I had gnashing of teeth because of this Obama potential win, but I finally calmed down. I think it will be okay. After all, if he does do what he promises, I can take it easy and not worry about working so hard for my future. Why hassle with it all if the govt will give me insurance and not charge me any taxes? If he doesn't do what he says, which is much more likely, then the country will once again go to crap and we'll have Republican rule again for a good 16 years, as someone else mentioned. If McCain wins, we are likely to have riots in the streets for months and that would be unpleasant. If Obama wins, I don't think you'll see anyone out rioting.. so I'm good with an Obama win. I can relax now.

If Obama wins there will be no riots. If McCain wins watch out. Let the idiots riot. That's what they do best.

I consider those of you who can not see Obama for who and what he is, to be too ignorant to have the right to vote. Just thinking of Obama as president and driving this country into socialism makes me physically sick !!!!!!! Too bad we will get what we deserve if we vote for him------I wish those of you who want Obama could have him...........without the rest of us not having to suffer. You democrates just want the government to always take care of you and actually tax to death the middle class people who are successful in this country and do not look for handouts. If you are poor and unsuccessful---------taxing and taking from those who are successful is not the answer to your problems.

    • Posted By: freight - dog @ 10/13/2008 12:14:06 AM

The democrats are moving the country towards socialism? The republicans have been in charge the majority of the past several years and they have brought "socialism" to the wealthy.

The financial crisis is because of ACORN? Not the greedy, dishonest financial wizzards? Was ENRON because of ACORN too?

      • Posted By: sheebe @ 10/13/2008 12:40:26 AM

I am a Democrat. Been one since I was of age to vote. Joined because of JFK. Didn't realize what Democrats were really about. Seven months ago I changed that. Anyone who believes in letting a new born baby die because of a botched abortion is sick. I am not religious but that is wrong. Plus taxing the rich more will take us middle class and put us on the street with the poor. The rich will go else where, send their companies to other Countries. With Obamas tax plans, we will have a hard time selling our homes. He wants to raise capital gains and death taxes too. So if anyone is given a farm a home from a loved one. More than likely you won't be able to afford to keep it. And he is for us middle class? The poor?

If Obama wins, maybe you should move to another country - perhaps a dictatorship like Burma, where there is no democracy and NO ONE gets anything - even handouts from the government.

Comment: Jill Stanek was a nurse who worked in a Chicago-area hospital where abortions were performed. Sometimes, babies would survive the abortions,
in which case the hospital policy was to just let them die. In her testimony before the Illinois Senate, she told about picking up a baby who had been placed in a soiled linen closet and holding the child for 45 minutes until it died
In part, because of her testimony, a bill was introduced in the
Illinois legislature to protect and give medical attention to these infants.

From: Life Lies: Barack Obama & Born-Alive
    By David Freddoso, National Review

In 2001, Senator Barack Obama was the only member of the Illinois senate to speak against a bill that would have recognized premature abortion survivors as persons. The bill was in response to a Chicago-area hospital that was leaving such babies to die. Obama voted present on the bill after denouncing it. (In Illinois present is the same as no) It passed the state Senate but died in a state house committee.

In 2003, a similar bill came before Obamas health committee. He voted against it. But this time, the legislation was slightly different. This latter version was identical to the federal Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, which by then had already passed the U.S. Senate unanimously (with a hearty endorsement even from abortion advocate Sen. Barbara Boxer) and had been signed into law by President Bush.

Sen. Obama is currently misleading people about what he voted against, specifically claiming that the bill he voted against in his committee lacked neutrality language on Roe v. Wade. The bill did contain this language. He even participated in the unanimous vote to put it in. But he voted
    against the final bill anyway.

The Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act was modeled after the federal version, with the identical definition of born alive. The World Health Organization created this definition in 1950. The United Nations adopted it in 1955.

Obama actively opposed the legislation in the Illinois State Senate. In 2001, he voted no in committee, spoke against it on the Senate floor, and voted present on the floor. The next year, he voted no in committee, spoke against it on the Senate floor, and voted no on the floor. Obama was the sole senator to ever speak against it on the Illinois Senate floor.

The U.S. Senate passed the federal bill unanimously(1998), with Senators Barbara Boxer and Ted Kennedy speaking in support of it.

The pro-abortion group NARAL expressed neutrality on the that bill. On August 5, 2002, President George W. Bush signed it into law.

For four years Obama has said he would have supported the federal version, but that simply isn't true. In 2003, as chairman of the Illinois Senate's Health and Human Services Committee, Obama voted yes on an amendment that made the Illinois version identical to the federal one. However, he then voted no on the amended bill.

The republicans are trying to change the topic from economics (how are people going to save their homes, life savings, etc.) to attacks on Obama and now abortion. I guess those of you who are taking the bait are better off now than 8years, 4years, or 4 weeks ago.

In my opinion The media is for Obama.......With so many things against Obama how can he be trusted? Mc Cain is the better man yet the media pushes Obama......We are in this debt because of the democrats and they push for more......wake up people vote Mc Cain at least he is not muslim

    • Posted By: sheebe @ 10/13/2008 12:02:57 AM

I have many friends who are Muslims. They are hard working people. Obama is not a Muslim. I am not for him though. I remember 9/11. My friends store was trashed by people on that day. My other friend was almost beaten. This is not right. They have lived in our Country for years, since they were small. They don't wear traditional clothes. They will give you the shirt off their backs. They have many times for me. That was a pretty shallow statement. My friends are voting for McCain too.

    • Posted By: leavingslowly @ 10/12/2008 9:32:06 PM

      A) Obama is not muslim. This is a swift boat smear that some poor fool Republicans have latched on to. Obama is non-denominational Christian. And B) Republicans controlled both houses of Congress from 1994-2007, and our President has been Republican since 2000. So between 2000-2007 our country was run by Republicans. Between 2000-2007, we more than doubled the national debt from $5 trillion to almost $11 trillion today. The Republicans in charge did that, not the democrats. You can choose to vote however you please, but I beg of you, get your facts straight first.

This election will be like the stock market is now. A nation full of Texan_007's who believe every Republican ad on TV and don't actually look into the actual decisions to back up their statements. I bet you also think white people are the only people worth your attention. Well, guess what, this is a big world my friend. You don't need to start wars and insult everyone. Take a minute and make some rational decisions. Learn something. Turn the tv off, leave your local community, and see if you even know what America looks like. Here's a hint, every town isn't just like yours.

    • Posted By: Legitt @ 10/12/2008 8:21:01 PM

You're right. I wish people would think deeper. Obama has the liberal media in his pocket. Hes buying this election. I even heard today that there are people that are screwing with the market and financial crisis to make it look bad. Then IF Obama wins, everything will go better and everyone will think it was OBama who fixed it. Im telling you its all propaganda.

Go to a search engine and type in Fitna, and watch the video, should remove any doubt about who to vote for.

Obama First Met Ayers At A 1995 Meeting Of Local Liberal Activists That Took Place In Ayers' Home.

The Meeting Launched Obama's Illinois State Senate Candidacy And Allowed Ayers To Introduce Him "To The Hyde Park Community As The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread."

From 1999 To 2002, Obama Served With Ayers On The Board Of Directors For The Woods Fund Of Chicago.

"[Obama And Ayers] Have Also Appeared Jointly On Two Academic Panels, One In 1997 And Another In 2001."

In 1997, Obama Reviewed Ayers' Book, A Kind And Just Parent: The Children Of Juvenile Court, In The Chicago Tribune, Calling It "A Searing And Timely Account Of The Juvenile Court System."

"From 1995 To 1999, [Barack Obama] Led An Education Foundation Called The Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC), And Remained On The Board Until 2001. ??? The CAC Was The Brainchild Of Bill Ayers???"

"Ayers And Obama Were Also Part Of A Group Of Four Instructed To Draft The Bylaws That Would Govern CAC. Surely That Endeavor Would Have Involved Significant Interaction Between Them. Then There's The Question Of Unrecorded Meetings Of Both The Board And The Collaborative."

"As CAC Board Chair, Obama Was Essentially Authorizing The Funding Of Ayers's Own Educational Projects, And The Projects Of Ayers's Radical Allies."

"Ayers And Obama Guided CAC Money To Community Organizers, Like ACORN (The Association Of Community Organizations For Reform Now) And The Developing Communities Project (Part Of The Gamaliel Foundation Network), Groups Self-Consciously Working In The Radical Tradition Of Saul Alinsky."

"The Chicago Annenberg Challenge Stands As Barack Obama's Most Important Executive Experience To Date. By Its Own Account, CAC Was A Largely A Failure."

"The Failure Of CAC Thus Raises Entirely Legitimate Questions, Both About Obama's Competence, His Alliances With Radical Community Organizers, And About Ayers's Continuing Influence Over CAC And Its Board, Headed By Obama."

"The Obama Campaign Has Struggled To Downplay That Association. ??? Yet Documents In The CAC Archives Make Clear That Mr. Ayers And Mr. Obama Were Partners In The CAC."

Ayers Is "Flatly Unrepentant About The Bombings." (Ben Smith, "Obama Once Visited '60s Radicals," The Politico, 2/22/08)

In 2001, Ayers Did Not Express Regret For His Past Conduct And Even Claimed The Weather Underground "Didn't Do Enough" Bombings. (Russell Berman, "Obama's Ties To Left Come Under Scrutiny," The New York Sun, 2/19/08)

If Obama does win, we won't be any better off than Burma and there won't be any difference between them and us. The result will remain the same and all of our rights, money, businesses, schools, hospitals, and everything else won't be ours anymore. They'll all belong to the government and we won't have anything we can do or say about it. In short, our entire society, nation, and way of life will be destroyed! Our children will inherit nothing of any substantial value except monumental debt and they will be unwillingly forced to live in what will become a country that won't even be able to rank above that of a third world nation.

My gosh...what a negative way of viewing life. The government is not all to blame for the mess we are in. We are the people who put them there to govern us. We also acted in an irresponsible way and today, we are simply only experiencing the results of our stupidity and ignorance.

Have you seen how Americans live? Everything is borrowed: from plastic; to mortgages; to food; to entertainment; to cars; to vacations; to clothes; to drinking; to smoking; even to drugs. It's outrageous!!! Most people live like there is no tomorrow. They live so large, I keep wondering: just where is the money coming from??? How can they afford this big home on this small salary??? Look at the cars and look at how they spend!!! Just like a kid in a candy store - no control.

Look at the waste we create in our environment!!!

Americans live beyond their means. It's time to get a grip and live beneath our means. Buy what we can afford, nothing else. If we do not have the cash, we can't afford it. Period. Children are just as bad as the parents, nothing satisfies them unless it is the best of the best. And who put them in this position of not us parents? What are they going to do when they grow into adults?

America is known to be the best place to live in the world by most standards. But this "me, me, me" attitude has got to stop. Gratitude is in great demand. Our ego is being mis-used and abused in a big way. It's time to open our eyes: to be responsible and act smart. We have so much, this "must have" attitude must be restrained. We can be happier - it's our choice if we want it. Do you actually believe we are happy in the present mess that we've created for ourselves?

Government leaders come and go. We choose them for specific reasons and it's time to change for the better and nothing is stopping us but ourselves. We possess, within each of us, the ability to live far beyond this mess. It is inherent in each and everyone of us, if we only but want it. This is what democracy is all about; we are the envy of the world around us.

Tough times never last, tough people do. It's high time to remake our minds to feed it right; it's the only way we'll survive and it is time to reclaim our life by being and acting responsible.

Even though I don't like Obama. Don't want our Country to become a Socialist Country. This name calling to the opposite side doesn't do any of us any good. Obama to me has not said much at all. Why? because he has no intentions of keeping his promises. This way when he is elected. He can do what he really wants to do. Then he can say he meant this and that. Who can argue then? Any way, What we all need to do is raise hell about Pelosi, Franks, Reid, Dobbs, and any other party that didn't do a thing but steal from us. We need to raise hell to get them out of there. And we can do that. Instead of beating a dead horse. Lets start demanding that they pay for what happened. The CEO'S should be in jail. Any one that was paid millions should have assets froze, forced to pay back that money. Can't you see that while we are bickering about who is going to win President. They are laughing at all of US. Do you like the fact that they think we are stupid? And that we will take any punch those thieves throw on us? Do you realize how many illegals were able to buy homes that they couldn't afford. A few million homes that they were able to purchase are now in foreclosure. All the money that the pork filled the pockets of the ones we voted to look over us and do us right? At least we can do something. If we don't start raising hell then it will be to late. This whole election thing was a set up. Our so called wonderful Senate, Reps. and House have their bank accounts stuffed. With money done on dirty deeds. At least if Obama wins we have a chance to clean up some of the crooks that think they can get by with what they have done. Or will they get by with what they did?

Here's the thing: Kerry and Gore were not particularly likeable candidates. Gore especially had an aggressive streak that was easy to target. Whether it's true or not, Obama has managed to paint himself as completely calm, non-aggressive, and optimistic. He has adopted an inherently "positive" persona that neither prior candidate had, and negative attacks end up bouncing off him like he's rubber and McCain's glue. If Schmidt was really that smart, he wouldn't have let McCain adopt a mean-old-fart persona; instead, he would've painted him as wise father-time. It's too late now, though. McCain's negativity, combined with the economic crisis, has won the election for Obama.

Ur comments to me is the best non-partisan take on this whole election. It does not even identify ur polical affiliation or whom u'd vote for. I'm gonna vote for Obama/Biden ticket, but would respect what ever is ur final decision. I wish most commentaries will be more articulate and less hateful. Yes, our country should be happy that we have individuals like you.

      • Posted By: leavingslowly @ 10/12/2008 5:00:14 PM

Thank you. I am going to vote for Obama/Biden. I don't particularly like either candidate (I did like McCain early on in the election), however, I like the way Obama has run his campaign and I do not like the way McCain has run his. In the end, I think how candidates run their campaigns is a pretty good indication of how they will run their presidencies. Look at Bush -- his campaign was built on lies, manipulations and instilling fear in Americans citizens to get them to bend to his ideologies. And you know what? So what his presidency.

        • Posted By: BufordTJustice @ 10/12/2008 11:03:25 PM

So, going by your concept, if for some reason obama gets elected, we will keep hearing him say things that people would like to hear, but none of it will ever happen because everyone is apparently stupid enough to think he can actually do everything he says? Obama is full of what people want to hear, but its all hot air, he can't back any of it up or make it happen. HE SHOWS NO LOVE OR RESPECT FOR THIS COUNTRY, AND HE MAY CLAIM HE IS CHRISTIAN NOW, BUT ONCE A MUSLIM, ALWAYS A MUSLIM. WAKE UP AMERICA, DONT BE SO STUPID!!.

I agree with you. How one runs his campaign is the best predictor of his management abilities. My very positive opinion on Hillary changed significantly based on the incompetent way she run her campaign. Same goes for McCain. Either Obama is good or he is smart enough to let Axelrod run his campaign. Either way his campaign is run very focused and competently. Let's hope he will govern the same way.

          • Posted By: StephenHNIC @ 10/12/2008 6:23:38 PM

Simon, I'm sad to say I have to agree with your assessment about Hillary. I voted for her in my state's primary (CA) but then, a few weeks later, I was sad to see that when she started to realize she was not going to catch up to him, she resorted to trying to pull him down. I lost respect for her. I still respect her, and still look forward to watching her accomplish great things, but it was a sobering sight.

I echo the comments to the effect that we can tell how a candidate will govern by looking at how they campaign. And may I say that it is refreshing to see people giving credit on this blog to the good ideas posted by others. All too often we merely insult other people and distort their positions to make ourselves feel smart or funny. It is nice to see the opposite.

Laurie, how can you possibly have such strong concern with the relatively mild ads and statements from the McCain camp, yet support Obama, whose attacks ahev been vicious, mean, dishonest, and racist. It is Obama???s supporters who have claimed that, if he is not elected, there will be riots in the streets. That is nothing more than a cheap attempt to scare voters into voting for Obama. It is Obama who accuses anyone who even uses his middle name of being a racist. It is Obama who claims that any attack upon his character (which deserves to be attacked) is racism. Oh, it couldn???t just be because he pals around with terrorists, lies constantly, has a long record of associations with communists, criminals, and other shady characters, has worked with ACORN to try to pull off the most extensive case of vote fraud in our nation???s history, and constantky manipulates!

Steve Schmidt has single-handedly caused me to lose all respect for Senator McCain. McCain stated in early June that he would be running a decent campaign that stuck to the issues. Four months later when he's down in the polls, McCain has turned his back on his promise and is running some of the nastiest attack ads on the air. It really bothered me that his campaign stops last week started to sound like KKK rallies. It's one thing for people to not like Obama, but unacceptable when members of the crowd start screaming for Obama to be bombed, decapitated, and others. It bothered me even more that it took five days and condemnation from several Republican supporters before McCain finally spoke up to the people at his rallies - and got booed for it by the crowd!! I want a president that can lead and inspire the American people. I'm scared if racist, violent rants is what McCain inspires. Unfortunately, I think McCain will win the election. Based upon Gallup, McCain has already gained the 1% Obama lost. The numbers will keep turning in McCain's favor.

I like the comment for those of us that don't care for Obama,,,,we can leave the country. I can't wait until he gets elected, we'll all think we're in a different country and we aren't going to like it. Right now the Republican Party is down about as low as it could get. Bush has been terrible and McCain doesn't have what it takes to win. Wait and see what 4 years of Obama does for the Republican Party. Obama will set the Republican Party up for a run of at leat 16 years of un-interuppted rule. C'mon Obama !!!!
