I believe that trainings about white privilege could benefit not just George Fox students and faculty, but all of us across the country. If people (Christians, in the case of George Fox) opened their hearts and minds, they'd clearly see the disparities that exist when opportunities accrue -- or don't accrue to people simply because of the color of their skin. Affirmative action, if carried out properly, does not dumb down; it helps level the historically unjust playing field in our country. It speaks to a future where everyone's cultural and religious differences are appreciated. We all benefit from the variety of perspectives and understanding that diversity brings to any table. The achievements of these programs include moving all of us toward a more just society, where there is no achievement gap in K-12 or gross racial disparities in poverty, unemployment, prison populations, etc., and where ignorant people wouldn't ever consider hanging an effigy of anyone from a tree. We all benefit when we lift each other up. I am a 56-year-old white woman.
