If everyone would read this article...
    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain
Then you'd know who John McCain is... then you'd also know why Barack Obama is leading the polls... and you might wonder why ANYONE would vote for MaCain/Palin. McCain is a phony.

    • Posted By: marksgershenson @ 10/11/2008 3:54:18 PM

The reason Obama is leading in the polls, because of Palin, and the lack of trust by the electorate for McCain to turn the economy around. Its the economy stupid.

Well, we now know who's getting the "stupid" vote. How do Republicans expect to govern (if they ever get elected again) when they insult half the people in the country? "Vote for me because I'm not a commie, socialist liberal, I'm not an Arab Muslim terrorist from Chicago politics who drinks lattes in San Francisco, I don't go to cocktail parties in Georgetown, I'm not in the nazi-liberal media and I won't watch anything but FOX news, I don't work for Hollywood or the entertainment industry or even comedy, I don't even go see comedians, I'm not from the horrible liberal East coast, I despise the New York Times and the pinko Star Tribune, I'm not a professor or thinker, and I don't ever travel to Europe! So, vote for me!" How come Republicans think it's okay to insult people in their own country and then turn around and say how much they love America? It's clear they hate about half or more of America.

Question: As Americans whether we arrived yesterday or with the Mayflower, a sense of and quest for freedom is in our DNA. Is it the ideal of upholding or defending freedom vs honing freedoms with changing times and norms that make us different? Even discussing the big issues today can feel a little like changing deck chairs on the Titanic, so a distinguishable side of leadership takes precedent. Who is it that can bring out the best in individuals to do the right thing, to take responsibility, to inspire calm and reassurance that we can in turn offer to each other is what we need right now. I definitely believe we're all part of the best possible conclusions for the state of things. The leader who can best bring out authenticity and high-minded motivation in constituents is paramount at this time.

Forty4 and his ilk write hate-filled posts. True Americans recoil in disgust from these modern day disciples of Rove and McCarthy.

The bottom line is you can vote for Obama and run the risk that The United States will have massive problems or you can vote for McCain and ensure The United States will have massive problems.

    • Posted By: Independant Voter @ 10/11/2008 3:46:36 PM

No - the choice is change (Obama) - or 4 more years of Bush politics (McCain). It really is that simple.

It's very troubling to read comments where people are claiming Obama is their last best hope. Obama did nothing while in the Illinois State legislature nor has he done anything in the US Senate. When decent people question his experience to be President they are called racists. Obama called Hillary Clinton as well as Bill Clinton racists because they questioned his experience for the job.

You are not allowed to disagree with or criticize Obama without being tarred with the accusation that you are a racist. I don't care what political party you belong to - this kind of behaviour is wrong for America. The diehard supporters of Obama are the biggest racists and haters in America. Vote for the man if you want but stop putting him on a pedestal. He is not God! He is a clever, crafty politician,
    not the saviour.

When he restores the economy, gets us out of Iraq, and does many other things, then you can praise him. But, folks, stop making this man a deity. He has not earned the kind of wild adulation he has been receiving. What has the man accomplished in his life to be treated like he's our last best hope?????

    • Posted By: Independant Voter @ 10/11/2008 3:45:48 PM

Obama is not perfect - but he does offer us hope. Look - McCain is running a dirty campaign - disagreeing is fine - but when they start yelling terrorist and other garbage at his rallies - then it has gone too far.

Simple fact is - Obama offers us a better path to fixing our problems - and McCain offers nothing but anger right now. I choose hope and confidence over hatred.

Who played the financial markets to crash down for Obama's favor? THE TIMING WAS VERY CRITICAL. Right when Mccain was in the lead. How many "international " investors were involved? who is bent to make Barack Husein Obama the POTUS? fIRST THEY PLAYED THE energy crisis. WE beat them. Then they withdrew their holdings and support for our fianancial system. "AMERICA had it coming". WE entertained all these back stabbers who were more than ready to pull the money away from wall street market. All so legally. Govt had to step in to stop the short sale of uSA. YOu liberals who play with antiamerican terrorist coutries, we will let you know you also hold the other end of this stick.

Wow, I knew the republitards would be stumbling over each other trying to figure out how to blame this economic mess on democrats/liberals and this is about the most creative I've seen to date.

You honestly think there is an international conspiracy theory to crash the world's markets and loose trillions of dollars in assets in order to help elect Obama? Are you currently off your prescribed narcotics. I think you need to go check yourself into the nearest psych ward right now!!!

Barack Obama is the better choice for leader of America. We don't want anymore of Bush's lying policies. We want our America back. McCain's another Bush and all he will do is lie to get what he wants.

Obama is getting a bump out of this because people are not being reminded of the whole history where the economy is concerned, and who did what when. Call it bias by omission. The media simply says that the economy is Obamas strong issue, but never discusses the facts in detail. Further, who had a majority when is rarely relevant. If the simplistic Party In Power model were true, then the Democrats would not have needed the House Republicans when they tried to pass the bailout bill, as Democrats have the majority in both houses and there is no threat of a veto. In theory, they do not need the Republicans to vote at all. In fact, something like twelve (12) Democrats from Barney Franks own banking committee voted against the bill. Obviously, it is not so simple and the media does the voter a disservice by doing little more than reinforcing the error. A similar argument would be to say that the economy appeared to be doing fine until the Democrats took over control of Congress and the power of the purse in 2006, then it tanked. As an aside, the media also misleads regarding the Clinton economy when they fail to mention that it also ended in a recession, requiring the first round of Bush stimulus checks immediately after he took office..

Do Obama and the Democrats deserve a lift in the polls as a result of the financial and mortgage problems? The answer from history is a clear NO. Here's the lead of a New York Times story on September 30, 1999:

"Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending" [link below]. That's 1999 folks. Clinton Administration, I believe.

Here's the lead of a New York Times story on Sept. 11, 2003:

"The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago. "[see link below] The Democrats killed the reforms.

McCain said in co-sponsoring the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190:

"If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole. The Democrats killed the Bill.

What was Barney Frank and fellow Democrats saying at the time of these attempted reforms? According to reports, Representative Barney Frank(D-MA) claimed of the thrifts :

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis, the more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

Representative Mel Watt (D-NC) added of the reforms "I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing." [ See Community Reinvestment Act,

Just wondering exactly how as the Republicans controlled the Senate at that time.

Because it takes 60 votes to get anything through. Frank and Dodd voted party line to stop it.

quasqueton : You appear to have been brainwashed by the McShame Campaign; Obama may not be perfect but he is steady and consistent in crisis and it is his core values and beliefs that guild him and ground him. McShame has surrendered everything decent about him in a desperate run for the presidency. It is difficult to define his values when they appear to change at every juncture of his campaign.

  • Posted By: neos @ 10/11/2008 1:02:42 PM

Senator Obama's core decency and obvious desire to help the common man trumps bigotry and stifles character assassination attempts. Americans know the real deal when they see it.

The right-wing conservative extreme faction of the Republican party forces McCain to sell his integrity and to adopt Rovian dirty politics. America says, 'Not this time!'
