If this election cycle has demonstrated anything, it is that in order to preserve democracy in this country, it is passed time we reconsidered the additional protections provided the media by the Supreme Court in New York Times v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964), which protects the media from most slander and libel suits. While perhaps noble at the time in its conception, the media has abundantly demonstrated that for the advancement of their own political agenda, on both sides, and to fill the demands of the 24/7 news cycle, they are willing to abandon any pretense of objectivity or, more importantly, of journalistic ethics. Since they cannot exercise the power they have been given responsibly on their own, perhaps it is necessary to return the threat of legal sanction under which they operated prior to 1954.

I think it's rather interesting that you always pose Obama to look angelic, heroic...and headline him with favorable flair, and here, you use a poor photo, with shadows from Palin's eyeglasses, and so close you have to view the cover from a distance. I think it's childish. And the article was just more of the same...no new shots, no new mud, no new revelations, no new evidence...nothing new. Yawn. I'm so sick of the left wing media tactics being used in this election. My subscription is getting ready to expire and I think your magazine can get by without this "folks" money. I'm gonna let it lapse.

i appreciate the care with which you are all supporting obamas test .icals as you service your candidate but keep in mind he's not even in the office yet. save some effort for what you will do once he's elected.

You can't even spell the word "Obama" or the word "testicle." It must really burn you up inside to know that you're on the losing side of history. For every insult you attempt to lob at Obama and those who support him, you are left with the realization that you, and your candidate (if indeed you even selected one) are LOSING. As they say at sporting events when the losing team loses its cool, "SCORRRE--BOOAARRD!" You do realize, of course, that Obama opened up an 11 point lead in the Gallup polls today, and the battleground states are ALL breaking his way. Sucks to be you.

Here's an idea. Go take your huntin' rifle for a one-way trip into the woods. We'll all be better off, junior.

Palin just can not speak Standard English. I believe a Vice Presidential candidate with the possibility of being President should be able to hold a conversation in Standard English. This is what we expect from any high school grad, why can't we hold her accountable for this?

I too will never, never buy another Newsweek. Perhaps you need the definition of yellow journalism and while you criticize "mindless populism" you might ponder "mindless journalism" (see below). The article is one thing the "attack pictures" should engender disgust by your readers. Yellow journalism is journalism that downplays legitimate news in favor of eye-catching headlines that sell more newspapers. It may feature exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, sensationalism, or unprofessional practices by news media organizations or journalists.

I've had it. Are you guys reporting the news or are you supporting who you favor to be our next leaders in the US? I'm disgusted! It is so sad what You and the rest of the media has come to. A bunch of selfish, media reporters who make a buck slamming good, honerable people. It's so easy to slam character. Why don't you try doing some real journalism and research your facts before typing on a compter so you can get your story in. I will never..... ever pick up one of your magazines again and I hope others will do the same.

    Part 2

Vogler wasn't just a blowhard either. He put his secessionist ideas into action, working to build AIP membership to 20,000 -- an impressive figure by Alaska standards -- and to elect party member Walter Hickel as governor in 1990.

Vogler's greatest moment of glory was to be his 1993 appearance before the United Nations to denounce United States "tyranny" before the entire world and to demand Alaska's freedom. The Alaska secessionist had persuaded the government of Iran to sponsor his anti-American harangue.

That's right ... Iran. The Islamic dictatorship. The taker of American hostages. The rogue nation that McCain and Palin have excoriated Obama for suggesting we diplomatically engage. That Iran.

AIP leaders allege that Vogler, who was murdered that year by a fellow secessionist, was taken out by powerful forces in the U.S. before he could reach his U.N. platform. "The United States government would have been deeply embarrassed," by Vogler's U.N. speech, darkly suggests Clark. "And we can't have that, can we?"

The Republican ticket is working hard this week to make Barack Obama's tenuous connection to graying, '60s revolutionary Bill Ayers a major campaign issue. But the Palins' connection to anti-American extremism is much more central to their political biographies.

Imagine the uproar if Michelle Obama was revealed to have joined a black nationalist party whose founder preached armed secession from the United States and who enlisted the government of Iran in his cause? The Obama campaign would probably not have survived such an explosive revelation. Particularly if Barack Obama himself was videotaped giving the anti-American secessionists his wholehearted support just months ago.

Where's the outrage, Sarah Palin has been asking this week, in her attacks on Obama's fuzzy ties to Ayers? The question is more appropriate when applied to her own disturbing associations.

Great work, Mark. Oops, I meant to say, "what an elitist example of 'gotcha' journalism! How dare you use facts to point out Palin's actual record? Don't you realize we're trying to stop a Negro from becoming President here?"

I mean seriously, once you find out the truth about Palin, there's no other rational explanation for pretending to think Obama's "connection" to Ayers means two sh*ts in context. Get over it, lowbrows. You're looking at the end of Republican rule. But don't feel bad. For the immediate future at least, you can still go and shoot defenseless animals from airplanes.

It doesn't make me sick. It makes me wish there was a program like this one where I live. Coyotes run wild here and endanger our livestock and pets, not to mention our children.

ANYONE BESIDES Nobama WHO THINKs he can buy THE President's OFFICE?

  • Posted By: Cantabrigian @ 10/08/2008 9:34:45 PM

NOBAMA has been on the campaign trail with his song and dance routine for the past two years, so he has his shtick down pat! However, his resume is thinner than Sarah Pallin's and this was also the case with Hillary Clinton. However, the media clearly want this man to win . . . and he formed the VP committee.

  • Posted By: Cantabrigian @ 10/08/2008 9:32:31 PM

NObama's relationship with Ayer was first reported by the British press. . . no American media would ever print a negative story on the NObama! Especially when he makes shivers run down or is it up, their legs!

Poor Hardball Chris Mathews, he can not contain himself when listening to the Nobama.. The strange thing is the same is true of all the reporters, including those who ought to be impartial and just report the news.

Pallisor, I'm not commenting on whether abortion is right or wrong, just Palin's obvious contradiction of how she regards life. We're ALL God's creatures, as far as I'm concerned, and taking a life is taking a life.

I respect your point of view. I'm not a hunter, but the fact is hunting controls animal population. Over population of any species is bad for that and other related species as well. IMO, Palin has been unfairly portrayed as bloodthirsty animal killer, which just isn't so. Like the Native Americans, the few hunters I have known have a deep respect for the balance and health of the animal population, and are not crazed and vengeful killers.

The article makes some good points but it should not imply she is a dummy. If it wasn't a partisan point of view you could have logically progressed on another track with the education of Ms. Palin. From "Hockey Mom" to Governor is a learning curve, she was not pre-qualified as governor only elected based on the potential she showed. Many vote on character. In Ms Palin they detect and identify with her values and they believe she can learn and grow. Presidents do not govern alone. McCain will appoint fully qualified personnel to the Executive Branch and they will provide guidance and counsel. Elder politicians can be used as "grey beard" advisors to educate and challenge the President. This was why I did not question Obama's experience too much. We are discussing POTENTIAL not Presidential experience. The candidates have experiences that give them the potential to be President. This is why character, political ideology, past record, values and belief really drive voters. Obama excites about half the electorate on those points alone, not his "commanding grasp of the world".

Palin would be in over her head as VP... Seriously, what would the outcry be if a Black Man attempted to represent this nation all ill-prepared as Sarah Palin???
