This is a red herring in the campaign. The financial crisis is an obvious disaster that needs attention but talk about taxes, cutting programs, stimulus plans are really premature. You don't plan recovery for the patient until he stabilizes and stops hemorrhaging and the causes of the disease are clearly understood. So far, George Soros appears to be the most definitive expert on this crisis and its solution. His ideas need to be studied to see how the US can work its way forward. Right now our elected leaders and candidates are not equipped and should not be wasting time trying to solve a problem that is beyond their grasp. Columnists like Fineman, Brokaw, etc. should stop whining and sniping unless they have something constructive to offer. So far they seem very ignorant.

I think the candidates DO know what to say -- especially Obama -- but as much as "undecided" voters claim that "don't have enough information," the fact is they will only grasp platitudes. Those smart enough to understand nuance have already made up their minds on whom to elect so adding detail won't help. The candidate who tells it like it is will lose votes, especially in these last weeks while both must play to low-information voters. Drinking Beer and Talking Politics at an 8th Grade Level...

If the average American is reading at the 8th grade level, it would not be politically expedient to go into the complexities of why the average American will eventually need to pay more taxes.

As the complexity of the issue increases, the number of Americans that understand decreases, and politicians who go on such suicidal endeavors lose a proportionate number of voters.

This is the reason Americans have been parody as people who elect Presidents that they want to have a beer with, because half the stuff politicians deal with are too complex for the average American to fully understand and for politicians to articulate.

The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything in the last 80 years.
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy.He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He didnt realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?

Excuse me, Mr. Fineman, but please tell me how the candidates, who probably don't have the FULL picture are supposed to give answers. The President who has the FULL picture can't get an answer. The press is unfair and if you-guys know so much you give an answer. Oh, you don't have the full picture either.

I don't blame them for not comenting, we people know how we got here overspending, we're not children except the rich who can't downsize. Please, if the press know so much, you come up with the answers. DO you know what the economy will look like on January 20th, so how are they supposed to know to give you an answer now and then change and then it becomes a media bliss of flip flops.
