These observations are from a man who was one of, if not, the chief engineer of our current president's policies! I voted for President Bush TWICE and he is leaving this country in the biggest mess in my 40+ years on this planet. The fact that any reputable news organization offers ANY forum to Mr. Rove is beyond my understanding. As far as I'm concerned, he should be ashamed to show his face, much less his words, in public!!!!

  • Posted By: parismarc @ 10/07/2008 4:36:22 AM

I think the comments here show what a divisive and hateful country the US will become if Obama becomes President.

    • Posted By: peterap @ 10/07/2008 2:19:36 PM

      BUZZZ----

Wrong. This country is this way thanks to men like Lee Atwater, Reagan's hatchet man. The guy who found the way to make "liberal" a bad word. It continued into Bush I. The hate of the right reached full fruition during the Clinton years. Both Rush Limbaugh and John McCain thought it was OK to make comments about the looks of Chelsea Clinton (for her sake, I'm really glad she turned out to be a beautiful woman).
Bush has used the divisions to keep power. Kerry tried to be above the fray, and he lost. So, it must be shocking that the left is willing to go down into the mud also, isn't it?
However, I got to give you right wingers a point on this: no matter what the Obama camp comes out with, the McCain camp seems to be coming out with bigger lies and more divisiveness. Kudos!

Gee Whiz, all you elitists! So, Democrats are the only people with enough intellegence to "lead the Nation"!

If McCain truly wanted a conservative woman with experience and credibility he could have chosen Elizabeth Dole, former cabinet secretary, former head of the Red Cross (who better to take a phone call at 3 am?) current US Senator, and darling of the conservative right.

Instead he chose a caricature with a uterus, who doesn't read, doesn't answer questions, and can't speak in complete sentences.

No, there are plenty of intelligent Republicans. Sarah Palin isn't one of them.

      • Posted By: peterap @ 10/07/2008 2:11:30 PM

Smart people are on both sides. I think Olympia Snowe is smart. I thought Lincoln Chaffee was smart. I think Mike Huckabee is smart--I just have issues with his wanting to inject tenets of faith into government. Hey, I admired John McCain for a while until he threw away his integrity, etc. to become President. Conversely, there are some on the left who are really dumb. It come down to issues and knowing how to deal with them. Bush has shown a complete lack of intelligence there.

      Yes

I wish the candidate would discuss global poverty more. According to The Borgen Project:
$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.
$540 billion: Annual U.S. Defense Budget

I think that a legitimate question would be WHAT she is inspiring. So far, it does not appear uplifting. It appears thuggish, and nasty.

Her behavior is not compatible with the religious teachings of Jesus --or any other major religious figure.

  • Posted By: NewAmerica @ 10/07/2008 1:30:07 PM

Who in their right mind would take anything that Karl Rove says as a good recommendation - He is responsible for the mess we are in - If I was McCain I would put a stop to his comments which just confirm how much McCain and Bush will be the SAME. Is our Country that stupid?

  • Posted By: jojo_2008 @ 10/07/2008 1:08:20 PM

EXCUSE ME, NEWSWEEK? SINCE WHEN IS KARL ROVE A RELIABLE SOURCE? HOW ABOUT YOU STOP PAYING HIM FOR HIS OPINION, AND SEND HIM TO CONGRESS TO TESTIFY?

  • Posted By: Disgustedwiththeidiots @ 10/07/2008 12:03:42 PM

Why is it an asset when Palin "inspires" and "connects" with people but "celebrity" "empty suit" "hot air" "rhetoric" when Barack Obama does? Oh that's right, it's only ok when it's republican. Numerous examples, far too many to cite here. But the fact is when it comes to the republicans, and most guilty Karl Rove, hypocrisy is the norm. I would like to believe that the American people are sick of being treated like idiots.

    • Posted By: Mark Steven Zuelke @ 10/07/2008 12:35:05 PM

...perhaps because it's the truth. People are sick of being "treated like idiots" and respond to the honesty and forthrightness of Sarah Palin. People respond to BHO as an empty suit because, compared to any major party presidential candidate in history HE IS ONE. BHO is a zero. John McCain is a HERO. Clear to all who look. Please vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin for president and vice president of the United States!!

      • Posted By: fccFH @ 10/07/2008 12:44:10 PM

Right. I am going to vote for a man who will continue on the path Bush set us on, and ruin our education, health care and social security systems. I will trust a man who has no radically different approach to Iraq and Afghanistan than his Republican predecessors, and I will trust a man who picked this halfwit, Polar Barbie, who has no grasp of the issues that face this country, no grasp of integrity, and spills nothing buts lies and accusations from her mouth. I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR THIS DISGUSTING TICKET! Please, people are sick of the torment that we suffered under Bush and they do not want it to continue. They do not want to be patronized for four more years, especially by a woman who is bellow their intellectual level. Please vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden for President and Vice President of the United States!!

        • Posted By: Mark Steven Zuelke @ 10/07/2008 1:00:00 PM

All that stuff you mentioned is ruined anyway. Obama is not likely to make things better because he will raise taxes, spend on entitlements, give money to liberal hate groups (where his friends hang out), compromise our national security, allow the UN to run our foreign affairs, deepen the energy crisis, ignore the needs of small business owners, ignore the Supreme Court's recent decision concerning gun ownership, radicalize our kids through education "reform", socialize the health-care industry, and no one with any brains wants to see these things happen.

Prosecutors move to delay Rezko sentencing, a hint he may be ready to spill political secrets

"Speculation has simmered for weeks that the key fundraiser for Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Sen. Barack Obama was whispering what he knows about corruption in Illinois government to federal prosecutors in hopes of getting a lighter sentence."

GOV. PALIN IS SHOWING WHAT ALL AMERICAN'S NEED IS THE INTEGRITY AND ENTHUSIASM NEEDED TO MAKE AJUSTMENTS THE IDEAS ARE BETTER THEN OBAMA'S LESS TALK AND MORE EXPERIENCE
EXPECT GREAT THINGS TO HAPPEN WITH THE PALIN - MCCAIN TICKET-THEY DO MAKE AMERICA A BETTER PLACE!!!!!!!

    • Posted By: fccFH @ 10/07/2008 12:37:42 PM

You can have all the enthusiasm in the world, that still does not make up for a complete lack of knowledge of the issues and history of this country. Terrible, horrible things will happen with the MCCAIN PALIN ticket- (in case you forgot, she is his running mate)- they will destroy America. Clearly you have no idea what the issues are otherwise you would have been offended, as most Americans are, that the McCain camp continues to skirt the real problems of this country and focus on petty crap that happened 40 years ago. Clearly you do understand that our economy, education and health care system, and social security are spiraling out of control, and obviously you have forgotten that we are at war, otherwise it would bother you that never once has Palin given her approach to attacking these issues. What do you see in the crazy, dangerous woman?

    • Posted By: IndyCentrist @ 10/06/2008 11:35:13 PM

What is with Palin supporters and the caps lock key? They just seem to go hand in hand.

Please...she is Alaska's answer to Jesse Ventura. Was in the right place at the right time when the voters wanted to dump the incumbents. Has made some positive steps but has found her way into a significant amount of scandal. Yes, great things are coming!

  • Posted By: richardcheese @ 10/07/2008 12:33:16 PM

Zip it, Rove. America has grown weary of the Republican agenda of dishonesty, greed and fear. You offer McCain/Palin as an antidote to Bush/Cheney? Jeez, why not just abolish term limits? What a joke. Change is coming, Karl.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Rhode Island Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee has called vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin a 'cocky wacko' and said her selection as John McCain's running mate has energized supporters of Democrat Barack Obama.
Former GOP senator calls Palin a 'cocky wacko'
Sarah Palin proved last night she's more qualified to host a game show than be Vice President of the United States.
I cannot believe that we are seriously thinking of placing this dodo bird within reach of the Presidency.

    • Posted By: Mark Steven Zuelke @ 10/07/2008 12:44:52 AM

Senator Biden has called BHO "not ready to be president" and admits he's not a the best choice for VP.
Palin has energized the Republican base with her passion, vision and honesty. Palin is the governor of a state, as were, since 1963, Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Bush before they became president. Clinton was governor of the big, powerful state of Arkansas and couldn't even see an ocean, let alone Russia, form the governors mansion. If Palin is a dodo bird, then BHO is a turkey. nya nya nya nya nya ....

      • Posted By: fccFH @ 10/07/2008 12:32:51 PM

Just to clear things up for you, the: I can see Russia from the Governors mansion was a joke on SNL- Russia can only be seen from a tiny island off the coast of Alaska. Anderson Cooper did a show from the island and the 150 residents all felt that Palin was mistake. But lets put that aside. I would love for you to tell me what her vision is for this country. Because all I have heard is gotchas, you bethcas, and we are going to clean up Washington. That is not a vision, it is random bile spilling from her mouth being eaten up by halfwits like you that are preprogrammed to respond however that campaign dictates. She has not once shared her- vision- on health care, education, the economy (she even shifted from this topic during her debate)- and the only vision she provided for Iraq and Afghanistan is we need to support our troops. Ill give you this, she has her heart in the right place, but her common sense and knowledge of the issues that face this country is totally lacking. We cannot afford a dodo bird in Washington, why do you people no get this- she will ruin this country!

      • Posted By: summer4077 @ 10/07/2008 11:57:01 AM

Palin said the same things about McCain...she was not in any way a McCain supporter until he tapped her, then she did an about face.

Zip it, Rove. As if McCain's not a "big spender, class warrior and cultural elitist". America has grown weary of the Republican agenda of dishonesty, greed and corruption. The funny thing is, you offer McCain/Palin as an antidote to Bush/Cheney. Jeez, why not just abolish term limits? Change is coming, Karl.

Haven't we learned? Weren't the last eight years presided over by the most average of Joes? Do we really want/need someone average, who claims that they can "relate to the common man"? This is the basic platform from which Sarah Palin is running and the topic which dominates many of her speeches.

Aside from being average, Palin maintains that she and her running-mate are the ultimate mavericks. Which, I believe, is the most ridiculous of claims a republican can make. I will address this later.

I don't understand how Americans can entertain the delusion that we need someone just like us in the Whitehouse. I would prefer someone in office who is exceptional and possibly overqualified. In other words, the polar opposite of me or anyone I know personally. Mediocrity does not qualify Sarah Palin to run this country.

That being said, Sarah Palin is not like you, nor is she a maverick. She and her husband made 1.2 million dollars last year, live in a mansion and are ridiculously attractive. Does that sound like your life? Just because she pumped out five future abominations against humanity and frequents her local ice rink does not mean she would befriend you, let alone associate with you. The only things you may share with Mrs. Palin are that you are white, straight, Christian and, if you are voting Republican, mentally handicapped.

Palin's bogus claim to an understanding of the common man is a desperate tactic, being employed to save a failing campaign. She may share the afore mentioned characteristics with you and I, but I would not say that her aptitude for field dressing a moose is a good representation of the aggregate.

Palin has proven, through her embarrassing interviews and incoherent ramblings, that she is completely unqualified to lead. In the Declaration of Independence there is a call for government legitimacy. This idea is loosely based on Plato's method of "The Philosopher Kings". In which only the best and the brightest should be eligible to lead. Sarah Palin may be bright, I'm not sure. But, stating that she is average automatically disqualifies her from the opportunity to lead, at least in my, and Plato's eyes. (It may seem cliche to base this argument on ancient greek philosophy, but I feel the point can be best proven when examined against the most general criteria.)

Sarah Palin has not proven her legitimacy as a candidate, and in that respect is not prepared to meet the needs of a country in peril.

Now, let me ask; Is Palin a maverick? No. She personifies the status quo in Washington. Her running mate, John McCain, voted with George Bush over ninety percent of the time. That ten percent in which he deviated from Bush may be considered "nonconformist" by a Republican, but the statistical buffs out there would disagree. There may be some dissonance within the campaign, (mostly because Palin doesn't understand McCain's policies) but that hardly qualifies either of them as "mavericks".

    • Posted By: Mark Steven Zuelke @ 10/07/2008 12:27:27 PM

...empty rhetoric. Facts: BHO is the most radically liberal candidate the country has ever seen. BHO has so many very troubling associations, friends, spiritual leaders that he is simply terrified will become the topic of this campaign. Just look at the reaction his campaign had with just one little mention of this history by Sarah Palin. NO ONE else has ever had this much to explain. When it hits the fan, he will not be seen as electable.

Oh, that's right, it's only ok when it's republican. I can cite many more examples of this republican, rovian hypocrisy but there is far too little space in this comment box. Rovian doubletalk hypocrisy, that's what the republicans have come to represent. Grow up.

There is a tone of desperation in the republican party as it seeks a little more time to finish screwing up not only the United States, but the whole world. A couple more wars and a few more economic crashes and that oughtta do her up. You betcha. Real nucular.

    • Posted By: olderwiser @ 10/07/2008 10:53:30 AM

Palin's tele prompter in the Republican convention gave her the words "new clear" for the word nuclear, so as to distance her from Bush's inability in eight years to learn how to pronounce the word correctly. But, in the debate with Biden, without the tele prompter, she's stuck with nucular. There's just something about that word.

      • Posted By: olderwiser @ 10/07/2008 10:54:54 AM

A certain pride in ignorance, I fear.

        • Posted By: olderwiser @ 10/07/2008 10:59:31 AM

If you have a job shoveling hockey out of the stalls at the race track, there is a legitimate pride in something less than scholarship and some mispronunciations are necessary to separate you from the elite who bet up in the stands. But, if you are in the higher echelons of our government, you are at least expected to speak the language of your country correctly. We've miss that quality in our highest office for the past eight years.

          • Posted By: olderwiser @ 10/07/2008 11:01:51 AM

As an ordinary blogger, I can incorrectly say, "we've miss that quality". Slip of the typing finger.

Ahh election time. One party pitted against another. One group, righteous. The other either evil or unenlightened. The media does a very sorry job of conveying accurate information. The people are bewildered or duped. What to do? Go back to the archives and see WHO SAID WHAT and When?
McCain may not understand the ecomony but he knew enough to raise questions about some of the agencies and their accounting practices. Its all in the archives. At least one Democratic Congressman has had the integrity to admit that he made a mistake when he discounted the concerns of the regulators. We are all human. We all make mistakes. Don't make a bigger one by ignoring the past when it is so easy for you to view the old C-Span programs. See who stonewalled the regulators. See who poured out their misguided venom. Now some of the very folks who brought us the meltdown are advising the Democratic candidates. Com' on don't be twice stupid.
