The problem with MSM like Clift is that they don't understand the regular guy or gal's view of elitism. It has less to do with money and education and a lot to do with attitude. It has been the theme of the entire Obama campaign and his followers. The underlying message is if people dont' vote for him it is because they are stupid, unelightened rubes. His mother collecting food stamps while working on a gradate degree in anthropology is the epitome of arrogance and elitism. The message "I'm so smart society should support me and my child, let the dumb folks work at WalMart". MSM view Palin's achievements as dumb luck whafted along by stupid voters. They see Obama's success as brilliant polltical strategy and intellectual insight. The problem with MSM liberals like Clift is they believe intelligence and intellectualism are the same thing. They are not. Intelligence is achieving your goals through grit and skill, intellectualism is advancing your agenda by demeaning others. That's why we rednecks "cling to our guns and religion" instead of voting our pocketbooks. Because despite our stupidity, we know when someone is looking down their noses at us. And btw, I'm one of those religious gun clingers who happens to have two bachelor degrees, two master degrees and a Ph.D., all at the top of my class.

      You seem a little bitter!

See this is the problem everyday Americans like myself have with the media. You are biased and make no apologies about it. The people I know are tired of it. Thank God for the various information we can get these days otherwise Obama might be getting away with his ACORN ties, Freddie/Fannie ties, and his cast of radical characters he liked to hang out with in Chicago. YOu in the media should hang your heads in shame.

Your worried abouth people Obama have associated with but do not say one word about the corrupt admistration that has been in office for the last 8 years. Are you deaf and blind? Take off your rose colored glasses. We need, I repeat NEED a democrat in the Whitehouse to clean up this mess!

    • Posted By: Democrat-Hillary @ 10/04/2008 11:31:11 AM

FYI republican administration have been there for 8 years, congress/senate for 6 and 8 before that, democrats only 2 years (when all of this was already done) and democrats are at fault?
The bus stop at the presidency and this happened under his watch, be more responsible of who you helped to put in power and created this mess, Bush selected Paulson and the rest.... Please!!
To avoid making the same mistake, look who you are voting again!

Ms. Cliff, you do yourself a disservice by mentioning Kathleen Parker in your piece. Ms. Parker debased herself as a national commentator, not because she called for Ms. Palin to stand down, but because she did so in sophomoric fashion, and even there, marginally so. Telling the world that one believes that a national candidate should stand down, demands sobriety and cogency. In the face of history???s judgment, a serious writer must be convinced that her facts and evidence would ineluctably lead any reader to the certainty of her conclusion.

Instead, Ms. Parker reduced herself to the level of a amateur blogger such as myself, choosing to publish her historical proclamation as if scratching onto a public toilet wall; e.g. ???If B.S. were currency, Ms. Palin could bail out Wall Street???; or in regards to Gov. Palin???s meetings with foreign leaders: ???Men swooned...Perhaps Osama Bin Laden is dying to meet her.???

One need not agree with Gov. Palin, to respect her achievements. One might even argue, objectively, that she has not yet so mastered her political craft that she is deserving of national office. But her a national female writer to suggest that Gov. Palin is full of BS, and to intimate that she achieved office because she???s attractive and wiggled her hind-quarters is reprehensible. And as befitting these catty iananities, they were flushed down the very toilet from whence they originally surfaced.

I surely regret if Ms. Parker received ???hate mail???. However, notwithstanding her new found ???liberal admirers???, she must now how ALL perceive her as a writer: a charade; vacuous opportunist and cheap shot artist. Thanks for the forum. Vin@www.wegotsarah.com

Ms. Clift, I think you have the ignition dynamics all wrong here. It was Obama who started the class warfare you call a "culture war," with his surreptitious and degrading comments about those of us who he believes cling to guns and religion out of frustration. It's more than the GOP is EXPOSING Obama as an elitist, not "targeting" him as such. It's my opinion that Obama himself ignited a New Racism in this country when he threw his "typical white" grandmother under the bus in his Philadelphia "Race Speech" -- during which he used the (non-unifying) terms "White" and or "Black" over sixty (60) times. Obama's words and actions are ultimately antithetical to MLK's Dream that one day his children "would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." I disagree that Palin is re-igniting a culture war. She just pushing back in the war that Obama started. What you call an "Everywoman act" is perceived out here in the heartland of America as Authenticity Personified. Palin is a breath of fresh air and a welcome "change" already, at least for people like me -- 9/11 Republicans who were first offended, and then scorned, by the new far-Left Democrat party. I remain convinced, however, that if voters remain true to the principles of the dream of Martin Luther King Jr., they will honor his memory by voting for the content of the character of the McCain-Palin ticket -- and not for the color of Obama's skin or his racial bitterness. At least that is my great "hope."

    • Posted By: Keepinguponfacts123 @ 10/04/2008 1:32:29 PM

The only racial bitterness I see is from the right-wing repulicans. That's what McCain's whole campaign has been about, turning things that reflect bad on themselves to someone else. There are alot of people that are just tired of the Rovian/Schmidt crap. We, the people, can defeat them come November 4, 2008 when Barack Obama becomes the next president of the United States of America.

Do we really want a president who winks? Is it significant that men hooked up to those little dialers tested significantly more appoving of Palin's little winky-poos and fetching little nose wrinkles? Could there be some "small head thinking" go on out there?

I am amazed that "grown ups" are honestly thinking about putting our country in the hands of Sarah Palin. I'm waiting for the punch line, but as we near the election, I fear that the Republicans are serious. Be afraid, very afraid!

Presidential? Since when has the race for the White House descended into a minor beauty pageant, where the superficial charm and crowd-pleasing antics of a minor runner up became the qualifications for President of the United States.

What did we learn on Thursday? Palin is good at memorizing a script, but when asked a question she doesn't have notes before her on the podium to crib from....she just doesn't answer, chosing instead to go back to her notes on "how to answer the energy question"....wink, wink, false smile...let's do another doggone or gee whiz to show the base I'm a real Joe-sixpack.

Only, her tax returns my have also shown us not only has he an ethics inquiry coming up, in true Republican style,m she's also a tax avoider. Where, please, are the other 8 years of her taxes? How come with 5 kids and the salary she and Todd claim, they've already built up $1 - $2,000,000 of investments. Something's fishy.
So is Todd's "racing business" hobby, where he managed to claim a big tax write-off. Joe-sixpack?
Na..more like Sarah-rip off the taxpayers of Alaska!!

Compared to George Bush, our darling Sarah is a genius.

I have difficulties wrapping my mind around this concept of America twice electing George Bush, who went on to devastate our America and our world, yet people are proclaiming Sarah not ready for the White House. Strikes me Sarah runs intellectual circles around this pointy head of George Bush.

Some will contend comparing Sarah to George is to compare her to the worst of the worst which will, inherently, make Sarah look good. Not so. Sarah has an acceptable grasp on issues, domestic and international, Sarah is a proven quick learner and, most important, Sarah is an average American and she certainly knows how to connect with mainstream America.

Sarah represents a fresh face and fresh ideas. She certainly represents change.

Strikes me America is faced with a choice between old political ways of Washington, the Democratic ticket, or something fresh and new, the Republican ticket. We know the results of the old school Washington ways; both Democrats and Republicans are responsible for those results.

I am a registered Democrat, a Hillary supporter. I am voting for John and Sarah because I believe those two offer our greatest chance at a change of direction for our country. McCain is not so much an icon of change but he is certainly different than all other politicians. Sarah, unafraid to announce her disagreements with John, certainly is an icon of change, a fearless icon of change.

I am actually voting Sarah. I want Sarah to be in a position to exert her efforts at fighting for Hockey Moms and Joe Six Pack. Sarah will work at bringing Washington down out of its high White Ivory Tower, back down to earth. Sarah is us, Sarah works for us, and we need bring back "us" to USA.

Someone said that Obama in not qualified to be president? Hilarious! I think that he's more qualified than McCain and definitely more qualified than Palin. Everyone, compare McCain's record with Obama's.

McCain's student record (894 out of 899 in the Naval Academy and who actually got in the Academy using his dad's and grand-daddy's CONNECTIONS since they were both admirals). Oh, by the way, how come McCain got to fly (and recklessly crash) 5 planes if he finished at the bottom of his class? Answer: daddy and gran-daddy connections! After coming back from war, he CHEATED his first wife (since she didn't look all the good after a terrible accident) and married a millionaire who paid for his expenses to get in the Senate. Besides being a POW, which DOES NOT automatically qualify you to be president, he is empty. How many POWs do we have here in the US? Hundreds! That's a HUGE FALLACY, and has no logic. He has no relevant INTELLECTUAL accomplishments! Nothing.

Obama, who wasn't born with a silver spoon like McCain and studied his tail off, is a graduate of Columbia University, has a law degree from Harvard, Editor of the Harvard Law Review, 12 years in politics, four years on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and manager of one of the most impressively flawless and forward thinking presidential campaigns ever.

Obama is far, far more qualified and smart than McCain AND Palin combined! Obama has knowledge, judgment, and yes, some experience in politics as he has proven during the campaign and the debate. In case needed, we have Joe Biden who can provide his huge experience. McCain on the other hand has Sarah Palin who can memorize lines and repeat them like a parrot and... a great smile! Can we trust her? Not a minute!

Yes, we it comes to this election Obama and Biden ARE THE BEST TICKET, BY FAR. Period.

Enough with the Culture wars BS... that's so 2004. John McCain is desperate because he sees his last chance at the presidency slipping through his fingers one voter at a time. He's hitting the panic button. In the next 4 weeks John McCain will say ANYTHING in order to win. No attack will be too misleading, no insinuation too crass. Now he's doubling down on class warfare... Excuse me but when did it become a bad thing to try and get the best education you could? Are there really parents out there that if given the chance would deny their kids the chance to go to the best schools? "Sorry Billy... you can't go to Yale with a full ride scholarship... you'll become an elitist." John McCain calling people who work hard to get an education elitist is nothing less than an attack on the American Dream. He's basically telling kids not to get too educated.. Improve yourself but not too much! McCain who through his wife is worth billions is telling people to know their place while at the same time nudging them with his elbow and laughing at the elite like he isn't one of them. Yeah, I'm sure McCain eats Mac and Cheese every other night and has never let that communist arugula pass his lips.

Face it, McCain will lose for exactly the same reason Kerry lost in 2004. His campaign will all be about why you vote against the other guy. Typical McCain speech coming up: 3 minutes of his ideas, 2 minutes of POW stories, 35 minutes of Obama Bashing. He will recycle the same attacks Hillary used and he will get exactly the same result.

As for Palin, she did herself no favors with independants at the debate. Maybe her base laps up the home-spun Palin-Bot talking points machine, but no one who wasn't already planning to vote republican was swayed. To me, the key was when Biden made the emotional point about understanding how tough it is for families and related it to when his Wife and daughter were killed and sons in serous condition. Palin's response was a cheery litany of memorized talking points. People who say Palin won simply for showing up and not crumbling into a pile of ash on stage are the new sexists. She was awful. Do you want your next VP meeting foreign leaders or negotiating with congress and saying "darn tootin!"

Absolutely! It's horrifying how easily Americans can be distracted from painful truths by a wink and a grin. No wonder Rove and Gingrich et al are chortling at having "The Babe" on their side of the ticket. Hillary Clinton would've been run out of town had she tried to pull off this routine, yet sprinkle a little pageant magic and the "compassionate conservatives" are falling all over themselves with glee. What a nauseating display of national ignorance.

Sorry but Palin WAS NOT PRESIDENTIAL at all!!!!! She was appealing to man for sure, but this is not what you want for a VP candidate or potential President, For God Sake!!!! She was not even professional, if any woman behave this way in a job interview (unless is for an adult bar position) don t think it would fly.....
She is not Hillary, far from it..... Class is something you have or don t have, not to learn in a crash course......

"reven if when you listen to what she says, it's mostly gibberish when it comes to actual plans and policies" I have watched you for years on various "Washington wonk" shows....and if someone knows "jibberish" it's you, Ms Clift! If Palin is so lucky to get into the white house you will see more advancement of women's rights around the world then you and Gloria, Barbara, Joy, Whoppi and the rest of your Washington girlfriends have ever wished... You and your "peeps" are full of hot air. Let's get someone in politics that can make a difference!

Palin brought out Bidens inner socialist for all to see! How she did it don't matter! Biden is no cultural oddity in the DNC and none of them can carry on a talk very long without jumping to the DNCs AMERICANS SUCK campaign.
Biden is the archetect of at least one of that campaign's sevral coded discrimination campaigns against Americans and even so he rehersed and rehersed to stay on script!
The Obama/Biden ticket is a hard left/liberal/socialist ticket . Cultural war is what they seek! Thety should not complaign if cultural war is what they get!
    America is a great country!

CHEEKY? Who do you think youare Eleanor Clift? Sarah Palin is the GOVERNOR of a state, which is pretty exclusive club (more so than being a US Senator) and she is the nominee for the VP of the United States. How incredibly insulting could you possibly be. You are exactly what every dislikes about democrats, hypocritical to your bone...you would NEVER EVER have said that about a male governor, ever.

I used to be a Democrat until the party and press displayed its true visciousness in the attacks on Sarah Palin. CHEEKY? I can't believe you said that.

You are an insult to women everywhere and I will purposely avoid watching any program you are on. You have gotten more and more insufferably superior in recent years but this absolutely takes the cake.

You should apologize immediately to GOVERNOR Palin.

      Oops.... must add:
Do you mean the woman who left the meth labs grow wild during her administration, Wasilla becoming Alaska???s meth lab capital and is she the reformer that is going to shake up WA, Wall street and the world but could not control this meth lab problem?
Do you mean the woman that said during her interview that Alaska "produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy." ?. When in fact is 2.4%......
Do you mean the women that revisited her words about the Iraq war and God? When it was politically correct for her to para-phrase...although it is recorded and filmed, yet they are changing the intention now....
Do you mean the woman that said in the convention speech: They're the ones whose names appear on laws and landmark reforms (McCain), not just on buttons and banners, or on self-designed presidential seals." (Obama)? When in fact Obama in 4 years have authored more major laws than McCain in 22 years. Actually McCain only authored fewer than 6 laws (most did not pass) and only one have his name.....

If this is a sample of what awaits us, God have mercy!!!!!

This is pathetic. If she is elected, it will be because pundits and journalists failed the American people by failing to reject this unqualified idiot because she has pretty eyes.

I am puzzled why it would be considered a gaffe that Joe Biden linked patriotism and taxes. If it???s patriotic for our soldiers to give their lives in a war, why is it any less patriotic to give our material riches to pay for it? To win a war, any kind of war, all of us need to sacrifice and pull together toward a common goal. That is the real ???Country First??? and the real white flag is to support a war, but refuse to pay for it.
