I have no issue with the rich, especially the entirely self-made. I respect them. I take issue with the pain of the rich being compared to the pain of the rest of the country during these trying times. I simply cannot take pity someone that thinks a financial loss is having to wear a $10,000 for the second time.

Well...with all this hostility, I know the middle class is having a hard time. But I'll be different. Even the rich are human beings. We are not a socialist country, and there are some who are rich. I'm not rich, I'm pretty middle class (a government retiree on a pension), but I thought the article was interesting and mildly amusing. I'm not enraged by these rich people; I think they are intriguing although a totally different culture, kind of like people from China or Mars. I do support Barack Obama under whose administration these Upper East Sliders would be paying higher taxes than now, which I think should make some Newsweek readers (myself included) more satisfied. And I think Ms. Peterson is a human being trying to do her best, like the rest of us.

Ms. Peterson, I regret to inform you that you are a sad, arrogant piece of garbage. I can't believe that Newsweek would publish this pompous trash. Maybe your spoiled behind should step off of Park Avenue for a moment and take a gander at what's really going on in this country. Maybe you should jaunt down here to middle-class Pittsburgh where honest, hardworking people are losing their jobs, homes, and self-respect on a daily basis (in many cases due to the gross negligence of the people that you observed in order to concoct this study in financial gluttony). You expect that the rest of us should "let a little humanity kick in"? For people who's biggest financial worry is that they might --GASP!-- have to fly commercial? Or that while they occupy multi-million dollar homes in the Hamptons, they're a little cash-poor? I think that I just squeezed out a tear for the poor, poor little rich people on Gin Lane. I hope that you and all of your Upper East Side neighbors choke on your beluga caviar and break an ankle in your Jimmy Choo stilletos.

to tomoba, she is asking us to feel sorry for them. She says they /may/ not deserve it, but we should feel for them anyway.
Quote: "But if you want to let a little humanity kick in, remember many of these families face losing almost everything they've worked for . . . it's their self-esteem, their confidence, their hope."

They can all go to hell for all I care, they don't do me any good. Mostly stuck up snobs, who would never lift a finger to help anyone. (notice I said mostly)

  • Posted By: maytheforcebewithyou @ 10/13/2008 9:30:11 PM

If the dress is $10,000, I just want to know if it is blue. If I pull out and *** all over it, she will shreik and melt like the wicked witch of the west. And all I could say is " sorry, it just slipped out".

You know there is only one good thing I can think of when I consider the entire country going belly-up. And that would be the fact that the worthless, stuckup, idiotic, babied, cold hearted, narrowminded super rich people will have to walk a day in 95% of the rest of the countries shoes. So it almost makes it worthwile.

never again will I read "Newsweek" even if I'm in the dentist's office and the only other magazine is "LPGA Golf". They undoubtedly published this BS to stir us up to buy their rag. I am from the west coast so am not familiar with her name but cannot believe a major publication would publish her crap

  • Posted By: k217 @ 10/13/2008 8:57:17 PM

After reading more about this "C word" I now know Newsweek only publishes her @#$% because it will piss us off and sell more of their toilet paper. Yes I believe her to be what she is but I have no intention of letting her profit from that which she can use to wipe off her mouth...IF she wipes. She is no doubt one of those bugs that keep your septic tanks clean

I have never been more convinced of the validity of the estate tax and Obama's tax plan than I am after reading this article.

Instead of dispair, I recommend these poor-rich take advantadge of this time to find out who they are beyond their clothes, homes and tax bracket. That's where they will find self-esteem, confidence and hope that has nothing to do with the whims of the marketplace.

  • Posted By: Ron Paul For Pope @ 10/13/2008 8:26:44 PM

This is EXACTLY why we have an estate tax -- so that a hereditary class of parasites like Mrs. Peterson can't exist.

The fact that they still do means there's more work to be done...

Presumably this is the same Holly Peterson who wrote "The Manny". From www.oneminutebookreview.com:

"If you believe novelists should remember America???s firefighters even when writing about adulterous sex in a linen closet ???

See page 167, the part that begins with 'Now she was on her knees ???' and ends with 'like a fire hose in her expensive mouth.'"

    and

"A status symbol for some mothers is a male nanny...Peterson wrote a lively story about this for the New York Times that explained why she had hired men to care for her 3-year-old son."

    *******************

In other words, Peterson's one of them. One of those who raped this country of its dignity and future.

It takes quite a bit of chutzpah, Mrs. Peterson, to demand sympathy from people who are worse off than you -- because of you.

She's not sorry that they did it. She's sorry that they can't do it any more.

  • Posted By: k217 @ 10/13/2008 7:50:52 PM

HMMM Holly? You obviously sound like a spoiled little brat to want to post an article on a public server like this. What possessed you to think that 95% of Americans could give a rat's ass about you and your cronies who are crying in their soup because they don't know how to pay their bills. I would give anything to see you and your people huddled over a burning trash can trying to keep warm and tryin to line jump to get the next bowl of soup. I pray for most people in this world but never have I prayed for you or your people and never will

and there is why the USA should have embraced communism

Uhhhh forgive me if I don't puddle up for these folks. These are the same people who look down their noses at even the "upper" middle class and excuse me but most of them didn't even make the money they HAD but inherited from generations ahead of them. I hope the term "old money" haunts them as now they don't know what to do to keep it. I'm sorry I have more compassion for those that lost their retirements due to scandalous business practices. The rich who have lived the high life off of their ancestors' hard work can get in the soup line!!

How dare you write such an article Holly Peterson!
You must be in their league, whereas, you live in the same neighborhood for 30 years.
Write about the people losing their homess due to an inept and corrupted government.
Write about the people losing their jobs, i.e. "GM to shut Mich. plant, cut 1340 jobs.
Write about people losing their life savings or seeing it wither away to nothing.
This, by far, is the worst article ever written at the most trying time in our County's history.
    Shame on you Holly!

Does anyone really care about the "suffering" of the super rich? I know people who are trying to figure out whether to pay the gas bill or feed their kids. Bush, one of the super rich, says when our unemployment benefits run out we should "get a job." What does dummy think we've been trying to do? This needs to be addressed right now, not after the lame duck congress; when our benefits run out it doesn't matter how low interest rates are; no one will be able to buy anything. But I'm so glad there's plenty of money to help Wall Street, banks, etc. to help the rich get richer. Bush and the super rich are the worst thing that's happened to this country since the Great Depression. I hope there's a special place in hell for these arrogant, self obsessed bastards.

  • Posted By: firemedic258 @ 10/13/2008 6:36:30 PM

I hope these superrich can hear the tiny little violins that I am playing just for them. Having to wear a $10,000 dress for the second time! Indeed! Americans are losing their homes, their jobs, their paltry savings, their health insurance, but NOW it is obvious that SOMETHING MUST be done about this crisis. We cannot have our socialites be seen in the same clothes twice. I probably won't sleep tonight knowing the suffering of this woman. She is in my prayers.

    THE GREAT BUSH DEPRESSION
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
He perfectly predicted the current meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen next
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything seen in generations
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand how its been broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use quantum mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He was the last to know somthing was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a budget surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that
Stand up and hold them accountable
Bush isn't on the ballot this year but his policies are
    Elect Obama Biden 2008
