I lived in Laramie for a year and it's one of my favorite places ever and I'd just like to say that I had PLENTY of gay friends, and knew plenty more and none of them dealt any more hatred and prejudice than they would most anywhere else in the country. This whole notion of Laramie being some stronghold of ignorant gay-hating hicks is really blown out of proportion. Sure, there were some of those, but I find that if there's a group of people who hate tattoos or punk music, like i enjoy, i tend to not spend time with those people. My gay friends made friends with other gays and non prejudice people and dismissed the close-minded people as did most of us. I just find it irritating that because of a freak incident of a couple of violent pigs killing someone who happened to be gay, that the city is now pitied by higher educated folk as a dim pit of ignorant hick gay haters. We all don't frown upon the hometown of Jonbenet Ramsy as a city of child haters, so why should this be different?

I grew up in Wyoming, I lived in Laramie for several years where I had several gay friends who never had any problems. Yes, it is extremely tragic about what happened to Matthew Shepard. However, I don't t think that a whole town or state should be labeled due to the actions of 2 horrible, closed minded bigots. Everywhere has people like that. Yes, there are changes that need to be made, not just in Wyoming, but in the country as a whole.
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ARE inherent rights for ALL people. So same-sex partners can marry, have a family, and have the same rights as any heterosexual persons or couples. This is from a heterosexual person. I think too many people are afraid to expand their understanding of life and the mass media is guilty of promoting the stereotypes as well.
To the goose that labeled homosexuality a biological development and not a choice. I don't agree or disagree with you. But your ignorant statement about reading science books instead of the holy bible before making such silly and uneducated comments is in itself silly and uneducated. Science is not fact. Science proves itself wrong as often as it proves itself right. The scientific method is to continually test 'theories'.
If you want to take a stand and bark like an elitist, you have every right to do so. But your belief in scientists is faith just like people have faith in God. To make a truly educated statement, you would know both idealogies before making an ignorant generalization of other people's faith. So in the spirit of your own words, please read some of the holy bible instead of science books before making such silly and uneducated comments.
In response to the comment below this one:
Geez, you don't sound very christian. You ask how much hatred people are feeling, but wow, your email is full of hate. Nothing in that email sounds like it's out of love but rather, your own resentments. How can you even remotely suggest God was in favor of 9/11 (and I live in the south, where people had the audacity to suggest God was behind Katrina)? Wow. Yeah, that's just dripping with love. I'm sure God appreciates you speaking for Him in that capacity. And the last time I read the 10 commandments it didn't mention anything about homosexuality..? Which version are you reading? Perhaps if you truly did see people thru the eyes of love, these things wouldn't get you so riled up but instead you would fee compassion for people who would appreciate a little respect. I'm in favor of gay unions because two people who spend their lives together should have rights. Rights to assets, hospital visits, beneficiary status, etc. It's unfair to deny someone's life partner these benefits because someone else is personally offended by their lifestyle. Get over it. Oh, and
our 'forefathers' also thought slavery was a good idea.... Got anything to say about that?
I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I moved to Laramie, Wyoming in 2004 in my mid 20's where I attended school at the Univerisity of Wyoming. I NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THE MATTHEW SHEPARD CASE until I got to Laramie. What I found when I got there? Laramie was no different in the attitude towards homosexuals than any other place I have lived...including California. Im straight, but I got to know plenty of gay friends...and NONE of them hid who they were...EVER. So has anything changed in Laramie over the last 10 years? Probably not. Did the media punish a whole town and the state of Wyoming because of the actions of two men? Defintely.

I'm not even going to bother attacking the root source of this hatred and bigotry. It's a dead horse. Laramie, Wyoming, indeed, the United States, is not the land of tolerance I was taught it was. It isn't the land where the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness of the individual is paramount. It never was, and I have serious doubts it ever will be. We as a nation act so high-and-mighty; and there is a sizable part of the population who wonder why some people can't understand why some of their fellow citizens are so cynical and bitter; it's not an "America sucks" mentality, so don't start. It's a "Hypocrisy sucks" mentality. When I was child in Sunday school, I was taught the Golden Rule; where was everyone else???
The reality of politics in the US is for a group to MAINTAIN their victim status, not overcome it. In victimhood there is power. Once that is removed, you are left with responibility for your actions, and most victim groups don't want that. And so they strive not to suceed.
The only place there was no blood on Mathew Shepard's face
is where his tears had washed it away..
Thomas Boyle is the moderate Democrat write-in candidate for president..
Boyle will stop hate crimes. Write-in his name on the write-in line, the bottom line..
So let's look at this - two rednecks get drunk, possible fight about drugs, and kill a gay student, possibly abot drugs. And now ALL of Laramie is homophobic and must be taught to change. And yet, get a couple of minorities to brutally murder a caucasian, and it is the caucasians fault, and it is caucasians who must change. Makes sense.
As far as The Laramie Project changing lives, it is a one side depiction, slanted to draw sympathy in the way that the events are FICTIONALISED. Think Fahrenhite 911...
To add to that, since the "Hit" was out there, read at the same page where a "Missing Black Fly Fisherman" also got used as an attempted frame-up on me. Where his brake lines were cut, where his body probably still is near the bottom of Blackhall Valley, why the Forest Service, to whom we found evidence & reported same: Nothing Done. http://www.rickhyatt.freeservers.com/pages/mckenney henderson.html Because he was black?
I didn't go to your post, but there is no statute of limitations on Murder. Where is the DOJ/FBI. There is a decent assumption that a dead persons civil rights might have been infringed.
In reading this article, it makes me so sad that it appears that nothing has really changed in Laramie,...how very, very sad. A previous poster (tx country boy79) said it right,....we did not choose this for ourselves,....being beaten, made fun of, teased,....whatever else. I am gay,....and I have gone through certain instances where I was judged,....it was unfortunate, and I lost what I thought was a good friend. I am a professional woman, a great mom, and a wonderful partner,....and those who judge,....honey, if you saw me, you would never know I was a lesbian. So you see what happens when people are judgemental? One of my all time quotes is,..You are not God,....and you have no right to judge me,...God created us all,.....so please look at yourself before you judge me, and my brothers and sisters.
In the defense of Laramie, is it fair to put Laramie to a standard of change that the rest of the nation has not reached. Yes, there are still homophobes in Laramie. But aren't there homophobes in most places in the country. The horrible crime happened here, but why does it recieve more notoriety than any other defenseless victim. I just believe that if you are going to hold Laramie to this standard. Make sure you are holding your hometown to the same standard. Has anything changed elsewhere?
You are right. Arkansas is still tarred by the Faubus Administration, and the Little Rock High incident. Once you have an incident of infamy, it is near impossible to be rid of it. As for bigotry in Wyoming, I doubt it is statistically different in any significant way from any other state. I have plenty of family in the 'enlightened' land of California and they are not exactly live and let live types. I can not know whether or not affinity is a heritable trait, but I am damn sure that bigotry is learned.
we serve your country, your community and for some, even your meals. We are a part of society. We make the same sacrifices, pay the same taxes (without any discounts for marriage like some states give) yet we are still the only people you openly critizise, descriminate and continue to make legislation against.
I know that i am a high ranking official of a large Police Department and holding ourselves to a higher standard than those that point the finger will make us prevail and one day enjoy the same freedoms and benefits as every American. Lt. Col.
My husband and I just watched the "Laramie Project" and I must admit it changed my husband's view on his beliefs, the way he was taught, a farm boy, whose did and said what he was taught. He went outside of the box... he broadened his thoughts and took out the "image" of an act and replaced it with "the humanization" of the individuals. The whole issue of same sex relationships is just that.... the "image" of an act that is actually between two people and not for viewing........either in mind or body.......... My child is fat...... ew, the image of such a thought..........no different as far as I am concerned. We are all human, we are all a unity of a community, country, society. Let go of the "image" or "act" and you find the guy next door, the newspaper person, the congressman, professor............. and hey, we like them.............too much emphasis as been brought to this subject.........all boils down to "to eachs own"... you don't tell me what to do on my porch... and I won't tell you. As long as it doesn't hurt me and mine...........I can't judge you or yours...
We don't want homosexuals murdered. But i'm tired of Liberal moralizing about "gay" rights, same sex partners and all the rest of that tiresome crusading. People in Montana don't approve of homosexuality and they don't want to make Matthew Shepard into "Saint Matthew." Stop pushing gay sex onto the rest of us.
gofreeman,
Gays don't "push gay sex" onto the rest ofus. It is some of us heterosexuals who are trying to push heterosexual sex onto gays by trying to force them back into the closet. If they were not discriminaited againt so horribly, you can be fairly sure that they would nt be as vocal. Just as it took the civil rights movement (including marches, protests, boycotts and sit-ins at lunch counters) in the 1950 & 60's to get equal rights for African Americans, the LGBT community is having to make thier presence very well nown to make the point that small-mindedness and bigotry (at times enrobed in the same sort of religious clothing as was used by proponents of segregation) is a violation of the US Consitution's equal protection clause and is against civlized behavior.
Sure you do, all the time, and to little children to not only "tolarate" your behavior, but to accept and promote it.
What about the books such as Heather has two mommies, My daddies roomate and king and king?
How about the library in idaho that allowed the joy of gay sex to left near the children's section? Not pushing your homosexual lifestyle? No, not bloody likely, eh?
It is not MY behavior. I am heterosexual.
"What about the books such as Heather has two mommies, My daddies roomate and king and king?"
What about them. They are valid books about very real and normal family dynamics. The whole idea is that having two moms or two dads is really not different then having one of each (and is invariably better than only having just one parent.)
"ow about the library in idaho that allowed the joy of gay sex to left near the children's section?"
That is not gays pushing that. It is irresponsibility by the librarians. That book is no different thatn the heterosexual Joy of Sex set or Dr. Davbid Rubin's book, "Everything you wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask". None of those books belong near the children's section. They are adult reading.
"Not pushing your homosexual lifestyle? No, not bloody likely, eh?"
No not pushing it at all.
I didn't say you were homo sexual, but if the shoe fits, so be it.
You and your comrades DO push the homo sexual lifestyle and it is done every day.
By telling 5 and 6 year olds that gay sex is "normal" and "cool" you are doing them a disservice by condemning them to a life of immorality.
By the way, a father tried to get the librarian to stop that, but was defeated by the ALA and the ACLU, who said that "freedom of speech" was being interfered with.
Librarians across the country do not even try to stop childrens access to pornography.
Jesus said that what you do to the least of these, meaning children, you do to Him
More children are going to be ruined and more children are going to die because you allow it..
Wow, people really are short sighted in this world. Growing up gay is no more a choice than growing up with some chromosomal or genetic disease. At least if their are books about it a child can feel less alone and less like an outcast. People are getting killed because of the attitudes of close minded a-holes like you, not because of people who accept others for who they are and what they believe in.
"I didn't say you were homo sexual, but if the shoe fits, so be it.."
Actually you wrote the following "Sure you do, all the time, and to little children to not only "tolarate" your behavior, but to accept and promote it."
Since your post was doen by hitting the reply to my post=, you were saying that I am gay. Not that it would matter if I were, but you made an invalid presumption.
"You and your comrades DO push the homo sexual lifestyle and it is done every day.
By telling 5 and 6 year olds that gay sex is "normal" and "cool" you are doing them a disservice by condemning them to a life of immorality. "
There is nothing "immoral" about homosexuality, That is religious based garbage.
"By the way, a father tried to get the librarian to stop that, but was defeated by the ALA and the ACLU, who said that "freedom of speech" was being interfered with."
Then they were wrong. Moving it (the "Gay Joy of Sex") to another area of the library is common sense. As for the otehr books you mentioned, the ALA and ACLU are correct. There is no valid reaon to prevent well-written books that are not in any way obscene or pornographic, and are written for children from being accessible to them.
"Librarians across the country do not even try to stop childrens access to pornography."
They do in my area. And the issue would be pornography in general, not jsu a book that is gay sex oriented.
"Jesus said that what you do to the least of these, meaning children, you do to Him"
What he may have said is of no importance to me or to US law.
"More children are going to be ruined and more children are going to die because you allow it.."
Bull. Children are going to be ruined by the hatemongering of far right religious zealots not by understanding that hmosexuality is normal.
I didn't say that you were, I was going by what YOU said "Gays don't "push gay sex" onto the rest of us"
Since you approve of teaching children homo sexual dogma, you must also approve of promoting it.
Librarians that prohibit access to pornography? You'll have to tell me what area so I'll have to check, but from what I have read, librarians are fired for restricting pornography in any way.
If you don't believe that phomosexuality is not immorasl, I wondert what else you think is not.
I have this funny feeling that your definition of what constitutes pornography does not meet the legal definition of pornography.
Librarians do not get fired for limiting underage patron access to sexually explicit material. Now there are book like "Sex in Plain Language" which was written for readers aged 10 and above, but in no way could any sane educated person consdier that pronography.
There is no non-religious reason to claim that homosexuality is "immoral". It is my assertion that god and religion are just man-made things with no universal value (although they may be great value to individual believers), using them as a basis for claiming that something like homosexuality is immoral is invalid.
And that old screed about pushing homosexual dogma is bull. All that the books are saying is that there are families with two daddies or two mommies and that they are just as valid and jsut as nrmal as those with a mommy and daddy. It is normal and is natural whether you like it or not it is not going away.
you said it best, be who you want but stop shoving it done everyone elses throat,
As was shown, it is not shoved down anyone's throats.
The reason that the LGBT community is vocal is that jsut like the clack community in the civil rights era, unless there is publicity , needed chagnes will not be forthcoming and equal rights will not be granted.
Do you represent the entire state of Montana? I think Montana is a beautiful state, when I've traveled there and met MANY people who are accepting of each persons individual beliefs. Maybe you should get out more>
Good point
Gay sex is nothing but a depraved sexual behavior and as such deservers no special rights.
Dear Joe 6 pack - you are a sick and twisted freak. Go to hell a__hole
Matthew was not a "victim" unless you call someone who has AIDS/HIV and intentionally seeks out sexual partners knowing that having sex with them would kill them. A better term for Matthew would be socialpath.
"socialpath, before you make a comment maybe you should use a dictionary or thesaurus.
Matthew Shepard did not have AIDS. Do you think all gay men have AIDS?
Your accusations are unfounded and discriminatory. It's an ugly thing to read.
We were told that this University of Wyoming student was murdered simply because he was a homosexual. The truth is that he was the victim of a robbery gone bad by two drug addicts. What's more, Shepard was also a heavy drug user who was HIV-positive. Not only were the perpetrators of this brutal crime not "homophobes," but one of them knew Shepherd and was allegedly bisexual. The real story of the Matthew Shepard case, as the prosecutor says on "20/20," concerns the dangers of methamphetamine. The two killers and Shepard were big meth users.
http://www.aim.org/media-monitor/exploiting-matthew-shepard/
Not only was Shepard HIV positive, this looks like a gay on gay crime.
I can't find a single corroborating source for that information.
One of his *killers* was high on meth, but I've never heard that he was, or that he had HIV. It *may* have been a simple robbery. But find me more sources or I can't buy into that information.
That is because aim.org is a notoriously invalid source of "information". They are famous for fabricating thigs to push thier agenda on society. Only the ignorant or intentional liars use them a resource/reference.
Kindly cite their "fabrications". You really need to stop reading "progressive" and other media pushing their so-called agenda, such as Media Matters and move-on.org
I do not get my info from move-on.org or media matters.
I check a variety of sources, never relying on just on one.
Perhaps portions of the Bible were inspired by what people believe is or was God. There is no doubt that all religion is man made. Religion is man's way of bring God down to his level...not inpsring men to act like God. God is love and everything else is man made commentary.
