The calmer Obama became the angrier McCain became. I still don't see McCain's logic, I guess he believed his strategists and felt that if you took Obama away from the podium he would be lost (some bloggers felt the same way). Townhall meetings really don't give the candidates time to elaborate on ANYTHING. We wanted to hear more and the candidates were being cut off MID SENTENCE.

Unfortunately for McCain, the cameras were not kind to him. The microphones picked up the heavy breathing as he spoke. The need for McCain to support himself also didn't help.his image. Face it he is 72 and it SHOWS.

When you are behind, WHY on earth would you leave right away? Those are votes you are leaving on the table. How can you call Obama green and forget the fundamentals?. After 26 years, no one should have to tell you that the people in the audience will be voting. They will remember and talk to their friends of the man who took the TIME to speak to them when they are scared about the economy and the one had better things to do than to connect with the voters. Obama apparently naturally understands people and leadership. After 26 years if you still think your record speaks for itself, you'll never get it. If you think looking presidential is not having to look into the eyes of your fellow Americans after the debate to assure them that you ARE the man for the job, you'll never get it. Look at us, not Putin, and tell us what you see, it is a four letter word FEAR. Fear to the point where we don't care about the republican exaggerations of Wright, Ayers, Raines, Rezko, or ACORN, We care about our money, jobs and our homes. If you STILL don't get it, you should go back to Congress.and think about for 4 years.

It's about real FEARS not republican SMEARS!

blackcourt writes: "Comment: She has an 80% approval rating as the Governor of Alaska. Obama and his fellow Democrats in congress have an approval rating of 13%"

That was "before" being nominated as VP, check out her approval rating in Alaska since she's become the wicked witch of Wallisa, and the first ever to hold office while running for the VP or President of the USA and ignore a valid, legal subpeona - sorry, America's on to the Repugnicans gimmicks, shenanigans, and all out mockery of the legal system only for their own protection and benefit - go away!!!

IL thought Sen, Obama handled himself very well. I also thought Tom Brokaw was favoring Sen. McCain. He said thank you Sen. McCain several times I(I lost count) but never said that once too Sen. Obama except when closing the debate and he thanked them both for their participation.

I'm sure John McCain did feel more comfortable with a podium. He's what---72? Most people that age would like to have something to lean on now and then, plus his walking around is probably more comfortable for him than just standing still. I know it is for me, and I'm only 62. That doesn't mean he is aggitated or has pent-up energy--just easier to walk than stand still. But he can still use his brain and knowledge to be the president.

Neither of these candidates are going to be able to do what they want to do because of the lack of government oversight of the greed on wallstreet. So everyone is going to have to participate and get out into your community and do something yourself. Stop complaining into your computers and be part of the solution. What can you do for your communtiy?

right on...another INTELLIGENT and INFORMED voter...thats what this country needs...

McCain was sounding like a sales guy at an exhibition, wavering from topics to topics. Obama was cool, calm, and collective.

This is an election year, so we can pick the candidate that wants more regulation and more oversight. After we vote, then we can go out in the community for the next 4 years.

Gore would have won if they could have found the votes that were tossed over in the Gulf of Mexico. They also didn't find the votes in the warehouses until it was too late.

For all the bad ACORN have been accused of, IF they can just release the bad apples and blow the whistle on any republicans tampering with the votes they can get a pass. i'm just getting the feeling that the republicans need ACORN out of the way, so they will get enough breathing space to repeat 2000 or at least slow voting efforts. I feel it's a premptive tactic against the democrats because I can't see how McCain can win now without cheating. If Bush hadn't cheated in 2000 (allegedly) people would not have been watching the voting places as closely today..

Democrats as well vote early because you know where the BROKEN machines will be on November 4th. .

I think at this point, anyone paying attention has heard enough about the candidates' stances on the economy and foreign affairs. Obama might have well as been reading his transcript from the previous debate. I guess at this point playing it safe is a good political strategy, but really not all that inspiring. If the next debate doesn't address some other topics of interest like our childrens' education, abortion and immigration I think we can all declare that the liberal media won their first presidential election. Congrats to Brokaw for doing such a fine job "filtering" the questions. Anyone who says Brokaw is unbias, probably also thinks O'Reilly is unbiased. To all the socialists out there (oops, sorry, I mean "progressives"), you can say good bye to the capitalist incentive and personal freedoms that established this country as the financial superpower that IT STILL IS. I think Mrs. Obama summed it up best when she said (and I paraphrase), that the average American doesn't want the whole pie, they are happy with just their slice. Really?? Either she's calling us lazy or stupid, I haven't figured out which one yet. Easily said from a woman with an Ivy League education, earning over $300k/year, and currently campaigning to be the First Lady. If you pick apart the Obama's position on almost everything you will see it either signifigantly changes from week to week (off shore drilling, troop surge, Russia/Georgia) or it simply doesn't apply to the times (tax policy). The ONLY point I am willing to conceed to Obama is his health care plan, but even then until a candidate recognizes that it's a demand problem and not a supply problem, we won't have a workable solution to our health care situation (soon to be crisis).

Read up on the Born Alive fiasco and you will see that he bold-faced lied to the American people. Then tell me why the media flat out ignored this topic, not from an abortion stand point from from one of character and EXTEREME liberalism. This is a case in point of jusy how much Obama trusts the media not to run with anything that would condemn him. The same people who are angry with their government (myself included) should be equally as angered by the media's decision to HIDE THE TRUTH from us. And then you complain about how McCain is "desperate" and "angry"...hey, wake up, someone has to say it if the media refuses to. Then ask yourself one last question...not why was Obama interested in working with Ayers, but why Ayers was interested in working with Obama. Let freedom ring and GOD bless this great county on mine.

You really do interpret things very negatively. You're one of those "can't talk to" "they all suck" horrible people aren't you?

      • Posted By: Abots22 @ 10/08/2008 12:30:03 PM

Please do talk some sense in me. Tell me why voting against requiring medical care for a failed abortion (aka child) is not exteme liberalism. Oh right, the language was different in the federal version of the bill and had the it been the same as the one at the state level he would have voted for it. Guess what...it was. Obama chaired a committee of 10 people to change the language so that it was IDENTICAL, and then proceeded to vote against it anyway. If this isn't true then why did the Obama campaign issue an apology on the topic? (http://www.nysun.com/national/obama-facing-attacks-from-all-sides-over-abortion/84059/). Maybe he made a mistake, but the fact remains that he would still rather protect Roe vs Wade instead of aiding a living child. Pelosi, Clinton, and Kennedy even voted to support this bill.

Thanks to the government's lack of oversight, neither candidate is going to be able to do what they would like to do to help the country. All of us is going to have to step up and participate instead of just sitting around your computer and compalining. Look at yourself and ask what you can do for the solution? What can you do to help in your community? Go out and get involved.

At this point I believe both of these guys are just blowing smoke. They are like the two deck hands on the Titantic fighting about how to arrange the furniture. Neither is willing to admit that what they have promised for the last 2 years is most likely never going to happen. Our country is in real trouble and these two clowns are either in total denial or just plain stupid. I have supported McCain only because I do not care for Obama. But at this point I am not sure why either would want the job. To many Americans are counting on the Pres. to solve all their problems and we all know that is not going to happen. When these fools realise this I believe there is going to be real trouble in our country. People are going to get a little crazy!

so sad you think that a Christian leader will save this country...and what was Bush?!?!?! believe it or not it isn't about god it is about politics...maybe you should take an economy class and learn a little...don't remember ever hearing or reading anything about god

    • Posted By: Abots22 @ 10/08/2008 10:20:25 AM

Kate, I am a Christian with an economics degree. Why do you think we are in the financial crisis we are in? Here is my overly-simplistic answer, we have built our economy on debt. The Bible says this is exactly what NOT to do. We have allowed greed to go unchecked. The Bible also says something about this as well. I do not profess to know the heart of any man, but I do know that if this country doesn't return to the Godly principles IT WAS FOUNDED ON, then I am certain we will continue to experience one crisis after another. Do you know what the first Supreme Court did when first convened? They prayed....for 3 hours. "In God We Trust" is on every dollar bill we print. You may not agree with these principles, but you simply cannot argue that our country wasn't founded on them. Then look at what has happened in our recent history. We have slowly removed God from the day to day activities of this country. Coinsidence? Or, cause and effect?

I follow God and therefore cannot vote for hate

I follow God and there fore HAVE to vote for freedom

I follow God and therefore pray for God's will to guide this election

And that cannot be Chaos McCain & 6-Pack Palin -- God is not that small or that stupid

        • Posted By: chehil @ 10/08/2008 12:10:27 PM

I am so glad someone has finally acknowledged that God should have a place in these matters. It is too often that God is left out of matters that concerns ALL HIS POPLES. Actually this started when the United States Supreme Court gave way in the Brown vs Board of Education. That is to allow Blacks/Whites to attend school together, something had to be given up. The Supreme Court hit us at the heart, by taking praying out of schools. As a result of that , the Devil was allowed in and because many homes do not have prayer lift, the school was just about the only place most children did. This created the separation of Church and State. If you're going to spend, use, and at time abuse money that bears God's name, surely one should be able to put Him first and keep Him in everything you do. Not just when you are in danger.

        • Posted By: Abots22 @ 10/08/2008 11:06:05 AM

Palin saying "He's [Obama] not one of us and inciting the crowd to yell 'terrorist' and 'kill him' -- if that's not enough hate for you how about McCain referring to Obama as 'that one'

how about if you back up what is right with McCain & Palin -- where is the love and stability and policy from these two?

Trying to find out just WHO Obama really is ..."is like trying to nail jello to the wall." He is a communist plant.

    • Posted By: olderwiser @ 10/08/2008 10:14:57 AM

When you use the word "communist", you refer to a government which owns the means of production, a socialist system. The present republican administration has just presided over the government takeover of a failed economic system in a purely socialistic scheme, to wit: ownership of almost a trillion dollars worth of our credit system, while implying that more might have to be expended. Bush recommended this. Hence, he is a communist plant. Logic wins on this. Good luck with your paranoia.

      • Posted By: izme @ 10/08/2008 10:30:12 AM

We all agree that it was Fannie Mae and Freedie Mac that caused the financial melt down. Let's see, Obama, in his short time in office, received the second most money from Fannie Mae And Johnson, who just happens to be on his VP search team, was the CEO for Fannie Mae. It was ALL set up to crash our economy!!
Bush had no other recourse in order to save our economy. Obama is a snake in the grass.

        • Posted By: fccFH @ 10/08/2008 12:05:03 PM

Actually we do not all agree. If that is your understanding, then you truly do not have a strong grasp of how our economy works, how the financial sector works, and most of all, the history of what got us into this mess. Fannie and Freddie are without question a large factor of the melt down, but when major Wall Street firms and local small banks began making investments and loans that had no securitization and that had no oversight (both of which were allowed in a completely unregulated atmosphere, the one Bush set and the one McCain supported) we were thrust into the situation we now find ourselves. When Bush told everyone that the economy will be just fine, keep shopping, well he missed one major factor- Americans could not afford to shop, so they borrowed. But to place the blame solely on the general public is not completely fair; you see without oversight, which would have prohibited banks from lending to any average Joe Six Pack, greedy banks gave out all the money they could on completely insane terms. And when America defaulted so did the banks. So Bush has failed on a multiple occasions and totally destroyed our economy. But maybe I am missing something, please explain to me how this has nothing to do with Bush, and how he saved us, because last I checked, our economy is still in the dump.

If the truth must be told Davis , McCains campiagn manager owns a firm in Arlington VA that recieved Fannie and Freddie Monies until July 2008, Davis himself was also recieving 30,000 a month until July 2008. Before you throw stones look at the facts.

      • Posted By: olderwiser @ 10/08/2008 10:21:05 AM

And izme, while you are attempting to do something so bizarre as nailing jello to a wall, the man to whom you refer is Barack Obama, a man who is about to become president of your country, if you are an American. The idiotic idea that no one knows who he is probably belongs in the annals of last ditch efforts to pull a losing campaign out of the mud, it being among the stupidest of all questions in that hopeless bag of dirt.

Well, at least I have not tried to nail jello to a wall, so possibly I could claim to be what the name says, "maybe a tad wiser".

    • Posted By: fccFH @ 10/08/2008 11:10:36 AM

Wow, you did, you did what McCain could not do- McCain should have called you before this debate, then he would have been able to nail Obama down. I usually do not respond to such inept and immature remarks, but this one actually made me laugh. Do you every try to put your own words in McCains mouth before you type them? If McCain were to call Obama a communist plant on national TV in front of millions of people, here is what the result would be- it would be a done deal, Obama would win. First McCain will be chided for making such an incoherent, senseless statement, it would prove that his old-aged mind has finally crapped out, and it would also show the side of McCain, the angry, bitter, short thinking side, that his campaign has desperately tried to hide. Then McCain would be shot down for making a claim against Obama that even the McCain camp would not know how to back up. A communist plant- they would not be able to show him a communist; and a plant, I would not even know where to draw any parallels. If you are going to try to convince people that McCain is the better candidate, I would first try to show yourself as someone worth listening to. That was pretty sad.

  • Posted By: trewblue @ 10/08/2008 8:13:46 AM

As usual, Richard's analysis was right on. Once again, Obama displayed the characteristics Americans' desparately need in their next president.. He was articulate, calm under pressure, and showed a clear mastery of the issues that face us both domestically and abroad. McCain, on the other hand, continued to demonstrate erratic behavior, an inability to articulate any specifics of his policies (just saying that he knows how to fix the problems doesn't pursuade me that he actually does...as if I should bet on the come that he and the Republican party actually do get it after years of proof that they don't), and carries himself like an angry, out-of-touch old man. McCain's lack of judgement on many key issues was once again called out without any reasonable rebuttal. Finally, while I'm glad that McCain didn't bring up the dispicable negative crap that his running mate is spewing at every opportunity, it tells me a great deal about this man...that he lacks integrity and honor (yes, those qualities he thinks are inherent just because of his POW experience); for if he actually believed that crap, that he would have brought them up to Obama's face and challenge him publicly to defend himself.

OR how about her tax records? These elitists put all the money in her accounts so they can hide from the public.

Or do you not care about that?

Where's the non-stop coverage of Palin's long-term relationship with her witch doctor pastor? Where's the non-stop coverage of Palin's husband's belonging to the Alaskan succession group and it's wacko leader? Where's the non-stop coverage of the multitude of gaffs that McCain has had throughout his candidacy? Where's the non-stop coverage of McCain's involvement in the World League for Freedom and Democracy? Where's the non-stop coverage of the fact that the Republican party is attempting to squash the Alaskan inquiry into Palin's abuse of power...something began well before her VP selection so it can't be blamed on the Democrats? I can go on and on about how McCain has gotten a free ride from the media for far too long. Check your facts before making such ludicrous allegations!

        - Committed felonies to subvert our Democratic Process
        - Advocated kidnapping American citizens to protect the Republican Party Convention

        - Recently instructed his listeners to "shoot at the face and heads of Federal Law Enforcement officals to 'ensure they get a kill shot', and not just hit the bullet-proof vest
        - Orchestrated WaterGate Break-in
        - break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers.
        - plotted to murder journalist Jack Anderson
        - plotting with a ???gangland figure??? to murder Howard Hunt.

If Palin is so savy when it comes to image and camera angles, why after her national debate did she pawn off her handicapped infant to a child who could barely hold up the baby's head? That little boy clearly has some neurological deficits - he belonged with an adult., not one of her younger children.

If she doesn't understand how to take care of a handicapped child, I don't think she understands the economy or foreign policy.

Or even image and camera angles.

ansd C. MacLean has anyone noticed her oldest child -- her high school daughter -- is pregnant -- while mom is out shoving abstinence down everyone elses' throats? she is no kind of mother "in my world" which brings me to another point -- Palin is always saying "in my world" what world is her world? i thought we just had the one world....she apparently inhabits a differnt world, perhaps a super-race world.
anyway she is running for VP not mother of the year but her inability to mother does not say much for her character or leadership

I heard loud and clear that Obama plans to raise taxes (especially on the small business and middle class.) "We will all have to tighten our belt to help our neighbors" read get ready for heavy tax burden ahead to fund the trillions of extra dollars to fund my (Obamas) additional programs.
I heard loud and clear that he (Obama) has no clear objective in commiting our troops, but will do so on a "moral" whim (get ready to see our precious troops sent all over for one fruitless clean up job after another) wether or not it really concerns our security? McCain said he would only do so if it were obvious that we could obtain our objective and it was clearly defined.
I heard loud and clear Obama "There was only 18 billion in pork barrel spending this year" Oh really? What about the 150 billion in pork that was JUST PASSED THROUGH CONGRESS?? Wasn't he there? Or was he just not paying attention?
I do the books for my household and just adding in my head I could tell that Obamas policies would add maybe even as much as 90,000 dollars in tax burden to every American. I don't know about you but I can buy an awful lot of health insurance for 90 grand!
But lastly Obama declared "I am standing here (with my fine education) because of Americas oppurtunities" Then in the next breath "But I want to change all that"
America, please take out the cotton from your ears and get out your calculators before you get the big shock. And as far as McCain leaving the debate? How could anyone tell where he and Cindy were since the cameras were only trained on Obama, again the media always giving their man an unfair advantage any way that they can!

Seriously Pastor...saying that McCain would only use our troops in situations where clear objectives and military goals can be obtained...have you not heard of this quagmire called Irag??? Let me remind you...it's a war that McCain not only supported by encouraged. There has never been a clearly articulated military objective for that war. McCain keeps calling the surge a success but we're still there with troop levels greater than before the surge. When asked to define success, he nor Bush can define it.

Regarding your estimate of $90K per person tax burden...please share your math with the rest of us. I'm seriously considering changing careers to that of a pastor, as you must be making significantly more than my meager $180K a year (with a tax burden near $40K).

check politifact.com and you'll find that earmarks account for about $18B of the budget. I don't mind people having different opinions, but please base them on facts...not just what you want to believe based on the Republican talking points.

I am amazed at your jealous comments. Have you checked out what Cindy has done with her life to earn the right to wear whatever she would like to put on her body? If youthink money should be divided among the citizen's instead of a person get's what they work hard for-called accomplishments...you need to move to China.

Obama talks a good game...but he will put our country into a socialist state...

McCain/Palin are real, passionate and stand for what America was originally founded on.
Wake up America...before they have taken our country without firing a shot...!!

You should rather hear what republicans senators that know him well think about him, what the Reagans think about him, what his former lawyer think about him. Look his temper , his anger, his gut decisions, his erratic behavior changing positions everyday, his selection of Palin for his gain , not thinking of consequences for the country and the list is long......
Do your own recommendation and take the cotton out of your ears when listening Obama and rather put the cotton in when listening the right wing hate radio and so-called pastor willing to be politician.
McCain is 72 years old and it shows, his father and gd-father died at 72 from heart attack. I think he will not finish his 1st term. Have you noticed how all president age fast when in power? And who will govern us Sarah and Todd? Are you kidding yourself?
      Wake up to reality!
