Imagine that it's November fourth, election day. You've read up on all the candidates, local and national, and are ready to cast an informed vote. You get off work a little early and head to the polls.
But after waiting in line, you find out you are not on the voter rolls.
You argue with the poll worker ??? you've voted before! They don't know why you aren't on the list, and weren't trained on what to do. Frustrated and embarassed, you leave without voting.
Purged?
Scenes like this happen more often than you might think, according to a new report from the Brennan Center for Justice. The study found that "thirty-nine states and the District of Columbia reported purging more than 13 million voters from registration rolls between 2004 and 2006." And while affirming that purges correctly-done are an important way to ensure voter rolls are dependable and up-to-date, the study found that:
"Far too frequently, however, eligible, registered citizens show up to vote and discover their names have been removed from the voter lists. States maintain voter rolls in an inconsistent and unaccountable manner. Officials strike voters from the rolls through a process that is shrouded in secrecy, prone to error, and vulnerable to manipulation."
Though the report notes that the "secret and inconsistent manner in which purges are conducted make it difficult, if not impossible, to know exactly how many voters are stricken from voting lists erroneously," it lists multiple instances where tens of thousands of voters were improperly stricken from the rolls.
Protecting Your Vote
The Brennan Center report offers long-term solutions to ensure every eligible voter has a chance to vote. But the 2008 election is just around the corner, and what if you or someone you know is purged?
Election Protection, a non-partisan coalition, offers voter education and protection through an informational Web site and an election hot-line (1-866-OUR-VOTE). They've also offer a useful voting checklist flyer you can print out and bring with you to the poll.

Dear History PhD: WELL SAID!!!!!!! I couldn't agree more. Why is it that these facts are glaringly omitted from "news"?
Dear History PhD: WELL SAID!!!!!!!!!!
who would vote for this guy 2 years of experience, no track record, missed 23% of his votes, ties to radicals, criminals and Acorn...the press is giving him a free ride. have you seen any news bash him the way the bash other politicians? Yeah, he does speak well, big deal. you desrve what you get. btw...you are forgeting the democrats run congress, even bill clinton said they were the blame for this mess.
markh@gpcompanies.com,
your comments are unethical, illogical, and perverse. labeling someone a terrorist is just the kind of behavior you would expect from a 5th grade bully. quite frankly, i suspect what YOUR intentions are, considering the gpcompanies put in your email address. funny how you place blame on obama for the economy... its obvious you lack the intellect to see that the economy has been in shambles while the conservative administration ran in into the ground the past 8 years. but i'm sure you are blind to that.
i guess the saying goes, you can take the horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
Voters beware, it certainly does matter who you vote for. 90% of Cambridge in 2004 didn't want Nader because he lost in 2000. They knew the media did not present his track and it is not his fault, his track speaks for itself. Any encyclopedia has his track. People get mad at me when I offer that as proof he belongs in view, on the ballot, and deserves the majority vote, and the proper "walk the walk and talk the talk and vote the vote."
What kind of a country and a supposedly leading University (Harvard) would produce students who held up signs saying a Vote for Nader is a Vote for Bush, and what kind of Cambridge voters believed such, oh yes, crap indeed, it is crap. Use polite language? there is no word in the English language for this level of depths of libel as the tactics used by the powers that are due usurption when their corruption is in our face. The Democrats are intentionally usurping the voters right to rule, and so is the media with such garbage as you have only two choices. No, we have six, and the probability is with the people waking up to the reality they will get what they vote for and the majority does not belong in a party result, it belongs in the BEST choice voted by an informed public. the informed public is willfully allowing the uninfored polls like this to continue until the proper level of truth happens. There are six, I offer voter registration statistics to underline the reality is ther are six choices, and non-partisan rule exists in the voter registration as a fact. The BEST is very doable, and if the people don;t want six choices and allow the status quo to refuse the power of the people, then that is the vote of no democracy as a fact. If you want the status quo against the people as the rule, then you have no actual government under our U.S. Constitution.
If you do want the power of the people to affirm our democracy and the proper view of a candidate as best for all the people and to support the government defined by the law provided by the constitution, then you vote for a President of the United States as shown a democracy by the leadership not dictatorship; formed in our backbone for people. Two years is the Constitutional limit for any armies raised funding. Two years maximu. We are supposed to mind our own country and be for life, liberty, and the right to pursue happiness.
Nader offers to ably lead us on track.
When I thought I had only two evil choices, I did not vote. I do vote for a strong good choice against the evil. I did not vote for Clinton, and I did not vote for Bush, and I never ever thought it was a duty to vote for a lesser of two evils. Evil never belongs in the office of President of a United States. It is the duty of the people to prove their voting power and responsibility to uphold a good government. The best should nev er be believed a spoiler by the people, the best is wanted, and was drafted by people who are serious about change. I am only familiar with Nader, the others are due the proper competitive limelight and so is Nader. If that does not happen, I am voting for Nader. You cannot tell me a minority dupoloiy rules. Voter registration is proof it does not rule. Voting itself rules, and the people RULE not OBEY. People must vote an honest vote affirming who they choose. You get what you vote for. Certainly Nader can win, and anyone who believes he is best owes their vote to him and no one else. No one else, unequivocably. 90% of Cambridge voters wanted to stay stuck in a mythological duty that is not true, two boxes are not there. I have posed the ballot access for Nader that shows he can win, and I believe the media owes the public the truth, there are SIX to choose from and every voters should know the basics about each of the six and then choose the BEST for a wanted agenda.
I am against the military and against the Bush wars. I hate Condelezza Rice, she is against all proper behavior and policy. No nukes is proper policy and she should have to eat them.
glad to hear they found the moose hunter has violated state law..maybe now the IRS should step in and look into all those phoney charges huh??
That's about the most ignorant statement any person could make. Anybody with half a brain knows that the financial problems our country are experiencing at present are directly related to the sub-prime mortgage business that Jimmy Carter started in the 1976 when he passed the CRA bill. Then, old Billy Boy Clinton, along with those idiots Barney Frank and Chris Dodd expanded on that stupid program to give loans to people who didn't deserve to nor could they afford the home they wanted. But, they pushed it through anyhow. Even liberal Alec Baldwin admitted it wasn't the past 8 years, but the past 30 years that caused the problem. Cramer from Mad Money on "The Colbert report" said exactly the same thing. Now with this liberal Obama, walking hand in hand with the fools who caused the mess to begin with, Dodd, Frank, and now Pelosi, we're all about to get screwed royally. I'd assume abe4600 is about 25 to 30 years old and you didn't live through the dark days of Jimmy Carter. Just wait! You'll be living through them for the next 4 years. Only thing is, we'll have to suffer through it with you, the second time around.
it happened on george's watch. does he have the guts to take responsibility for it? since i had to go to vietnam in his place cause he was a chicken, idoubt that he does. but..........
Here is the actual voter registration nationally totalled: 24 states do not register party--82 million. 26 states offer the opportunity to declare a party, and the number outside by choice is significant and likely not at all :"undecided" I am not interested in either democrat or republican I am indeed seeking change, and am a green wannabe, but favor strong unseating, which i see as offered by Nader, and a real president should be strong, the two party candidates are neither strong at all, and the proper competitive view of all six is due the public for an honest result.
The 26 states that offer party declaration, show these total breakouts: 21.3 million OTHER, and 36 million DEMOCRAT and 26 million REPUBLICAN.
That makes the total OUTSIDE an actual non-partisan majority NOT STUCK with either party, and should only vote for the BEST as clearly a duty due any voter's vote, a proper HONEST vote for the BEST and not a party, the best candidate is supposed to win. Each party is supposed to produce someone who is capable of leading the country on track. The merits are supposed to be known of each before answering the poll which owes all six for any real results.
1,000 is not valid for a poll nor are only two choices when there are SIX candidates on the ballot and only 38% of the country is enrolled in the combined two parties....yes, combined, which certainly means the Democrats do not own the country's vote in November if the country hates what Bush is doing, which I believe was the only accurate polled result by the Washington Post, when they asked "do you think this country is on track or off track?" and they got a polled result showing 85% you guessed it, OFF TRACK. Obviously that is a very clear majority, and the two parties in office deserve the public reality that the majority can vote outside the two parties in both any democracy and especially in view of the actual voter registration nationally where 38% are in the combined two parties. 24 states do not register party. In November we vote not for a Party, but a President.
The Proper Poll question should ask, A-which of the six candidates who each could win a majority do you believe will make the best president? Use the alphabet order to avoid any prejudice, as the voter polled should know the merits when they answer whic h is best for a real president to win a majority...these six are on the ballot: Baldwin, Constitutional Party; Barr, Libertarian Party, McCain, Republican Party, McKinney, Green Party, Nader, Independent Candidate, Obama, Democrat Party.
The Democrats are liars against the majority telling the majority they have only one choice to vote out the Bush agenda, and it is a lie. There are SIX and the OUTSIDE can rule if the majority wants the change to the status quo which is both against the Constitution and against proper public interest shown in policy leadership, and against international peace supporting policy at an egregious level, needed a true leader with a credible track record at a prestigeous level worth the presidency.
I am voting for Ralph Nader and the media is trying to force a two party system that does not exist anywhere except in office, agains the best interests of the elections and the public interest. Nader is accusing both parties of extreme corporate corrupt policies and results, and I agree.
The public should demand a six way debate to force the truth into the limelight. And they should know the truth about the reality that 62% are not registered in the two parties, the outside is a majority.
Give me a break. Do you even understand what FannieMae and FreddieMac are? Neither entity issues mortgages. Neither issues bundled and high-leveraged mortgage-backed instruments. And, to meet FannieMae/FreddieMac _standards_ (yes, they actually have underwriting standards), you can???t just ???state your income??? and get 103% of the appraised value for a mortgage. Also, do you honestly think the "borrow and spend" mentality that the Republicans have followed, with religious fervor, since 1981, has been beneficial to this country. Don't you think it is a wee bit odd that the budget was balanced under Clinton (following year after year of record deficits under Reagan/Bush) and that we're right back to year after year of record deficits under Bush? Where do you think the capital comes from to finance the gazillion dollar deficits that REPUBLICANS run up with their irresponsible tax policies? REPUBLICAN economic policies are as bankrupt as the party has made MY country.
Just over 1,000 voters is not a proper poll and limiting a two party minority control over the 62% total nationally registered essentially NON-PARTISAN requires a proper poll of all six candidates, alphabetical order to prevent any steering, and let the honest opinion poll show a result of asking, after telling them all six can win, and 62% are not registered in the two parties, WHICH CANDIDATE would be the BEST president, and are you voting for the BEST? Every voter owes only THE BEST as their vote, that is the only true democracy. And, since your poll did not offer a proper poll to net honest results, I offer the poll slate due: alphabetical order: Baldwin, Constitutional Party, Barr, Libertarian Party, McCain, Republican Party, McKinney, Green Party, Nader, Independent Candidate, Obama, Democratic Party.
The Democrats are trying to claim a monopoly on the challenge to unseat Republicans. That is NOT the November Vote, it is to ELECT the BEST PRESIDENT not a party.
Obviously abe4600, you don't have a clue about the financial crisis we're involved in at present. Anyone with half a brain KNOWS that the past 8 years didn't cause this problem. History tells us it began with Jimmy Carter and the Community Reinvestment Act. He was the one who started the subprime mortgage loan program to give people who couldn't afford nor should they have been given a loan for a home. This program in the hands of the criminals at FannieMae and FreddieMac, along with their criminal friends in Congress, Christopher Dodd and Barnie Frank, hung this load-stone around America's neck. Now we're going to pay the reaper. And the "messiah", Obama, isn't going to be able to fix it, only compound it. In a way, I hope he does wind because by the end of 4 years, like the fool who plunged us into this mess, Jimmy Carter, you won't be able to find anyone who voted for him. I'd dare say you're probably between 25-35 years of age and too young to remember how crappy live got from 76 to 80 when everybody fell in love with the other messiah, Jimmy Carter. Well, you're going to get to enjoy it for yourself, so strap in and enjoy the ride. Double digit inflation, double digit interest rates, and double digit unemployment. But Obama can fix it. Yeah, RIGHT! Just remember, even the liberal Alec Baldwin admited on Bill Maher's program the other night that Frank and Dodd caused this. And Cramer from Mad Money said the same thing on "The Colbert Report." You idiots are like a broken record, "It's Bushs fault." No, it actually is the Democrats mess, and they won't fix it, they'll just make it worse. It's like asking the fox to watch the hen house. Good luck over the next 4 years
I guess it took a financial crisis to make people understand we can't afford the same old for another 4more years.
