I'm sorry but to listen to Karl Rove of all people talk about what is good for the country is a lot like listening to Mike Tyson speak about what is good for boxing. He was behind the onslaught of George W. Bush another HIGHLY unqualified "folksy" kinda guy that barely 50.00000001% of the country agreed with. Mr. Bush then went on to immediately declare his "landslide" victory as proof that all Americans shared HIS views and moved us into fiasco after fiasco. We squandered every advantage we had, shamed Colin Powell into retirement and made his fat cat cronies even fatter. The ONLY good news is that McCain is that the tail is now wagging the dog and the McCain camp is now taking their political advice from the vermin over at FoxNews. America is tired of the same old BS about Ayers and Reverend Wright. What they do see is McCain looking like VERY tired, VERY angry, wierd little dude and his cutesy little side kick that probably couldn't find Iraq or Iran on a map much less lead us to war with either of them. Let's quit being silly and move as far away from the party that brought you the worst President and therefore 8 years we have EVER seen as a nation. Also if for some reason McCain and Palin win I would suggest that we through all we know about being Americans out the window. Let's do away with all laws and everything we thought we knew to be good and honest. Because clearly the Republcans and their ilk are seeing day where there is night. No one that has an ounce of honesty in their bones would see what Sarah Palin has to say as being anything more than mediocre at best. If all it takes to be President is to say EXACTLY what people want to hear then let's elect Jack in the Box. I don't give anyone points for saying America is the greatest country in the world. That takes NO risk at all and NO creativity. As Americans we ALREADY believe that. We don't need sunshine blown up our butts we need leadership. You know that stuff that Karl Rove is apparently blind to.

I wish she would talk more about Iranian born Valerie Jarrett who is the brains behind Obama and their ties to Iraqi Nadhmi Auchi and Syrian Tony Rezko who by the way was funded in all his property and business deals by ge capital. You know the parties in 2004 , Obama's new house sounds more then a little interesting almost like a terrorist conspircy

Newsweek wins the bad taste and biased news award for the photo of Palin......I joined just to post a comment, but will not be a reader of Newsweek again. What I have learned from the press in this election is that there is only biased news reporting in US. I AM DISGUSTED WITH BIASED NEWS REPORTING. I'm not even a republican......and I was horrified!

I'm disgusted with the press on the whole. I'm not a republican, but the photo of Palin and smear campaign by the obviously pro democratic Newsweek is very disgusting. The photo of Palin on Newsweek is just plain biased press. Newsweek has lost a reader...and has forgotten the law of 250......Through this election, the one thing that rings clear is that free press is dead and biased news is the norm in US.

She is truly a barracuda and definitely appeals to the baser instincts in people. Usually, when looking back or given time to think, people regret acting on the baser instincts.
I think, if the Republicans are smart, she will just be a flash in the pan.

The vice & presidential debates has become a comedy and nobody is mentioning the real problems with America.
Economy: Can not afford to keep the American Empire, it is funded on foreign debt.
Military: In addition to two wars and more being provoced, America does not question its right to bomb other nations, a war is wrong if it is not won, thats it.

I would love to see Pakistan bomb terrorist targets inside US and see the reactions. I would love to see Russia build missile shield in Cuba and surround US with russian army bases. I would love to see saudi arabia set up army bases inside America. I would love to see foreign countries pour millions into the US election to influence the outcome. How would America react???

Obama, Christopher Dodd and other Democrats created the current financial crisis when they blocked S.190 in 2005. Years earlier, it was Obama who successfully represented the recently indicted ACORN organization in their legal battle to force banks to bow to quota demands by providing loans to unqualified applicants. Then the Democrats in congress forced Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to loosen their restrictions on buying such "subprime" debt. None of these facts are something that Newsweek wil report because of their allegiance to Obama.

In days gone by we never tried to put lipstick on a pig. We did spend a lot of time trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but that never worked for us. But Karl Rove was able to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear twice now. What is next?

As a resident of Alaska, I take issue with the statement about Palin's executive experience. The question asked continually during the last two years by the people working for state government has been "Where's Sarah?" She has focused nearly exclusively on energy. Other departments contact her office asking for direction, the members of the legislature ask for her positions on areas of the budget and receive no response, unless it's much later with letters expressing her disappointment or vetoes of items. This does not give evidence of executive experience. Her experience and her knowledge about national and international issues is an inch deep based on what I've observed in the last 3 years.

Her ability to inspire would be such a huge asset for the Republican party if used in the correct time and place, but using her honky tonk antics to run for VP not only discredits her but the entire Republican party, and if, heaven forbid she wins, discredits America. I agree her ability to connect is an asset, but a used car salesman has that asset. People who have that ability usually use it to hide lack of substance or worse, lack of character. This is no exception. Rove obviously chooses not to compare her ability to inspire to others who had that ability who used it for the wrong reasons. What this article does is point out the single weakness of a democracy, which is when a majority of the people start to look at style over substance, there is no recourse available. I hope we're not to that point yet.

It was in days gone by in Iowa where we worked on the sow's ear.

Rove belongs behind bars. If McCain were truly a maverick, that's where Rove would be.

      And now for
The real truth. The American people, God love 'em, are not going to be buying your lies and smears and attempts to change the conversation from the real issues. Not this time!

The McCain / Palin ticket is a is a dead end. John McCain understands the issues only slightly better than his running mate, and that isn't saying much. Palin's "executive experience" as governor of Alaska is one notch above the national security experience she claims by way of being the Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard. Just because you have a title doesn't mean you have actually done anything. Does the fact that Alaska has 29,000 state employees mean that Palin is doing their payroll every month or meeting with approximately 2,250 of them every four weeks to see what concerns or ideas they have? Does the state budget and income have some bearing on whether or not Palin has a real understanding of national or international issues? Does her delegation of duties to her hand-picked cronies in Juneau mean that she is ready to be the VPOTUS? Mr. Rove can throw out numbers all day long, but they don't speak to the qualifications of the candidate. If I became the governor of my state tomorrow I could make the same arguments for myself the following day - executive experience, check (one days worth), Commander in Chief of the Arkansas National Guard, check, XX billion dollar budget, check. This woman, along with McCain, will say or do anything to get into office. Once in, I think McCain would be as disassociated from the post as our current president and VP Palin would be so lost in her position as to be utterly ineffective at whatever she hopes to do - a blessing, really.

McCain is living in the past on national and international issues while Palin holds a 19th Century social perspective. It is time for this great nation to take on the future with vision and hope and let go of the fear that has been used to divide us. McCain is a shadow of his former self and no longer has any inspiration - only aspiration. If McCain wants to take this contest into the mud then Obama should only counter McCain's accusations, quickly and forcefully, but not make any himself - except to point out that the strategy of division and diversion given to us by the author of this commentary has already done great harm to this country.

Former fed chairman Greenspan has said the country cannot afford McCain´s tax cuts for the super-wealthy.
Sarah Palin will make abortion illegal even in case of rape or incest.
Governor Sarah Palin cut funding for special needs children by 60 %.

    • Posted By: Mark Steven Zuelke @ 10/07/2008 4:10:12 PM

Yes and you can be absolutely certain the cuts were to trim non-essentials and clueless staff.
Sarah cannot make abortion decisions. The Supreme Court takes care of that issue.
If the country cannot afford tax cuts, then BHO is on super thin ice.

The GOP is grasping at straws. They have nothing substantive against Obama, but boy are they good at making up lies. This is the leading Karl Rove tactic for years, and if America falls for this again we should be ashamed of ourselves. Not to mention the obvious fact that this is all a smokescreen to keep the focus off of the fact that Palin and her Alaska associates are in contempt of court for refusing to testify in the Troopergate hearings. After Nixon and Clinton, Americans are to some extent jaded, but really, would you want a VP who refuses to attend hearings in her own defense, and instructs her employees not to testify? That smells like guilt. It surely doesn't give the impression that she has done no wrong and has nothing to hide.

This year, the GOP offers you an angry old man and a woman who, while personable, is desperately uniformed about national and international issues. Both of them are far right politically. McCain used to be a maverick, but since 2004 he's voted 90% with Bush. McCain's policies are not original or reformist, despite how he's tried to co-opt Obama's popular message of change. Please go to the websites of both of the candidates and read their platforms. Obama's Blueprint for Change has more good ideas than McCain's plan. Compare them yourself. Obama's basic premise is that tax dollars should be spent to make America stronger and to improve the lives and well being of our people. For example, he uses education programs to train a new technology workforce, contributing to energy independence, creating jobs and improving the economy. When you read McCain's plan you will find no over-arching design to get America back on track. Instead you'll find more tax cuts for the wealthy, de-regulation of the health care industry, and a stated intent to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I'm a Republican. Although I embrace some forward-thinking social values, in the past I've rarely voted Democrat. My thinking was that since Republicans grow robust economies, by voting Republican I'd be endorsing a plan that would grow wealth for our nation, and then we'd be able to afford social programs. It was a good strategy for a couple decades, but I have to say that the tenure of W. Bush has changed my mind. Not only is there nothing fiscally responsible about today's GOP, the insidious alignment of the party with religious intolerance has really turned me off.

On the other hand, the intelligent luminous thought of Barack Obama has ignited my patriotism. I want a President who puts America first and can get the economy back on track. In my mind, values voting takes a back burner when we are faced with a meltdown of the economy. It is time for a change, a real change. The Republicans have controlled the Presidency for 28 of the past 40 years, but they have fallen down on the job. The Democrats have a stellar candidate this year, and I am voting for Obama.

Rambling rhetoric, just like the campaign you support. The facts are about to light up BHO's true history and character like never before. He won't escape these facts. It's all over for you guys.
