How to NOT promote a movie in Bismarck, North Dakota:
    1. Do NOT advertise in the news paper
    2. Do NOT put the name of the movie on your outdoor sign
    3. Do NOT display promotional posters in the mall hall way.
    4. Do NOT show the movie playing at the ticket booth
    5. Have only one showing for the grand opening night.
    6. Have the movie share a theater screen with another movie
    7. Have a homemade sign over the theater-screen door entrance.

    The story:

I was aware that ???American Carol??? was supposed to be released nationwide at the beginning of October. On Monday (October 6th) I drove to the Grand Theater (15 screens) to see if the movie was playing there. I went into the Grand theater and looked at the posting of all the movies currently showing, which are displayed above the ticket counter. The ???American Carol??? title was NOT listed. I assumed that it must be then showing at the Carmike 8 Theater (8 screens). I drove to the Carmike theaters, by way of the Sears north parking lot (thereby not driving by the outdoor sign). I entered through the west door. I noticed that there were NOT any posters showing the ???American Carol??? playing. I approached the ticket booth and looked at the list of movies playing, which did NOT show the ???American Carol??? playing. I then asked the person at the ticket counter if they had ???American Carol???. He said they have the movie but he was not sure when they would be playing the movie. He said he could go find out that information, which I asked him to do. He returned and said that they would start showing the movie the next day (October 7th) one time at 7:30. I thanked him and told him I would return to see the movie. When I left the theater, I decided to drive by the outdoor sign to see if it was listed. The movie ???American Carol??? was not listed anywhere on the outdoor sign.

On October 7th I returned to Carmike to watch the movie. On my way to the theater I drove by the outdoor sign to see if the movie was listed. It was still NOT listed. When I entered the theater to see if there were any posters promoting the movie. There were NONE. When I purchased the ticket I looked to see if it was listed above the ticket booth. It was NOT. I was told the movie was being shown on Screen #1. When I went to Screen #1 I was not sure if I was at the correct screen since ???Step Brothers??? was prominently displayed above the door. I then walked to Screens #2,3,& 4, which showed other movies playing. I returned to Screen#1, and then realized that Carmike had made a ???hard-to-read??? sign made out of 3 pieces of taped together paper which said ???American Carol??? in blue ink from what appeared to be an ink-jet printer. I entered the theater at 7:30, and the screen was not showing anything ( no previews or advertising). I was the only one in the theater. I waited for about 5 to 10 minutes before the previews started. During the entire course of the movie, I was the only person in the theater. It was obvious I w

Zucker is entirely correct to compete in the marketplace of ideas. Good luck to him, and let's see how he does.

"Former liberals" like him and Ron Silver showed their true colors after 9/11. They have sided with the excesses of the Bush Administration. The misery of the last eight years is a direct result of George W. Bush, and not the single event of 9/11. Wherever Osama bin Laden is, he must be laughing at us for over-reacting so much and so wrongly.

We cut interest rates repeatedly since 9/11. People bought homes they couldn't afford.

We went into Iraq without finishing Afghanistan, for no good reason. The war in Afghanistan is suffering. Iraq makes us look like fools, and it's draining our soldiers and wealth.

Bush cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans, while increasing spending. Those wealthy few created jobs overseas. Meanwhile, the government went further into debt.

People like Zucker, Silver, and Lieberman need to realize that someday, we all die. You don't shred the Constitution and the country just because you're panicking about your miserable hide. And if you want to stop terrorism, what we've done in the last eight years isn't the way to do it.

I never said America sucks, idiot. Parts of it suck. Like the part where you live. Americans like me are working hard to compensate for the likes of you. We want the Constitution to last through this century and beyond.

I NEVER hear your kind talking about that, though...

"but my conversion came on 9/11. I mean, they're really trying to kill us." what an idiot! So we invaded Iraq because "they" are trying to kill us? Even though Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. This is the stupidity of the Conservative agenda for the last 8 years.

I find your ignorance and lack pf a grasp reality very funny. It sounds like you know very little the the world beyond your prejudices and knee slap Patriotism. I have expierenced personally the distrust many of the people in the world have about post WWII Foreign Policy. In many cases they admire Ameicans, but are deeply suspicious of the motives behind our Multinational corporations and pur use of military force to acquire their resources fraudulently. Grow up, we are seen as bullies and liars more often; than as nation that has the moral and values we try to "give" others. To paraphrase R. That's completely idiotic.... Timothy McVeigh didn't bomb the Fed building in OKC over Christianity. However terrorists attack and murder in the name of Allah, and want to destroy all non-Muslims. What's equally bad is the so-called peaceful Muslims of the world are unwilling to stop it.

And they wonder why we find it difficult to trust them.....

This whloe "Liberal versus Conservative" culture war is the most overblown bunch of political baloney currently being foisted on the American people. Its most ardent practitioners are Rush Limbaugh and his imitators, whoose masterful use of us versus them propaganda and scapegoat politics is as effective as it is darkly destructive to American politics and good government. The idea that one political ideology has all the answers to the tough political problems we face on an ongoing basis ranks up there with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny as feel-good fantasy. Effective political solutions and good government are almost always a result of a combination or composite of so-called "liberal" and "conservative" positions and ideology.

We have been subjected to almost 30 years of right-wing anti-government and anti-tax propaganda starting before the Reagan years. This right-wing fantasy land is where all government and taxes are all bad and we would all be much better off if we just got rid of all the government programs and taxes and let the free market do its thing and America would just live happily ever-after. This view of the world is every bit as naive as the socialist view that every problem can be solved by government. Both world views are fatally flawed, because the answer lies in between, as it always has. Answer yourself this - if one political afiliation had all the answers, if it were that simple, we would have solved most of our political and government problems by now. By falling into this phony liberal versus conservative war, we do ourselves and America a huge disservice. If America cannot climb out of this type of distractive, destructive, impotent politics, we will not sustain ourselves over the long haul.

Excellent post, Dave. It's so sad that everything is painted in terms of black and white, and that so many amerikkans respond to this. That's the main reason that I appreciate the level of deep thought that Obama is willing to put into the issues, rather than the reactionary, phony image-based platform of the opposition.

      • Posted By: Pallisor @ 10/04/2008 4:40:37 PM

Yes. I also liked "the deep level of thought" Clinton put into it after we got our @sses kicked with the USS Cole, our embassies and the first time the WTC was bombed. We'll go ahead and let Obama think his way out of it.

Is it any mystery that Hamas has endorsed Obama?

I guess there are two kinds of patriots, too - the kind that believe patriotism is found in supporting your government, history and people, and the kind that believe patriotism is criticizing the faults of your government, history and people. From what I have seen of this movie, he is bashing Michael Moore for making movies that are critical of American history, people and government. A quote from the movie is, "I love America, that's why I want to destroy it." It is hard for the supportive type to understand the critical type, and really, where does it stop being critical and start being America-bashing? Personally I think Michael Moore is a jerk and a bully, who threatens to sue people who give his movies a bad review. And I do think he crosses that line between critical and America-bashing. So whether I see Zucker's movie or not, I greatly enjoy the fact that Michael Moore is being bashed.

    • Posted By: rogerhall @ 10/02/2008 2:57:16 PM

It is America-bashing if it is untrue. If it is true, then it's critical. My complaint is that the "love it or leave it" group simply refuse to even know about our sins; therefore instead of improving we are destined to repeat them.

It has always amazed me that the "personal responsibility" crowd so often refuses to ever take responsibility for their country's actions.

      • Posted By: stematwork @ 10/02/2008 3:31:37 PM

but when you keep moving the bar further and further left as to what actually constitutes a "sin", you have to expect a backlash.
after 9/11 we saw liberals absolutely SPRINT to figure out what we had done to cause the mess. when you assume that your country is in the wrong from the get go, it makes it tough for me to say "you're just being critical"

        • Posted By: Braes @ 10/02/2008 4:22:26 PM

I'd say at that time, there was 100% solidarity.
Once the GOP began saying to Democratic Veterans such as myself that a vote for a Democrat was a vote for the terrorists, you threw patriotism under the bus for partisanship.

          • Posted By: Pallisor @ 10/04/2008 4:37:16 PM

When did the GOP ever say that? You have a credible source?

    • Posted By: ekaterinanight @ 10/02/2008 3:48:51 PM

You should really go back and read your own country's history. Our founding fathers believed in citizens having the liberty to question their government. We wouldn't even have a country if it weren't for that right (the Boston Tea Party was, afterall, a protest) We live in a democracy, it's our inate right to question whether or not our government is acting in our best interests. That doesn't make us unpatriotic, that makes us Americans. Furthermore what our government is doing to fight terrorism is wrong--we need to stop fighting the terrorists and start fighting why they become terrorists in the first place. It's been said over and over again by leaders who've had to be witness to massive atrocities that could have been prevented. Now I'm not saying that we hold any of the blame here in any way, I'm merely saying that in order to stop terrorists we need to make sure people don't become terrorists in the first place. And that is a fight that can be won.
And I sincerely hope you are not a Palin supporter--she exemplifies the epitome of someone who is anti-American. Her husband was the member of a group that wanted Alaska to secede from the rest of this country. They don't want to be American! If that's not unpatriotic, I don't know what is.

Her post looked fine to me... why so angry? She's right though... they want to kill us all. However the libs did nothing the first time terrorists attacked the WTC, except stand there and take it. It was Bush who finally stood up to them. No wonder Hamas endorses Obama.

  • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 10/02/2008 3:50:18 PM

It is true that there are people out there trying to kill us. The question is targeting the right people. They were not in Iraq before the invasion. They were in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. I have not seen a hardcore convservative yet with cojones to nut up and suggest we invade Saudi Arabia or Pakistan. Kerry took heat for saying the "war" against terror is more suited to police work but it is true. That is how Great Britain has helped twart recent planning. We know we have the capacity to attack, the tricky part is attacking the right target. Michael Moore is not the enemy. Bin Laden is the enemy and I haven't seen any of these so-called chickenhawk patriots go get him.

Michael Moore is avowedly anti-Israel and there is no reason why liberals should be allowed to have their point of view in movies but conservatives views not be permitted. The liberals are more concerned about criticizing Israel and blaming America for 911 while they try and excuse, justify and explain Islamic terrorism that since our 911 has murdered innocent men, women and children in Israel as well as Iraq, England, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, The Phillipines, Fiji, and many other countries.

I am a Democrat and I am voting for Obama but I am tired of the left wing Moore and his supporters blaming Israel and America for all the world???s problems. The rest of the world did nothing when Saddam Hussein was gassing his own people and is doing nothing about Darfur, did nothing about Rwanda, and is doing nothing about Iran getting a nuclear weapon. When Israel went after Hezbollah and had thousands of missiles targeted at its cities the Michael Moore???s of this world criticized Israel. The left wing blames the victims of terror and it???s long past the time when other voices are heard, and yes, there are Democrats like me who are voting for Obama but who are tired of the Israel and America bashing.

Zucker sounds like another out of touch old fart.

It is strange that some dislike Liberals. Were it not for Liberals, you would probably be working 60 to 80 hours a week for subsistence wages, if you could find a job. You would have no Social Security or retirement. You would buy food in a company store to which you would be perpetually indebted. You would live in a tarpaper shack, owned by your employer. Your wife and children would be slaving in sweatshops. Women would be forbidden to vote.

How could you not know that most of what we take for granted in America are products of Liberal thinking? The 40-hour workweek, Minimum Wage Law, Social Security, Child Labor Laws and Women's Suffrage are all Liberal ideas. The American Revolution was a uniquely Liberal undertaking.

If you genuinely do not like those Liberal notions, there are countries were you will not be troubled by them. Try living in Russia, Saudi Arabia or Iran, for a glimpse of what your life would be without Liberals.

People who vote for Republicans are very angry right now. They feel somewhat responsible for our brothers and sisters dying in Iraq, and they should, but that does not mean that because you voted for a warmonger in the last few elections that you have to continue to do so.

    Republicans:
Stop feeling so bad and stop voting for GOP'er just because you keep hearing the word "team" associated with them. This is not Football, your votes can help decide whether our brothers and sisters fight and die for causes that all Americans believe in and support.

Do not let your guilt get in the way of your intelligence!
By the way, where are the centrist Republicans? Why does the GOP have to have a big rubber stamp as a constituency?

I would rather have a "inexperienced" Democrat wasting a 500 billion on helping the poor or disabled or uneducated, than have a neo-con Republican blow 500 billion on killing tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi and thousands of US service men and women.

In the last 8 years or so Republicans have shown me that they will do anything and everything in their power to keep you from retaining an opinion based on the facts that their incompetence is comprised of.

    • Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 10/03/2008 5:33:50 PM

An odd thesis. You will be reminded that over one hundred Republicans voted against the bailout bill and defied President Bush based on reasons other than ideological ''rubberstamping''. Then too,one cannot have it both ways. In the ''where are the true conservatives''? this must be matched with ''where are the true liberals''? It should be stressed that FDRs social programs brought in a galaxy of outstanding consertvative minds and economists of Maynard Keynes school,a man who was not an American to begin with, and who was a conservative.
Both ideologies have departed from their FDR-Kennedy /Eisenhower-Reagan roots. The ''liberal''is more left, the ''conservative''more right. Both are damaging. One desires to lead under unfettered market forces and the always re-interpreted ''family values'',the other, holding an entire nation in thrall to socialized ideologies. Al Gore is no better than a Tom DeLay. Frank Raines is no better than a Jack Abramoff. NOW is no better than the John Birch Society [if there are still any of those around].
It pays to observe that there are honest, intelligent probing minds among the Republican as well as the Democrat. Dem Freshmen such as Tester,Webb,Schyler,McCaskill, and Republicans including Coburn,Wines,DeMint, and Shays are among the only ones in the Legislative that prevent the body from slipping into total decay and irrelevance. Indeed, perhaps more so as ''Red,Yellow and Purple''states are more fluid, electing Republicans and Democrats in turns,no-one staying around long who cannot deliver. The oldguard Helms,Thurmonds,Santorums,DeLays, Watts, Cunninghams, soon Craigs and Stevens,,and other firebrands of the right are long gone.
But those in Blue states, dependably re-elected again and again, are those who are now doing the most damage. Barney Frank,Chuck Schumer [who singlehandedly wrecked INDYMAC], Harry Reid [who caused another bank run yesterday and caused stocks to further plummet based on his comments on ''a major insurance firm headed for bankruptcy'',a truly stupid comment at a time like this], Nancy Pelosi,Maxine Waters,John Conyers,Chuck Rangel [under investigation for corruption], Chris Dodd [who is one of the subjects of a federal grand jurys investigation into COUNTRYWIDE ] are the ones who need to be bounced. Get other liberals in if that is the vox populi, but get rid of this deadwood.

I am sooo glad that debrann knows so much more than the political scientists and regional experts that the US Government employs, some of whom have worked in their areas of expertise for more than 30 years. Thank God debrann knows more than all the CIA analysts who have watched Al Qaeda emerge as a threat. Thank God debrann is here to tell us exactly what President Bush and his advisors were thinking.

Considering how intelligent debrann is, I am absolutely certain that he/she knows that the meaning of the word "is" is VERY ambiguous. Because we all know that Democratic Presidents NEVER, EVER lie about anything. And certainly not about anything that they could be blackmailed over. Hmmmm, maybe that's why President Clinton signed that law allowing American companies to sell our most closely held military secrets to the Chinese, and anyone else who wanted them.

Ooops. No that can't possibly have happened, after it all, IT WAS JUST SEX. And we all know that nobody worries about THAT anymore. In fact, I wonder why President Clinton didn't just have one of his journalist friends document all his affairs in the pages of the New York Times. It certainly couldn't have been because he was afraid somebody would find out.

If he was afraid somebody would find out, then that would have left him open to blackmail. And we all know that was never an issue. We all know that the Clinton impeachment was engineered out of nothing by those nasty, nasty Republicans. Who should all be impeached for stupidly listening to the advice of all those advisors and the CIA, who ALL said that Iraq was well on the road to obtaining WMD, and using them.

I'm certain that debrann would NEVER make the mistake of listening to such advisors, who had been imersed in their areas of expertise for soooo many years. Debrann is way too smart to make such a rookie mistake. And so is Senator Obama.

  • Posted By: debrann @ 10/03/2008 10:00:53 AM

Mr. Zucker, to defeat your enemy you must know who they are and then understand them. We all knew the terrorists were "really trying to kill us." The Bush Administration decided that Iraq and WMD's were behind the terrorists. Maybe if we had found out who hated us so much and why, we could have defeated the true enemy.

  • Posted By: debrann @ 10/03/2008 9:54:57 AM

Mr. Zucker, in order to defeat your enemy you've got to know and understand your enemy. Everyone knew they were "really trying to kill us." The Bush Administration decided the Iraqis and their WMDs were our enemies. We now know that was wrong - maybe if we had found out who really hated us and why, we could have defeated the real enemy.

Comment: Ah. Struck a nerve. Good. I would not have bothered to bring the Federal Election Commission into this if I had not ''checked my facts''beforehand. Then too,the bombing of the US Embassy in Yemen did not originate from Pakistan. It developed from the immediate region, where al Qaeda holds influence. This is what Obama is presently ignoring. Beefing up more forces in Afghanistan, will only stabilize[and even this is no guarantee], the situation there. It will do nothing in Pakistan. It will come no closer in ''getting''bin Laden, and it will not adress Jihad in the rest of the Middle East,Africa,or Europe. Then too,the possibility that NEWSWEAK would ''allow'' such ''idiotic and dangerous accuasations'',may be found here.

You're absolutely right. After I completed undergraduate, then post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral fellowship training I was 34 years old and finally able to achieve an income to make up for the first (relatively) penniless 33 years of my life for my family. I don't remember anyone subsidizing my lifestyle while in medical training. Why is it suddenly my "patriotic" duty to support everyone else to the point where, if Obama has his way, I'll be working 3 out of 5 days a week for the government. Darn right I don't believe in your taxation system that amounts to legalized slavery.

Oh yeah and now you want all those who pay taxes to foot the bill for the WRONG WAR AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME - 3 TRILLION DOLLARS THAT THE NEXT GENERATION WILL HAVE TO PAY OFF.

But, you do like roads, schools, and every other non-market public sector asset. You just want people below you to pay for them. All of that education....

Wow, you folks are clueless! I hold an advanced degree, and was raised by a wealthy sinlge-mother Republican seamstress, and am the granddaughter of a wealthy Republican baker and LPN. It has nothing to do with being or becoming rich--my family's held fast to rational (CONSERVATIVE) values through thick and thin. Have you ever considered that many wealthy people have gotten that way BECAUSE they hold such principles dear? You know: 1. work hard, 2. save more than you spend, 3. be generous with others, 4. "if you don't work, you don't eat, etc. 5. pay your bills on time, don't abuse credit--if you don't have the money, don't buy it! I guess socialism does appeal to the lazy.

Why Newsweek would allow some idiotic and dangerous accusations by people like Lee Holmes without checking the facts is beyond me. Why do bitter people have to connect everything under the sun to one candidate or the other? This is about a movie making fun of a fat guy, so what? Laugh with it or don't watch it.
However, Zucker's closing remark beggs the question: Are "they" only trying to kill conservatives? He had to switch parties to realize that the terrorists are trying to kill All westerners? I'm sure he's safer now that he's a republican since the terrorists ask you about your affiliation before they blow you up....

Ah.

      The First Amendment.

      Read it sometime......

Actually it is good that they can fling it in here. Speech is a great safety valve. Lots of ideas...

The only thing that actually changed on "9/11" was that certain spines failed upon testing. The world has been ever thus. Just because you weren't paying attention before doesn't mean it is more dangerous now (just because you are finally aware of it).

Bravo! Just because Bush's head was in the sand when he started reading My Pet Goat doesn't mean there was any less danger than after he wet himself and continued reading My Pet Goat. Likewise, we are in no more danger now. I can't say Bush deserves no credit that we have suffered no more 9/11 attacks but only minimal credit considering it has been less than 8 years and it was about 8 years between the bombing of the twin towers and 9/11. It may be that Al Qaeda has decided it is not the time to strike again.

The AP Sept.18,2008:''US Embassy In Yemen Bombed''

      • Posted By: edsmithmidwest @ 10/02/2008 4:20:28 PM

Bush's head was not in the sand. 9/11 was the failing of the previous 8 years, glorious let's redefine the meaning of the word "is" Clinton years. Failure of Clinton intelligence and failure of Clinton action to access and deal with the Bin Laden threat. That said it was also the failure of Reagan post-Afganistan defeat of the Soviets to create a stable political system in Afganistan as well. So, there is plenty of blame to go around. Bush just played the hand he was dealt. And sometimes, playing the had you are dealt, means doing something the simple and uninformed do not understand. In 30 years, we will praise him for the invasion of Iraq. Just like we praise FDR for getting this country to sacrifice for the security of Europe. Pretty nice to have a stable Western Europe isn't it?

        • Posted By: Braes @ 10/02/2008 4:46:07 PM

Europe was also a few hundred years past it's Protestant/Catholic wars (excepting N Ireland) There was a common aversion from Russia to Canada toward another World War.
The sects in Islam still consider it a duty to murder each other, with zeal.
In 30 years, we will still be the traffic cop for a bunch of people whose significance wouldn't rise above that anywhere else, excepting for that Oil.
Oil is why we are in Iraq, the "freedom-agenda" that I can admit is attractive is not in play. There is almost millenial emnity between Shia and Sunni, Iran and likely Saudi Arabia are chasing bomb programs aimed at each other, not Israel, and we might think this is Truman II?
Hardly, and the comparison to NATO and the Marshall Plan, the rise of Europe from the ashes into modern industrial societies, is just wrong.
In 100 years, Bush may surpass Buchannan as our absolute worst President. He took us from a nation united against a known enemy to a world paraiah. He told us that Osama wasn't important anymore before he ran us off into Iraq, (Me supporting this, as a mushroom cloud is not an acceptable option...) and now the General in Afghanistan is begging for troops.
As for Iraq, if we leave it will eventually balkanize. The Turks will eventually move against the Kurds in the North. Iran will swallow the Shia, and move against the Sunni's. All we have done here is plow the fields of Armageddon. (We have also decapitated a regime hostile to our friends, at staggering cost.)
