    Jimbo56, the ground you cover is well worn and silly. I know lots of teenagers (adults too) who spend time trying to figure our their reltigion. I kind of like the idea that he made a deliberate CHOICE to become a christian. Can't believe you want to take on publicity stunts and photo ops. McCain is really the master here. No, he's not as good looking (or as interesting) - but what do you call his campaign suspension? Sara Palin? Offering to enter his wife in some Harley Davidson beauty contest (which he didn't realize was topless)? Or how about his shamless milking of his POW experience? For heavens sake - we know - you're a hero McCain? Or better stated - you did an incredibly heroic thing once. Because if you want to be a real hero McCain, stop whipping up radical right wing hysteria about Obama. And the next time an audience member shouts out that Obama is a terrorist - take a stand and tell him they've just gone too far. Obama refused to let anyone in his campaign speak ill about Palin"s daughter. But someone in McCain's hysterical audience yesterday, a supporter called Obama a terrorist - and he let it go unanswered. Someone else in Palin's hysterical audience said "kill him" (referring to Obama) - and SHE said nothing. Nothing. John McCain is no hero. He's just a mean, desparate, old guy who once did an incredibly heroic thing.

    The GOP is grasping at straws. They have nothing substantive against Obama, but boy are they good at making up lies. This is the leading Karl Rove tactic for years, and if America falls for this again we should be ashamed of ourselves. Not to mention the obvious fact that this is all a smokescreen to keep the focus off of the fact that Palin and her Alaska associates are in contempt of court for refusing to testify in the Troopergate hearings. After Nixon and Clinton, Americans are to some extent jaded, but really, would you want a VP who refuses to attend hearings in her own defense, and instructs her employees not to testify? That smells like guilt. It surely doesn't give the impression that she has done no wrong and has nothing to hide.

    This year, the GOP offers you an angry old man and a woman who, while personable, is desperately uniformed about national and international issues. Both of them are far right politically. McCain used to be a maverick, but since 2004 he's voted 90% with Bush. McCain's policies are not original or reformist, despite how he's tried to co-opt Obama's popular message of change. Please go to the websites of both of the candidates and read their platforms. Obama's Blueprint for Change has more good ideas than McCain's plan. Compare them yourself. Obama's basic premise is that tax dollars should be spent to make America stronger and to improve the lives and well being of our people. For example, he uses education programs to train a new technology workforce, contributing to energy independence, creating jobs and improving the economy. When you read McCain's plan you will find no over-arching design to get America back on track. Instead you'll find more tax cuts for the wealthy, de-regulation of the health care industry, and a stated intent to overturn Roe v. Wade.

    I'm a Republican. Although I embrace some forward-thinking social values, in the past I've rarely voted Democrat. My thinking was that since Republicans grow robust economies, by voting Republican I'd be endorsing a plan that would grow wealth for our nation, and then we'd be able to afford social programs. It was a good strategy for a couple decades, but I have to say that the tenure of W. Bush has changed my mind. Not only is there nothing fiscally responsible about today's GOP, the insidious alignment of the party with religious intolerance has really turned me off.

    On the other hand, the intelligent luminous thought of Barack Obama has ignited my patriotism. I want a President who puts America first and can get the economy back on track. In my mind, values voting takes a back burner when we are faced with a meltdown of the economy. It is time for a change, a real change. The Republicans have controlled the Presidency for 28 of the past 40 years, but they have fallen down on the job. The Democrats have a stellar candidate this year, and I am voting for Obama.

    Putting a president in that you would "most like to share a drink with" isn't the healthiest thing that we ever did. Look at Bush. Dog-gone-it, hopefully this year intelligence will trump the "good ol' boy and gal" (wink,
    wink)

        I like how you try to paint Obama as an elitist, while ignoring the fact that McCain was the son of an Admiral, lead a priveleged life, went to the finest schools, and he and his wife are worth over $100 million. I think McCain is more the elitest than Obama. Of course, you have shown as much class as McCain with the way you are throwing around the insults to the people who have different views than yourself.

    How a McCain/Bush/Schmit/Rove campaign would Change a Light Bulb

    How many members of McCain/Bush/Schmit/Rove campaign does it take to change a light bulb?

    1. One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed;

    2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed;

    3. One to blame American Voters for burning out the light bulb;

    4. One to arrange the invasion of a country rumored to have a secret stockpile of light bulbs;

    5. One to give a One Trillion dollars to Wall Street for the new light bulb;

    6. One to arrange a photograph of Bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a step ladder under the banner: Light Bulb Change Accomplished;

    7. One campaign insider to resign and write a book documenting in detail how McCain/Bush/Schmit/Rove was literally in the dark and out of touch with the American Voter

    8. One to viciously smear #7;

    9. Sarah Palin to campaign on TV and at rallies on how John McCain has had a strong light-bulb-changing policy all along;

    10. And finally one to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country.

    The verdict is in. At a time when the terrible, terrible state of the economy is causing US citizens such as the guy in California to kill this morning his wife, three children, mother-in-law and self, why do we continue to participate in mudslinging. The state of our economy is a very serious and grave issue at this time. We can not waste time engaging in mudslinging that the only purpose it serves is to divert the very, very serious issues of the economy that our country is faced with. I think we as Americans are very capable of determining one???s character, thats our job and we don???t need any help in accomplishing it. Please this is our time (the American People), we have a decision to make on Nov 4, which is only weeks away. We would ask that the candidates not waste any more of our time trying to influence the us whether or not someones character is upstanding, we can do that. What we wish would be done is for the candidates to take time and share a strategy dealing with the economy with us that we don???t loose anymore people as we already have in the case in California to collateral damage.

    This election is only about four words here people: It's the economy stupid!!!

    • Posted By: paproudmom @ 10/06/2008 3:09:57 PM

      It is about so much more. Obama can only win if this country is in trouble. Many people voting for him are really just angry at Bush or blame the Republicans when there is really much blame to go around. It is a shame that a candidate gets elected not because of their strength's but because the American public is mad. They are unfairly turning their anger on McCain. Obama is NOT what this country needs. Hopefully, if he is elected, it will only take the American people four years to realize their mistake.

        Unfairly taking out anger on McCain? Oh, because I see that there is no blame that falls at his feet, right? Christ knows that he wasn't there for the past quarter century in the federal government. Mabey if he wasn't acting like such a douche bag for the past three months the country would be leaning his way. Just a thought.

        • Posted By: paproudmom @ 10/06/2008 3:38:58 PM

          Yes I feel unfairly. McCain fought against many of the decisions that were wrongly made. He has made mistakes in his campaign. That however is not an excuse to elect someone who will not be a good for this country.

        He is a graduate of the US Naval Academy. Although he graduated near the bottom of his class, he was known to be highly intelligent. His experience in the US Military as a naval aviator/officer both before and after his POW time. What strength of character he developed as a POW would surely help.. I cannot imagine that most of us could have endured what he did as a POW. He served two terms in the US House of Representatives, and has been a US Senator since 1986. McCain is known for his work in restoring diplomatic relations with Vietnam and for his bi-partisan work in the US Senate. He has served as Chairman of the International Republican Institute. Which is an organization that supports the emergence of politcal democracy worldwide. He co-authored a memoir which was a best-seller. He has a deep love and respect for this country. Actually I see quite a bit that would qualify him. You probably are too blinded to see any of it so I don't know why I am wasting my time.

        • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/06/2008 3:47:12 PM

          He was known to be highly intellegent? Ok, lets say thats true, he graduated 894th of 899 at Annapolis; this either means that he was not the brightest bulb, or he lacks any discipline or respect for the academy, especially in lew of his family heritage. He wrote in his memoir, that his being taken prisoner was because of his own reckless actions, stating that he didnt even take evasive action to avoid being shot down; which must speak to his judgement. He has been a politician for a quarter century, which makes him about as big of a "Old boy, D.C. insider" as anyone in the government. He was involved in ethics violations, and along with your, "he was known to be highly intellegent", he is also known and documented as having an explosive temper. He has an admitted lack of insight on the economy, and i stress, admitted. He also has never been involved in a war we won as a country, which negates his, "i know how to win a war" statement; and he never held a high ranking role in the military. He did help to normalize relations with Vietnam, which is great, but he is clearly not a pilar of diplomacy, as can be shown in his own comments. Lastly, he is 72, with former health problems, and the person he chose to put behind him on the totem poll of gorvernance? The appitemy of unqualified. Dont feed me the party line bs, she is not even close to the most qualified person he could have picked; which once again, goes to judgement.

          Is he an evil man? No. Has he been a good Senator for the state of Arizona? Yes. Does he deserve honor for his service to the country? Absolutely; but military service doesn't mean he should be given a pass on his obvious flaws and ties to his party, just ask John Kerry.

              Yeah, i look at it like 50% of the country as a whole. I look at it like 80%+ look at it in terms of his ties to Bush. I'm wrong though? Yeah, nice try. I notice you didn't bother to discredit any of the facts; but facts don't matter much to your side this year it seems, it's all about personality. Which also does no good for John McCain, because Obama gets higher marks in the "who would you rather have beer with at your bbq".

              • Posted By: paproudmom @ 10/06/2008 4:44:10 PM

                You are not representativeof 50% of the country. They may be voting for Obama but you are extreme. If he takes the big money he is classified as an elitist, if he refuse the big pot and take the smaller, he is accused of laundering. Damned if he does, hanged if he doesn't. Enough already. What about those 177 lobbyist on the Rep campaign payroll, 84 of which lobbied to create the mess we're in now. The link below contains a purported list of the top 25 in Congress who got contributions from the folks at Fannie and Freddie. Obama is listed third, after Dodd and Kerry, even though Obama is just a junior Senator. Obama is followed next by Clinton. Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi are on the list as well.

    Then there is the Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher J. Dodd who allegedly got special mortgage deals from Countrywide, who gave preferential rates to 'friends' of company's chairman.

    You can choose to place the leadership of this great country in the untried hand of Obama if you choose, but I can't see any reason to do so other than blind hope or faith because he has no track record of character and no evidence of leadership other than verbal eloquence. You can dislike McCain for being old, supportive of a strong military , and unwilling to grant those that wish to distroy our country even the perception that they have won. But there are very very few who have given so much for their country and demonstrated time and again a dedication for what they believe to be good and right for our country, even when it might be politically costly. Sen. Obama may be a great president someday, and I may even vote for him,, but not until he learns to place his county first and his political amibitions much lower.

        Geez...it seems you can't have a real dialogue with a democrat anymore! We used to be able to argue the issues, the records of the candidates and what they commit to do in office. But since there is nothing of substance to say about Barack Obama, here come the personal attacks on John McCain. Tell me how Obama's tax increase on the wealthiest 2% of our population is going to fund a tax reduction for the rest of us and fund new expenditures? What experience has prepared him for the role of Chief Executive? An advocate role in his community and a rookie tenure in the Senate? "...five planes...divorced a sick wife for a wealthier, younger one...amgry old man..." - this blatant spin might be funny if I hadn't heard it long ago and learned the facts behind them. And especially if the subject wasn't the presidency of the US.

    Oh, give me a break. The author complains because Palin's worth $1 million?! Hell, Michael Isikoff probably has twice that amount. Michelle Obama rakes in over $300,000 a year working for a hospital board corporation--and publicly instructs young people not to work for corporations, to go into community service instead. Now, that's news. That's hypocrisy of the richest kind. You snotty liberal elties dislike Palin because you can't control her, and because she says what she means. AOL complained because Palin's house might be larger than Biden's: Well, I hope so! Paln has five kids and Biden only has three. Or do you want Palin's children all sharing the same bedroom so you can call her a redneck? You're a bunch of phonies who never asked John Kerry how many houses he has (many more than McCain) and don't think it odd that there's an eager Sarah Palin imitator (Tina Fey) but no one is stepping up to the plate to caricature Joe Biden. Why is that? Because it's typical of liberal bigotry. One standard for yourselves and another for everyone else. The truth is, you believe in freedom of speech until someone disagees with you. Newsweek is run by liberal Democrats and stocked with partisan Democrat writers. Why do you think people don't flock to read your magazines? Since you became blatantly partisan (and now, openly pro-Obama and anti-McCain), your readers are doing the smart thing by boycotting you.

    • Posted By: Nins @ 10/06/2008 6:32:45 PM

      Rebecca,

      1) Palin is worth at least $2.5 million, not $1 million as you state. And I don;t care how much money I candidate has anyway. I care about their plans, their ideas and their morals.

      2) Both Barack and Michelle Obama worked in community service for YEARS before taking their current high paying positions, so there is no hipocrisy involved when then encourage young people to do as they have done and give something back.

      3) People do not dislike Palin because she says what she means. We dislike her because when she speaks without a script, what comes out of her mouth is unintelligible garbage that means nothing. We have already suffered under one intellectually challenged puppet President for the past 8 years. Is this really the best the GOP can do for us? Honestly, I would rather vote for Karl Rove than for Sarah Palin. At least with him you know where you stand. Instead of voting for the pupet, we'd be voting for the puppet master.

        The Obamas did NOT receive their millions legally or honorably.

    Why can't supposedly bright bloggers keep to the subject of the article? This bs in our country's time of crisis is an insult to everyone's intelligence. Naturally, I can see the McCain loyal going negative and doubting the support Obama has created economically and spiritually.....they are losing and losing badly BUT....McCain is an "Honorable Man"...he should remain honorable and so should you.

      Obama is not honorable. That's why you support him. He has promised you handouts that he can't deliver.

      Dear cheesecoach,
      just what has Obama done for the US that is economically positive?
      And spiritually?
      You mean why don't the unenlightened see Obama for the messiah that he really is?

        RockRibs, it is obvious that by "economically" Chesscoach is referring to all of the donations thats millions of Americans have given in support of Obama. You can add me to that list. I'm a Republican who has donated the maximum allowed to Obama's campaign. As for spiritually, it's a shame that your candidate (McCain) fails to inspire people. Really a shame.

        Chesscoach's comment was excellent. There was nothing there for you to tear into, even if you happened to disagree. You are starting to sound bitter, RockRibs.
