A Guantánamo Homecoming

It will be harder to tune them out when they are not just nameless men behind barbed wire.

I bet China would gladly get rid of its instigators, trouble makers, felons, and criminals to the US, just as Fidel Castro got rid of his in the 1980s. We are not doing ourselves any favor by let them into this country by burdening the taxpayers of this country to support these unproductive ???refugees??? and potential criminals and terrorists.

The Uighurs are guilty of practicing a faith in a near godless society. I say, welcome to the new world, and accept my apologies for the horrible reception process.

Correct. The Chinese government is a pack of barbarians. Why coolcat999 would side with them is beyond me...I guess it all goes back to the new culture of "guilt until and after proof of innocence", and "guilt by a very thin association."

It reminds me of the McCarthy days, when an accusation was considered proof of guilt.

Gitmo is the biggest disgrace America has covered herself with in the last 100 years.

If Thomas Jefferson could see what we have done with the republic, he'd puke on his shoes.

      Doc,
I am retired USAF, and believed in the oaths I swore. "Bear true faith and allegiance to the same" demands that I serve the constitution, and none else. The highest laws under our Constitution are ratified treaties. This Administration dispatched them ad hoc.
93% of the detainees in our system, of over 100,000 processed, were not captured by United States forces, or allowed a battlefield review prior to detention. They were sold to us for bounty. Somewhere in there, everything went wrong. It traces to John Yoo, Alberto Gonzales, and Richard Cheney. The policy was promulgated to Mr. Rumsfield. The nexus appears to be Mr. Cheney's office, and the constitutional vacuum surrounding that position.
I believe that now, many of the detainees still in custody were to be killed by the process rushed through before the 2006 elections to cover their tracks. It has been a series of military prosecutors and judges that refused to play KGB/Beria that stopped this. I have read that one prosecutor was sent for psychiatric evaluation for refusing to disregard the canon of ethics. (Frankly, I wonder just what the APA, and AMA should do with their members who mixed this hemlock...)
There is a USAFR Brig. Gen. Hartmann with a real thin ribbon rack who has been the administration's man of action for these show trials. I was once told by a wise Chief that the two most dangerous ranks in the Air Force were E-8 and O-6, as both would likely sell their mother for that next promotion. BGen Hartmann should be found on active duty after 20 JAN 09 and questioned. If he is allowed to retire prior to that date, I would suggest the Senate not confirm any officer promotions until and unless his testimony is full, complete and factual. No immunity, no promises. Unlike the telecom issue, I do not see any good faith behavior.
On the civilian side, I hope once we get an Attorney General again, that appropriate investigations are performed and truth discovered. I can not begin to understand what the American Bar Assiciation stands for as long as Mr. Yoo is a professor of law with a license. I can not understand how the University of California would allow him on the property. The use of medical personnel to monitor or modify torture gives the lie to "do no harm."
As an NCO, I can never countenance any law of armed conflict violation.
As a human, I can never forgive organized inhumanity.
When I think of this, I keep remembering the debate where several candidates all called for 'more Guantanamos...' Bloodlust as virtue.
To date, not one at my paygrade or above have been punished, in a pure top-down system.

Excellent summation, Braes. I was a career army NCO, and I would never have dreamt that this sort of crap would come to pass. Oh, I knew that there were some bad apples in the bushel, but this isn't a case of a few yahoos, this is POLICY.

Shame on America for tolerating this, under any veneer of "legality". Amendment VIII demonstrates that non-acceptance of torture was one of the principles of the founders, and doing an end run around that is a disgrace, no matter how you dress it up.

Where is Marine General Smedley Butler, now that we finally need him? He never would have stood for this crap.

Not that it's any of your business, Dahlia. A Canadian citizen has nothing to say on this subject. Glad you think you know what will redefine what it means to be American, but really, you are pretty clueless on the subject.

I'd say Ms. Lithwick is being kind. I see command responsibility for 37 deaths by torture and the Yamashita Standard as having been sufficiently met.

Yep. Last time we ran into people who acted like we do now, we strung them up.

There is absolutely no excuse for torture, no matter what you call it.

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 10/14/2008 3:00:32 PM

Too damn bad. We've acted like scumbags, so don't be too shocked when the rest of the world, Canadians included, call us on it.

  • Posted By: SanMarcosTxMan @ 10/11/2008 8:49:43 PM

I am so very sorry and ashamed of the torture and denial of rights done by our government! How can we claim the high road when we are guilty of torture and war crimes after invading a country on outright lies and act as though international laws do not apply to us? What about the six secret prisons besides Gitmo? I guess the secrets will come out and no one will be held accountable. We need a real change. Except for torture and Gitmo, McCain will just continue the Bush policies and cover-up for his friend George.

So. It is true that God judges in every day. A person is dying of cancer when their body stops acting for health and allows, for whatever reasons, the cancer in, long before someone says to them that they have cancer. Error, whether of the body or of the heart and mind and actions, is reversible, but, as this article points out, the consequences of the wrong actions in times past must be dwelt with in a moral, healthy way. There is a video series going around at some of the colleges, which shows that throughout history, for two thousand years, whenever the people in a Christian nation refused to be bothered to evangelize their less desireable neighbors, in every single case, that region, left in its poverty and misery, would become warlike and invade the Christian country; but in every single case where the Christians of a Christian country sent over an appreciable number of their sons and daughters to give the good news about peace with God through His Word become man, The Lord Jesus Christ, and about the ways a society, and individuals within a society, can function with concern for the good of each person, the country would flower and become vibrant, and a trade partner, and a friend. What we sow is what we reap.
We Americans have a lot to take to God, asking Him to change us inside and out. I doubt that God accepts our "Pweez fowgive me, dad" without what the Bible terms "Acts Of Repentence" which are substantive.
    Substantive means substantive.
    Coronella Keiper, U.S.A.
