's records under certain conditions (i.e. legitimate educational interest, health and safety emergencies, etc.). Believe me, the authorities were already notified of the perpetrators of this indecency--and FERPA did not play a part in the secrecy.
