Better porn imagery than violent imagery. In a country that holds its military in god like reverence, it is not porn you should be worrying about, but you will NEVER see a corporate media article about the evils of militarism and how it is destroying American culture. Sex is normal and natural and beneficial, war and violence are not. Maybe we need a new magnet sticker, "Support our adult entertainers, screw the troops". (the pun is intended)

I agree that eliminating -- or seriously limiting TV (there are still a FEW decent items on the "tube") is a very good idea to limit the impact of the "pornification". However, I believe that it is self-deluding to think that this will be sufficient to counter what is going on around us. There are simply too many "impact points". Are you going to no longer let a child go to a store to shop? Are you going to "blindfold" the child from seeing the street signs that are up around us?
I believe that a more "holistic" approach is needed.
    a. Limit Use of the TV and WRITE to studios and producers WHY you are limiting TV and WHAT shows (and commercials) you object to. In addition to preventing the "brainwashing", you will also have the chance to teach the kids something else VERY important: the ability to discriminate between the good and the bad.
    b. Be prepared to boycott products that "push" inappropriate themes -- evn if the product, itself, appears innocuous. If a vendor has been using inappropriate commercials / advertising signs / etc. to sell the product -- then perhaps, it is time fo that endor to learn that he or she risks LOSING consumers that way. Similarly, if a vendor comes out with a line such as the Bratz line -- not buying ANYTHING by that vendor just might serve as wake-up call.
    c. Once upon a time the FCC enforced MEANINGFUL standards for children's programming (anyone remember Captain Kangaroo). Then, (under a Republican Administration, I believe) these standards were dumbed down / destroyed -- and the networks no longer had any reason to produce decent Children's programming (though I guess you can pay for something on cable). Maybe it is time to push (this IS an election year, after all) for the FCC to act responsibly. Instead of getting all bent out of shape over a "wardrobe malfunction", how about reinstituting REAL standards for children's (and daytime) programming? Why SHOULD people have to pay for quality children's programming when there is no reason why you can not have that on the "public" airwaves? to put it another way, is the FCC contributing to the Pornificaiton of America? If so, can the FCC be pressured to reverse this trend. I am NOT in favor of censorship or "Hayes Codes" -- but simply common sense as to WHEN material not appropriate for children should be aired. It is very nice ot have a V-chip (to BLOCK stuff) but it is even better when the quality is also there.
d.As the children grow up, be prepared to articulate how "gross" and decadent this pornification actually is. I am not referring just to the [potential] obscenity involved but rather that it is disgusting even if it is NOT [technically] obscene. That this cheapens women AND men....

I figured out how to cure my kids interest in anything sexual.... my wife and I have intercourse in the living room in the evening time, as my kids attempt to watch television......Now they are thoroughly disgusted with the very idea of sex........kinda like the old "if you smoked one cigarette, I'll make you smoke a whole pack."

If you haven't seen the Oct. 2008, issue of the AWAKE magazine, published by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, you owe it to yourself to pick one up. I did and it is amazing information especially for parents who want to keep their kids free from porn contact on the internet via home computers, PDAs, cell phones, etc. If you are a parent that cares, this is a must read!

Welcome to the liberal agenda, endorsed by the media and far too many college professors. Anyone paying attetion to whats going on in this society has seen this kind of thing coming for the last 20 years. It was the Media and liberal college professors who legitimized homosexuality. Now it's the porn industry's turn and they have the same willing accomplices. This kind of nonsense would have been scandalous 40 years ago. Now it's being legitimized. Next on the agenda will be the Rene Guyon Society and their advocacy of sex with children. Give society ten or twenty years to adjust to these new dimensions of liberalism(homosexuality and porn) and the next step will be to legitimize sex with children. Not possible you say? That's what Americans would have said about the acceptance of homosexuality and porn 40 years ago! For a Hedonistic society, it's just a matter of time. Hedonism and money are two of the most central themes in todays America. It's not the Country I was raised in anymore and I never thought it would end up like this.

<sigh>....I get so tired of hearing crap like this. I've heard it my whole life. Back in the 80's the backwards rock music was going to turn your kids into devil worshipers. The good news is that people like this get old and get Alzheimers and die and their screwy "hide everyone in the closet" ideas die with them. Then the younger generation does what it wants to anyway. Good luck with the rest of your life, old man.

its all well and good to remove tv from a kids life but it isolates them from the rest of their friends and classmates and if your going to take away the tv prolly should the computer also. no matter what you do your children are going to be exposed to this kind of thing if not at your house then at one of their friends or at school you cant lock them in a box and filter everything they see or hear and even if you do find a way to moniter everything your child see's or hears their just going to be in for that much more of a culture shock when they move out and join the rest of the world best to introduce it on your terms and talk to them i say explaining what you think is wrong with it. having said that i love to watch porn its been around for ages and theirs no way its going anywhere nor should it sex is natural dont make it taboo and it wont be a issue.

Bravo! Children and their parents need to hear and then understand that the sexual
permissive culture of America today is threatening the very morales that this country's
forefathers founded this nation on. According to our federal government's own
statistics 1 in every 5 female girls under the age of 18 will become pregnant. In addition
thousands wil suffer monthly from secually transmitted diseases, often AIDS. Little boys and
girls are constantly bombarded with sexual suggested toys, advertisments, movies and television. Do we really want the future of our nation placed into the hands of adults who are incapable of having high standards and morale goals? No! Thank you for your article although
judging by the response of so many perverts I wonder if it is perhaps too late to change
the prevailing beliefs of so many lost souls.

The author in this piece has very valid point, advertising toys, games, clothes even music cd's is played up by some type of sexual overtone. It's sad when my 11 year old daughter said at the age of 5 that she wanted to dance on a pole. And I don't even let her watch MTV or Spongebob. So yes I do agree with the sugestion that our society is becoming more and more sexualized. And for those who don't have kids, may be it's harder for you to recognise, because you think of this as normal advertising. Like the saying goes"SEX SELLS" is just really a hard pill to swallow, todays youth is tomarrow's future. jnnfr0447@aol.com

it's not as easy as saying turn off your TV or radio. No one lives in a bubble and our kids aren't always under our supervision. Everyone has friends and are subjected to this filth at some point unless you live on some other planet. It is frightening were this is all headed. It worries me. Kids have so much trouble dealing with the onslaught of their hormones and NOW they are bombarded with this stuff.

It really bothers me when having smple everyday conversations with others, even the most innocent references are twisted into some filthy sexual context, especially by men. Everone's minds are now in the gutters. I also see why so many women are single - middle-aged males are consumed by internet port and most middle-aged females have not been psyched into being treated as just the sex toys that the youger generation is buying into.

      WOW...someone got dumped...

  • Posted By: FutureSoylentGreen @ 10/07/2008 5:00:30 PM

So people who've worked in the sex industry aren't supposed to cross into the mainstream culture? and just where does the Bratz Pony figure into a sudden epiphany that American culture is being sucked into the black hole of porn? That's just the first of many leaps of rationalization made by this article.
In fact, this article itself might be the best claim for pornification. Lots of sexual talk, weak writing and almost no genuine worth.

  • Posted By: jnnfr0447 @ 10/07/2008 4:37:52 PM

My daughter once told me she wanted to dance on a pole when she grew up. Now I think that has to do with what she was watching and what type of behavior she was exposed to. SEX SELLS everyone knows how more and more sexulized our nation has become. The only difference is before it wasn't so in your face. The fact is when I was in High school my computer teacher asked me for a table dance. So, I am terrified if that happened ten years ago what can I expect from my daughter's teachers? And yes I did the table dance, so that makes me even more afraid, even though I was in high school, I was still a minor. And the position of trust that teachers hold is one priviledge that shouldn't be abused.

like mother, like daughter huh? maybe you chouldnt let your kids watch famous stars in r rated sexual movies, or buy them bratz dolls and barbies, and let them watch that skank Hannah Montana...i get so tired of hearing you all bitch and moan about situations that you create...you make all these problems on your own, sure these things are advertised on tv/movie/games...but who chooses to watch? who chooses to buy? get over yourself...and and a last not...before the 21st century we were marrying off childeren at the ages of 12/13...people were having childeren of they're own at that age....you think all this is some how new?? I've got a great idea, if you don't like what is on your tv you should get rid of it. What a novel idea. 6 years ago I rid my life of the propaganda box and you know what, my children have no idea how disgusting mtv is, they also are not brainwashed by any conservative or liberal views. I highly recommend this to any of you fools who complain about what you see. The only person who controls what you or your children see is you.
It is probably hard for many of your programmed minds to grasp. "How will spend are time?" I can already hear you saying. I wonder how people spent there time before there was a TV in every corner of every house. I'm willing to bet they had some real conversations and got to know each other instead of wasting there lives away watching out for the next big thing on mtv or listening to one sided political views on ANY news channel-not just Fox. Every channel is owned by some fat, rich, goon who's only goal in life is to convince you to give him more of your money.
Americans are idiots (including myself) brainwashed by a life of being baby sat by the boob tube and I feel sorry for any of you goons that pay a cable bill because you have no idea what life is really about. Throw the stupid thing out the window, the sooner the better. Don't worry, you'll thanks me later. Not only will you have more money each month to spend with your family but your living room will be for living, not for wasting your life.
