I think it's very amusing. Sometimes it wonderful to be fanciful.

Megan Smolenyak could have simply gone to www.angelfire.com/realm3/ruvignyplus/041.html, where Paul Emery Washington is explicitly described as the heir male of George Washington, and save herself a lot of trouble.

"..and perhaps the only man in history who turned down the position of monarch."

Sometimes the ignorance of journalists is mind numbing. Oliver Cromwell turned down the offer to be monarch.after the English civil war (two and a half centuries before the American revolution)

I was thinking the same thing Richard64. Especially with the easy access to information and therefore the easy ability to check facts that the internet offers, as well as all the spellchekers that most writing programs have now, there should be extremely few factual errors or spelling errors in any article. But it seems that these folks have not been taught how to do that checking, thereby giving us article after article of incorrect information and incorrectly spelled words. That's why it is a good thing to trust in the saying, "don't believe everything you read."

Who said they checked facts? :O

"Except that Paul Emery Washington is a direct descendant of George Washington, our nation's first president and perhaps the only man in history who turned down the position of monarch."
This is an incorrect statement. Paul Emery Washington could NOT be a direct descendant of George Washington, as George Washington had no legitimate children of his own. Paul Emery Washington is a direct descendant of George Washington's brother, and therefore a COLLATERAL descendant of George Washington.

Hawaii actually has the last monarchy in America. We have the only royal palace (Iolani Palace) on US soil, which was built by King Kalakaua in the late 1800's. There are also many Hawaiians today who claim to be direct decendents of the Kamehameha monarchy. There are also many protest groups who have stormed Iolani Palace in recent years to lay claim as the official Hawaiian monarchy today. The most recent happened just a month ago. I believe there are a couple of Hawaii sovereignty groups that claimed to have the official King and Queen of Hawaii.

This article was obviously done in fun. I've spent an hour reading the news and ended with a little lightheartedness. You people are just plain mean!

hey, "whocares2008, FYI while you are criticizing others please note your INCORRECT use of the word "myriad". Although you have made a common mistake, the word "myriad" means "many" and must be used that way grammatically. Therefore, as it would be bad grammer to say "the MANY of ways" (as your post below says "...the MYRIAD of ways"). The correct way would be to say, "...the MYRIAD ways" and leave out the word "of". So perhaps you can reflect on some of the ways YOU are deficient. Thanks, and HAVE A NICE DAY!

Actually George Washington was not childless. One of his children was West Ford who founded the area called Gum Springs in Alexandria with land he inherited from his father through an uncle. Of course back then no upstanding gentelman would claim an out-of-wedlock child. George Washington was a rarity although he could not give West his name he obviously cared deeply for his son. http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=4258

With the exception of the person below me, you people are severely mentally deficient. 'Sensationalism'? What did you learn that word this morning on your 'word of the day calendar' and decide this was a good place to use it? This is simply an article for entertainment purposes taken from research that was simply done in fun really. And the idiot who called Obama 'Osama'....I'm pretty sure I don't need to point out the myriad of ways in which you must be deficient.

to kaythegardner, read the article agian and you will see that it says: are fifth-generation descendants of George's oldest brother, Samuel.

you people are all severely mentally challenged. 'sensationalism'? this is a fluff article based on a history project that ancestry.com decided to do just for fun...and the idiot who referred to obama as 'osama'...is there even really any need for me to point out how obviously deficient you are?

you have to actually read the article to see that the line of succession ran to washingtons brother... come on people, if you are going to try to be clever and complain then pay attention.

Terrible Article, I just wasted the last couple minutes of my life. Ever here of the butterfly effect, there is no possible way that Paul Washington would even be around today if his family would have been monarchy. The decisions made by Washington's family would be completely skewed from the life they lived. They would have remained on the East Coast, not Texas, married completely different people, Government positions would have been made differently, hell, I wouldn't be here today if George Washington would have been King.

  • Posted By: no-american @ 10/08/2008 3:40:16 PM

It should not sound so strange......King Osama is about to take over and turn this into a socialist country. Too close of a comparison for comfort! Bend over and kiss democracy goodby!

If George Washington was childless, then how is this family a direct descendant of the First President???

With columnists like these who twist the basic meaning of common words to fit their need for sensationalism, then how can any info be trusted???

Where was the human editor of this website???
