    George Washington didn't have children of his own, he and martha raised her son and daughter and their grandchildren. So in that light we just don't know who would have taken the thrown when he died. But he didn't choose the Monarchy so I see no reason to announce that the Washington(Custis line declaring the could have been kings. That is kind of like " If the dog didn't stop to ____ he would have caught the rabbit."

    I always have said: Many Americans don't appreciate what they have. Do you think if Goerge Washington would have proclamed himself king, the Unite States still would be on the map? This country is strong because the legacy from the founder fathers, this country works better than anyogher in the world becasue its design. It was designed using democracy as a foundation. There are a lot of things many americans have forgotten and that is why sometimes the system seems to struggle but as Thomas Jefferson said (I don't remember exactly his words but this is his message): those abnormalities are part of democracy to keep it going and evolving.     Alexandra, where is moral compass coming from if it does not come from God, and if you cannot see the difference between Iran and the USA and its leaders and the wonderful "sensible" country you live in then I think you are not sure what you are saying really, just mimicing and complaining about nonsense while in the midst of the most free society the world has ever known. And Christians have a right to their belifs without having the liberal mindset that all things are potentially true when in fact that cannot be logically sound. we look back on life and history see the mistakes and learn what works, but we have groups of people which I would say are the majority that think freedom is destroy your "self" for the sake of rights , despite who they hurt, despite if it keeps anyone safe, and all in the name of some righteous card drawn up out of some moral cosmic dust that has no origin from God at all. Humanism is what causes much of the dissent in America and almost desroyed Europe totally, that battle is still going on , just watch as Chrisitianity becomes less in Europe and Islam becomes more and gets more traction. You will see why Americans that resist too much power have a different God than that of Islam and Hindu and Buddhism and all the false gods of the world.

    Alot of good yet slightly off topic discussion spurred by this article. I have to say that the article itself is pretty trivial, but the responses have ranged from enlightening (regards to the elitism comment posted by NelsonRA) to infuriating (servant 43's ridiculously zealotic comment about religion in government... where it has no place). Clearly I am bias and I know that this person and his/her idiotic and irrelevant comment are not representative of all those who share in similar beliefs, but this kind of blind rhetoric is ridiculous. I think that in these discussions we find the central issues that have been plaguing America lately and even more so with the electoral campaigns in full swing. One section of another post hit the nail on the head... American leadership in any form, official or unofficial (behind the scenes), has become its own world. A world of individuals entrenched in wealth, corporate board rooms and connections to power that they have the power to do relatively anything in itself is potentially dangerous. Having these people so cut off from the lives of the "average" people is far far worse. If you ask me, religion, entertainment, consumerism are all methods of manipulation (or are being used as such) that serve the interests of the elite. If you look around you you might notice that people are getting dumber. Sure alot more of us can read... badly at that, but look at people's goals, their interests. I do not think it is normal for young children to be brainwashed by radical fundamentist evangelical groups (that are just as bad as any islamic fundamentalists), I don't think it is normal for millions to suffer crippling financial situations because a couple executives made millions if not billions of the sub prime mortgage crisis and I sure as heck don't think it is normal to see 4000 celebrity magazines on a shelf and of the 6 news magazines not one of them is reporting any of the downright scandalous actions of the Wealthy and the Powerful.

    Recap: You're a tool, I'm a tool... we are all tools to those making the real decisions. They are only ever going to make decisions for themselves and in the meantime 3 quarters of the population are worried about Angelina and Brad, going out to the club, or aggressively spreading their religion to the detriment of diversity and general courtesy. The world is becoming a sad place and we are all to blame. If you do nothing else at all. Read, get informed and vote!!!

    The economy is in the toilet, we're in the middle of one of the most exciting presidential elections ever, fighting a war we don't believe in and this is what you guys write about? The notion of George Washington as king is so ridiculous and far fetched that it sounds like something that a bunch of stoners came up with while sitting around the table late at night. Furthermore, as a poitical science major, I am certain that there was never any chance that our country was going to be a monarchy. People were frustrated after the Revolutionary War, undoubtedly, but we fought the war as a revolt against tyranny.
    It is no wonder that people don't know enough about our history. Be more responsible in your reporting....You idiots.

      You are right. George Washington never had any children of his own. PAUL EMORY WASHINGTON is a descendant of one of Gorge Washington's brothers, as described in the article.

    The only reason George Washington became the president was because he was very popular among the public and at the time, the president was more of a publicity agent for the rest of the government. If a monarch had been chosen, it probably would have been someone who had a bigger role in shaping the government, like Madison or Hamilton.

      also, you know that sweet yellow corn that everybody enjoys at the BBQ's , like on the 4th of July, well Natives used cross breeding to create that corn. They figured out on their own, before european contact, that if they bred certain strains of corn they could create a more viable food source. obviously, they didn't need the British to teach them to be farmers.

      Women had more rights in Native American Nations before colonizers arrived. Opinions from both men and women was important for each nation, and in most cases decisions were never made until the women were also consulted. Yes, in theory women are equal to men in present times but that happened with much fight. So the freedom of speech that I now enjoy, as a women, is no thanks to the white man becays

      Actually, I would have more freedoms had colonizers never arrived in these Lands. The Majority of Native Cultures believed that women were equal to men, some even believed that a woman's opinion was more important than a mans. Also, The whole slavery thing, every "race" on the planet has held slaves at one time or another in their history, why then is this so different? Because we chose to change our ways and free our slaves and live side by side with them as brothers and sisters, instead of trying to exterminate them? We chose to do something amazing and we have been persecuted for it ever since.     How closely related is Mr. Emery to Idi Amin? To Karl Rove? What deep inferences could be made from that? He's probably more closely related to my first wifes second ex-husband Joe-Nine-Whiskey.     Oh by the way, the phrase "one nation under God" or "In god we trust" was only added to the American lexicon in the 1950's as a way of telling the Sovet Union we were "god fearing" Americans and they were "Godless" communists.           That is true at the moment, but as I stated before the future is going towards globalism. "White" features are recessive traits. With technology making the world relatively smaller & smaller over enough generations the "white" features will eventually phase themselves out. Don't get defensive, this will take many generations but it is eventually going to happen.

      Superior? in what way? how were the europeans better as humans than the native americans who were here before us? The only thing our european ancestors had was superior technology, that doesn't really make them better in any realy way. if the roles were switched and the Americans had invaded europe when we were at an earlier level of technology do you think that the outcome would have been different?

      I would like to make one small point. Europe had readily available resources in a very tameable enviroment and has been populated for several thosand years. Hundreds if not thousands of different cultures have come and gone through it's history, each one learning from the others competing for survival.
      Creating a technologicly superior society. Not a racialy superior one. If you want to read up on why different societies overcame others read Jared Diamonds Gun's, Germs, and Steel A brief history of the human race.

    Interesting yet pointless article since Washington and the other founding fathers would have never agreed to a monarchy. What would have been the point to come from a monarchy in England - start a revolution to free oursevles from a monarchy and go back to a monarchy! Doesn't make any sense, but nice filler.

It is really a subtle (although not really ) way for Newsweek to continue to stir up racial tensions via their articles . . . now that Obamas background of all of his radical, liberal, anti-american friends, felons, terrorists, etc. are being discussed to a fuller degree now as we near the GE. THAT is the purpose of this transparent article. Look for more race-conscious articles moving forward as Obama gets vetted about his FRIENDS by some of the press and in ads to show him as the character (with lack of character and judgment and experience and accomplishments) for which he really represents.

    That said, it must also be noted that MOST of our US presidents are RELATED! And related TO THE ENGLISH ROYAL FAMILY.....JUST AS GEORGE WASHINGTON WAS! This is an ASTOUNDING fact... but it is the TRUTH! Probably they are not all DIRECT descendants of President George Washington, as Paul Washington is....but they are close enough! In fact, RONALD REGAN, (the most closely related of our recent Preidents), was SO closely related to the English Royal Family, that Queen Elizabeth II inviteed him, (and ONLY him), to visit her at Buckingham Palace!

    It's all decided at secret meetings. THE BILDERBERG GROUP, and meetings of the BOHEMIAN GROVE, (usually held in California!). THEY decide who will be President,, and who will be King. It's my guess that they were SO scared at the close call, (ALMOST making Al Gore the President,), that they've decided that the Democratic Candidate this time iwll be a Blac Man. (No matter how good a President Obama would be, the majority of the p0eople in this country are NOT ready for a Black Man to be President.)
