The Free and Equal Elections Coalition (FREE) and the Columbia Political Union are pleased to announce that a Presidential debate will be held this coming Sunday, October 19th, 2008, on the campus of Columbia University.
ALL SIX of the Presidential candidates who appear on enough state ballots to acquire the 270 Electoral Votes needed to become President are invited. They are as follows (listed in alphabetical order by affiliation):
Constitution Party Candidate: Chuck Baldwin
Democratic Party Candidate: Barack Obama
Green Party Candidate: Cynthia McKinney
Independent Candidate: Ralph Nader
Libertarian Party Candidate: Bob Barr
Republican Party Can John McCain
The Columbia Political Union will present the debate from 8:00pm to 10:00pm in the Altschul Auditorium, located at 417 International Affairs Building. The debate will be moderated by Pacifica Radio's Amy Goodman, the host of "Democracy Now!". CSPAN will cover the debate, and live radio broadcasts are expected.
"The Columbia Political Union is committed to energizing political discourse on Columbia's campus," said Allon Brann, Columbia Political Union Publisher. "As a non-partisan organization, we work to provide students with opportunities to encounter and engage with political ideas across a wide ideological spectrum, and on a wide range of issues."
"It is with these goals in mind that we have organized this Presidential Debate: to give all candidates-- either within or outside of the political "mainstream"-- the opportunity to speak directly to students about their goals on the issues they deem critical for this country."
"We have invited all eligible candidates, and it is our sincere hope that all will participate, to ensure the substance and rigor of the dialogue which we believe is crucial at this time."
Certified letters officially inviting each candidate have been sent to the respective campaigns.
The Free and Equal Elections Coalition and the Columbia Political Union await the response from the candidates. All candidates' supporters are encouraged to contact the Presidential campaigns and urge them to attend.
The Columbia Political Union seeks to enhance involvement in the political process, domestic and international, and draw every member of the campus community into an ongoing discussion of political ideas.

A couple of weeks ago McCain said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, and his political enemies didn't like that. Big surprise; politics is a contact sport. Shortly, I heard somebody on Liberal Public Radio playing a clip of FDR saying that he had seen the dust bowl and what a terrible drought it was, and things were bad, but the American people were so good that they would survive, which I guess we who are here now can tell that they did. Now Steve has talked to some real Americans who intend to survive through today???s version of hard times, too. I think it is a good idea for the government to try to help at times like this when things are really tough, but mostly we all have to keep on keeping on. So, for whom shall we vote: McCain, who believes in us and wants to help us get through the rough spots, or Barack Hoover Hussein Obama, who says we have had it unless maybe he can rescue us if we wait for him, and just send all our money to DC and he will give back some of it if we qualify? Only one of the two says he wants to raise taxes in hard times.

Just "A flesh wound", eh? For most of us, it feels more like a tank ran over us. If this is only a flesh wound, I wouldn't want to see what your idea of a battle scar is, or a knife wound. We need to know that our goverment is sympathetic to our pain and that help will be available in the form of the economy, not only returning to normal, but soaring to new heights, so that we are stable again and our home values will go UP--not down! We need to know that money will, again, flow so that retailers will not have to close their business. We don't want to hear it will take years, or even more than a few months, we need immediate help! We don't have years or months! If you can bail out the jackasses who caused all this in just a couple of days, then allow them to waltz off to an elaberate vaccation, then surely, you can do so for the people who are suffering NOW! Plus we won't even ask for the vaccation, just to keep our homes; you speak of the "poor", and helping them, but what about the "poor" middle class, who purchased our homes without the help from those scumbags? Now we find ourselves laid off our jobs, forced into early retirement, without sufficent income to pay our debts,, and our home values are down form what they were, so selling them would cause us to lose money, and can not qualify for another home, due to loss of income, but where is the help for
us? O.K. off my soapbox, but still mad!
Tell ya what we gotta do. The 90% of us Americans that are not rich need to put on a show for the 10% who are RICH FILTHY RICH and ask them to make donations to bails us out. We could call the show AmericaThon and run it for a week or so. We 90% middle and lower class citizens also would need to come up with ideas and skits to popularize Bailing us out by the 10% who are RICH. Maybe it would work.
To careerdaytrader: You are an arrogant jerk who probably hates women. Why don't you swim to your offshore accounts and when you start to drown, the US Coast Guard will swing on by and rescue you. You are the reason we are a country filled with hatred. Good luck, buddy.
No I don't hate women, I hate MORONS who vote for MORONS who have destroyed America.
Obama believes that now we must steal from the SMART and hard working and give to the IDIOTS.
Biden says paying higher taxes is PATRIOTIC. hahaha, you Democrats are the DUMBEST people on the planet.
But luckily the catastrophe you morons have created has made the markets SUPER VOLATILE and I and other smart traders are making a FORTUNE! I just need to get it OFFSHORE as soon as I can before Obama comes in and steals it from me to give to morons who don't even know what a derivative is!
EVEN THOUGH THIS GUY COMES OFF INDA RUDE, HE DOES HAVE A POINT, THERE ARE SOME GREAT BARGAINS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. NOT JUST ON WALLSTREET EITHER. LOANS FOR HOMES ARE STILL EZ TO GET PEOPLE THE MONEY HAS NOT DRIED UP. IF YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF BUCKS BANKS WITH A BUNCH OF FORECLOSURES HAVE A FIRESALE GOING. BUY 1 AS A INVESTMENT. (THEY RENT FAST) AND IN A COUPLE OF YEARS THE VALUE WILL GO BACK AND SELL EM. THERE ARE SO MANY OPERTUNITIES OUT HERE . DON;T LET THESE KNUCKLEHEADS FROM THE MSM SCARE YOU IN ALL THERE DOOM AND GLOOM. YEA BE SMART BUY SMART AND YOU CAN MAKE MONEY. i PERSONALLY OWN SEVERAL HOMES NOW AND BOUGHT AT 60 CENTS ON THE DOLLAR. BOTH RENTED AND BRINGS ME A COUPLE OF BUCKS EXTRA A MONTH. BTW 1 OF THEM I RENT TO THE PERSON THAT I BAUGHT IT FROM.
I agree it's the morons who put this Republican idiot and a Republican majority into office who should be held accountable.
Not to mention those who take their business's off shore so they only take from the system and give nothing back while calling themselves patriots.
Careerdaytrader is a troll. Never supports his/her points and talks about crazy, easily refutable ideas. Probably just some high schooler who has listened to his parents and maybe a few things in his polisci class at school.
Obama's view of the future of America - Socialism which is the next step to Communism!! He admitted to Joe the Plumber than he wanted to spread the wealth! He said that he wanted to make everyone equal! Is America ready for Socialism? The Iranian president, Ahmadinejad, said today that he is glad to see the end to capitalism in America!! Are you glad?????
====================================================================================================
Under socialism a ruling class of intellectuals, bureaucrats and social planners decide what people want or what is good for society and then use the coercive power of the State to regulate, tax, and redistribute the wealth of those who work for a living. In other words, socialism is a form of legalized theft.
The morality of socialism can be summed-up in two words: envy and self-sacrifice. Envy is the desire to not only possess another's wealth but also the desire to see another's wealth lowered to the level of one's own. Socialism's teaching on self-sacrifice was nicely summarized by two of its greatest defenders, Hermann Goering and Bennito Mussolini. The highest principle of Nazism (National Socialism), said Goering, is: "Common good comes before private good." Fascism, said
Mussolini, is "a life in which the individual, through the sacrifice of his own private interests??realizes that completely spiritual existence in which his value as a man lies."
Socialism is the social system which institutionalizes envy and self-sacrifice: It is the social system which uses compulsion and the organized violence of the State to expropriate wealth from the producer class for its redistribution to the parasitical class.
Despite the intellectuals' psychotic hatred of capitalism, it is the only moral and just social system.
Capitalism is the only moral system because it requires human beings to deal with one another as traders--that is, as free moral agents trading and selling goods and services on the basis of mutual consent.
Capitalism is the only just system because the sole criterion that determines the value of thing exchanged is the free, voluntary, universal judgement of the consumer. Coercion and fraud are anathema to the free-market system.
It is both moral and just because the degree to which man rises or falls in society is determined by the degree to which he uses his mind. Capitalism is the only social system that rewards merit, ability and achievement, regardless of one's birth or station in life.
Yes, there are winners and losers in capitalism. The winners are those who are honest, industrious, thoughtful, prudent, frugal, responsible, disciplined, and efficient. The losers are those who are shiftless, lazy, imprudent, extravagant, negligent, impractical, and inefficient. [What about the role of luckbeing in the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time? R. R. Pope}
I would welcome Communism if it meant that I had a good paying job that won't lay me off and a reliable roof over my families head and no longer have to shop at Goodwill for the family. We started shopping at Goodwill about 6 years ago cause our combined incomes just wasn't cutting it, we can't afford anywhere else. And believe me we have seen Goodwill and other thrift stores getting flooded with more people.
the same problem.
At least 10% are not very smart.
Why does most Americans think America was the first to send a man into space. Why do most Americans think America had to create AlQuaida to fight Russians in Afghanistan, when Russia had to go there as a response to the US attacks, why do most Americans think Russia started the Georgian conflict, why do most Americans think America supported Israel before the 6 day war? Why does a majority of Americans still think Iraq had something to do with 911, why do most americans still believe that it was America that defeated Hitler? I would not say stupid, but not well informed.
All of what you said is true and like everyone who still thinks Obama is muslim and arab or that the smear campaign for terrorists and acorn are also true shows how little people want to be analytical and objective. It is easier to follow without context than think for themselves.
What I don't understand is why the same types of issues aren't brought out about McCain and Palin. McCain for years sided with the segregationists and both Liddy and Libby were close friends. He has always been friends with the right wing neocons. What about the Alaskan Independence Movement and the fact that Palin spoke before them as a keynote in 2006 and this year wished them luck and keep up the good work?
What we are talking about here is the government's ability to control the flow of wealth through taxes. How many times do we have to try "The trickle down theory" to realize it doesn't work. The economy is consumer driven by the middle class. Distributing most of the wealth to the upper 10%. always results in economic disaster. Living under the thumb of big business is not freedom. The constitution states the government should "Provide for the general welfare." There is a big difference between a government that has a social consience a socialist government.
Obama even tells us in his books what he wants for OUR COUNTRY and the United States as we know it are NOT PART of it.
Our teens and young adults are suffering. There are no more jobs for them. So they too are struggling at a time when they want to have optimism and are entering the working world. They find out that all the good paying jobs have been shipped to India -- or the field they have chosen to excel has been flooded with H1-B visas and people from overseas who have no credentials. Employers love hiring these types because it gives them more power and is close to slave labor. Good Job CIO's and CEO's we will remember.
BLAME yourselves for spending more than you make and for electing Democrats to Congress which over the last decades their policies created the mess we're in.
Firstly, my husband and I are Republicans. Secondly, we're in the 10% who think everything is A-OK. Thirdly, neither my husband or I believe our kids are "owed" anything. We've told our 3, since they were little, that they should join the military after high school, serve four years, and have their college paid for. We would never expect our government to owe them a job or anything else. But I guess that's why we're Republicans. We create our own destiny and will teach our kids to do the same.
Government owes Americans honesty and integrity. It owes tax payers to use our money responsibly. it owes us protection of our borders and of the Constitution. The Federal Government owes America many things that should be expected. Protecting us from the thieves of Wall Street was something we should have expected as tax payers. Don't say government doesn't owe us anything. They owe us 700 billion . Your head is in the sand!least!! Things are certainly NOT ok!
fleepwood, sorry that life is not A-OK for you. My husband (of 21 years) and I both hold bachelor degrees. Before having kids, we moved several times around the U.S. as we upgraded jobs and stashed away money for a house. At one point, I even worked overseas while hubby stayed here. We took a lot of chances, worked a lot of long hours, and now we're A-OK. Look fleepwood, you control your destiny. Maybe you need to move to a different city. Maybe you need to cut up your credit cards. Maybe you need to try a myriad of options to help you move closer to A-OK.
My parents are Democrats and taught me and my two siblings the same things you have taught your children. My brother served in the Navy for 6 years and now holds a Master's. My sister and I both took out student loans and worked through college and grad school. Many of my friends were raised in Democratic households and are much like me. There are also many Republicans (mostly in rural areas) on welfare and food stamps. Lack of self responsibility is on both sides of the fence.
summer4077, thanks for your thoughtful politics. My bad in lumping all Democrats in one pile. Kudos to your parents and my parents (that's who taught me afterall). The point of my post was to highlight the socialism that I hear in Obama's plans. I like capitalism. I like democracy. I like how the two really don't go together but have still created an unbelievable system. Anyway, sorry again for assuming every Democrat felt owed. best, adrienne_of_ND
No worries! I've done the same thing but have to step back and realize that this country is full of a lot of great people. Some of my dearest friends are Republicans and some are Democrats. I'm an Independent with slight left leanings.
Oh man that's a good one, from what I can remember it was a Republican that got us into debt, then a democrate got us out of debt then oh oh here comes another Republican to put us into debt. I guess now it's time to get another democrate in office to get us back out of debt. It's funny that you say it's our fault for spending more than we can afford I guess if democrates got into the business of spending other peoples money like the Republicans seem to do then we'd all have money to burn.
THE GREAT BUSH DEPRESSION
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
He perfectly predicted the current meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen next
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything seen in generations
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand how its been broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use quantum mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He was the last to know somthing was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a budget surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that
Stand up and hold them accountable
Bush isn't on the ballot this year but his policies are

The satisfieds just haven't been hit by the financial crisis yet... give 'em time. But then there are always people who see the bright side even when it is tarnished.. Let them be happy, someone needs to be. If we didn't have a few optimists to keep our chins up we'd all sink in the morass....
It's higher than 10%. I'll take more of the same, and so will many of the prosperously employed Americans. You miserable types need to get off of the news. I avoid it like the plague. I spend my time working, enjoying life, being positive. Okay, so I tried in school, got an education, worked hard/smart, and I'm reaping what I sow. The earth can blow up, and I'll be fine. It's a wonderful life.
Keep in mind, look at the tiny percent of people hanging around these completely useless news sites. It's a very small number, so yes, you are not the majority. I'd like to say i feel sorry for any of you 90%, but I'm don't. You reap what you sow, but you must sow first. Remember that all of you whiners, complainers and people who think the govt will help you. They will make you worse.
I'll also take more of the same in terms of staying on the offensive against evil people and countries. You people don't get how close they are to being able to nuke you into oblivion. Dems will lead you down that path, guaranteed.
Who knows, maybe we can change our name in a year to the United States of Detroit, or Chicago. All pits of pathetic hel. That's where it's headed with the likes of obama.
Eitherway though, I'll be fine. You won't and you don't even understand why. I'll be playing with my three yorkies if you need me.
Who is John Galt?
The better question than "Who is John Galt" is "Who the bloody hell is Ted Nugent"
If you're such a great American hero, why did you feel justified in dodging the draft to keep making millions of dollars peddling drug songs, instead of joining your brothers fighting, and dying, in Vietnam? So you could continue to stand on that tower of babble you live on now, made from the souls of those people you now hate, and long to see suffer even more? Remember, the ones that made you a millionaire by buying your stupid drug songs?
Everybody, I give you Ted Nugent, great American hypocrite.
Thought your music was pathetic, and what exactly, was the point of that mindless tripe you spewed in "Journey to the Center of Your Mind"? Cat scratch this big boy: ,,|,
So, Oh Mighty Great White Hunter, answer me this: Why in your recent interview with Sean Hannraty did you state that you "pretended" to do drugs in order to avoid the draft, BUT, in your 1979 Rolling Stone interview, you went to great lengths to explain how you did crystal meth for 30 days and covered yourself in human feces before appearing before your local draft board? I'll wait patiently for an answer, thank you in advance.
Have a nice day Ted. Maybe you and Sarah can kill some stuff together. Real patriotic Ted...
PS Do you really want to sit there on your haunches, coddling your bow and arrow, and watch 200 million people die? Seriously. Just like the glee you must have felt watching American kids die during Vietnam, huh? ???Suckers, hahahaha??? . You sir, have no soul. Soon, when this country sobers up, I hope people will remember what people like you really believe. I wish you no such ill will, though I truly believe you are a hypocrite.
PSS when the heat was on Ted, during Vietnam, you blinked, and ran to the gutter like a scared little girl. So, please, stop trying to live vicariously through our children, blindly sending them off to fight wars, when you never had the backbone for it yourself, during your time. TED=FAIL. I KNOW YOU rider.
LOL you are such a joke. You write multiple posts doing nothign but complaining about how miserable people are, and assuming every democrat is a welfare crack whore, then you have the AUDACITY to say that you never complain and only stay positive??
BTW the areas with the highest incomes in boston- Newton and Brookline, are two of the most liberal cities in the nation in how they vote. These are the most pristine neighborhoods which have no cheap housing what so ever- all town houses, high price condos, and mansions. They are home, along with Beacon Hill, to many of our state's busienss owners. That kind of kills your idea that only impoverished welfare leaches are democrats, you moron.
