Palin, McCain and the Weeks Ahead

Palin's ties to 'everyday Americans' aren't an argument for her candidacy. But let's treat her ability to inspire the public for what it is: an asset, not a liability.

Comment: How to bring down a democracy: the steps toward totalitarian rule, in the order followed by Hitler and the Nazi Party SEE IF THEY SOUND FAMILIAR.

    1. Improvise an attack (or take advantage of an attack) on the country
    2. Declare the country under attack by an enemy; real or improvised
    3. Force legislation that limits civil liberties and gathers broad powers unto government
    4. Brand dissenters and peacemakers as unpatriotic and browbeat them into submission
    5. Keep the fear factor high to make the public easier to manage
    6. Institute massive propaganda campaigns using state-controlled no-longer-free media and fear of government retribution
    7. Law enforcement and government personnel are used to spy on, control and break dissent 7. Institute the equivalent of a national homeland security department, overseen by one person with unlimited powers
    8. Confiscate all firearms from the citizenry
    9. Institute the mass murder and imprisonment of any who resist the new ideology.
    10. Launch pre-emptive strikes into other countries in an attempt to spread the new ideology

Sound familiar? It should, its not only the direct path of Hitlers rise to power, but also parallels the events starting with and following 9/11. President Bush was very familiar with the game plan, as his Grandfather and his Grandfathers father-in-law were supporters of Hitler and Nazism, both before and after the war.

Of course, theyve skipped a couple of the items on the list, but theyll get to them if theyre allowed to remain in power, because it will be the only way for them to retain power.

The Reichstag Fire: the funeral pyre of German democracy parallels 9/11 and the loss of American civil liberties

Comment: The GOP's biggest fear is not that Obama is a black radical muslim socialist, but that he will in fact be a great President. That would mean the next Republican President to feel the sunshine on his face in the Rose Garden would be a LONG LONG way off!

So, they bring up all the same old crap out of the basement, without even bothering to check out the truth. Here are the answers to all the Obama smears using various trusted non-partisan sources. Investigate for yourselves before believing anyones version of the facts.

Comment: No matter how many times I have seen McCain talking and explaining things, my impression on him remains the same. Just like Palin- they have the same feather...using each other to get to the top, they have a hidden agenda. When it comes to money they couldn't be trusted nor they could to the welfare of the people
around the world. They LACK SINCERITY in their words and so I could not imagine the world with them as leaders...they shouldn't be.

Comment: Karl Rove, a Republican flack and the inventor of Bush Jr's presidential career-- what would you expect him to say about Palin? 4 out of 5 of our last presidents have been ex-governors, and, depending on your political allegiances, you have to admit the results have been, to put it charitably, mixed. Carter was the only one to seriously address the ballooning deficit and the energy crisis, but Congress and the public wanted to party. I think it very much DOES matter than a prospective veep knows who the German Chancellor is. As for Biden being wrong by voting against Reagan, that's what the opposition party does: put the brakes on the absolutism of the White House. I'm not a huge Biden fan. I find him a bit of a bloviator. But be fair, Mr. Rove: isn't his choice as veep the same gravitas strategy the Bush camp used when choosing Cheney, balancing youthful energy with an elder statesman? For progressives and environmentalists, among others, his opposition to Reagan, a pro-business blame-the-poor hawk was a good thing. Reagan's decision to bankrupt the Soviet Union by outspending it reveals he was no fiscal conservative. He never reduced spending, only somehat slowed the rate of its growth, and he grew the deficit. Palin is eerily reminiscent of Reagan: in her anti-government rhetoric while she's running an overweight welfare state, and in her goofy ""faith-based" social views on gay rights, reproductive rights, Endangered Species Act, bogus preemptive wars etc. Does she even believe in evolution? Bush Jr. didn't. She seems closer to William Jennings Bryan than to a 21st century leader. I get a weird Manifest Destiny vibe from her. Who says that Alaska BELONGS to the white man anyway? The czar sold America something that didn't belong to him in the first place. The Inuit were certainly not consulted. And as for the working-mom paradigm she parades, the Christian Right whom she represents fought against women in the workplace all the way. She is a beneficiary of the feminists' hard work, but she hews to views antithetical to that struggle, a hypocrisy as blatant and as unexplained as her Bridge to Nowhere gaffe.

Comment: PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE TO BE HELD SUNDAY AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

The Free and Equal Elections Coalition (FREE) and the Columbia Political Union are pleased to announce that a Presidential debate will be held this coming Sunday, October 19th, 2008, on the campus of Columbia University.

ALL SIX of the Presidential candidates who appear on enough state ballots to acquire the 270 Electoral Votes needed to become President are invited. They are as follows (listed in alphabetical order by affiliation):

    Constitution Party Candidate: Chuck Baldwin
    Democratic Party Candidate: Barack Obama
    Green Party Candidate: Cynthia McKinney
    Independent Candidate: Ralph Nader
    Libertarian Party Candidate: Bob Barr
    Republican Party Can John McCain

The Columbia Political Union will present the debate from 8:00pm to 10:00pm in the Altschul Auditorium, located at 417 International Affairs Building. The debate will be moderated by Pacifica Radio's Amy Goodman, the host of "Democracy Now!". CSPAN will cover the debate, and live radio broadcasts are expected.

"The Columbia Political Union is committed to energizing political discourse on Columbia's campus," said Allon Brann, Columbia Political Union Publisher. "As a non-partisan organization, we work to provide students with opportunities to encounter and engage with political ideas across a wide ideological spectrum, and on a wide range of issues."

"It is with these goals in mind that we have organized this Presidential Debate: to give all candidates-- either within or outside of the political "mainstream"-- the opportunity to speak directly to students about their goals on the issues they deem critical for this country."

"We have invited all eligible candidates, and it is our sincere hope that all will participate, to ensure the substance and rigor of the dialogue which we believe is crucial at this time."

Certified letters officially inviting each candidate have been sent to the respective campaigns.

The Free and Equal Elections Coalition and the Columbia Political Union await the response from the candidates. All candidates' supporters are encouraged to contact the Presidential campaigns and urge them to attend.

The Columbia Political Union seeks to enhance involvement in the political process, domestic and international, and draw every member of the campus community into an ongoing discussion of political ideas.

Comment: If John McCain And Sarah Palin keep this campaign style going, Barack Obama and Joe Biden are a shoe in for the White House. Their is no substance to their campaign. I'm sure everybody knows this. I don't understand why some of the McCain surrogates don't get this. With 17 days left until election day, I would say if the McCain campaign keeps this kind of rhetoric going in their campaign, The American people are going to be turned off in a very big way. I believe even his own supporters will either switch their vote, Or just stay home on election day. I believe a desperate man has desperate ways. The RNC and the GOP are prepared to say and do anything to maintain the White House, Even to say that Barack Obama is a terrorist or has ties to a terrorist. If anyone believes this your out of your mind. It won't resonate with the people, Look at polls, They speak for themselves.

Comment: Ability to inspire the public equates to leadership? Only if you plan to be a)an actress or b)a writer. I think Americans are inspired by their own thoughts already. A leader is expected to be informed and capable of handling any set of challenges. It takes far far more than someone believing you are a 'good person', being able to use your mouth as a form of sheer 'inspiration in others' and being 'popular' with a few. IMHO, she needs a fan club, not *more* responsibilities....in Washington.

Comment: Obama's view of the future of America - Socialism which is the next step to Communism!!

Under socialism a ruling class of intellectuals, bureaucrats and social planners decide what people want or what is good for society and then use the coercive power of the State to regulate, tax, and redistribute the wealth of those who work for a living. In other words, socialism is a form of legalized theft.

The morality of socialism can be summed-up in two words: envy and self-sacrifice. Envy is the desire to not only possess another's wealth but also the desire to see another's wealth lowered to the level of one's own. Socialism's teaching on self-sacrifice was nicely summarized by two of its greatest defenders, Hermann Goering and Bennito Mussolini. The highest principle of Nazism (National Socialism), said Goering, is: "Common good comes before private good." Fascism, said
Mussolini, is "a life in which the individual, through the sacrifice of his own private interests??realizes that completely spiritual existence in which his value as a man lies."

Socialism is the social system which institutionalizes envy and self-sacrifice: It is the social system which uses compulsion and the organized violence of the State to expropriate wealth from the producer class for its redistribution to the parasitical class.

Despite the intellectuals' psychotic hatred of capitalism, it is the only moral and just social system.

Capitalism is the only moral system because it requires human beings to deal with one another as traders--that is, as free moral agents trading and selling goods and services on the basis of mutual consent.

Capitalism is the only just system because the sole criterion that determines the value of thing exchanged is the free, voluntary, universal judgement of the consumer. Coercion and fraud are anathema to the free-market system.

It is both moral and just because the degree to which man rises or falls in society is determined by the degree to which he uses his mind. Capitalism is the only social system that rewards merit, ability and achievement, regardless of one's birth or station in life.

    Yes, there are winners and losers in capitalism. The winners are those who are honest, industrious, thoughtful, prudent, frugal, responsible, disciplined, and efficient. The losers are those who are shiftless, lazy, imprudent, extravagant, negligent, impractical, and inefficient. [What about the role of luckbeing in the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time? R. R. Pope}

Capitalism is the only social system that rewards virtue and punishes vice. This applies to both the business executive and the carpenter, the lawyer and the factory worker.

McCain and Palin has two big weapons that they must use:

. They must reassure the American people that once THEY get the economy back on track that they will seek out the culprits behind the economic downfall. They don't need to try to identify anyone yet. That could be disasterous.

. They need to continue to alert the American people of Obama's radical background and his real goals for this country. He wants the government to control everything and the American people to be his sheep. He wants to bring America down to the level of rest of the world. He is a self-centered elistist that loves attention and wants people, especially the young, to worship him! He will begin in elementary schools and train young people to follow his ideas and ideals.

Comment: OK, I'll accept that she's probably a hoot to shoot moose or watch a hockey game with, but the mercurial rise of Sarah Palin has gone from the comical to the surreal. I refer in particular to her indefensible defense that she could not have been unethical in Troopergate because she didn't benefit financially. Does she really believe unethical conduct is so limited? Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) (cited explicitly in the Troopergate Report) prohibits any effort to obtain " a personal or financial" benefit through official action. Can the woman read? Does she not understand the meaning of the word "or"?
Forget the legalities, let's use an analogy any Chicagoan, and presumably any Alaskan, can recognize. Would you call a judge ???ethical??? who was not bribed, but nevertheless did a favor for a lawyer friend by letting the lawyer???s guilty client go free? Of course not, you would call him or her guilty of a gross and unethical abuse of official power. But Ms. Palin apparently knows even less about ethics than she does about the Bush Doctrine. The honorable John McCain should be ashamed.

    Comment: Despicable

That's the only way I can Sarah Palin's campain that some Americans are more "American" than others
Sarah Palin starts out by attacking Obama's "funny" middle name. Then she goes on to equate Hussein to Muslim to terrorist..

Understandably, as a native of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin does not know much about the rest of the world. Therefore, she does not understand that Hussein is a neither a strange nor a funny name.. In fact, if you used Google and traced the origin of that name, you'd know that Hussein means both good and handsome. It's no small wonder that Hussein is one of the most popular names in the world. Who wouldn't want to be named Hussein?

In fact, Hussein was the surname of one of my students a wonderful, diligent, graceful young lady. Her father, Mr. Hussein, was a concerned, loving, supportive parent who often checked in with me to find out his daughter was doing in my class. As a public employee, I do not know anything about Mr. Hussein's religious beliefs. However, if I were apply the precepts of the Book of James in the Bible, which measures faith by works, I have to say Mr. Hussein's religious beliefs (or lack thereof) were far more worthy of God that the superstitious nonsense spewed from the pulpit of the Wasilla Assembly of God that produced an ignorant bigot like Sarah Palin.

Beyond maligning people's names, Palin and McCain are attacking the loyalty and patriotism of millions of American Muslims, some of whom are serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. The anti-Islamic fervor of Palin's campaign reminds me of the anti-Semitism of Central Europe in the 1930's. And increasingly, a McCain rally reminds me of a cross-burning lynch mob of Ku Klux Klan, and probably attracts its share of Klansmen as well. No one is safe. From attacking Muslims, it will be easy to attack Latinos, African-Americans, Jews, gays... any one who is not "an American like the rest of us."

McCain and Palin are anti-American. They are assaulting the very principles and ideals that this country represents. They are a disgrace to America. Every member of the Republican party, as well as their apologists in the media, should hang their heads in shame.

It behooves every patriotic American to denounce the fear, ignorance, and bigotry that the GOP is using to win votes. McCain and his Republican allies offer us fear and hate. Obama and his Democratic allies offer us courage and hope. Let's vote for hope.

It takes too much energy to "fight"; especially when the "fight" is about "I'm better than you becasue I'm white". May you and Satan enjoy each other's company.

Comment: The negative, hateful words being spoken by Palin against Obama must bring joy to the heart of Karl Rove - the king of negative politics. I believe the hateful words Palin is using to inspire the crowd's is very dangerous. I suppose since Palin cannot speak intelligently about the issues facing "joe six-pack" Americans, exaggerating and lying about Obama is all she can do. This is an important election. We are facing real issues as individuals - loss of our retirement, home, etc. - and as a nation. Can we please talk about the issues. Why can't Palin or McCain INSPIRE talking about the issues?

I always respected John McCain and thought I would have a hard time deciding between McCain or Obama. But, first with the Palin selection, and now with the horrendous negative campaigning, my decision is a no-brainer. I will vote for Obama-Biden in November.

    Comment: Mr. Rove,
Bush had the good sense to steer clear of Senator McCain for the sake of the Republican party. McCain's ties to you and W are far more damning than anything you'll thow Barack Obama's way.

Shall we examine YOUR strategy? Repeat the EXPERIENCE falacy at every opportunity and make McCain sound like a parrot who begins most of his sentences with 'Barack Obama doesn't understand' Pretend that a MAVERICK president is actually a good thing. Pay big money (and small bloggers) for media placement of the mistaken Obama-Osama connection that cost Alan Keyes any hope of winning the Illinois senate race. Tell McCain to use the word pork-barrel repeatedly, because you regard the middle class as expendible livestock. Always accuse your opponent of your greatest weakness. Take your pick: partisanship, energy, the economy, failure in Iraq, out of control spending. Send McCain to Washington, grandstanding as a Maverick legislator. Advise your cronies to short American stocks in sync with the delayed passage of the Banking bailout bill (a move that continues to backfire for you.) ...And finally, select a singularly unqualified but somewhat likeable running mate for McCain, and make her drop out of the race at the end of October to make room for your REAL V.P. choice.

Honestly...with Bush's approval rating being what it is, are you really wanting to compare a candidate siding with Bush vs. one siding with Democrats? You may want to avoid pointing out the 90% connection to Bush's policies McCain has in any argument you're trying to make in his favor, as it's an extremely unfavorable connection.

Also, I love your use of Sen. Obama's middle name only. Very classy.

That's what I thought it was. Guess I was wrong. What is it really? And did you get this testy when people said "William JEFFERSON Clinton" or Hillary "RODHAM" Clinton, or Richard MILHOUSE Nixon or George "W" ? Did that irritate you as well?

I am not convinced. McCain would do better to attack Obama's position on issues rather than Obama's character, judgment, and values. Oh wait. By arguing that this is the best strategy for McCain to win shows just how desperate the situation must be for you, McCain/Palin, and the Republicans.

Joey Buttafucco ran a business with a payroll and budget for years,
does that make him have more executive experience than any of the candidates? or maybe it makes him just as qualified for the presidency as Palin.

Bush, Cheney, Rove, McCain, got us into a war using LIES, McCain is a LIAR, now with McCain and Palin Hate Speech, they will get us into a war at home. Decent Americans who really love this great country must stand up and say "ENOUGH" Stick to the issues that will keep this country strong in economics, health, education, and peace.

Inciting lynch mob crowds yelling out "kill Obama" is wrong, and if you truly
love this country and all that it stands for around the world, you will write, email, call, your TV, Cable, or newspaper and tell them ENOUGH coverage of HATE SPEECH from McCain/ Palin.

Mr. Obama is attacking on issues NOT hate, McCain is not talking about issues, he is attacking on HATE and smiling when people yell out "kill" instead of distancing himself from such talk (does that make McCain a terrorist sympathizer)?

even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that .
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

Comment: In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future.
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything in the last 80 years.
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He didnt realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime.
