I guess Johathon Alter studied history with Joe Biden. VP wannabee Joe, said FDR went on TV in 1929. TV wasn't invented until 1939; FDR wasn't president until 1933. Alter says FDR calmed the nation against "fear itself" during the bnaking crises. Huh? FDR used that phrase to calm the country after Pearl Harbor.

Another silly idea in this article is that the McCain campaign attacks are confusing McCain supporters. Not quite. I attended a Palin rally. The only comment she made that brought the entire audience to its feet was when she said she would be taking off the gloves. The McCain/Palin supporters want a more aggressive campaign AND ARE NOT CONFUSED.

The reason the Obama campaign has been dissemmbling about Ayers is they know informed people will ask what Obama did for 4 years on Ayers foundation. What did Obama do with $50 million in funding he was in charge of. Then we will get a glimpse of what an Obama Presidency. Millions and billions wasted on radical leftist programs that accomplish nothing.

When Palin burst on the scene at the RNC, the Obama campaign was knocked sideways. You could see the intimidation in Barack himself. He could recognize what we know: Obama is all talk; Palin is all action. While Palin delivered a $13 million sports center for her town, Obama was frittering away $50 million on worthless leftist educational initiatives. So the Obama campaign does what its good at. Hide his record, go on the attack.

      "FDR wasn't president until 1933"

Actually, he wasn't president until 1934. He was elected in 1933, deary.

    • Posted By: getAgripUSA @ 10/12/2008 1:35:33 PM

I find it most amusing that you find $13m spent on sports more worthy than $50m spent on education. I can tell you the only action that Palin would be good for. And it doesn't get actioned in office. Unless your name is Bill...

The only job Palin should earn with her intelligence is a cashier at the local Friendly's. And no, the dinosaur nuggets aren't 4,000 years old.

    • Posted By: simonanunhappydem @ 10/11/2008 6:14:06 PM

What exactly were Palin's actions? Nothing, zilch, nada. Unless you count misusing her power to fire a commissioner who did not want to fire the ex husband of her sister. Great accomplishment from a governor! She has no qualification to serve as governor, and even less qualification to serve in any national role. Anyone who would consider voting for McCain should change his mind because of this totally irresponsible VP candiadte election.

Its common political practice for both parties to pay organizers, although it is usually the DNC or RNC that pays rather than the campaign. And your point is.....?

I, heard McCain make the comment "my fellow prisoners" and was so stunned that I didn't follow the rest of his comments. What went through my mind was, "WHY is he addressing his fellow prisoners, has this guy reverted to the VietNam war?? My inclination is McCain is suffering from the pangs of dementia or Altzheimers where memories from long ago are vivid but short memory is gone. The fact he did NOT CORRECT himself is an issue of great concern. When was the last time John McCain had a mental evaluation? Perhaps one of the very reasons McCain has allowed the ROVE CLONE to take over him and his campaign is because McCain can no longer think for himself?? Remember, one of his campaign heads stated, "John McCain does not speak for the campaign" when McCain said something that was not part of the ROVE script. I believe all of us must consider that McCain in not mentally stable and is contributing to his misstatements and erratic behavior. We cannot afford to have someone with this degree of mental deficiencies as our leader. Sarah Palin is not an intellect and knows nothing about how to lead the country, although, I must agree she is McCain's robotic high-heeled hyena with lipstick and knows how to work up their supporters to the pitch of a mob, "kill him", "off with his head", "traitor", "Arab", etc. These "partners and soulmates" are instigating, inciting, encouraging, condoning, and promoting hatred, bigotry, resentment, racism, and downright ugliness! Remember, hatred begets hatred, bigotry begets bigotry, resentment begets resentment, racism begets racism, and ugliness begets ugliness! Those horrific republicans in their rallies who are shouting such vile rhetoric are only FOLLOWING McCain and Palin and reflecting the hatred, bigotry, resentment and ugliness which McCain and Palin exemplify. These "partners and soulmates" have sold their souls to the devil (or Sarah's witches) in their efforts to gain the White House. Neither is fit for these high positions in our leadership. Should they win, will we be known as the nation of hatred, bigotry, resentment, racism, and ugliness?? The world already has lost a lot of respect for America, put these two into the positions of power and the world will lose total respect for America. McCain's and Pilan's remind me of the lynching mobs of the 1960s!!

I agree with you. I watched McCain closely during his last Presidential bid and this is not the same man...he has declined in both a physical and mental way. He seems honestly confused at times and unfocused. He then has moments of clarity and seems to be surprised at what is happening around him (as at a couple of recent rallies when he was forced to refute the comments of some of his audience). I also felt the same way about RR and we all learned why a few years later. Anyone who has worked with the elderly, or cared for their elderly parents, see the signs quicker than do others. He does not need to be President at this time in his life and I think we all can agree that Sarah Palin should NEVER be. I am so sorry that McCain was forced to accept her as a VP to appease the far right. It is a pity that he has to end his career in this fashion.

The far bigger issue with the way the RepubliCONs are responding seems to me to be what we can expect from them after Obama is inaugurated. I remember well the obstructionist turn of mind the right wing nuts had after Clinton won in 92. We are facing make or break, practically life and death, issues at the moment. Can the wing nuts put it aside and contribute, or will they simply be in the way?

Expecting Republican rebuttal to be like this:

      - Hey, Obama's middle name is Hussein....

Both Rove and Palin are in contempt of court for failing to testify when subpoenaed. And yes, Rove needs a Republican President to pardon his sorry @ss for all the crimes he has perpetrated during the Bush administration.

Bush was a Rove puppet. The next Rove puppet up for inspection is Sarah Palin. How much do you bid for this Lenscrafters model turned politician, America?

Actually, I would vote for Rove before I would vote for Palin. If you have to have corruption, you should want the puppet master instead of the puppet. It makes for a better show.

Sorry if I sound cynical. I am one of millions of angry Republicans who feel that the GOP has been taken over and destroyed by this toxic maniac, Rove.

        But I'm still a republican...

In an election season rapidly drawing to a close, the last few days have all but sealed the deal for Obama. The worst part of the triple whammy that has hit the McCain campaign - Troopergate report, increased negativity in ads, and the over-the-top anger and blatant racism at their rallies - is that any constructive message that might let him back into this race has been obscured. Obama gets to talk about his plans for the economy and appear forward-thinking and statesmanlike, while McCain and Palin are forced to play defense for another week and the press is covering their problems instead of their platform, as much as one exists. Palin has given up attracting any new supporters and is strictly focused on the base's cultural agenda, and when was the last time the press focused on McCain's economic platform in a positive way? An old quote from a early 20th century Southern pol goes something like, "The only way I lose this election is if I'm caught in a hotel room with a dead girl or a live boy." Obama's smart enough to sleep alone for the next month.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 10/12/2008 8:32:25 PM

Triple S, if the "deal is sealed" in Obama's favor, as you seem to think, then God help us all, and God have mercy on those who put him there, for their fate is, also, sealed. At least the rest of us have known what to expect if Obama wins, and are prepared for it, should it happen, but the poor mis-guided souls who were dense enough to actually be taken in by his ability to "charm", keep in mind, so was Hitler able to "charm" with his promises, which we all know the out come of that. The scenario Obama paints is one of a change that seems to promise a Utopia, but in reality, will prove to be one of change to the end of American freedom, to everything we have always valued, but if you people want a "changed" America to a Communistic type society, where the goverment becomes a dictatorship instead of a goverment "of the people, for the people, & by the people", then your dreams will have come true. What you, also, need to understand is that you may not be voting for Obama, per sae, but for a Muslim terrorist group who is possibly backing him, and operating from behind the scenes and out of the middle east to get him into power, then they will be the real ones who will run the country, but, as I said, if thats what your goals are, then all thats left to say is good luck.

    .
    Hi Mr. Jonathan Alter,

The content of this article is worth the time to mentally digest. I too have begun to wonder whether McCain has a strong enough hand to lead this country, or whether McCain will be a worse version of Bush, allowing others to tell him how to think.

Imagine McCain wins the election and soon after the same people that forced him to select Palin over Lieberman and Tom Ridge for VP, are now arm twisting more concessions from McCain via Sarah Palin. Now that is scary.

P.S. . . And like the previous poster (ClassicGirl79), I too will never forget the "gray-head lady in red" at McCain's rally. Honestly, I cannot figure out why so many people of 'supposed semi-intelligence' thinks Obama is a Muslim, or Arab, or anything but a true Christian believer?

    • Posted By: dsqard @ 10/12/2008 10:26:34 AM

Perusing-through, the reason that some people still believe that Obama is a muslim is because I think the Republican party has been more than happy to allow their "followers" to continue to repeat the lie. I think that the people who truely believe it still are hiding from themselves. I think they just can't stand the idea that a black man could be president but don't want to admit it to themselves. It is not "politically correct" to not want to vote for him because he is black, but it is more acceptable to not vote for him because he is a muslim. They are deluding themselves so that they can feel better about themselves. In the long run, does the excuse really matter? It is still nothing but racial hatred rearing it's ugly head. We have come far but we still have a long way to go.

      • Posted By: Pallisor @ 10/12/2008 12:05:14 PM

Obama did study the religion... and he made this comment on ABC to George Stepponopolus a few weeks ago:

"Let's not play games, what I was suggesting - you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you're absolutely right that that has not come."

Stepponopolus had to correct him to: "you mean.... your Christian faith?"

dsqard, according to you if we have a question about this, we're all hateful racists.

        I don't EVEN think so.

          Racists? Maybe. Stupid? Definitely.

The smears aren't going to win you this election. The fact that you haven't figured this out yet speaks to your intelligence; mainly your lack thereof.

NEWS ALERT: McCain/Palin indicate American citizen worst terrorist!

With no mention of Osama Bin Laden or Al Qaeda, McCain/Palin have indicated that an American white man named Bill Ayers is "The Terrorist" of this era.

Incredibly, McCain/Palin believe that Bill Ayers has no redemptive value, while even Al Qaeda thinks that Osama Bin Laden does!?

The American people should ask McCain/Palin if Albert Pike had any redemptive value.

The American people and the World are suppose to believe that an American white man is so vile and toxic that simply being near him makes you guilty of "palling around with terrorists."

These sentiments being advocated by McCain/Palin against another American citizen, in light of the acts Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda have committed against America, are truly reprehensible!

Further, McCain/Palin "must" be held accountable for their efforts to incite violence against Senator Obama at their rallies. Even people attending those rallies report that the atmosphere is xenophobic and racially tinged.

America has this unfettered hubris about not wanting to be warned when her actions are opening the proverbial Pandora's box, but there is a tsunami of "change" moving throughout America and the world and...

It's really amazing that you can rant about something you have no knowledge of. This man Bill Ayers? You don't know a thing about him and yet you dismiss who he is, his connection with barry and the fact that he is a domestic terrorist whose group bombed the Capital building, the Pentagon and multiple government buildings in NY, including a police station. That trio sound familiar: NY, the Capital and the Pentagon? Members of his group also shot and killed in cold blood two policemen and a security guard in an attempted Brinks heist. Killed American citizens in an act of domestic terrorism. Kathy Boudin convicted for her role and presently incarcerated has a son who is being raised by Ayers and Dohrn. The connections go on and on, including barry's connection to Arab money that runs the Daley Machine. It all goes to judgment, which was his man platform and yet when he was claiming such this information was written and documented in Newsweek and websites such as citizensagainstpro-obamaMSMbias.blogspot.com and rezkowatch but the MSM hid it. Mr Man of Judgment:

That was not the Tony Rezko I knew (for 20 years and 2004 campaign finance advisor).
That was not the William Ayers I knew (for over 10 years and campaign contributor $200 in 2001).
That was not the Bernadette Dohrn I knew (when I spoke at conferences with her or when she hosted my first fundraiser in 1995).
That was not the Rev Wright I knew (for over 20 years, based my book on a sermon he gave about WHITE MAN'S GREED, appointed to my official presidential campaign after he raged at his Christmas service that Hillary ain't never been called no n**ger and refused to fire him until I was forced to and didn't completely distance myself from him until he said the same things i admitted I knew about - but wasn't in the pew for -- in front of the press corps.

Say what you will about convicted of campaign finance pay-to-play felon, persona friend and primary fundraiser Tony Rezko, domestic terrorists Dohrn & Ayers whose contribution he has never donated to charity - but appointing Wright to an official campaign position knowing and admitting he knew about Wright's anti-American, anti-white American, anti-Semite GODDAM the US of KKK A and who blames the deaths of 2973 American citizens and foreign nationals (masterminded by that osama bin laden) on the US is evidence of beyond poor judgment. He thinks his judgment (politically expedient speech that there is no video/audio evidence of and was not covered or mentioned in the papers the next day) trumps his judgment in 2008 as a presidential candidate.

Absolutely ludicrous. Will it matter? Not unless his crazy old uncle breaks free of his NOI captors. Had McCain picked Romney? And had the pro-obama MSM looked into these things instead of hiding and refusing to investigate them, SHRC would likely be the nominee and no way that could happen.

Amazing how two or more people can look at the same situation, yet see it differently; since both can not be correct, then, apparently, someone is wrong. Also, I find it strangely superficial that such negative focus is placed on the subject or persons whom the writter is not particularly in favor of, but the the other side of the coin is never shown, just as the other party of interest is never focused on in a negative way, although there is a mountain of evidence of misbehavior just waiting to be uncovered and brought to light, in fact has been uncovered and made public by those who are consistant enough to expose it, people who want the WHOLE truth, not just a one-sided version. SOMETHING is going "OFF THE RAILS", alright, but, as I stated earlier, its strange how some people can see the truth, but others, who look at the SAME thing, see it different. Hummm...yes, there definitely may be a conspiracy going on, but don't see it as a conservative one as much as I do a liberal one attempting to make it look like a conservative one. Don't try to insult people's intelligence, just makes their distrust reach even greater heights.

I have to agree. McCain has made many very bad steps in his blind ambition to be Prez. #1is hiring Rove and his mean men, the very people who denigrated him in 2000. #2 Putting Palin on his ticket was the most disasterous thing he could have done. We as a country need to come together as a nation. Not this pit-bull with lipstick who won't even show up on Meet the Press, or any other news program. #3 Running all of those negative ads lately. It shows desperation on his part, that he'll do anything, step on anyone to get what he wants all the while accusing Obama of 'Blind Ambition" What the Hell?? God help us if he is elecdted to the highest office at his age and Palin puts something in his metamusil and she becomes the President. The Main Stream Media needs to look at both of the Palins record with the AIP. She is the scariest thing I seen in a long time. Is she the seperated twin of Dick Cheney at birth? We need to come together as a nation, not condone racial epithets and slurs that are so hurtful to the very soul of our great naation. One concerned person in California.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 10/12/2008 7:45:35 PM

Cherrie, I an not concerned with who doesn't show up for a Meet The Press interview, or about lipstick & pig jokes; what I am concerned with is someone who wants to be my president who will not even salute the flag, who refuses to participate in the singing of our national athem, and whose affiliations with known terrorists is well documented. I an concerned with that person's close friendship with a minister whom I watched say "No! Not God Bless America! God dam America!" I am concerned that the friendship with afore mentioned minster was put on hold due to pressure, until the election is over. I am concerned with the potential first lady who said that it was the first time she had ever been proud of America when her husband was nominated for the president position; was she not pround of Martin Luther King's accomplishments. of our role in civil rights, of our military for keeping our freedom intact during World War Two? The list could go on concerning the things she could have pointed out to be proud of, but she was only proud of the fact that she might get the chance to be First Lady of the U.S.A if her husband became president. Does that not seem a bit self centered to you? Sure, she may have been a child when some of our proudest moments took place, so was I, so were many people, but we went to school, we were taught about those times, we read about them, we were told stories of them by people who had experienced them. Michelle Obama went to very prestigious schools, so did her husband, Barack Obama, so if they grew up poor, as has been stated, then who paid for these fine educations---grants? scholarships? working? Maybe. All that traveling Obama did, around the world, took money, so if he was as poor as claimed, then how was that afforded? I sure was never able to do that, and we were not poor, just middle class. Hard questions deserve straight answers---not mumblings and evasion which are an attempt to steer us away from those questions. McCain's & Palin's lives and problems have been right out front for the whole world to view, so why hasn't Obama been given the same scrutiny? Could it be that he is only the front person, the mouthpiece, the puppet, and the real brains behind the whole choreorgaphy of his campaign is hard at work behind the scenes, waiting and hoping for him to win so that they can take over? People such as Muslim maffia types, who are contributing a lot of $$$ to his campaign? You lefties had better do your homework on this guy. There is a video on Youtube by a man who claims he had several homosexual encounters with Obama, and did drugs with him, although Obama claims his drug use was limited to when he was a teenager. He was not a teensger when this man knew him, he was a full adult. Web address is: larrysinclair.org

  • Posted By: Mwalimu @ 10/12/2008 4:39:05 PM

Jonathan Alder's got it wrong. McCain's does not lack toughness - he lacks character and integrity.

An excellent example is John McCain and Sarah Palin's decision to attack Obama by ridiculing his middle name. According to Palin, Hussein = terrorist = Muslim.

Understandably, as a native of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin does not know much about the rest of the world. Therefore, she does not understand that Hussein is not an strange or exotic name. In fact, if you used Google and traced the origin of that name, you'd know that Hussein means both good and handsome. It's no small wonder that Hussein is one of the most popular names in the world. Who wouldn't want to be named Hussein?

In fact, Hussein was the surname of one of my students a wonderful, diligent, graceful young lady. Her father, Mr. Hussein, was a concerned, loving, supportive parent who often checked in with me to find out his daughter was doing in my class. As a public employee, I do not know anything about Mr. Hussein's religious beliefs. However, if I were apply the precepts of the Book of James in the Bible, which measures faith by works, I have to say Mr. Hussein's religious beliefs (or lack thereof) were far more worthy of God that the superstitious nonsense spewed from the pulpit of the Wasilla Assembly of God that produced an ignorant bigot like Sarah Palin.

Beyond maligning people's names, Palin and McCain are attacking the loyalty and patriotism of millions of American Muslims, some of whom are serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. The anti-Islamic fervor of Palin's campaign reminds me of the anti-Semitism of Central Europe in the 1930's. And increasingly, a McCain rally reminds me of a cross-burning lynch mob of Ku Klux Klan, and probably attracts its share of Klansmen as well. No one is safe. From attacking Muslims, it will be easy to attack Latinos, African-Americans, Jews, gays... any one who is not "an American like the rest of us."

McCain and Palin are anti-American. They are assaulting the very principles and ideals that this country represents. They are a disgrace to America. Every member of the Republican party, as well as their apologists in the media, should hang their heads in shame.

It behooves every patriotic American to denounce the fear, ignorance, and bigotry that the GOP is using to win votes. McCain and his Republican allies offer us fear and hate. Obama and his Democratic allies offer us courage and hope. Let's vote for hope.

Mwalimu, it always strikes me as so strange that truth can sound like an alien language to some people. Does your ears not work normally? You actually believe that just because someone resides in Alaska, they don't know much about the rest of the world??!! Alaska is another planet! Yes, Alaskans know about the rest of the world, probably a lot better than you do. Are you nuts??! Strike that, i already know the answer. I suppose if Sarah Palin had lived in New Jersey, or Chicago or any other city, you would have made the same dumb comment. It would not matter where she lived, just that she lives. Suppose I said that Obama couldn't possibly know anything about the rest of the world because he is from Chicago, and everyone knows that Chicago is full of gangster types and is so windy that any common sense one had was blown away with too many gusts of wind, one of which was coming from Obama himself. As for McCain/Palin using Obama's middle name----grow up, its politics! Obams used the Bible, for crying out loud in an attempt to prove a point, which fell flat. Obama has consistantly spoken things against McCain that he thinks may help his side, but I suppose you choose to ignor that. Its called politics, and politics has always been a dirty game. I don't think too many people are impressed with Obama or his name, and could it be the fact that just seven years ago we were hit big time by Muslim terrorist, so now we are very suspicious of people who fits that discription, and whose beliefs and affilations are questionable? Thats called human nature, and we are filled with human nature, so expect that we will not flock to people who we are suspicious of. Its not personal, its common sense, which, most of us are, also, full of. In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future.
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything in the last 80 years.
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He didnt realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that .
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

cani, McCain not only understands the economy, he knows who is responsible for the mess we're in, and so do the American people, and he does know how to fix it. Your mentor may very well be correct in his assessment of what to expect in the next couple of years, that is, if Obama is elected; you will see the "change" he speaks of, but it will not be the change you're expecting, nor the one you will like. I will hate to be an "I warned you" person, because I will be experiencing the downfall of our country right along with the people who were dumb enough to put their trust in a windbag who is full of hot air, and if given the oppertunity, will prove it. He will fall flat on his face, but by the time he does, it may be too late for us to recover. I, also, foresee, that if Obama makes it to the president's office, and he and his "backers", whom many believe are residing currently in the middle east, in fact were born there, and if he proceeds to put his "changes" into effect, many people will finally see him for who he really is, and his life won't be worth a $3.00 bill, there are some who will not take kindly to their freedom being stomped on. So, go ahead and hit that stupid button on election day, then sit back and wait for things to REALLY become a mess! As for me and my family, if the wrong one gets in, we will be residing in Switzerland for the rest of our lives, because we do not want any part of what will be taking place in our once lovely America. The idiots want it, they can take it to hell with them, but God have mercy on the ones dumb enough to fall for the BIG LIE.

Although I am a staunch Obama supporter, I, too, am disappointed to see Sen. John McCain engage in the very same campaign tactics that he once (rightfully) denounced. I absolutely deplore the "politics of personal destruction". They should have no place in electing our President--or the local dogcatcher for that matter. There can and should be heated debate between the candidates on issues and policies, but the personal attacks must go. They reflect badly not only on those who engage in them but on our country itself. The nation is facing a true crisis, and the last thing we need is more hate and polarization. We need to come together as a nation and figure out a way for ALL of us to get through these difficult times. In my view Sen. Obama is the better candidate to take us in the right direction. (Incidentally, I'm a 71 year old white female--supposedly planted firmly in the McCain camp, right? NOT! Hope there are lots more out there like me.)

Hello Elizabeth R. I very much respect your opinion. i suggest you go to You Tube and view a few videos of Obama supporters' vicious attacks on Palin-McCain - just like they did against Sen Clinton and her voters. Obama's campaign is anything but above the fray. Did you watch Obama's ad: McCain's rage a national security issue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAyK-enrF1g

See how much obama respects a former POW. How he uses the same old 3am argument that he attacked Sen Clinton for fearmongering. That ad goes well beyond fear mongering. And McCains's ads may have 100% negative but Obama's were 34% negative and outnumbered McCain's 3 to 1. Do the math.

Fact is American populace are now more independent at making up their m ind (thanks to technology advancement), unlike in the past when GOP controls the media and as such find it easier to spread lies and fears about any opponent. I used to like and respect Mr. McCain, not any more-- for the past few weeks the way he was engaged in inciting angry and raw emotions that we have seen from his rally, I am very scared the way he is conducting his campaign. These tactics beneath a national hero and he has done enough to his image, even if he is elected I do not think democratic congress would embrace him, he would be lame-duck president from the start

    • Posted By: star3 @ 10/13/2008 7:40:03 PM

Reg, this may come as a shock, so hope your system can take it, but congress may not remain in Democrat control much lo9nger, people, even Democrats are getting sick of them and their childish behavior. There should be a time limit on a senator's service--two terms max. More people are beginnibg to want that, so it may be made a law soon.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 10/14/2008 4:05:10 PM

Who do you think would lose in a deal like that?

Here's a funny fact. The 1994 "Contract with America" as espoused by Newt Gingrich and largely responsible for the Republican takeover of Congress mentions "term limits" as one of its tenants. Guess what happened when the Republicans took over? That's right. Suddenly term limits were no longer cool.

President Obama will likely have a healthy Democratic majority in both houses of Congress come this January. The ball will be in their court to produce for the American people. If they don't, I expect the pendulum to swing back the other way, as it tends to do.

  • Posted By: jon-jon alter @ 10/13/2008 7:01:12 AM

JONJON long time no see. Bet you were the weasel behind the cover photo.

ACORN was brought up when Sen Clinton was still running because of the (now confirmed) probarry voter registration fraud, especially in Lake County, IN. When all is said and done, when all the caucus and voter registration fraud is exposed, Sen Clinton will be proven to have had the most votes. But what is she doing? Out campaigning for barry when he has not had the integrity to come clean to the black community that she and Mr Bill are not racists. The fact that he has not done this and continues to use them to stump only reveals his egomania and complete lack of character. And the fact that it took him so long to reach out to Mr Bill, the only Demo to win against the GOP in 28 yrs and continues to allow him to be attacked about his supposed disloyalty to the party is despicable.

Why did the GOP stay in the lead until the economy tanked? Because axelrod (the brainchild of the "most amazing campaign in history") had absolutely no experience against the GOP. And had there been no economy? Had McCain picked Romney? What type of American allows the last president of economic prosperity and peace to continue to be painted a racist while he is out stumping so barry can be elected?

    Judgment?

Seen any of those pink-faced presidential failures out on the stump? Kerry, Dean, Dodd, Judas, Edwards and all the others who raged at Sen Clinton to get out of the race? Barbie Pelosi or Donna Brazile? Roland Martin, Rep Clyburn, Rep Lewis who are happy to talk about what racists "The Clintons" are? Keith Boykin, Michelle Bernard, Tanya Acker, Jamal Simmons and all the other "strategists" who were more than happy to rage at "Hillary" to just get out so she wouldn't dent the chosen one's halo? How many times have they raged at THAT WOMAN, who was campaigning for barry before he became the nominee? How much time has Bernard spent ragging about "Clinton fatigue" and referring to Mr Bill's "Global whatever Initiative" (which she didn't even know happens every fall explaining his press junket) vs registering the EIGHT MILLION eligible black voters? Bob Herbert? Gene Robinson?

How many churches has Revs Sharpton/Rivers PERSONALLY visited to register those EIGHT MILLION eligible black voters? How many of the black politicians, pundits, strategists and cowardly journalists have PERSONALLY gone into their communities and PERSONALLY helped register voters?

How many of those who make a living trashing "The Clintons' (including Chelsea) have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help the first black man be elected president?

How many continue to yak about the BITTER WHITE RACISTS have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help elect the man who has for the first time made them feel proud about their country?

How many race based inflammatory columns on HES BLACK! & BLACK AIDS! (AIDS arose in Africa) vs calling on black voters and community lead

    • Posted By: jon-jon alter @ 10/13/2008 8:35:23 AM

Talk about race all you want, rag on "The Clintons" and rage against all those bitter, unenlightened, white voters who have antipathy towards those not like then and prefer to cling to their bibles and guns, and in the end, if barry loses, it will be those 8 MILLION non-votes that kept barry from becoming president. The numbers won't lie. It won't be because WHITE AMERICA voted against him -- it will be because BLACK AMERICA couldn't be bothered. 2 MILLION votes separated Bush and Kerry and even less with Gore.

And Barry needs to publicly state that "The Clintons" are not racists. He needs to give them more than the 17 words of "lavish praise" he begrudgingly offered to each in his Styrofoam pillar acceptance speech. Much more heinous--the messiah gave Senator Ted Kennedy only nine words: "To Ted Kennedy, who embodies the spirit of service???" and then semi-coloned him with the Clintons.

      Not even a full sentence.

"Spirit of service"? Sen Kennedy embodies more than that. He has spent 46 years accomplishing real change - not just loftily proposing it. He made the arduous trip to Denver against medical advice, flying at altitudes that posed a serious, potentially fatal, risk. He didn't let brain cancer, brain surgery, chemotherapy or radiation stop him. He did it for barry. He did it for the Democratic party. He did it for the Kennedy legacy and because he understood the significance of his mission. But most of all, he did it to inspire the American people as only he can. And barry couldn't even give him a full sentence of meaningful gratitude. That is egomania of delusional messianic proportions. What has barry actually accomplished other than going on a world tour which didn't include visiting maimed and injured and spiritually broken American heroes lying in a hospital on foreign soil? He owes Senator Kennedy much more than that. Of whom have you heard more from barry: The father he met once or Senator Ted Kennedy, who traveled across country to hand him the torch?

He needs to acknowledge Senator Kennedy publicly. And then he needs to apologize publicly to Sen Clinton and the voters he trashed. And Mrs Obama needs to finally admit publicly that Senator Clinton's generation directly impacted HER life in more ways than cracking a glass ceiling that appears will never be shattered. Her daughters and her daughters' generation's future is up to her. Barry is going to need every last Senator Clinton holdout, even though he arrogantly said: I will get her voters but she will not get all of mine. I have the video somewhere.

Disclaimer: I did not vote for Senator Clinton or for Senator McCain.

      • Posted By: star3 @ 10/13/2008 7:19:05 PM

Jon Jon, The "White Voters", as YOU refer to them don't give a rat's fat butt about the color of a candidate, they vote for the POLICIES--not the dammed color of one's skin! What the blazes does one's color, for God's sake, have to do with their ability to perform as president?!? I am white, and I have NEVER heard one--not one white make any negative comment on the color issue, but I have heard a LOT of blacks make comments concerning "HOW WHITES FEEL OR THINK.", so, tell us again how whites are the ones who are racial, tell us again how whites will be responsible if Obama loses; I heard a man just recently say he would never vote for Obama, that he felt the blacks were being exploited by him, and he would abandon them once he was elected, and that man who said that was BLACK! He was, also, very annoyed that Obama would use blacks in an attempt to gain his goals. You could not be more wrong, Jon Jon, so stop attempting to know how whites feel or think, because as far as I have seen, there Is racist going on, but its NOT coming from the whites! I'm not denying that there are whites who are racist, but from where I sit, I see more of it coming from the blacks, so stop being so dam bitter about color, WE didn't make you black, and frankly, most of us don't give a fig if people are black, white, purple or green with yellow poka dots, as long as they are nice people, and capable of the office they are running for. Condi Rice or Colin Powell would have gotten our votes in a heartbeat, but neither of them wanted to run for the office, and, personally, I don't blame them, its a very6 stressful job. We aren't voting for McCain because he is white, we are voting for him because we trust him more than we do Obama---simple as that. So, you can either accept that or not; like Rhett Butler said in "Gone With The Wind", Frankly, my dear, I don't give a dam!

We need our Bibles to give us hope when things look like there is no hope, we need our guns for protection against jerks who think they are above the law, or that they can get away with breaking the law and taking advantage of those who are physically weaker, so our gun is an "equalizer". Yeah, we'll keep on "clinging" to them.

Unfortunately ,McCain has to walk a thin line. We all know that politics is a dirty mud sling. That is the way the game has been played since George Washington. However, this is our first campaign where there is a man of color, so people are sensative about color. Is is an attack to ask what did Barack Obama say to Ayers that so inspired Ayers to launch Obama's career? What did Obama do during the 20 years he sat in that his church that he now decries? Why does Obama refuse to release his most basic records?. Obama is a blank slate from his past to is public uniform. I have never seen him in a Aloha shirt, no baseball cap, he leaves himself and his past a blank slate and people are all too willing to blindly follow this man with a sealed history. Again I ask where are his high school photos. Where are his Aloha friends? Where are all these records?

McCain is a [Acorn Man] and other Republicans too !!!

40% of Acorn's Registered Voters have been [Republicans]

      Hahahaha !!

On Monday, the Democratic-leaning group ACORN, which has been painted as a criminal enterprise by the GOP for its voter registration and housing policy efforts, pushed back against its critics by producing a photo of John McCain attending its March 2006 rally.

It was a reminder that, for all their electoral histrionics, Republicans have aligned themselves with ACORN in the past.

Indeed, in addition to the McCain photo, there is a host of examples of prominent McCain surrogates attending ACORN events, signing ACORN legislation, or complimenting the group's efforts.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, for example, partnered with ACORN in March 2008 for a "Homeownership Promotes The Economy" taskforce. More recently, Crist declared that -- contrary to GOP outrage -- he was not upset with the group's voter registration efforts in his state. The New York Times reported that ACORN supported a law signed by Governor Crist, which "changed the rules last year to restore the voting rights of about 112,000 former convicts."

In July 2005, meanwhile, another Republican governor, Rick Perry of Texas, signed ACORN's Lending Law Reform Bill that changed the state's homelending practices.

In July 2008, California Governor and McCain supporter Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that ACORN helped draft aimed at California homeowners facing foreclosure.

In June 2007, Minnesota Governor and McCain VP short-lister Tim Pawlenty signed a similar bill -- drafted by ACORN -- that helped homeowners get fairer deals on their mortgages.

"The legislation was drafted according to recommendations made by a predatory lending study group established by Swanson prior to the legislative session," wrote the Northwestern Financial Review. "The study group contained representatives from the banking industry and the mortgage brokers association, as well as consumer advocates from organizations such as Illegal Aid and ACORN."

As Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney signed an anti-predatory lending bill that ACORN supported. In February 2006, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman met with the ACORN Katrina Survivors Association. And back in July 2005, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg actually got a kiss from ACORN's state leader, according to the publication City Limits, during an announcement that the city would protect or create 65,000 affordable units in a new housing proposal. Bloomberg, it should be noted, has not endorsed a candidate.

Palin has 10 times the 'magic' when she speaks on TV. Lieberman may be a great friend and politician, but he and McCain don't communicate that well on TV. McCain's fight isn't with the GOP, he has a true battle against Obama.
The 'Arab' comment is a simple summary of what people think they're seeing. Obama is deceiving us about who he really is. Refer to Malcolm Gladwell, 'Blink'. Conservatives know what they see, yet don't know quite how to say it. Obama's birth father was Muslim, his adoptive father was Muslim, his mother married two Muslim men. He was registered in an Indonesian school as Muslim. Indonesia is the largest Muslim nation in the world. When did Obama stop being Muslim and why does he say he has always been Christian? When he did join a church, its pastor was a 'former' Muslim, and clearly not mainstream or orthodox in an American understanding of protestant Christianity. Is he lying about who he is and what he believes? Why do his choices as an adult put him in association with the New Party, Ayers, Rev. Wright, and Chicago politics? He has the most liberal voting record in congress. Does he really want to destroy corporate America and replace it with socialism?
McCain's biggest problem is that he is following the rules too closely. He is a military man and he is campaigning by the book. He is allowing Obama to tell us who he is. McCain should be telling us who Obama has proven himself to be. Obama's line, 'they want to talk about me, not policy' is an admission that he is unelectable if people realize who he is. We're voting for a person to lead not the best policy wonk.

      • Posted By: Baked Alaska @ 10/12/2008 4:49:36 PM

Too bad Randy, you don't know what socialism is. Actually you probably mean communism which isn't the same thing at all. Canada is a socialistic society, as are the Scandinavian countries. Here are some truths about these countries: Just last week, Canada's banking system was rated #1 in the world (the US came in at 40th); Canada and Scandinavia students rate in the top 12 in yearly international comparisons in math, science and language (the US finishes 24th or lower); these countries don't go to war on lies (but Canada entered a bonafide war (WWII) long before the US; when soldiers return home to these countries, they are not found sleeping under viaducts; when families need medical treatments for their children in these countries, they are not forced into bankruptcy.........the list is long. By the way, Canada is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world.
As long as "corporate America" can make one slim dime, it will flourish.
Finally: I take it you don't use public libraries, public schools, public transit, public roads, feel safe because of public law enforcement.........here too the list is long and very, very SOCIALISTIC!

Government by magic hasn't been tried for long time now, unless you want to count Raygun's voodoo economics, especially as practiced by Dubya, as a special case of it. So much for Palin's credentials according to Higgins.
