Bill Clinton points to liberal Congressional Democrats' protection of Fannie and Freddie from scrutiny as a primary cause of the current economic meltdown.

To prove Bill Clinton's point, this is a link to a C-SPAN video clip of the Congressional hearings at roughtly the time McCains attempt at S.190. to fix fannie and freddie.

"Video Unearthed Democrats in their own words Covering up the Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Scam that caused our Economic Crisis"

The link below describes how some of those Democrats in Congress tried to use the original version of the bailout bill to divert money eventually recovered to groups like ACORN. See: Wall Street Journal

When we talk about foreclosures, the 3 biggest hit states are: California, Nevada, and Florida. When we hear from either candidate, we hear that every American is losing their home and we must bail them out.
In high population states such as California, 272 out of 273 houses are NOT facing foreclosure - this is 99.5% of all California households. We now have policies addressing 0.05% of the population -many of them investor.s

Have a hunch my in laws fall into that category. They are racist enough, and stupid enough, to believe that it is all a conspiracy by democrats to ruin the country.

In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future.
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything in the last 80 years.
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He didnt realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that .
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

The 10% are yet again the same one who voted for the Iraq war and who are making money out of the war. The longer the war continue, the more money they make out of American tax-payers money. These are the Republicans. Any surprise why McCain vowed to continue the war despite majority of American populace being tired of the war and wanted the war ended. Imagine how much USA spend on the war monthly at the expense of its other domestic problems - including the Economy? Yet the Republicans through McCain wanted the war to continue. In their dream, Yes ONLY in their dream

I guess if our country is bombed then you won't have to worry about your money. Peace through strength. Get your priorities straight.

  • Posted By: Smithdoye @ 10/12/2008 9:13:36 PM

The 10% are DEFINATELY the republicans of which Sen McCain is one of them.

    • Posted By: baren @ 10/12/2008 9:48:12 PM

The 10% are just people and the government has nothing to do with them.. They are people who live within their means and don't look for the govenment to take care of them. They are hard working, faith loving, family people who make good decisions for their lives.

  • Posted By: baren @ 10/12/2008 9:35:49 PM

The people that are in the 10% are the people who are smart and have lived within their means. They own their homes, they have no loans, they save money, they are employable and hold jobs and enjoy their life. They live by faith and have loving families and friends with the bond of community. They are independent and do not look for the government to take care of their needs. They take care of themselves and Pres. Bush has nothing to do with it. An inmportant aspect is these people mostly do not use credit except for convenience and they pay for what they buy meaning they do not purchase more than they can pay for. So when the sky starts falling as it always does during life, they are not in dire straights. It is not hard but you see maybe 90% of the people must like to live on the edge so they can't stand when the sky starts falling. Poor planning.

I disagree - I'm not having any major financial difficulties but I worry that the US is becoming really stupid and under-educated compared to the rest of the world, particularly our developed-nation peers. I worry that we'll be less competitive, less progressive, less prosperous - because we're resting on our laurels and telling ourselves how GREAT we are, that America is just perfect the way it is, that it doesn't need any change.

You can be well off personally and still worry that your country is headed in the wrong direction. It can certainly make a change for the better though - and we will. Very soon now.

  • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 10/12/2008 9:35:15 PM

Down with anti-intellectualism. Down with the GOP, Down with John McCain. Down with Sarah Palin.

Up with Progress, Change, Intelligence, Creativity, Academic and Intellectual Achievement, Excellence...

Try to avoid settling for mediocrity and our future will be brighter just for trying to be excellent, innovative, ambitious and forward-thinking.

It's quite simple. Vote for change this year - not for the status quo. A vote for McCain-Palin is a vote for the Mediocre Ticket.

  • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 10/12/2008 9:25:22 PM

What's wrong with this picture: Bush elected twice, giving tax cuts across the board and starting two wars. Spending like there's no tomorrow to "stimulate" an economy that was just fine when he "took over" the fiscal oversight of this nation.

I cannot believe the GOP supporters are now trying to blame the Democrats, but let them rant and rave all they want with their petty examples, their minutest focus on the narrowest of facts... they're going to be history because there is no more thought leadership in the Repbulican party - it's all dried up.

I think Americans will be much better off with a regime change; is there anyone in his right mind still planning to vote for a Republican candidate? Yes, of course, there are vapid populists everywhere in this country, particularly in Texas where i'm living. But there are an equal or greater number of intelligent, thinking and constructively critical people who see things could be vastly improved; that is not to say things are terrible - oh, no, we've got it quite good overall - but things could be improved for a great number of people who are struggling. The more we help each other, the better it will be.

The ignorant, the bigoted, the fearful, the narrow-minded will always be with us; I like to think that this is the 10% that transcend all walks of life and who are thankfully in the minority. It's the critical, thinking people who give this country hope and a future toward Progress and Advance - this striving for improvments is creative and intellectual, and is the engine that keeps America a vital, interesting pleace to live and work.

Its been said that 5% of Americans control the 95 %(?) . Lets see, 5% plus family and bultlers, chauffers etc should bring it all to a neat 10% .

LOL. Best article I have read all day and yes, Chris Matthews is losing it, wait, he so totally lost it. I will keep my eye out for it, cause he really needs it.

  • Posted By: aussiefan448 @ 10/12/2008 9:20:49 PM

We as people need to stop being like puppets on a string folks. It's all about control. Of course the government is in a panic. It is hemorraging and can't control the bleeding. The hungry mob is losing patience, and tettering on the edge of revolt. Wouldn't YOu be fear mongering and trying to cause a panic to then rush in and save the day with your billions of freshly minted cashflow that only exists in our imaginations? It doesn't have to be this way people. Abandon that government stranglehold on your psyche, and then you too will be in the 10% range. No, I'm not rich or famous, but I have very much to be thankful for and it has nothing to do with anything monetary.

  • Posted By: jonzogonzo @ 10/12/2008 9:20:41 PM

Its been said somewhere(?) that 5% of Americans control the other 95% . Add to that family members, butlers, chauffers and you get 10% . I tihnk !

A large number of secure jobs with the federal, state, county, or city governments allow many Americans to be worry free. A large number of quasi government jobs in utilities, school districts, special metro or rural districts, charities, medicine, politics, defense, agriculture, telecom, or consulting keep alot of Americans worry free. A few Americans are rich enough to never work and never worry. In short, the number of Americans who are financially set and satisfied at any given time far exceeds the 10% found in the polls. Big government protects alot of citizens with jobs or retirement benefits. Big government protects all Americans against a great depression. Big government is the USA. We hate it but we do not survive as a nation without it.

  • Posted By: Jbright9 @ 10/12/2008 8:57:08 PM

I think the people who are satisfied are the ones that voted for George W and can't admit they made a mistake. They also are probably in the top 10% financially who do not and have never worried about being able to provide the basics for their family. Probably five percent are in denial and the other 5% may be challenged. Anyway you look at it, they are wrong.

The wrong direction is we are loosing money, jobs, and house, the roof over our heads.
We need cash man, right now in the hands of states to hire to do stuff to keep people working, tha;s the only thing it will save this nation...work work work
