Obama's potentially illegal donations amount to something more than $33 million. McCain's campaign has been entirely transparent about their donations and listed them online. Obama's campaign is not transparent in this way.

NC2Blue you should take your own advice and read the paper. Obama in touch with what is going on, that is a joke, when he should of been doing his job trying to figure out a way to solve this financial mess, he wanted to debate, he wanted to be in front of the cameras instead of working behind closed doors. Oh and your comment about surounding himself with experts. If those experts aren't reporters, I don't know what you mean. I heard him quote that the war in Iraq was not going very good because of what he had heard on CNN. Are they his experts. The Generals were saying we needed to increase our military strength for a short period of time to win this war. Did Obama listen to experts, NO. He has shown time and time again that he is only interested in being infront of the camera. He should be called "photo op obama", because that is what he is about. Caring about you and me, thats a joke, he cares about his hair and how good he looks more than you. Send him to Hollywood where he belongs. He is a good actor, but president he will be a joke.

Since you like to read, read about what he accomplished while he was a professor at law school, read about what his other professors said about him, read about his Muslim past and how quickly he dumped his Christian church when it became politically incorrect. Follow your own advice and start reading about the man you think will make a good president who has to get homeless and convicted fellons to vote for him. Start doing your homework.

Obamabots, and especially indianaeric: If you download the FEC contribution data from Obama's campaign, import to an Access database (Excel spreadsheet can't handle it - too many records), and actually examine it, you'll find thousands of rather "odd" entries. Many show multiple contributions on the same day totalling in the hundreds or thousands. Some have foreign addresses; many have no address at all, or are otherwise questionable. The FEC, and others, have identified thousands of such entries totalling around 38 million dollars. The FEC has asked Obama to supply the information, to recategorize the donations, or to refund them; to my knowledge he has not complied.

This issue is not just some right wing fantasy, and it reflects very badly on a guy who claims he wants accountability in government. Either the Obama campaign has been monumentally irresponsible in its record keeping, an open invitation to monumental fraud, or they have something to hide.

If this was the McCain campaign you'd be screaming bloody murder.

Is that why McCain rec'd numerous letters from the FEC wanting more disclosure about his campaign donors? Why did McCain have to return over $4 million dollars to his donors? The man is as crooked as Pat Buchanan's dick!

The GOP is grasping at straws. They have nothing substantive against Obama, but boy are they good at making up lies. This has been a leading Karl Rove tactic for years, and if America falls for this again we should be ashamed of ourselves. Not to mention the obvious fact that this is all a smokescreen to keep the focus off of the fact that Palin and her Alaska associates are in contempt of court for refusing to testify in the Troopergate hearings. After Nixon and Clinton, Americans are to some extent jaded, but really, would you want a VP who refuses to attend hearings in her own defense, and instructs her employees not to testify? That smells like guilt. It surely doesn't give the impression that she has done no wrong and has nothing to hide.

This year, the GOP offers you an angry old man and a woman who, while personable, is desperately uniformed about national and international issues. Both of them are far right politically. McCain used to be a maverick, but since 2004 he's voted 90% with Bush. McCain's policies are not original or reformist, despite how he's tried to co-opt Obama's popular message of change. Please go to the websites of both of the candidates and read their platforms. Obama's Blueprint for Change has more good ideas than McCain's plan. Compare them yourself. Obama's basic premise is that tax dollars should be spent to make America stronger and to improve the lives and well being of our people. For example, he uses education programs to train a new technology workforce, contributing to energy independence, creating jobs and improving the economy. When you read McCain's plan you will find no over-arching design to get America back on track. Instead you'll find more tax cuts for the wealthy, de-regulation of the health care industry, and a stated intent to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I'm a Republican. Although I embrace some forward-thinking social values, in the past I've rarely voted Democrat. My thinking was that since Republicans grow robust economies, by voting Republican I'd be endorsing a plan that would grow wealth for our nation, and then we'd be able to afford social programs. It was a good strategy for a couple decades, but I have to say that the tenure of W. Bush has changed my mind. Not only is there nothing fiscally responsible about today's GOP, the insidious alignment of the party with religious intolerance has really turned me off.

On the other hand, the intelligent luminous thought of Barack Obama has ignited my passion for politics and my patriotism. I want a President who puts America first and can get the economy back on track. In my mind, values voting takes a back burner when we are faced with a meltdown of the economy. It is time for a change, a real change. The Republicans have controlled the Presidency for 28 of the past 40 years, but they have fallen down on the job. The Democrats have a stellar candidate this year, and I am voting for Obama.

Obama is getting a bump out of this because people are not being reminded of the whole history where the economy is concerned, and who did what when. Call it bias by omission. The media simply says that the economy is Obamas strong issue, but never discusses the facts in detail. Further, who had a majority when is rarely relevant. If the simplistic Party In Power model were true, then the Democrats would not have needed the House Republicans when they tried to pass the bailout bill, as Democrats have the majority in both houses and there is no threat of a veto. In theory, they do not need the Republicans to vote at all. In fact, something like twelve (12) Democrats from Barney Franks own banking committee voted against the bill. Obviously, it is not so simple and the media does the voter a disservice by doing little more than reinforcing the error. A similar argument would be to say that the economy appeared to be doing fine until the Democrats took over control of Congress and the power of the purse, then it tanked. As an aside, the media also misleads regarding the Clinton economy when they fail to mention that it also ended in a recession, requiring the first round of Bush stimulus checks immediately after he took office..


Do Obama and the Democrats deserve a lift in the polls as a result of the financial and mortgage problems? The answer from history is a clear NO. Here's the lead of a New York Times story on September 30, 1999:

What was Barney Frank and fellow Democrats saying at the time of these attempted reforms? According to reports, Representative Barney Frank(D-MA) claimed of the thrifts :

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis, the more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

Representative Mel Watt (D-NC) added of the reforms "I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing." Senator Obama has received money from small donors like myself who have donated $25.00 maybe $30.00 a month over the course of his campaign. Senator McCain is jealous, desparate and old. His answer to everything is "I know how to win the war." He's a war-monger. But guess what? Over the next month, small donors like myself are going to donate even more money to Senator Obama because we believe in the leadership he can provide our crumbling Nation. Palin is disgusting! She overshadows McCain at every event and she has her own agenda, not his. As a woman, I'm embarrassed by her. Senator Hillary Clinton has class, she's intelligent, and she was a top notch first lady. She is someone we can be proud of and look up too. There were plenty of other Republican women of clout that McCain could have chosen other than this air head Palin.

Please..... If you don't know who Obama is by now....... he's not the one with the problem.

Reading comments like the one lurkswithin below is almost as frightening as listening to McCain's sorry VP pick Palin accuse Obama of "palling around" with terrorists. What an ugly display of desparation (Palin), what a dissappointing display of sheep like ignorance (you), and what a indefensible willingness to spew lies and half truths to the American people (Republican Party).

If you're reading Newsweek then clearly you are capable of reading other things and performing other activities such as research to help form a fair and balanced position of your own. (Right now you sound like a poor imitation of some right wing radical anti-muslim, anti-black, anti-democratic group of idiots.).

While you're educating yourself - why don't you pick up an actual paper. Guess what - the economy is in the toilet right now... and we don't know what happens next... and this is scary and important and real. My brother lost his job (in a regular job so no golden parachute), my parents want to retire next year (that's out), my 5 year old nephew was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (can you say pre-existing condition), and the money I had in a 529 plan for my daugther has lost 30% of its value (and she is a college sophmore and needs the money now!). These issues won't mean anything to you, but I'm pretty sure "Joe Six-Pack" is feeling the pain too (wink, wink).

Want to know why Obama is winning? Three reasons: 1) he actually understands that the economic issues I listed above are what are more important to Americans than some random, pereripheral, inconsequential association; 2) his personal intelligence and willingness to surround himself with experts and think ahead to how we handle thiss, and 3) he is an adult.

I suggest you grow up too.
