    THE GREAT BUSH DEPRESSION
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
He perfectly predicted the current meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen next
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything seen in generations
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand how its been broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use quantum mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He was the last to know somthing was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a budget surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that
Stand up and hold them accountable
Bush isn't on the ballot this year but his policies are
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

"It's not just the goods they're in danger of losing, it's their self-esteem, their confidence, their hope. And that's a place it seems where everyone, from Main Street to Fifth Avenue, is stuck for now. And maybe for a long way down the road" WELLLLLLLLLLLL, welcome to the club, but the big difference here is that main streets feels it first, longer and has nothing to fall back on, nor do they look down their noses at anyone else in their same boat or otherwise, we lend a hand or a pat on the back or share the leg up, Main street has a class of people that by their hearts alone display what real class should entail.
I do not believe the rich need be scorned by any means but the table turning is better than what the aristocrats in Russia faced during the Revolution, and talk on the streets was beginning to sound a little nostalgic for those bad old days. In the end guys, guess what..............Heart is all we have left so lets show a little and turn society around and all have a good look at ourselves!

I'm sorry - I just don't have any compassion for these folks.

These "Captains" of industry have lived too far out of whack from reality for too long. I'm sure Exeter, Hotchkiss, Deerfield etc ingrained in them the sense that this was their due but the reality is this: Your lineage made you no smarter and a hell of a lot greedier than most. Did you really believe that you had some inherent right to make so much more for doing jobs that honestly aren't that special or difficult.

Perhaps you are inclined to tell me that you really are something special and brilliant in a way I could not understand. I would challange that I would not have bent over for Credit Default Swaps and Mortgage Backed Securities when they were clearly flawed and the models more so.

Reap what you sew - the only shame is that more of you will not fall further. It is disheartening that Newsweek could compare you to main street where honest men and women are paying a great price for your avorice.

The way I would see it is in 2007, the amount of money made by Pro football teams was over 2 trillion dollars. That would have effected a lot of peoples lives and is certainly more than the 700 billion in tax payers moeny spent bailing out the companies that robbed the people to get us into this mess to start with. How about helping all those people who are loosing homes due to predatory lending practices that are still not being regulated?

All those tickets of the fans who go to watch sporting events made the difference in being a star or being a gas station attendent. The people that can make a difference sit on top of the world and laugh at the people that made them rich and famous. Sell the jet and use the money to help out your loyal fans.

this is mart thinking - the public made them rich- why not give back directly to those who need it.

hate to see anyone sufffer through today's economic times. I would like to stress that to all those who have made millions from the public who believed in all of those famous actors, sports fans of all types and pillars of the community that has had the support of the public eye that helped them gain fame and fortune. Yes, all of the fans and those who supported you to help you get to where you are today would be all the more reason you should put more back into the public's pockets today. not by giving to charities for write off's, but to find other areas that are causing problems with our American downfall today. Now is the time when those who have the money to help repair this country could do something to build an even bigger image that will gain 10 times the amount of support from your fans. Here are some good ideas that would help your communities.
    1) Put money into schools.
    2) Help by stating projects that will provide homes and jobs for communities.
    3) Instead of giving money to non-profit organizations that spend more than 1/2 of the moeny on personel, give money to family's directly to help pay medical expanses.
    4) Help retired adults to help provide social security to those in need. Do not give this moeny to government agiencies. It is a waste of money as it only winds up reaching approximately 20% of the people it is inteded for.

Bottom line is the public provides your wealth and respect. It does not hurt to do your part to help keep america strong.

This is actually something I've already thought about. Us regular people are used to struggle, all this means is more tough times (we're used to it). However the rich people must be in SHOCK to see their money dwindling. Not sure if I feel sorry for them but I do know that mentally, it's got to be really hard on them. It's all relative, isn't it?

  • Posted By: merryannk @ 10/13/2008 4:24:07 PM

I am not about to have empathy for people who cannot fly a private jet anymore or have to wear a 10,000 dress for a second time when I, along with family and friends am oftentimes having to choose between gas and food. This article must be tongue and cheek because she cannot really think anyone who lives in the real world would be anything other than disgusted

  • Posted By: ldr041 @ 10/13/2008 4:07:00 PM

"So should we feel sorry for these people, so many of whom have profited in spectacular ways from a largely unregulated industry? Probably not."

Duh! With a little research effort maybe Holly could tell us if bailout tax dollars are filling in for executive bonuses that were paying for weekend ski trips and designer gowns last year.

  • Posted By: tomoba @ 10/13/2008 3:26:00 PM

There is alot of pent up rage in these comments toward the article, and my own rage is no less severe on how the rich gorge as the rest of us suffer. But unless I somehow misread Holly's article, I believe she was simply reporting the impact of this economy on the rich. I do not perceive that Holly is in any manner trying to elicit sympathy for the "suffering" rich. Throttle back a bit ,folks.

    • Posted By: Jack313 @ 10/13/2008 4:01:10 PM

Throttle back? Nope. Sorry. Really bad timing to write a story about how the rich are suffering. She did in fact ask us to have a little empathy. This article is the height or misjudgment, insensitivity, and poor taste.

    • Posted By: sick_of_whinyrich_people @ 10/13/2008 3:35:30 PM

Actually, you did misread. She did ask us to feel sorry for these people. Quote "But if you want to let a little humanity kick in, remember many of these families face losing almost everything they've worked for over decades, or even generations. It's not just the goods they're in danger of losing, it's their self-esteem, their confidence, their hope." So we're probably not supposed to feel sorry for them, she says, but she would like us to anyway.

Also if your self-esteem is in your house, your money, and your belongings, you have much larger issues with your hope, self-esteem, and confidence than just losing money....

  • Posted By: Nihilist 007 @ 10/13/2008 3:51:27 PM

Its not that I lack compassion, as I definitely have empathy having been one who truly did lose everything and had to start all over again. Many of the people that you want me to feel this compassion for would not take my phone calls, would not see me, ignored me, and at a time when I didn't want pity but simply a chance to rebuild my life. So be it they need to get on with theirs.

  • Posted By: Ontheissues @ 10/13/2008 3:50:20 PM

I don't fault the writer of the article for noting it, but really, how much suffering is really going on. So now thaty can't buy a 10,000 dress for the next charity event....sorry...I had to regain my composure after tearing up. I understand there are different levels of suffering, but to state that they may have to fly commercial now instead of a charter, there is NO suffering there. I am sure that many of these people do work hard, but no harder than those of us "middle class" and I am sure MANY of them work much much less. Society has rewarded greed for so long that now we feel sorry for them if they aren't rich anymore. While people are losing literally EVERYTHING they have to downsize to three houses...........SO SAD for them!!!

Holly Peterson's father runs Blackstone, one of the most evil companies out there. I feel no sympathy for her and her kind. I hope they all starve to death.

  • Posted By: newfoundland @ 10/13/2008 3:47:53 PM

Comment: I do not feel sorry for them or angry. I feel nothing for them. What have they contributed to the world ? Shallow, and often dissociated they live for the next yacht or evening gown rather than for any mission or purpose )other than accumulating stuff). Studies show that when a person is taking their last breath they do not think about money or things....but rather they wonder if they spent enough time with family and if they left the world a better place. Gowns mean "0".

how dare you even put energy into such tripe. F*** those people. thanks to them im now working 2 jobs and trying to start my own business ot make ends meet. they can rot. these are the same people that fire and layoff the same people that helped them make millions. and they have little to no sympathy as long as they can continue living in they're posh pads driving ridiculous cars. until they feel the crunch they wont care, so why should we?? until they know what its like to scrap and FIGHT for what they have why should i have the least bit of sympathy? and if your in the midst of these areas living in a posh pad as well, why in the hell should i feel any bit of sympathy for you ms HOLLY PERTESON...your lively hood isnt in danger, i take it your husband does some financial workings around wall street or hes in a good position and you dont have to worry about income. your one of them that takes a ridiculous vacation on your employees behalf, your one of them that walked with a nice bonus and went to buy some overly ellaborate gift, or whatever you do with your income....it sure isnt spent helping anyone but your kind from what it sounds like...how dare you for writing it, how dare you for publishing this, and HOW DARE NEWSWEEK FOR APPROVING SUCH CRAP...

you know what i do when i pass designer retail store and expensive cars...I SPIT ON THEM...whether the owner sees me or not, whether the employees see me or not. a big fat phlem bursting spit wad right on the windshield of abercrombie and fitch, on a mercedez, on gucci bags, chanel glasses, BMW's, restaurants, you name it. i have ZERO respect for people with a love for money. money is the root of ALL evil, and look where money has put the people that love it?

so again i say, F*** those jerk-offs with multi million dollar bonuses. i would slap them silly if i saw them in person, you included. this makes me sick...

To all concerned: voting is free. Be very thoughtful about who you vote for. Keep in mind a certain candidate who said paying your rightful share of taxes is patriotic, and the on who disagreed. I don't hate the rich. Some of them probably actually worked very hard to become so and were very smart with money. Fine. But they should hold up ther end of keeping this society going in line with the amount they benefit by it.

When my husband and I could probably retire comfortably on the proceeds of the sale of just one of these women's wardrobes, I feel very little sympathy for these people. I haven' t bought any new clothing in several years, except socks and underwear. I have a thing about that. We're still doing OK: keeping up withour mortgage ( though sometimes my husband has to borrow against our home equity line to make payroll and thus get paid himself in his small business if his customers are late with their payments) and eating pretty well-Costco is a God send for good nutritious food at reasonable prices (No, I nor anyone I know works for them) if you shop carefully. After years of battling our health insurance broker, I got mad and spent I don't know how many hours of research to halve our premiums when he insisted it couldn't be done (loooonnng story). Needless to say he lost our business for good. At the last minute when I told him I was doing my own research and talkin to other brokers, he suddenly (literally within 24 hours) came up with the same plans I had found for myself. Our daughter went to Annapolis, and not because her father was an admiral, and got back safely from two deployments as a Marine helicopter pilot in Iraq. But vacations are out, even long weekends close to home. My husband has started an on-line business we hope will develop into a moneymaker for our retirement. I am disabled, thus on Social Security and Medicare (God bless FDR and LBJ for those!). Eating out is limited to very rare outings to happy hours that serve good, inexpensive tapas, but we don't drink at all. So far, so good, but it's tight and getting tighter. The value of our house has dropped dramatically, and people can afford my husband's original small business services less and less. Our luxuries are scented candles, some cats and birds, and a peach tree that was incredibly productive this year, and the occasional day trip up in the mountains for some trout fishing and a picnic. So we are doing well by many people's standards, but not by the standards we lived by five years ago. But we are 61 YOA and fearful. The slightest crisis could really be a disaster. I wish I had a $10,000 dress I could sell in case of emergency.
