Just a "spooky note" over here... given that this garbage tends ot REINFORCE the classical stereotypes of gender roles, is it possible that the Conservatives in this country are DELIBERATELY [covertly] encouraging this Pornification in an attempt to "tun back the clock" to the "good old days" when women "knew" that their places were in the home -- and to be subservient to the men...?

    • Posted By: GeoSapper @ 10/07/2008 6:00:38 PM

Don't think so. Conservatives have been vocally against this for years. Except of course, when they were persoinally involved...

      • Posted By: zaq1 @ 10/07/2008 7:03:41 PM

Very possible, here is an analogy. My grandfather was a bootlegger and a Baptist deacon back in the thirties. He was very out spoken about the evils of liquor from the pulpit and worked hard to ensure his county stayed dry. As long as booze it was illegal in his county his bootlegging profits were high. The conservatives could be running the same type of game with porn; I think it is clear they are doing it with drugs.

I got rid of the idiot box when my son was a year and a half old and I refuse to let him watch it--period. It's that easy. Just turn it off. However, we (as a society) are addicted to it. We need it. We nurture it. We elevate it to godlike importance. We are so dependant on it that we let it decide who our leaders are, what we should consume, and how we should view ourselves and others. If we continue this way, we won't need terrorists to destroy us; we will have done it for them.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/07/2008 6:59:57 PM

Well bad mouth the terrorists all you like sir; and while they have seriously demented religious and world views, i'll tell you what they don't have.... the clap.

  • Posted By: PhxRich @ 10/07/2008 6:58:25 PM

Seriously people ... RELAX!!! it's just sex! It's as natural as eating or breathing, the only difference is we as a society have been forced to make sex a dirty, unmentionable act. Get your heads out of the sand in this country and look around. The only other nations that deem sexual expression as disgusting or immoral are those that are controlled by religious extremists. Think about it people .. we are supposed to be the most advanced nation in the world, yet we still think our kids should be "protected" from everything. Children that are brought up educated about ALL things are much more equipped for a better life than those that are sequestered. If you want your kids "protected" from society ... lock them in the attic or the basement until they're 18 ... then see how well they function in the real world when you let them out.

  • Posted By: GoForItAll @ 10/07/2008 6:57:42 PM

I agree. Sex has become so mainstream with everyone, it's not just young people. Heck, sometimes people will look at you weird just for wanting to be with one person, and not several partners. That is crazy. Everyone should be able to make their own decisions on what they want to do, and should not be told or forced into something that they do not want.

  • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/07/2008 6:56:42 PM

And all the while, kids who take the "abstinence pledge" are over twice as likely to engage in oral and anal sex. What a country!

  • Posted By: MooreonThis @ 10/07/2008 6:56:09 PM

Where was the balance in this article? It's a one sided argument and an old argument at that. Sex has been used to sell things since there were things to sell. And it's not just 70 percent of today's 13 and 14 year-olds who have "accessed sexually explicit content" I remember in junior high oh so many years ago just about everyone in school had "downloaded" porn, we called them dirty magazines back then. This is just another example of how people want to needlessly childproof the world. Try practicing some balanced journalism for once Bennett,

I dont see amish kids dressing like hookers..... i'm just saying.

  • Posted By: olderbutnowiser @ 10/07/2008 6:32:32 PM

If you wanna pop a spontaneous boner over jail bait, watch those Disney H.S. shows,,,,,,,I can't even watch them, without getting "put into my cycle"!!!!

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/07/2008 6:37:27 PM

oh, all of those girls are 16+, theres not anything wrong with looking at them.

      • Posted By: markoff_chaney @ 10/07/2008 6:45:10 PM

17 will still get you 20

        • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/07/2008 6:51:58 PM

Tag line, completely untrue. Legal age of consent in majority of states is 16; not 16 if you're under (blank), just 16, cut and dry.

  • Posted By: berlee @ 10/07/2008 6:51:16 PM

Apollo, Okay first of all you sound like you are a borderline censorship extremist. If you don't like what you see on t.v. simply change the channel, if you don't like what you hear on the radio simply change the station, if you don't like what you see on the billboards turn your head IT IS THAT SIMPLE we do live in a free country where we can make those decisions for ourselves instead on forcing them onto others.

  • Posted By: nomoresnowjobs @ 10/07/2008 6:46:43 PM

Just say no to Bratz! Monitor the computer activity, and talk openly with your sons & daughters. It's that simple.

  • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/07/2008 6:43:58 PM

At least it's tame porn thats seeping into mainstream culture.... just you wait till bukakee gangbangs get media glamorization, then you'll all be really p.o'd.

  • Posted By: ApolloKnowsAll @ 10/07/2008 6:45:41 PM

Stand up and don't worry about being accused of being 'prude'..etc. It is simply wrong to aid and assist this misculture.

Stand up and speak out. Stop what you can. Moral outrage. Walk out of movies and get your money back. Cancel cable...

  • Posted By: saulglomeli @ 10/07/2008 6:42:30 PM

How can you blame TV when alot of parent dont even want to take resposability fortheir own kids? when kids spend more time with nannies than with parents. And wen kids are with parents,

  • Posted By: saulglomeli @ 10/07/2008 6:36:41 PM

Well, dont blame TV. Blame the parents, It seems to me that PARENTS no longer want to be PARENTS (a big percentage of them)They no longer want to experince birth the natural way (as long as there is no danger to either one) they schedule when the baby should come out. The nany spends more time with the kids and they leave in huge houses that kids hav access to all things in house which could be dangerous for a child TV, INTERNET, and Video games just to name a few.........so you tell me whois to blame

    • Posted By: berlee @ 10/07/2008 6:42:17 PM

EXACTLY!! If you are a responsible parent that is aware of what their child is doing, playing, watching etc. then there should be no worries. And if the job is done right, when your child is away from home being exposed to such things which cannot be helped and should not they have the knowledge, tools and outlook to deal with them.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/07/2008 6:38:51 PM

The WB.... god damn Dawson's Creek, it was the Devil i tells you, THE DEVIL!!

  • Posted By: Cavallino_Rapante @ 10/07/2008 6:39:41 PM

The author assumes that sexual pop culture actually leads to sexual activity - this has already been proven false. Teen sex is DOWN everywhere. Teen pregnancy is DOWN everywhere. Just because something seems 'sexy/sexual' to some conservative, middle-aged codger does not mean the rest of society (including the youth) agrees. The rise of the information-age, if anything, has separated people - not brought them closer together. If the author's vision of the present had any accuracy regarding the psychological damage of pop culture, every High School in America would be one non-stop orgy. Its not.

  • Posted By: vrspock @ 10/07/2008 6:03:49 PM

This is why we have pregnant 9-year olds commonplace in school systems these days.

It wasn't what was being played backwards on those songs in the 80's....it's what was being played forwards....as in the lyrics themselves. Now it's even worst in the secular radio market.

Everyone else can embrace this garbage and make a bee-line for hell if they want to, but responsible parents are aware of and have control over what their kids are exposed to at home. Kids of responsible parents are also taught at home how to deal with the garbage they are exposed to at school at the expense of the american tax dollar.

A lot of the younger generation does what they want to as any free-thinking person does....and then deals with the consequences. A lot fo the younger generation is also fed a bunch of lies and inaccuracies and are told there is such a thing as "safe" sex.

Also, porn only gives you a fairy-tale image of sex. As with porn you don't have the awkwardness of body odors or the realization that what seems like a good idea in theory proves detrimental in real life. People then embrace a vain imagining of something over the real thing and continually find themselves disappointed because they cannot find a real experience that meets their virtual expectations.

In other words, they become dillussional.

    • Posted By: Human-Android @ 10/07/2008 6:38:54 PM

As with porn you don't have the awkwardness of body odors ... Yes Mr, Spock, they sure can't compete with the smell of napalm in the morning!
The whole world is sick to death with America's love-affair with violence, our true pronographic export, and unfortunately the biggest proponents of this "culture of death" reside in Washington, D.C on Pennslyvania Avenue.
The hypocracy of the Moal Majority is simply stunning. They put a towel over a semi-nude statue of Liberty (Google John Ashcroft), yet seem to reamain blithely unaware of the appaling pictures of children with their limbs blown off, headless corpses, anguished women in morning - the consequences of our "spreading democracy" with bombs and bullets wherever we damn well feel like it.
I don't go to church anymore because frankly, people like you STINK!
Thankfully, you'll lose in November, and you can take your gutter-dwelling, blood soaked fantasies of redemption through divinely-inspired slaughter back to the caves you popped out from!

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 10/07/2008 6:10:26 PM

Ok, while i get your point of view, pregnant 9yr olds is not commonplace; it may occur, but it is not a common thing.

It has changed significantly since I was younger. Personally, however many lovers someone chooses to be with is completely up to them. Lovers have told many a wonderful tale. Yet, the expression of just body
and body energy just simply ruins the whole lovers with lovers aura. The heart is never shown, the spirit never revealed in all the sexy, sex, shown today. It's so desensitizing. But I think that's what the apathetic wish to
contribute to the spirtless, heartless world of today. Never reveal the beauty of the heart, simply reveal the
pump and grind of the physical energy. It's a crappy outlook and I feel bad for the youth of today who don't have
the right people in their lives telling them what being a lover really is all about. Too bad.

    • Posted By: olderbutnowiser @ 10/07/2008 6:35:35 PM

Hello Mr. Gomez... I am one of those "young people who dont have the right people telling them what being a lover really is all about." How can we meet, you sexual sage, you!!!! grrrrrr.................................

  • Posted By: olderbutnowiser @ 10/07/2008 6:22:43 PM

AS A PARENT, I HAVE A PROPOSED SOLUTION...WHAT IF WE, IN OUR OLD AGED, BALD-HEADEDNESS, VARICOSE VEIN-INESS, FAT BELLY'S HANGING OUT, all dress in this new, sexy attire...??? Would that
repel our kids from dressing this way, and maybe even result in them wanting to wear business suits and
"cover up"... I know I never wanted to dress like my parents...?????

    • Posted By: berlee @ 10/07/2008 6:32:12 PM

That is a good point however I think our maturity and level headedness may prevent us from doing so. And probably our bosses as well, except for the perverted ones that watch too much sex on t.v. :)

  • Posted By: momtomykids @ 10/07/2008 6:31:16 PM

You don't have to be a conservative to think that what is being thrown at our kids in this society as 'acceptable' images and behavior is just plain wrong. It only takes common sense to see how disgusting our society has become, that we have allowed it to become. Children should be protected from being objectified as a sexual consumer not thrown into it. We all know mankind as a whole can be base and disgusting, but that does not give us an excuse to act on it or expose our children to it. There is a right and wrong, there is a moral code that should be acted on...life really isn't full of gray areas. We just say that to make ourselves feel better about how depraved our culture has become.

More elitist, alarmist hoopla about nothing. I remember back in the 80's Tipper Gore and her cronies at the PMRC were convinced KISS and other heavy metal bands were going to "ruin a generation" of kids. A few years ago KISS played the intro to Monday Night Football. Somehow in the interim the world didn't stop turning. Every generation of prudes needs it's bugaboo and apparently porn is this generations heavy metal.

PS - George Bush has screwed more people than Jenna Jameson ever could!

    • Posted By: olderbutnowiser @ 10/07/2008 6:29:29 PM

Lets apply logic.....enjoying KISS made us want to play guitar, in makeup and costume.
enjoying PORN made us want to..........well, you see where I'm going!
