I wonder what this 'right-direction wrong-direction' really question means. Liberals may think we are on the wrong direction because they don't like Bush. Conservatives believe the countrry is too liberal. So the premise of thiis article is flawed if the author thinks that everyone agrees on the answer to this 'questions.'A fact is people feel their onw situation is OK, but they are worried about the neighbors. This question seems to be a poll driven question that really is meaningless.

I'm not sure what this right-direction worng-direction question even means, and even more, I don't know what the answers mean. A fact is when people are asked about their own situation the vast majority say they are OK. When asked how their neighbors are doing a large number of people are concerned. This disconnect makes me wonder how valid this type of poll really is.

Believe it or not, there is a significant number of optimists who see the financial crisis that government has brought upon us and the economic panic that followed as another round of the type of problems which have ocurred before and will again. They have faith that the citizens of this country will endure the hardships and emerge stronger from having done so. Some see this as a "tempering" process preparing us for the next existence. Others may actually think that government has done something constructive with the bail out and some may be looking forward to the next administration. These optimists exist in both parties and most if not all faiths. You need not feel sorry for these people and should not demean them. They just see things of this world in a more positive perspective than the 90%.

Well, even though I wasn't polled for this, had I been, I would have sided with the 10%. I am not Republican, and did not vote for Bush either time. What I am is someone who lives within her means and practices sound personal financial planning. And, like justchuck, I am not especially brilliant. I am not trying to sound self-righteous, but I have lived my financial life so that I can weather the inevitable occasional financial storm.

These are the people who understands that gas prices go up and go down, stock market goes down and goes up like night and day. These are the people who work hard and never lie in their mortgage application. These are the people who say no when their banks say their houses are worth twice as much. These are the people who trust their money to Warren Buffet' Berkshire Hathaway and don't worry about it.

Many people have job security, cops, teachers, nurses, doctors, almost anyone in the medical profession, correction offcers, plumbers, etc etc. Also, not everyone is a fool to the market. There are simple steps that limit your downside in a falling market. If I can retire at 48 with a nice pension, and find a system that protects my money when the market falls, anyone can. I am not especially brilliant.

This is the one of the worst pieces of journalism I have seen. The country except the retarded media and the homeless are doing fine. Oh yea, and those that begged the banks for money and now can't pay their mortgages! Newsweek stinks, it's so far left and in the clouds it believes itself. Leave US alone so we can get the job done you left wing nut heads. You have forgotten what America was, is and could be in favor of a fashion statement (Obama).

I think most of the 10 per centers are very rich people so even though they lost 35% of their money, they are still very rich---and satisfied.

I'm not sure where the economy will go from here but the signs aren't good. I noticed that the author was unable to pin down a specific one of the nysterious 10%. No, a drunk lady heading for the bar doesn't count, she'd say anything and then gladly change her mind for whoever bought the next round.. So who are these people who think everything is really okay and this meltdown that's been happening for two years is just a minor fluke? I can't imagine. Even the happily retired have some money tied up in various funds and futures. The wailing has been heard from beverly Hills to Boca Raton, so weher is this brain damaged 10% who thinks things are wonderful and beautiful? In the nut house, the cracker factory, the Asylum.

This article assumes that all Americans are conscious when in fact, most Americans are narcissistic and unconscious. The 10% that say things are A-OK and the 20% that still support Bush are the unconscious and intellectually challenged. A nuclear weapon could be headed their way and they would still repeat the Republican talking points. They are so identified with Republicanism, that to say anything that may contradict their fragile psyches and belief system is tantamount to suicide.

In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future.
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything in the last 80 years.
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He didnt realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that .
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

Thank you Mr. Tuttle, for shedding light on this subject. That couple was right-- when you compare to the dirty thirties. The thing the 10% are probably not taking into consideration WE COULD AND SHOULD BE DOING BETTER !! Minimalistic, head-in-the-sand attitudes would leave us in the dark ages. The greatness in this country comes from its dreams and aspirations to do better. That is at heart of human existance.

I think this article asks a question which should sound stupid to the 86% but is absolutely smart for the rest.

Only the countries whose populations are willing to work and produce have the "FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY" to come to aid of the ones whose FUNDAMENTALS ARE BAD. The ones who are scared of their own shadow without any faith in themselves or their countrymen are the 86%. Just because the majority believes something, it does not mean they are right. This 86% is the people who laughed at McCain for saying that the FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY ARE SOUND. The 10% are those with cool heads who agree with McCain are the ones who will make money hand over fist no matter who wins the Prseidency.

I AM NOT A DOOMSAYER BUT i SERIOUSLY BELEIVE THAT THIS IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBURG! i AM 74 YEARS OLD AND HAVE LIVED AND EXPERIENCED MANY UPS AND DOWNS IN THIS COUNTRY TO INCLUDE RATIONING OF GASOLINE AND PETRO PRODUCTS, SUGAR, MEAT, OILS FOR COOKING ETC. THE COUNTRY NEEDS TO GO INTO A RATIONING PHASE ESPECIALLY OF PETRO PRODUCTS. WE USED TO WALK TO THE STORE(ABOUT A MILE) IF WE NEEDED A LOAF OF BREAD, NOT JUMP IN THE CAR AND DRIVE. GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH. HARDLY ANYONE HAD TWO VEHICLES MUCH LESS ONE FOR JUNIOR TO GO TO SCHOOL IN! WE STILL PAY TAXES TO RUN PERFECTLY GOOD SCHOOL BUSES THAT RUN AT HALF CAPACITY. mEANWHILE JUNIOR RIDES TO SCHOOL IN STYLE AND SQUEELS THE TIRES AT EVEERY OPPORTUNITY! PERSONAL VEHICOLES SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED FOR KIDS. TOO MUCH FREEDOM NOT ENOUGH PRODUCTIVITY. PUT THEM TO WORK AT HOME! I HAVE NOT HEARD ANY POLITICIAN REMOTELY MENTIONING GAS RATIONING. I GUESS THEY ARE DEATHLY AFRAID THEIR CAMPAIGN FUNDING WILL DRY UP FROM BIG OIL. MEGAPROFITS FROM THE OIL GIANTS SHOULD BE TAXED AS WINDFALL PROFIT AND USED TO EITHER BUILD REFINERIES OR PLOWED INTO ALTERNATE ENERGY. MORE HYDRO ELECTRIC PRODUCTION IN SMALL WATER PRODUCTION AND ADDED TO THOSE THAT IT HAS NOT BEEN BUILT INTO FOR MANY YEARS. I REMEMBER WHEN RECYCLING FOR THE WAR EFFORT DURING WWII WAS A BIG THING. WE RECYCLED COOKING OILS, METALS OF ALL KINDS, NEWSPAPERS AND PAPER PRODUCTS AND WE WERE ONLY ALLOWED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF GASOLINE PER MONTH DEPENDING ON FAMILY SIZE, DISTANCE TO WORK, SERIOUS OCCUPATIONS FOR THE WAR EFFORT AND MANY OTHER CONSIDERATIONS. WE WENT TO TOWN ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS USUALLY ON DAD'S RAILROAD PAYDAY. MOPST OF OUR BUSINESS WAS CONDUCTED ON THAT DAY. WE ALL LIVED VERY FRUGALLY BUT NO ONE SEEMED TO SUFFER AND ALMOST EVERYONE OBEYED THE RULES AND WENT ON. PULL IN YOUR BELTS AND LETS GIVE THE POLITICO'S A PIECE OF OUR PRACTICAL MINDS AND TELL THEM WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS CRISIS AND VOTE THEM OUT IF THEY CONTI8NUE NUSINESS AS USUAL.
