when I go to they gym, recently, one girl had a shift saying "help me find my g spot" "c u m" something and one girl had on a thong right in front of my on the stair climber...it was awesome while also being a sad commentary, this was at a college, yesterday a guy from a frat had a shirt saying "don't be a p u s s y, GET p u s s y" on the front of his shirt in large letters..once again, awesome, but also inappropriate, and most likely unfortunately misleading....otherwise, I will join, and the girl never let me help her find her g spot either...so a bummer in both cases.....beer ads act like jessica biel will do me if I drink bud or whatever.....but the thong was nice....when I tried to rip it off with me teeth remarkably I got slapped.....one time when I commented on the fact that a girl had a hole in her shorts and I could actually see her vagina, which was true, her boyfriend wasn't amused...I am able to hold my own, I guess I am young AND out of touch apparently at the same time, because you don't have to disrespect to GET LAID, but you do have to respect yourself to GET AHEAD or so I was thought and I have never had any problem getting laid, have never worn these shirts, as a rule I don't like displaying ads for other groups except for races which I have participated in, my local brewery has a shirt "beer with balls"; it is near cooperstown....

women who don't want to be treated as hookers still act, dress, and behave as hookers....southern girls are much hotter so I am not really tempted, and the tight clothes just looks like a sausage in casing....anyway, somebody starving won't differentiate....southern girls while wearing less clothes because it is hot as ()^ still have more self-respect...at least back in the day......(not too far back)....whatever.....git r dun...maybe I will be single again who knows??? then I probably will be out of touch...the gross old single guy at the bar ...anyway....if mccain/palin get in, women won't have any rights and guys can just club and drag em like in mccain's times....which once again will be awesome from one perspective but not so much from another....there are pros/cons to everything....

There should not be a liberal/conservative or Democrat/Republican split on this issue. I do not advocate legal restrictions - they would be found unconstitutional and even measures found legal like the "war on drugs" were ineffective.where the behavior is popular. What needs to happen is simply that the American people need to let it be known they will not tolerate this garbage from corporate America. Both those on the creative end in the advertising field (who tend to be Dems) and their big business employers (who tend to be GOP) need to know we will not buy any of their products if they promote this assualt on the self-image of the nation's children. Networks need to be told that we will avoid programs that do the same. The use of such elements as public disapproval and even "shame" is far more effective than censorship. The recent turn against smoking in public is a prime example. Again, this is not an issue that either party has a monopoly on - both have been in bed with the producers of "pedophile chic."

I agree that our children are far too exposed to toys and clothes with sexual overtones. We need to preserve their innocence throughout their childhood. It is wrong when young girls are dressed as mini-hookers. At high school dances, kids are dancing in far too sexual ways and adults are just standing by and letting it happen. We become part of this problem if we stand by and do nothing.

  • Posted By: ohiomamacita @ 10/08/2008 10:58:27 AM

I agree with the author -- our young children are assaulted by toys and clothes that are meant to convey sexuality. Yes, sex is a healthy, normal part of life (and in my strong opinion, part of a healthy marriage), but our girls don't need to be dressed up like little prostitutes. This past week at the high school homecoming dance, kids were grinding each other instead of dancing in a fun, clean manner. This behavior is not acceptable and we as parents shouldn't tolerate it.

I wonder if the author investigated or even cared about the root causes of "pornography itself? Unhealthy and puritanical attitudes toward sexuality are what causes the "porn culture" to be so pervasive. People have always thought and fantasized about the "forbidden." When sexual activities are treated as dark and dirty then it is natural that "upstanding" members of society will not want other people to know about their needs and fantasies. Thus pornography... Porn gives people a private outlet for urges that they cannot take part in for real for fear of ostracism or censure. However, if sexuality in a wide variety of consensual forms was treated as normal and beautiful, the need for porn would likely decrease greatly. Our society needs to get over the idea that sex is dirty. Now I'm not saying that people should be able to "go at it on the subway during rush hour", because there are societal interests in propriety. The thrust of protecting children as regards to sex should be concentrated on shielding them from sexual behaviours because they are simply not mature enough to understand them, not because the behaviour is dirty or somehow unnatural.

I don't remember who said it, but perhaps the people railing against pornography and knowledge of sexuality in general would do well to remember this quote... "Knowledge of a thing gives you power over that thing! Ignorance leaves you powerless and at it's mercy!"

The Apostle Paul said in so many words..." I'm free to do everything, but, everthing may not be beneficial to me."
Personally as I look around not only this country but the world at large...I see "our moral compass" pointing in the wrong direction. It has become like the GPS that tells you to turn turn left at the next intersection not knowing it is a one-way street going the wrong way or worse yet, a street with a railroad track!

This is not so hard to fix in my household with children, girls and boys, from 19 to 5. We don't watch TV unless there is something very worthwhile going on. Turn off the TV. Don't bring literature into your home that contains the filth. This is not making them live in a bubble. It is making an active choice as to what you listen to and watch. Make sure your children understand who they are and where they came from. Give them a sense of self worth. Don't make yourself part of the confusing sexuality problem by how you dress, act, speak. It is okay to tell your kids "No, this is not a decent way to dress or act." It is imperative we explain to them that they are of value and not to let anyone degrade them. Yes, kids have a lot of darkness to wade through on their way to adulthood, but if they have a good, solid base they will be strong enough to do it. Now as for the parents and role models of these children.... how about looking at ourselves. If we want better for our kids than this we have to be active in showing them a better way and alternatives to filling their minds with such valueless culture. Get off the couch, away from the computer, youtube, etc., get informed and make a difference. The only thing that drives this sexual culture this is that we spend our money on it. If filth quits being supported, it will be gone.

Give me a break, can we get over ourselves here? "orgy" is one word while "apple pie" is, clearly, two. Typically searching for one word yields more results than two. Lets play fair or just dont play at all.

I hate how all the religious wackjobs here say that the bible is the answer!!!
First, religion has caused more harm to the world than anything else. And the reason that pornography is so huge in this country is that people here are soooo sexually repressed that people have to find an outlet. Americans are hypocrites!!!! They say they hate sex and yet have the largest porno industry on the planet. Coincidence?? HELL NO!!!

SO GET OVER IT ALL OF YOU RELIGIOUS NUTJOBS WHO STILL THINK THERE IS AN INVISIBLE MAN IN THE SKY!!!!!
AND NO ITS NOT SUPERMAN EITHER

I hope for your sake you're right, religion_is_a_scam. What does the fact that people have used religion abusively have to do with whether there is a God or not? Sadly your conclusion is the product of a humanistic Godless society.

ANCIENT HUMANS CREATED THE IDEA OF GODS AND GODESSES IN ORDER TO TRY TO EXPLAIN NATURAL PHENOMENA AND ALSO TO COMFORT THEM ABOUT THEIR FEARS OF DEATH. TODAY IS NO DIFFERENT. SCIENCE WILL EVENTUALLY EXPLAIN EVERYTHING AND CERTAINLY NOT IN OUR LIFETIME

Ill tell you something....The imaginary man i follow that you put so nicely.... intends sex to be wonderful and special between husband and wife.... My god does not hate sex, but he hates the perversion that man has done with it. What positive thing have you seen people having sex before marriage? Or people doing whatever the they want with their sexuality. Ill tell you...kids are hurt , only have one parent., or not having any parents... they grow up confused and living the way they want, because there parents and selfish people dont know any better. People lack GOD!!! If anyone ever read the bible they can see that god blesses sex with your partner... not with many or with the same sex.... you cant make kids with two men or two women... the fact that your here is because the relationship with a man and woman. God knew all that can happen when we take matters into our own hands. What he wants does not harm us but only helps us.... you know you can always try it, your willing to try everything else.... and if you cant its cause you want to remain being selfish and not thinking of others only yourself. Before you judge god read his word, it should not bother you... and again if it does im sorry, i pray for you that you may heal and if anyone has hurt you or let you down that you can forgive them. " If today your hear his voice, harden not your hearts" PSALM 95: 7-8

Britney, Paris, did we invent them, or make them? Are we all so soless that we care who they screw, are we so cut off from real human contact that porn has gone beyond a cuirousity to a several billion dollar a year business? To me the two constants in American society are the made up world of sex and violence, viewed at a respectable distance, and about as taxing on the human brain as taking a dump! More than discuss this subject... maybe we should all go take a long look in the mirror. P.S. Insert hand joke here, go ahead, but that is what I think your reaction to sex and violence is anyway.

what I think is worse than porn is violence - that is the real porn. the culture and celebration and acceptance of violence, crime, mafia, conquest. the society permeating acceptance that violence is a good for entertainment, and inevitable reality ...... but how do you get rid a society of porn? forbid selling it. let it live as a hobby, noncommercial, as an expression of free speach. but dont allow to make money off it.

I am from Africa, Ethiopia born and raised, I do not understand all these crying about kids being sexed up... or what the TV is showing bla bla... be a parent and be in control. When was the last time you (parents) had the uper hand on your own parents? what changed now?? and do not entertain this as a problem unless you want to make it a problem it all about parenting and the lesson you want your child to learn about his/her environment and your core value as a society.

I can only agree that our children are learning by adult example. Case in point, my family. We have three wonderful and intelegent daughters who were raised to be far more honest than most their own age. They were until we sepparated that is. My wife joined a Wiccan circle run by a very self serving "High Priestess". I have no issue with true Wicca as it is the practice of the TRUTH in nature. The woman who has full control of my wifes life knows one truth alone. Her own needs. My middle daughter is also involved in this group. This July past my wife and daughter went on a Wicca retreat. My wife was gotten drunk and given as a GIFT to this High Priestess' former, and rumored still occasional, lover. My wife was turned in to a bloody DOOR PRIZE as she kicked my daughter (then 15 and under the age of legal consent in North Carolina) out of the tent and proceeded to violate our wedding vows with my daughter LISTENING. My daughter came home with my wife, wanted to be put on birth control immedietly, and apparently had to go out and do it herself. She did. Prior to joining this cult my daughter was a very modest and shy girl and dressed appropriately well in light of what other girls wear. Three days ago this same child was caught by her grandmother after school in a fast food resteraunt parking lot. When she left for school she was apparently dressed fine. My mother-in-law was shocked to see a girl she had shrugged off as just another misled child turn out to be her grand daughter. She was now wearing a tight mini skirt, a shirt too brazen to even be called a midriff, and knee high lace up leather boots. I had to move out after the afair. The cult leader, being a former police officer, walked my wife through many lies to have imposed a "civil restraining order". This means I never hurt anyone, never blew up, never abused a soul, but I had to leave the home because my wife wanted her boyfriend to move in (they claim now to be only good friends and tell everyone he sleeps on the couch...she must be so proud of this loser, not even being able to admit this to friends). Shortly after all this my oldest girl, 17, decided she is moving in with her boyfriend. I find it ironic...my wife got pregnant on prom night (not mine, I met her years later) at the age of seventeen, and now, for the sake of a weak mind she has allowed another control, I have no doubt my middle girl will be pregnant before that.

So yes, place appropriate blame on parent...just not ALL of us. MY girls were good, honest girls. I can no longer see them, at least until February, so I am poweless to even turn it around. My only hope is that my wife comes to grips with what has been done to her, being GIVEN to a man like a harem girl of past, and start raising our kids. In the meantime the damage is done, as I am told by people around them every day.

And where am I in all this? Being a bloody fool and working to save my marriage.

This is what happens when we take the Bible out of our homes, schools and society. We have regressed as a society of people without the Biblical values upon which the forefathers established this land, and lamentable our kids, grandkids are the victims of our turning our backs on God.

To all concerned parents I would suggest: Go back to the Godly moral values.

    • Posted By: Fr33dumb @ 10/07/2008 8:05:56 PM

I agree. Only the Bible can teach values we need. Whatever happened to stoning people to death when they worked on Sunday? Or being able to sell your daughter into slavery to pay off your debts? If only more people would follow the great morals of the Bible like these we would be better off. Satan is evil. He deceives people. If only more people would follow our merciful and loving Lord, who flooded the Earth and murdered everything on the planet and created an eternal pit of suffering and damnation for those who disobey. Why can't more people accept his love, instead of following the true evil on this planet?

      • Posted By: agnstheflow @ 10/07/2008 11:47:41 PM

You haven't read or understand the Bible at all, much less anything taught by Christ. If you really read through the Old and New Testament you would understand that slavery was never the will of God....just recognized as the norm by a world of sinful people. In the old testament God ordered the Israelites that if they had to have a slave (they were the only people God talked to but the Israelites were mostly just slaves themselves) the slave had to be released within 7 years unless they choose to stay with you. And they were ordered to treat their slaves well or else let them go. Also..by the standards of freedom and independence they had back then..only working and living by themselves with their families...aren't we slaves today by going to work for other people every day to be able to support ourselves? If you've ever read anything in the Bible at all you must have heard the story where Jesus rescued a woman from being stoned by just stating that "whoever is without sin cast the first stone"?

Don't just make generalizations about the bible as if you know anything about the word of a God you claim to not believe in. If you read the bible with that kind of attitude you won't open your mind to any truth at all. I pray that you don't go to your grave and enter eternity with the same feelings. Everyone has to believe in something because we are spiritual beings. What is your god?

Exodus 21:7 If a man sells his daughter as a female slave, she is not to go free as the male slaves do. 8 ???If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master who designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He does not have authority to sell her to a foreign people because of his unfairness to her. 9 ???If he designates her for his son, he shall deal with her according to the custom of daughters. 10 ???If he takes to himself another woman, he may not reduce her food, her clothing, or her conjugal rights. 11 ???If he will not do these three things for her, then she shall go out for nothing, without payment of money.

          • Posted By: Fr33dumb @ 10/08/2008 1:40:49 AM

Yeah, I must be confused. But, my God? He is certainly not one who would banish his children to burn in Hell for all eternity because they didn't believe in Jesus Christ. There are many people in this world who have murdered, raped, molested children -- some have done all three -- who have found God and asked for forgiveness. Some child molesting murderer will enter Heaven because he has accepted Jesus. How sweet, that the man who spent his life helping people, donating to charity, who never hurt anyone and respected everyone will be burning in Hell forever because he doesn't believe in Jesus, while a mass murderer is in Heaven. Kind of poetic. Like how Satan is the evil of the world, when his greatest crime is deception and thinking he was better than God, while God is "perfect" though he killed hundreds of thousands of people. Do you have ANY IDEA how many times it mentions who should be murdered, smote, burned, destroyed? God was very mad in the Old Testament. These are the morals of the Bible that most Christians don't really like to mention. And yes, God ordered, anyone who works on the Sabbath Day shall die -- it doesn't much matter if a few thousand years later Jesus saved someone from being stoned to death -- what about all those before? God is the biggest mass murderer in the history of writing, there's no denying it, but since he is "perfect" and he only killed "sinners" I guess it doesn't count, right? Ordering the first born to die...very nice touch as well. So don't make generalizations about the bible, either, because there are a lot of good Thou shall not murder morals everyone should follow, but there are also plenty more filled with hate. By the way, I read the bible when I was a christian for many, many years of my life. Don't assume that people who aren't religious are closed minded; especially being as Christians are themselves. Not everyone has to believe in something. We have moved past the stage of pictures on the cave walls and thinking of everything as a matter of "good and evil."
The LORD then gave these further instructions to Moses: 'Tell the people of Israel to keep my Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant between me and you forever. It helps you to remember that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. Yes, keep the Sabbath day, for it is holy. Anyone who desecrates it must die; anyone who works on that day will be cut off from the community. Work six days only, but the seventh day must be a day of total rest. I repeat: Because the LORD considers it a holy day, anyone who works on the Sabbath must be put to death.' (Exodus 31:12-15 NLT)

Yes, but it isn't enough anymore to only have the Biblical values. Kids these days have a hunger for information, and want to know the reasons why those Biblical values work. I'm not talking about "because God says so" or "because it is in the Bible." I'm talking about using our brains, allowing the kids to use theirs, and helping them build the logical foundations to lead them to the correct conclusions.

I'm female. I'm a child of the '80s; grew up in the '80s and '90s.

Growing up, one of my parents was a socially conservative, right-wing, religious, Republican American, and the other was a religious, socially conservative immigrant from the Arab world, also Republican (each has since changed their beliefs in some respect). We were strongly discouraged from Barbies and encouraged toward Lego, art, books, stuffed animals, and My Little Pony (we also developed a love for everything dinosaur or Nintendo). Our parents were fairly horrified at the neighbors who sent their daughters to cheer-leading practice at age five, and made it clear to us they found this wildly inappropriate.

I'm now a progressive, libertarian-leaning atheist and a feminist. But, given all of the absolutely degrading and tragic pitfalls there were for girls growing up when I did--which weren't as bad as the situation for girls growing up now--I am eternally and deeply grateful for how I was raised in this respect. As far as my parents were concerned, I was never, ever, ever allowed to see myself as a sex object. They'd deride and mock advertising, TV shows, and other cultural artifacts which presented this message so strongly and so consistently that I really couldn't take it very seriously, not even away from them at school. The overwhelming message I got from them was that my worth came from my intellect, my ethical choices, and from some fundamental being I had at my core.

For a girl, there is nothing more valuable that this sense of worth. It is a tragedy what America is doing to its daughters today. I don't think that raising girls well requires conservatism or religion, but it is more than a fair trade to have either of those, or both, plus girls who see themselves as fully human. What mainstream Americans let happen to their daughters today instead is like a psychological form of slavery.

After all, how else can you interpret the dehumanization of this, other than with reference to slavery?: " Last year, the American Psychological Association put out a compelling report that described the sexualization of young girls: a process that entails being stripped of all value except the sexual use to which they might be put." Just imagine 'sexual' replaced with 'economic'.

I'm educated, pro-sex, and happily married to a great guy. I'm certain I have a better sex life AND better emotional well-being than every last girl who thinks she's going to be fulfilled by acting like a porn star. I've seen too much pressured, not-exactly-voluntary sexual weirdness on behalf of too many mainstream-raised peers (many of whom started having sex by 13, and eventually progressed, by 16, to sex plus oral with random men at parties or off the internet, and to public sexual acts with other girls in an attempt to please/attract guys) to think that the healthy relationship I have would be very likely if not for how conservatively I was raised.

For those parents out there, when it comes to your children, the danger hours are not 10 pm to 2 a.m. anymore, it is from 3 to 5 pm when both parents aren't home. That is when they will look at porn, or do other things. Keep in touch with what your kids are doing.

In discussing topics such as this I'm always interested in who's buying all this sexual imagery that we're bombarded with, and why.

Conservative moralists always rally about protecting our children from this media or that, about regulating what adults can consume. Yet these same moralists support politics that heartily endorse a free market. Well guess what? In the free market of the United States, sex sells and sells and sells. So who???s buying? If Bratz dolls are so obviously objectionable (and for the record, I DO find them objectionable) then why are they so popular and more importantly so successful?

My own opinion is that regardless of the ???sexual revolution??? of the sixties, sexual repression is still the dominant attitude in America. We???re not supposed to talk about sex, so we have no way to understand it. We stigmatize with adjectives like ???dirty??? and ???filth,??? adding a healthy dose of guilt and shame. But the urges are still there. That repressed sexuality, combined with an instant anonymous outlet a mouse click away has warped our society???s views. We ultimately crave the satisfaction of our base desires, whether we understand them or not, regardless of how we???re not supposed to.

There???s always a supply for every demand.

Parents are purposely turning over PARENTING/SUPERVISION to the schools, government, and other parents. Why? They are persuing their own selfish, often hedonistic, desires. They are role modeling this behavior for their children. Is it any wonder that kids are behaving this way? I mean, if a 12 year old is wearing a thong, who bought it for her? if a 13 year old is having sex its because she has been allowed to date unsupervised at such a young and inappropriate age. Start fining/penalizing the parents and a lot of this will stop. Parents, DON't put cable/internet in your young child's room where they have unfettered access to it. TURN OFF inappropriate programming/music when they come in the room. TALK about your values, right and wrong, and what others are doing and how it negatively impacts them and the rest of society OFTEN. LOOK AT YOURSELF and how you behave, drink, dress, socialize, and KNOW your kids are watching everything.
