I just love these "fact check" stories: Another chance for the over-the-edge liberal media to try desperately to "filter" (muddy) the one chance Republicans get to actually speak directly to the American people. It's always the Republican "was wrong" or "misstated" or "actually, it's nothing like X." The Democrat "didn't quite tell the whole truth" or "that's a stronger statement than he's made before" or "that's not entirely true." It's OK: Every one of these things we see just makes more of us move over to the McCain-Palin ticket. But wait, the liberals have an answer ready for that, too: "White people who simply won't vote for Barack because of race." Oh well, I guess we'll live them in exchange for the right to govern ourselves...
Don't like fact checking, do it yourself. What I don't like are simpletons who cling to a political party! Our parties have become nothing more than juvenile clicks. Their sophomoric behavior put us in the morass we're in. Each party has great/highly competent leaders (Like McCain - who I have repeatedly supported in the past & even Obama) and each has bums. Here's the reality-check...Is Palin a "capable president," if required to step in for McCain? This should be at the heart of everyone's voting decision.
If you don't like the media, you do the fact finding. What I don't like are simpletons who cling to a political party! Our parties have become nothing more than juvenile clicks. Such sophomoric behavior has driven our country into this morass! Each party has great leaders (McCain - who I have supported in the past & Obama) and each has bums. Reality check - Is Palin a capable president, if we'd ever lose McCain?
OMG, this last "debate" was so boring I almost couldn't watch most of it. The two candidates spent WAY TOO MUCH ATTACKING EACH OTHER; I was hoping for a change in script, to learn something new about either or both of them, and instead I got a regurgitated version of Debate 1, tit for bloody tat.
I hope the third and final (thank god) debate, as these things are called, will go a little better - and that both will actually say some things that really make sense, that are educational about their positions and that they both refrain from overkill on the "May I just respond to that..." with the same old lines from their campaign messaging playbooks... it's really OLD to those of us glued to our sets watching these things.
I think Americans should watch the political debates in France, as Christiane Amanpour suggested one night on CNN. There, she said, the two French presidential candidates spent a couple of hours across a table freely discussion issues and how they'd propose to resolve or implement solutions. How refreshing - unscripted, no attacks, no hardcore b.s., none of the same-old-same-old - just spontaneous, intellectual and really revealing and ecuational.
I don't suppose that could ever happen in the US elections, though. Come to think of it, we have too many dummies in our electorate to make this a really valuable, appreciated exercise. Still, I think this format should be considered for at least ONE of the debates next election cycle. The ones we have here are WAY TOO OVER-ORGANIZED, TOO CODIFIED, TOO PRESCRIBED, TOO SCRIPTED and TOO CONTRIVED.
I thought we were the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave? Why don't we let our candidates show how smart and well spoken, how intelligent and how intellectual they are - seeing them in a real discussion, maybe with Bill Moyers or someone of his caliber - Dave Gergen might be good too. I'm sick of this "electioneering" that we're getting, ad nauseum, from both campaigns!
maybe howard stern or jerry springer to moderate .now that would be a debate with answers
One thing we can all be grateful for: John McCain didn't bring up his POW experience during this last debate. At one point, I thought he would, and I was getting ready to balk and leave the room; but then he refrained, thank goodness. That is one story I think he really has overplayed - due no doubt to his advisors who are pretty crappy, old-school Rovian-style types. What a mistake for John McCain's image.
I wanted to yell at Obama to shut up a time or two - he was starting to go overboard on the corrections, and he didn't tell us anything new - I know he has key messages to repeat over and over, and much of it was in response to attacks (largely unfair) from McCain's side, but between the attacks and the time it took to respond to them, both candidates lost my interest.
I plan to vote for Obama-Biden as this is the only intelligent ticket that the rest of the world agrees with as well. There is no other option, especially now that McCain has nominated Palin as his running mate; she is the absolute stunner-laughing-stock of the intelligent world. That was a terrible mistake on the part of McCain's campaign. Sorry, Sarah, I'm sure you're a nice "gal" but you're not my cup of tea for VP.
WE ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED AT THE WAY JOHN MCCAIN CONDUCTS HIS CAMPAIGN.INSTEAD OF BEING PRESIDENTIAL,HE CONTIUES WITH HIS SMEAR CAMPAIGN THAT HURTS HIM AND TO ADD MRS.MCCAIN SPEAKS DIRTY.THAT'S NOT A WOMEN THAT WANTS TO BE THE FIRST LADY
It's nice to read the corrections of these candidates. I am so confused. Who can you trust to tell you the truth? I can't really tell you WHO I would vote for. Who's lieing and who's not. Maybe I'll just forget to vote and see what happens. That would be a 1st for me. Really disappointed!!!
I love it! That is the best idea I've heard so far. Oh, but wait, can we dump Miss Alaska?
You all want to bicker about who is the better candidate, who is gonna do this and who is gonna do that when everybody knows the system is broken... Let's stop fighting each other and unite as Americans!!! Democracy works... just not under the current environment... Washington need to serve the people again... not special interest not the lobbyists... the people the PEOPLE....
"McCain lamented that the U.S. was forced to "withdraw in humiliation" from Somalia in 1994, but he failed to note that he once proposed to cut off funding for troops to force a faster withdrawal."
Let me get this straight. So it's a humiliating withdrawal for the US military to pull out of Somalia after losing only a few dozens of its soldiers while it killed hundreds, possibly more than a thousand Somalis? I'd say a job well done! It just sticks in my craw whenever I hear American politicians talk about how US lost the Vietnam war and how the operation in Somalia was a FUBAR mission. Whenever the US military goes in, it leaves behind a huge amount of casualties on THE OTHER SIDE! I'm reminded of a 60 Minutes report where a Delta Force soldier gets choked up while describing his team's harrowing firefight being surrounded by hundreds of Talibans. His team lost two guys (may them rest in peace) but Talibans apparently lost more than a hundred. I understand it's terribly sad to lose you comrades but that's a helluva kill ratio. Pat yourself on the back for the job well done and move on for crying out loud!
Let's face facts Amercians both sides of the coin are dirty... Both Rebublicans and Democrats have an agenda of their own and not of the American people... This country is for the people by the people and when government has become ineffective it is up to the people to dismantle the current government and start new...
Why not forget the party, get the two candidates working together on the ideas they have together and we could have a good team leading the country. It is not the current administration that will have the responsibility but the new elected government officials.
MICKEY MOUSE 08 and FEEL GREAT!! Minnie Mouse has had ties with terrorist, radical preachers and poor economic policy MICKY MOUSE HAS THE CHEESE TO PLEASE remember if you are still undecided vote MICKEY MOUSE!!
This is really not a site for five year olds,I am sure you mother taught you not to but in when grown ups were talking.
OLDs do you perhaps the Clinton years? NAFTA? the basis for illegal immigration? the conception of outsourcing? I challenge you do use the internet as well my friend....
Enough of this mud slinging Bull *** contest. The "debate last night was disgusting. Neither talked about present mess with any semblance of what created it, how do we fix it, but kept up steady drumbeat of finger pointing. Neither one of these idiots are fit to be President of their High School class let alone be President of this Country. For crying out loud, explain with honesty the situation, and then layout a full comprehensive plan to correct it. Speak specifics not sound bites and character assassination. We need Leadership, and that requires them to tell us the truth good or bad, and how we can bring our Country back from the brink of ruin. EXAMPLES would be. Bring our Manufacturing jobs back from over seas (outsourcing). Demand parity in the "free trade agreements", there is no way in Hell that our people can compete with over seas manufacturers who paid pennies on the dollar. STOP ALL paid Lobbyists, BAN THEM ALL TOGETHER. STOP all PORK/Sweeteners. FREEZE ALL spending. Set up a special prosecutor to investigate Congress and Financial wizards and bring crimminal charges. These are only for starters. How in good common sense can either candidate espouse further spending and tax cuts, when we as a Country flat out do not have it. Face it folks the FREE RIDE IS OVER, it is time for each of you to take personal responsibility for your actions. It is way past time that we as a unified populace tell Congress that we no longer require their self serving and incompetence. Regardless of party affiliation, do your homework and vote for the best person, not party, at Local, State and Nationally. I feel that regardless of who we elect, neither are actually morally fit to hold the Office of President of the USA. I'm sure we could randomly pick anyone out of the phone book and get better Leadership, and common sense than the total that has been exhibited so far by our "experienced Leaders".
This is the most intelligent thing I have read all day. Amen to that.
great comment!
Look at history... how did we get out of the Great Depression---government spending to employ the people of America. True, we don't have the money to do it, but the only solution to avoid a full on depression is to spend more on projects to employ the people.
Ltrabert: it is simple under John McCain proposal the employer will give you the $6300 that it previously had been paying to an insurance company plan. You will have tax on it with a marginal rate of fifteen percent depending on your bracket you will have to pay $945 federal tax which will give you a net of $5355. If you owe no federal tax liability your net will be the full $6300. Additionally you will get a $5000 tax credit which is not a deduction is dollar for dollar money at the end of your return. So you will have a total of $10,355 to buy health insurance under John McCain???s plan. You can still have the benefits of your employer???s group if you would choose to participate. The only difference is that the employer is giving you the money in this case and you make the payment. You can pay an employer sponsored group or get your own policy. The company can still sponsor a group, the only thing is that they will not be paying for each employee will be. The point is that you will not only have $5000 cash in the form of a credit, your employer will likely give you the $6300 it had previously paid an insurance company.
The final point in your case is that you have $10,355 worth of money to work with.
That is not even close to the way that his proposed plan is supposed to work. The tax credit is only $2500 for a single person and $5000 for a family and most of the other things you have posted are not correct either. The credit is given to the insurance company and not you, the employer still pays the insurance company and not you, you get taxed on the value of the plan and not what ever kind of deal your employer makes for the fee, the credit is taken off of whatever your tax liability is, if you don't have one then it doesn't really help you. I am sure that if the companies were not longer paying the insurance they certainly would be just giving the money to you. This plan helps no one but the insurance companies. It certainly doesn't help any uninsured children get the health care that they need.
huh? how are you coming up with your figures? why would you think that employers would increase your salary by the amount of the insurance premium? why would they increase the amount of payroll tax they are paying to do it?
huh? an employer is going to increase your salary by the premiums that they are paying for insurance? are you kidding me, what planet do you live on? your employer will look for the cheapest, least amount of coverage if that is the case.
This is a response to AF_Veteram@10/08/2008 9:28 PM. It is the naive people such as you who got us in this mess in the first place. There is no way that you nor anyone else can justify the saying that the Democrats of Congress got us in this mess. Bush and his Republicians got us in this mess by outsourcing the jobs, refusing to raise the minimum wages and hiring the illegals. Remember, if you can read that the Republicians were totally in control when Bush begin to outsource the jobs. The Democrats have only been in control for the past two years and the major maintenance on our major airlines were outsourced over five years ago. You go the internet, check it out.
Kennedy agreed to meet unconditionally with Krushchev and we got the Cuban Missle crisis, Carter said that "Pax America" was over and that the US needed to abide by what the World Community dictated and we got 56 Americans taken hostage by the Iranians and the Russians invaded Afganistian. Clinton working off UN mandates didn't react to the 93 bombing of the WTC nor did he react to the USS Cole. I wonder what to expect from Obama.
I was reading about The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein. While I don???t completely prescribe to the theory, it made me more wary of further Republican control and the opportunistic transfer of public wealth to the private sector (also seen with 9-11 and the Iraq War, Katrina, etc.).
Experts warn there will be more disasters/crisis to come. Then McCain spoke about his plan to buy bad mortgages--in addition to the bail-out plan already passed. This would represent a HUGE transfer of public funds to the private sector, because he's suggesting tax payes buy these bad mortgages from banks at the inflated price (i.e., at a loss) to allow the banks to refinance the loans at homes current values.
We must be vigilant. Enough of extreme free-market capitalism and greed that the Republican Party represents. The only hope for real change is to change the Party in control.
Which party, Congress who passes the laws while leaving the President in as an escape goat?
if the shock doctrine interests you, check out Loose Change on Youtube. It's based on facts that can be checked and cross referenced (you can check it out yourself). It's important that we inform ourselves and keep our government in check. remember, they are there to serve and represent US. we are not here to serve them. Be a true patriot, inform yourself, inform others, and take a part in your government!
Obama is the Mulatto Kenyan Hawaiian "Howdy Doody" whose strings are pulled by Marxist; Malcolm X; Lewis Farakan; Hugo Chavez, William Ayers, Tony Rezko; Richard Daly, Rev. Jerimiah Wright; Barney Franks; Chris Dodd; and owned by his wife Michelle Obama.Obama will go down for the count in this fight and John McCain will stand over his prone body for effect.John McCain is winning and will be the next President of The United States of America and not this wanna-be African American Obama. McCain will win get used to it.
You must be racist...I am sure you would deny it. John McCain is hardly able to stand up....and if he dies we would get the ditzy Sarah Palin whose campaign signs say " I am voting for the Chick". I would rather vote for anyone who is not a Republican and is associated with that ignorant, money grubbing George Bush who has his hands in my pockets with his oil stocks to make his bank accounts fatter. The money Bush and his cronies...including McCain have is blood money taken from the backs of the poor and middle class Americans of this country. He should be impeached and his Republican cohorts in the House and Senate should be hung!
There you go again, bringing up the race crap. Explain to me, just for fun, how you know so god damn much about Bush's hand being in your pocket with the oil stock crap you're talking about. You are just plain delusional.
If you think for one friggin minute that either Bush or Cheney are making ANY money from oil it just goes to show how fu**ing stupid you are. They are required BY LAW to put whatever they have in a BLIND TRUST.
You blame everything on Bush and Cheney when they don't even make legislation, that's the job of Congress and they have certainly got us screwed up, EXAMPLE, the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac meltdown. And that can be laid right on the doorstep of the Democrats of Congress.
LOL. They're coming to take you away ... ha, ha, ho, ho, hee, hee ... to the funny farm ... where everything is beautiful ...
Hey fellow Vet.... You mean this John McCain???
Try this FACT about McCain the POW Songbird who did far worse then Jane Fonda....
http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/cin_declassified_landing.htm
You need to deal with the FACT McCain as a POW told the Vietnamese how many NEW Pilots were transferred with him to the Aircraft Carrier he was on... Plus other information... Is McCain open as a potential President to Blackmail and or extortion by Foreign Governments who have copies of his co-operation with the enemy as a POW??? It's called giving AID and Comfort to the Enemy... NO! McCain is NOT a Hero ,or My Friend... Check your Obama Facts also... Ayers did NOT invite Obama to a Political get together in his Home... Obama was invited by his Mentor to that get together, NOT Ayers...
Fact sheet - you forgot to mention that this debates are useless for the candidates and only good entertainment for monday morning quarterback - there was no question on character, worldview, governemt style, expectations. Why are this plans so important, I like the way that we have two party expert work groups who work out eg health care plans. Under Obama, no preconditions and every one covered - expect the cost to quadruple until the average american weight is international standard - we are the sickest and most unfit nation on earth - heard no one say to scratch 30 minutes of TV and jog by McDonalds?
