DUMPLIN.... How is it that when reporters follow-up on Palin, they are the liberal media, but when reporters don't repeatedly report on the same old stories about Obama they aren't doing their jobs? Those stories have been written over and over again. Just look them up and read them, don't ask the media to rehash old stories just to stir up dirt.. It's so pathetic...

Kerri - $200 Billion will not go to CEOs. The money can't go to CEO's. The essence of the plan - whether you agree or not - is to back the financial comanies with cash - they may never use it - so that other banks will not worrying about lending to them. Now, these companies can pay their help and expand their busienss, paying subcontractors, using the bank multiplier effect, and stimulating sales. Kind of the house that Jack built. Nobody understands it. But, it is important to note that very littlemoney will actually be drawn down against the tax payer. if you remember Chrysler decades ago, the government offered a iine of credit - just like AIG -with a high rate of interest. Chrysler never drew. They used it as security to borrow from commericlal banks at lower rates. Later, the government who was gvien warrnts as collaterol, sold them at a big profit. It is important to remember that Chrysler never took a dime from the government. it will be much the same this time. Paulson is way smarter than congress.

Did you guys here that the AIG CEOS just recently went on a $440,000 retreat using our bailout tax money...for their spa treatments, a banquet, and rounds of golf. That is so messed up!

  • Posted By: cscnnv @ 10/08/2008 3:15:12 PM

Speaking of CEOs, did you hear the ones with AIG just went on a $440,000 retreat in California using our taxpayer money for their spa treatments, a banquet, and golfing. That is so wrong!

This year we have to choose a lesser of the two evils. I still have not decided who to vote for. Usually I have a clear cut idea of which party I am going to support. But this is rediculous. I am having a hard time determining fact from fiction when these two candidates speak out.

I agree with many others who say many stupid decisions made by americans have caused the crisis we are in today. And I don't know how much of this is true, but I also heard the $700 billion dollar bail out just put a lot of money into the CEO's of the businesses we were bailing out. Some plan...

It's a shame that we don't really have an ideal candidate for President this election year. And I wish I knew how to separate fact from fiction when the candidates are concerned. I feel like I am going to have to guess based on everything I have heard and that is a little unsettling.

    Confused and undecided.

kerri. Did you find it hard in 2000 and in 2004 to vote, because we didn't have a good selection, then?

  • Posted By: Robin63 @ 10/08/2008 12:53:45 PM

What about those of use who were fiscally cautious and refinanced using fixed rates, had I known we would all be bailed out I would have bought a much more expensive home and expected someone else to make the payments for me.

    • Posted By: pinkice402 @ 10/08/2008 3:04:55 PM

I absolutely agree. I wish I bought a house period. I am living with my mother-in-law because I am a student and my husband and I can't afford a house payment. What was I thinking. We should've gone for it anyways. Little did I know the government would have taken care of us.

Really, Independence? I didn't that, and I hope you are not lying. I think that nuclear fission would be better than fusion, anyway.

  • Posted By: Independence @ 10/08/2008 2:36:36 PM

One misleading statement that McCain continues is that nuclear power will help make the US energy independent. DOE figures show that in 2007 we imported over 92% of our nuclear fuel and over 1/3 of the imports came from Russia. We are much more dependent on imported uranium than even imported oil.

Agreed - "Tom Brokjaw" was not sterling. Isn't he working 3rd shift at Burger King? Maybe McDonalds.

  • Posted By: Momoffive @ 10/08/2008 2:34:40 PM

Fact check is so important. Another important factor would be "regulating" platitutdes, cliches, repeatitions ad nauseum so that viewers and readers can find facts in all the verbiage. I give Sen. McCain thelower vote on those flaws in campaigning.

  • Posted By: aad135 @ 10/08/2008 2:08:35 PM

Poorandworking and COretiree - you have hit the nail on the head. Yes, everything you've said is exactly what this "bail-out" means. Personally, I have no credit card debt, no mortgage to pay (I own my home), no car loans, no student loans. I banked with WaMu, and potentially all but $250K (FDIC insurance) of my savings and CD investments with WaMu will be gone due to their bankruptcy (+/- $600K, CD investments are not FDIC insured). My credit rating was above 700 prior to this bail-out, now it is below 400 due to my banking at WaMu and their problems. Now, I am paying for their bail-out. Go figure; is this the American Way? It is the dumb, American consumer that has got us into this mess; not just the banks and not de-regulation by the government. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is - my old grandmother used to say.

    • Posted By: valark @ 10/08/2008 2:34:15 PM

Why did you make uninsured banking investments?

  • Posted By: alaplex @ 10/08/2008 2:29:10 PM

The nonsense of this debate started with the moderator Tom Brokaw...He is so full of himself with his clear pronunciaton of words which he obviously has little understanding of. He says he picked "intelligent" questions from a pool of questions. "Do you belive Russia is an evil empire"? Yes or no? Do you believe the stupidity of this moron. If it wasn't for the teleprompter this guy would be working 3rd shif at Burger King. Give me a a break. Can't we at least get a moderator who has some understanding of the issues. Reminds me of the candidates. All style and no substance.

Poorandworking - that would be a start. McCain says that fundamentally, the economy is strong - and he says that with the working American people as the foundation of that economy. Yet government makes it too easy for that foundation to become cracked by over-supplying the welfare system (reminder: FDR, a Democrat, established the Welfare, Social Security, and Medicare systems that have evolved into the defunct systems that they are today). Democrats are always in favor of expanding the role of government, raise taxes, more "programs"... I am an American Indian, and every year, our tribal leaders encourage our people to vote Democrat so the welfare and program monies will keep pouring into the Tribe's coffers. The BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) is a prime example of a welfare system that is out of control. More and more tribes are using large percentages of your tax dollars towards Tribal capital investments (casinos, resorts, golf courses, etc.) to help establish their own self-governance. Indian tribes proposed this to the BIA in 1986, and 22 years later, we are no closer to that self-governance than we were then, and in most cases BIA budgets have increased. During the Cold War years, the US fought socialism all over the world, except in our own government - this bail out is the latest socialist action by our government. If we were truly capitalist, AIG, Lehman Brothers, and all the others would have to close their doors due to their ineptitude, and the stupid American people who thought they could get something for not very much and live beyond their means would have to suffer the consequences of their bad investments. MCCAIN/PALIN 2008..!

maybe they need to CUT WELFARE OUT OF THE SYSTEM, and make those people pay it all back, maybe that would help.

    • Posted By: kingschild247 @ 10/08/2008 2:15:34 PM

I agree that this whole situation is a big mess but don't let your emotions get the best of you poorandworking!! There are some people that are born into poverty w/o a choice and welfare benefits
have been there only means of food, and health care-which just barely meets their needs. The government is the one to blame, NOT the misfortunate, so choose your words carefully. God forbid if you're laid off of work and find yourself in line and the welfare office in need. NO ONE in this country is safe from being homeless or poor-REMEMBER THAT before you start insulting people that maybe didn't have a choice about their circumstances (ie born into a poor family); God bless you and our country!!

How much is this helping the people who dont have credit cards, dont have a house, havent taken anything from the government (except our tax returns every year), havent filed bankruptcy, and who live pay check to paycheck???? What are we getting "bailed-out" of??? What i see is if you over-extended your credit, took on more than you can, bought a house because you thought it was a good idea, lived beyond your means, the gov is going to come in and save you. Seems people are forgeting about the people who DIDNT live like this, and struggle everyday, are not on WELFARE, yet go to work like NORMAL people should, and we are GOING TO PAY FOR THIS!!!! So for the people that work hard, pay their bills, and havent lived beyond their means, the government is basically saying screw you!!!

Am I understanding this mortgage bailout thing correctly? This statement troubles me: " It requires the secretary to buy up troubled mortgages while taking into consideration the need to help families keep their homes and to stabilize communities. It also says "the Secretary shall consent, where appropriate (to) loss mitigation measures, including term extensions, rate reductions (or) principal write downs." BOTH parties are supporting this. I get the term extensions and rate reductions, but what's this about principal write downs? Does this mean the govt. will revalue a home at the current low values to reduce their loan obligation, but only for those folks who took on loans they couldn't afford in the first place. But then when values are back up to their current levels in say five years, those who were "bailed out" will make the profits and those who weren't will just be back at the same place? Sounds like unfair reward for not meeting your financial responsibilities! Am I getting this wrong?

I have to admit I was very disappointed in Barak's non answer in regard to Social Security. The awful truth is, how can Social Security stay solvent when firstly it's monies are used by the government to pay people who's monies have already been spent. Then no politician mentions how these people of wealth and huge corps open a dummy office in the Caribbean with no person tending it only to rape the Social Security of incoming monies? If the American Government pays the bills why aren't they taxed like everyone else.? Is the world economy showing signs of growing pains or outright failure? Are the unknown rich finally getting their wish of
complete domination of the monetary system? Is a civil war next? Will the rich be able to keep the Middle and
Lower Classes paying to defend their fat accounts? After over 200 years, why have we allowed a politician to
step on our rights and feed the greed? Most important, when will it stop?

I agree with this posting. I graduated from College with a Communications major and advertising emphasis. It was not so long ago either, but boy have things changed! In college we were taught that the media reports the news, not invents it and certainly does not editorialize it! Why can't you deliver unbiased news?! What is happening to the media? What is happening to America? Is it the case that based on who owns the station or the newspaper that this will be your slant on whatever you report?! This bipartisanship, this slamming of both parties back and forth, this blaming the republicans on everything that is wrong with the country is ridiculous. Is it only Republicans in Office?! No! Are there only Democrats trying to solve problems?! NO! The financial crisis and the political situation that we are in now are only hightened and intensified by a biased media. So what are we the Amercians, just mindless sheep that can be led to think what you all report.?! Please hold true to your journalistic ethics and not just the values of those that sign your paychecks!
