Do Obama and the Democrats deserve a lift in the polls as a result of the financial and mortgage problems? The answer from history is a clear NO. Here's the lead of a New York Times story on September 30, 1999:

"Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending" [link below]. That's 1999 folks. Clinton Administration, I believe.

Here's the lead of a New York Times story on Sept. 11, 2003:

"The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago. "[see link below] The Democrats killed the reforms.

McCain said in co-sponsoring the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190:

"If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole. The Democrats killed the Bill.

What was Barney Frank and fellow Democrats saying at the time of these attempted reforms? According to reports, Representative Barney Frank(D-MA) claimed of the thrifts :

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis, the more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

Representative Mel Watt (D-NC) added of the reforms "I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing." [ See Community Reinvestment Act, link below w/ history]

And where is the article about Bidens long standing love for the credit card industry lobby? Is that what you call protecting the middle class?

John McCain gave his word that he would run a high-minded campaign. In his desperation he has broken that promise and has adopted the same Rovian tactics he once denounced. Unable to win honestly on the issues, he is trying to 'swiftboat' his way into the White House.
Mr. McCain, 'Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?'

BHO claimed he was beyond partisan politics, would run an honorable, clean campaign. BHO has betrayed those goals. BHO is as full of manipulation as is possible. There is nothing else to the dude except empty promises that any candidate is capable of. His campaign is just as slick and slimy as any in memory. He is a disappointment to early supporters, a windbag ideologue to everyone else.

Even you know this to be a lie. McCain sold his integrity and started this slide into the gutter. I do not expect that Senator Obama will allow himself to be swiftboated as Senator Kerry did. Seantor Kerry felt that there were too many decent Americans who would not believe Roves' lies. History has shown us that decent people are all too often duped by smear artists like you.

...not very politically savvy, are we? You are spinning so fast that you have formed a black hole into which all truth is sucked, only to disappear forever. Fortunately, those "lies" about BHO are true. He has no substance, no credible experience, "won" his senate seat by default, not through his own ideas or efforts, has friends who are radical and anti-American. The news media isn't doing it's job. McCain will. VOTE MCCAIN

In response to the question posed by Laurie, "Is there any person -- male or female -- in the world who is less qualified to be President of the United States? " I would have to say myself. I am less qualified. I only wish to speak for myself, But I'll hazard a guess and say that there are at least a few other people like me (I haven't even finished college yet!) who are less qualified than Palin.

Your self-doubt and rational self-assesment makes you a big notch above Mrs. Hubris.
Character counts and you obviously have a great deal.

Regardless of their educational credentials, I think anyone who would REFRAIN from mentioning war with Russia over NATO issues with former Soviet Republics as a possibilty- three weeks after he/she hits the national scene - would be less damaging than Palin. I know high schoolers who I'd consider to be less dangerous and potentially more qualified than Sarah Palin.

You never know, You may not have finished college yet, but you could be a heck of a lot smarter than Paln. Give yourself more credit.

I am a conservative republican and I am curious why is Karl Rove is even commenting on politics in America?

I believe Mr. Rove has proven to be a traitor to this country and has compromised our national security for his own political gain. He is a perpetual liar and does nothing but encourage divisive language, pitting American against American to further his own agenda.

I am even more astounded that anyone trusts anything that comes from the mouth of this sleazy man.

Conservative Republicans need to get your party back from these people. You are all honest, hard working, good people. I have mostly Republican friends and come from a Republican family. The partisan hatred has not served American well, and Hurt the GOP far worse.
When it was Reagans shop, the message was rebuilding America post-Viet Nam. The Bush family and Atwater/Rove campaigns that divided to conquer have cost them me.
Brother, be well. May God's love guide us both.

The Left depicts Rove as "evil," but we'll wait forever for them to declare Islamic radicalizm or even Bill Ayres as evil, even though the latter two planned killings of innocent Americans because of their sick ideology. Rove didn't get to the exalted position of "evil mastermind" by losing elections. He got that label from Liberals upset by his winning political strategies. I'd listed to Karl Rove more than I'd listen to any Democrat.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 10/06/2008 4:52:54 PM

I know of no Democrats that support the Weather Underground, and I know of no Democrats who do not think Islamic Terrorism is evil. This is slander, and you are a sick person who needs a lot of therapy.

In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future.
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide the largest morgage bank in the world,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch which are 3 out of the top 5 wall street firms. Also, Fanny and Freddy Mae which hold 50 percent of the home loans in the United States.
The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. If they didn't the entire financially system would virtually shut down, the stock market would crash and we would suffer beyond what any of us have seen before.

McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.

Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He either didn't care or didn't realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime.
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a tanking economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?

Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time
running the biggest smear campaign in history.

They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that .
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

No the Free World has not been ushered inby the Bush Adminsitration alone. Take the time to do some searching. Go back to the C-Span archives and view the Congressional hearings that took place LONG BEFORE the current mess. Listen as Democratic Congressmen insult and dodge the regulators who were called upon to testify to the problems with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Drop the political hate, open your ears and your eyes and you will learn some of the truth about our current mess. Currently several of the men who were involved with Freddie Macand Fannie Mae are now economic advisors for Mr. Obama. That is not double talk. The tapes were recorded long before the campaign. McCain and Bush both warned and asked Congress to take action. Congress did nothing. Now here we are.

Rove is very bright and good at what he was hired to do, but he is evil to the core and at the end of the day his approach is bad for the nation...especially in a time of struggle (2 wars and a faltering economy qualify).

  • Posted By: Mystrallan @ 10/06/2008 3:59:15 PM

Typical Rovian argument obfuscation!! On the one hand, in reference to everything Republican (i.e.--McCain/Palin), he argues that judgement is better (or at least as important) as experience. In the very next breath, and with reference to the looming Democratic landslide, he argues, "But the race is tight...people have persistent doubts about whether Obama is qualified." What more evidence do we need that this type of high-level Republican equivocation is exactly what has ushered the entire "free-world" in the mess of its current position of sufferance?

Barak Hussien Obama scares me. How can americans think of voting for the most liberal senator to ever run for the office of President. The far Right is not nearly as scarry as those on the Far left. These are elitist who are invested in the downfall of America, Men like Ayers, Rev. Wright, Farakan, are the type. It is also clear that the reason for the Financial Crisis is all in the Democrats lap, yet many americans are so blinded by hatred for Bush that they cannot see or will not admit who's to blame. We are going to wake up in January and realize the horrible mistake we have made by electing someone like Barak Hussein Obama. There are good Democrats, but why are we at the point of electing the Worst of the Democrats. Why can't americans love America enough to vote for the Country and not for a political party. I will be gladly voting for McCain because he is a much better, safer, smarter Candidate than the democrats are offering. McCain has his problems, but I would rather have to deal with his shortcomings than Osama's, oops, I mean Obama's. Please, stop and think before you vote, is Obama with his extreme views and a voting record that proves it, worth giving up our country and the freedom our young soldiers have fought and diied for (for which obama has spoken of in a very negative way). To the Bush haters, who have commented on Bush and his associates, even to the point of saying "God have mercy on your soul!". If you can support a candidate that supports abortion even to the latest possible time, and supports gay rights, you don't have the right to ask God to have mercy on the soul of anyone. In fact, when you face God one day, how do you think God will feel about you and your views which are contrary to God's and stated in His Word.

It's a good thing your'e leaving soon. I am offering the cab. out the W.H . By the way ,if McCain and Paulin would apply the above it would put them even downer because this is precisely what they have been trying to do up to now . Thet definitely should trying somthing else like Palin teaching McCaine how to catch salmon in her 29000 employees ' venue. with g'o'l Rusia on the picture .

Barak Hussein Obama really scares me. I don't know why Americans can't see what's going on. Obama is the product of the extreme left. Those who actually hate America, would love to see a devastating attack of America just to say that we deserve it and Bush is the Blame. The extreme Right is not nearly as scarry as the extreme Left. American's have become so Gullable that they can't even see or admit that the Financial problems that America is having is NOT just Wall Street, but Greedy and corrupt Politicans like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Schumer--Don't forget Nancy Paloski. 85% of the Blame is the Democrats and that is proven fact, but America is blaming the Republicans--Go Figure! We better wake up before, we wake up in January and realize that we have elected an Anti-American president. Barak Hussein Obama sounds to much like Osama Bin Laden to be comfortable.

It disgusts me that Newsweek would even give this criminal a forum. You, Karl Rove, are simply a waste of precious breath. You belong in jail and hopefully once Obama gets into the oval office everything will be back on the table. You are a traitor to your contry and have supported war criminals in your actions. God have mercy on your soul!

I wish it were so, Mr. Exercise (or Ms.). Unfortunately, it is not. What I really don't understand from you "Newstweekers" is that you think Sarah is running for President. You people already have John dead!
Guess what, he is one tough old bird, obviously, tortured for 5 years in Nam. I really don't care if he is 72. I will bet he outlives you & me.

  • Posted By: Jezk- @ 10/06/2008 3:12:47 PM

    Dear Mr. Rove:

Nice article and a good explanation of the status of the Presidental Campaign. I think Candidate Obama has done a masterful job of keeping the electorate's attention on Sarah Palin and not on himself. The ability of John McCain to change that over the next four weeks will determine the election. If McCain can shift the focus of the inquiry into qualifications to be President he should be able to out score Obama, based on both lenght, dept and substance of the record of the two men.

I have several questions, just food for thought: If Palin's gender were reversed, would we be more tolerable of her ignorance? If Obama's race were reversed would we be so concerned about his friends? Something is very wrong with this picture. Is this a grand scale production of the Music Man or what!!!

We are crashing into a depression thanks to the Republicans according to the majority of Americans perceptions.
Let's gets some answers from the two mavericks as to how they will save the country's economy instead of smearing the opposition.
Also, I want to know about McCain's health, gambling, Mafia and Kremlin connections.
Then, let us see if the Legislative Committee of Alaska recommends impeachment for Palin for her multiple abuses of power.
Obama has answered all questions about alleged associations months ago. Old story. The answers are on his website.
Also, there is a copy of his birth certificate. If you want a copy, print it or contact Hawaii directly, pay the fee and they will send you a copy.

Its funny! Karl Rove is talking about JUDGMENT! He was the man that helped President BUSH win the White House twice. It is obvious that Palin is short on substance-- repeating catchy line after line, day after day, and if McCain somehow wins, she'll be closer to the Oval office heartbeat after heartbeat.
If Rove say Palin, I say that that more than confirms my vote for Obama.
