I don't consdier myseld satisifed. But "nothing changed" mode. I started with Credit trouble back in the Clinto years, moved in with my parents so I could get out of debt......not much has changed. I can't get a better paying job because now you need certificates on top of the college graduation to get more pay. But who can afford to go back to college.... Even for one class. Student loans only make you more in debt...I am looking for big changes. But I don't see either candidate offereing what I believe will help me.

    • Posted By: tiredofextremes @ 10/16/2008 5:03:05 PM

I wanted to comment on what nickielane said. I understand where she is coming from. That's the one fear I have, that even if I can save enough for retirement I won't have enough left over to help my kids pay for college. Neither candidate has talked at all about that, as least as far as I've heard in the MSM. However, as long as parents are amenable to kids living at home, they can go to junior college with a $10/hour job and pay for almost all of it, moving to a 4 year school for the last two years. Even without scholarships, there are a lot of things you can do to minimize the bills.

And, in today's environment, there are many job fields where you don't have to have a prestigious school on your resume to get a good job and move up the chain from there. In truth, many employers care about your skills, so a good internship (preferably paid) will have a much greater impact on your starting salary than your alma mater.

In addition, if you are blue-collar minded, there are many trades where you can make a great living without ever getting a college degree. The trades have always had other means for job training. And, unpopular as it is currently, the military will always be a great place to get both sellable skills and get 100% tuition paid education through tuition assistance (TA) and the GI Bill.

So, in a nutshell, the situation is not as bleak as it might seem. Yet, it is undeniable that the cost of a 4year college degree is going steadily up and most parents can no longer afford to pay for a state school, let alone a private school.

I hear you, Tired; its the same with us, and many people resent the bailout of Freddie Mac & Fanny Mae, and I admit when I heard that the big CEOs went on a luxury vaccation after the bailout, I was livid! But then I suppose the poor darlings deserved it, after all scaming the country out of billions of dollars is tireing work (said VERY sarcastically!) I wish they would bail me out of my finicial problems so easily, but if they just manage to get the country stabalized so that I am able to bail muself out, then thats all I ask. Hey, but if they want to toss in a vaccation in the Bahamas for all of us, we can handle that, I'm sure, we'll party and celebrate our good fortune, then return home to reality, hopefully, a better reality.

If you think economy is bad now, it will be far worse under Obama. Remember Jimmy Carter (the white Obama), remember 14% interest rate on home loans, remember it was only a dream to buy a house. It is Ronald Regan who fixed that. Do you want the economy to be like Cuba's or Bolivia's?

    • Posted By: star3 @ 10/16/2008 7:13:23 PM

Shyam, you may be right, I use to wonder what the difference was between a recession and a depression, and now I know. During the recession of the 70s, we may have had gas lines (which was a hype, but thats another story), but we did not have the fear of losing our homes, our jobs or our lifestyles per sae, it was just an inconvenience for us then to deal with some anoying things, but this we are experiencing now is definitely different; this must be what our grandparents and parents experienced in the 30s, and it is certainy much more than just an "anoying inconvenience!". We have to bite the bullet and do what we need to do to get out of this mess, and, hopefully, learn from it, and teach our children and grandchildren how to prevent this from ever happening again. God bless us all & God help us all.

I am disappoint with both McCain and Obama!!! McCain wants to buy mortgages so people can remain in their inflated valued homes. Obama wants a 90 day delay on foreclosures to renegotiate loans on over valued homes.

What losers!!! The prosperity of the past 5 years was an illusion!!! The DOW at 14,000 now in the 8,000s was just a farce!!! Neither one of them had the guts to the voters and giving a reality check that we Americans were living way beyond our means since 2000. Neither one of them had the guts to the voters by saying the days of cheap money for credit are over!!! Instead, both of them want to pander to the voters by giving something of nothing to stay in their over valued homes.

The underlying mortgages were faulty to begin with financing the over valued homes at rates that were teaser rates with appraisals stretched to fit the loans by appraisers so the borrower could qualify so that in several years refinancing the mortgage into something "better" when the over valued homes would be worth more??? I am disappointed that neither Obama or McCain spoke to the voters with a straight face and said there will be painful sacrifices to be made as Americans have over extended ourselves way beyond our paychecks. Neither one of them said, we might not have the money to stay in our over prices homes and faulty mortgages, or keep our new cars and new adult toys, or pay down our maxed out credit cards, or pay for the college tuition or get a student loan, or see our IRAs or 401Ks values drop, or cope with food and gas prices.

Unfortunately, our generation(s) have been very impatient and wanted these financial crises fixed yesterday. Neither one who will win the White House will be able to get a second term. Just look at Jimmy Carter who promised the moon and delivered nothing. During the oil crisis, he said to lower the thermostats and wear sweaters!

I do hope that there will be very tight regulation of the markets with transparency so that the market will remain free of the excesses that characterized the past 10 years. Notice, I said the past 10 years. The root of the problems started during the Democratic years.

May God give us the patience to endure what is coming to us as a nation!

Its a mess, isn't it, Earnestt? But don't lose hope, we have been in messes before, and somehow pulled out of them to go on and still remain number one, but I hear you, buddy. Its enough to make one want to scream sometimes, but I try to look at it as a challenge; our generation was too young to really remember the depression of the 30s, although, there are still some around who do, and so this is the first time in our adult lives we have had to deal with this type of problem, not to mention the other problems going on, such as illegal immigration, the war, ect. Many of us were just getting born when the big depression in the 30s took place, so while we may have heard the word, or, later in school have been taught about it, or read about it, as children, we were not as affected as the adults, because as long as we were fed and were comfortable, thats all we required. Now, this comes along, and we ARE the adults, so we have to figure it out for our children. We will. We don't have all the answers yet, but I believe in Americans, and so I believe this too shall pass---however, not without a lot of planning and co-operation. As for who we will vote for, all we can do is chose the one we feel will honestlt do the best job, the one we feel most comfortable with---yes, I know you don't approve of either one, a lot of people don't, and many are suspicious of one or the other, but someone WILL be our next leader, so lets not give up before the battle has gotten off the ground yet. Just search your heart, go with whichever one it leans toward the most. He may surprise you, but at least you won't have tossed away your vote. Good luck to you, Ernestt, and to all of us, and God's blessings!

Many Americans are well-to-do BECAUSE WE EARNED IT. Why is it that when we're little, we're told that if we excel in school and work hard, we will eventually succeed and achieve our dreams. Yet once we become accomplished and make our parents and teachers proud, we are often told by the rest of society that somehow we're lucky and didn't deserve it. Sorry, but I've seen too FAR too many people in my lifetime act stupid, lazy, make bad choices or just decide to party or have fun instead of working hard -- and I have zero tolerance for their complaints and sense of entitlement. While "careerdaytrader" may come across as a bit elitist to some, he truly is living the American dream. Ultimately, it's you cynical, lazy or just plain stupid types who are going to spoil it for the rest of us. So either get with the program, or shut up. Just don't drag the rest of us down.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 10/16/2008 6:39:32 PM

S & P---good for you! You have earned the right to enjoy your success, so just turn a deaf ear to anyone who tries to make you feel guilty. Anyone who really wants to be successful can be if they are willing to work for it, stay focused, and find what they are best at, even if its not as high on the ladder as someone else may be. Everyone can't be doctors, lawyers, teachers or even machanics, but whatever you aspire to be, give it your best shot, and if you decide to change goals, then that is only your business. We can't all be President, but whatever you do for a living, if you are making it on your own, paying your own way, and are living the life YOU enjoy, and are not breaking any laws ir harming anyone else, then you ARE successful. Congrats, Successful & Proud! Enjoy!

I actually hope for a depression or prolonged recession. It's like evolution. The week, the leaches, the parasites, the dems, will perish. Those who have made a real effort in life, saved piles of money, have no debt, used our brain..we will watch you go down, hard. The more you leach, the harder you will follow. You should save what dignity you have left and get far away from democrats. If you made a real concerted effort to educate yourself, work smart, not let the govt fact into your life, you could NEVER be a democrat. Republicans are bad too, just the dems are so far worse. Are you sure that's who you want to be associated with. A bunch of whiny, miserable, leaches? Enjoy living in the US of Detroit in a couple of years. That's exactly where this is headed.

    • Posted By: ShanaCat @ 10/16/2008 5:10:56 PM

Hey Lliving- did you know TWENTY FIVE PERCENT of military families are on welfare???!!

Why don't you take your rant to the nearest military base and tell our heroes to their faces that they are leaches, and that you hate them for gobbling up your tax dollars? They would LOVE to meet you!

    • Posted By: ShanaCat @ 10/16/2008 4:52:19 PM

The dems are not the leaches. Here is a link which states exactly how much each state pays into the government and how much it receives FROM the government.

      http://www.taxfoundation.org/files/sr139.pdf

You call democrats leaches- yet new england, rabidly liberal, pays the MOST in taxes and receives the LEAST in federal funding and welfare. The red states, south and midwest, receive the MOST in federal aid and pay the LEAST in taxes. Now me, as a middle class Bostonian, I don't mind. I have a home in Amsterdam and I have seen how much better run that country is which has high taxes and extensive social problems. I WANT my money to help build schools in Tennessee or send a poor kid from Wyoming to college. Because poverty breeds crime and crime affects me.

But don't you DARE, don't you DARE call me and my state a leach when it is by only by our taxes that the south and midwest aren't third world countries right now.

Actually, thinningtheheard, that was pretty foul and unnecessary, too. It seems ironic that I bring Alessan to task on racism, and you post a racist comment the very next post. Thanks for the support, man. You really made a great impression of "white folks" for people to remember. Bravo...with people like you fanning the flames, racism will never die in this country. Hopefully, kids these days will continue to grow up color-blind and blind to differences in sexual orientation. Only in that can we hope that racsim will ever truly die out.

No amount of Social enginneering an knob turning by the liberal left will solve todays problems. Look to Obama's own backyard to see the failures of the liberal machine of Chicago politics. There message falls apart when the opportunity falls away. That is all they have ever accomplished with the class divisive, run the businnesses off mentallity. What this country needs is MORE millionaires and More 20 Billion Dollar a year industries., NOT Less as they constantly rail against. Let's get some figures on Obama's OWN "vote with Bush" percentage. Let''s add to that obamaq's own "vote with Congress' Liberal leadership" Percentage. AND LET'S get really Real and Factor all the politically convenient "NO VOTE?PRESENT Charade" as YES with CONGRESS AND YES WITH BUSH~! Obama Should Get absolutely NO benefit of the doubt for No Voting! The reason for all that was to avoid his OWN Positions for political convenience!! If he Runs From himself THEN SO SHOULD WE!

alessan, that is by far the most egregious use of political drivel and reverse-racism I have ever read on these boards. You claim the ENTIRE Republican party is racist and hates poor people? And you claim that blue-collar republicans are all racist? What kind of hypocrite are you? Shame on you. Crawl back into the cave you slimed out from, you bigot!!!!

9% of that magical 10% are likely the folks who have made appropriate plans because they know their 401ks will recover because they did their research and dollar-cost average their funds for long-term success, or else have jobs that allow them to weather the bumps in the road. Remember, because we're not all poor or in the top 1% many of us know better than to panic and some of us middle class are in fact not in that bad of a position. You only FEEL the pain if something is HARMING you. While I understand the cynicism of the writer of this blog, the answer really isn't that mysterious.

  • Posted By: grossy @ 10/16/2008 12:53:38 PM

The recovery will come, but only after the economy strips itself of the excesses. That's the essence of capitalism. It worked for centuries, and it will work now. In this sense what is going on is healthy, and I see good reasons to feel satisfied. At the end, when the unearned fortunes built on the housing bubble get eaten by the inflation and property taxes and all the newly-forged Realtors go broke and return to a productive business - then, hopefully, I will be able to afford to buy a house. And, by the way, foreclosures do not need to be painful - there is plenty of protection for the people who lose their home. They do not starve, and they do not even go to jail for their debt. The ones who really deserve sympathy are the people who bought overpriced homes and now continue to make their payments.

  • Posted By: alessan @ 10/16/2008 12:49:45 PM

The 10% you are talking about, are the wealthy or near wealthy, and maybe they haven't lost their jobs yet
or money in the 401k plan. If they are retired, their money is safe, not in stocks and spread out in 10 banks
making sure they don't have over $100,000. in any one account. With the infusion of 700 billion into the
banks, the limit is $250,000 per person.

Some rich and middle class using sub prime mortgages were flipping houses and buying second homes, some of the second homes they could not afford. People who lost their job and have a mortgage or high rent and no savings are not happy, Republicans are anti-human being and don't care about working class
people. The working class who are republican, just don't want to be around people of color and they
feel, John MCsame will ensure that, they don't care if they can't have a beer, so long as people of color
are not around them. Even John Murtha has admitted that people in Western, Pa. are racist and so are
the people who stood at the rallies with Palin and McCain, in the small towns they visited in the Midwest or
West. Did you speak to any of them, bet they'll say so long as a White man is in the White house perfectably a republican they are happy, they are part of your 10%..

I think Senator McCain has secured two votes, one from Joe the Plumber and one from Joe SixPack.
The rest of us who care about the economy, who prioritize energy independence, health care reform and education and who feel a physical sense of ailment and sickness at the memory of the last eight years need to cast our votes in favor of an intelligent, eloquent, caring and compassionate man, the "cool hand at the tiller" who even McCain feels we need. That "cool hand" is certainly not Senator McCain.

Our politics suck in America. Basically all we do is have adult temper tantrums, and engage in the proverbial toddler sticking out our tongues saying " my daddy is better than your daddy"

Its really nonsense. every four years we get to "vent" about how ###### up things are and how bad the candidates are. (as if one of us REALLY can fix anything).

we ALL play passenger driver, second string quarterback

its symptomatic of a helpless people "looking" for a savior and while "looking" lashing out for their problems encountered from those who "rule"

truth is....everybody inately looks for a saviour to protect them from mis-fortune.

and when mis-fortune befalls us we say its "those guys fault".
i guess when it all boils down ALL of us are subject to a higher power. both visible and invisible.

to us...........are expectation is that the government IS supposed to protect us...militarily, financially, educationally, healthily (if thats a word), and otherwise. (and i agree)

yet we say "less government" lol! lol! WHAT A CROCK
john mccain is crazy. he says let the person decide on their healthcare.

yes.......BUT the government ought to either provide free healthcare across the board or make it very affordable.

yes these things are government's responsibility.

so n fact we do need government. not less.

when people say less........they stuff like religion, morals, etc.

but hell.everything else? "you betcha" (sarah pitbull palin)

    but seriously.......our political process sucks!!

I am exempt. I couldn't run out of money if the world collapsed for good, so it ain't happening. Trust me. People like me can make it no matter what. We aren't reliant on anyone, like the govt. I took advantage of the endless opportunities the US has provided. You? Drank beer all weekend and hung out with dipshits probably. You're still being an idiot hanging around newsweek, a non-objective entertainment "news" site. Go change. It's never too late. Obama will sink you. Look at any inner city that THEY have lead. DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ECONOMIES/cultures FAIL, WAKE UP. Its not about the money, its about the protection and vested interests which the US represents. When cultures fail as throughout history the spoils go to the newcomers. That means the nation in the lead usually takes everything away from you because you have no national sovereignty and you end up in prison or worse.

No one reading this, or even older than most of the posters, has a clue what hardship is. If you remember what nursing home from hell you deposited the old geezers, drop by with some donuts and half-off flowers and ask them what a real depression was like.

Ask them what ration books and living without such things as coffee, nylon, oil and meat was like. Ask them what the A meant on the windshield of the car. Or even go back to 1979 and why having an odd or even license plate was important. Ask them about having to buy war bonds to fund World War 2.

Wow, another store selling overpriced crap closed, big deal. Milk is on sale now for $2 a gallon and gas will drop below $3 by Sunday. The "market", which has been perverted into nothing more than a legalized casino, is probably going to be in the 9,500 to 9,750 in 10 days. If you had invested 5 years ago in any of the Market indexes, and not traded on the 1/4 point like Gordon Gekko, you would still have gains of 5% to 25%.

We got rid of some of the car dealerships, another big deal. How many cars do we actually need to buy? We have an insane surplus of cars in America. I have 5 gas stations, 3 Starbucks and 8 burger and chicken joints within 1 mile of my house. Do I really need that much cholesterol and fat that close that I can drive to it.

We are going to spend record amounts on Coffee, Movies and Cell Phones this year. Billions of Dollars in the year of the meltdown. If you add gift cards, we are spending more on buying crap that ever before. Retail sales do not include gift cards, which increase store sales upwards of 10%.

And we still get sold a bill of goods about Senator Government, I mean Obama.

Mencken was right, no one ever went broke underestimating the inteligence of the American consumer...or the American voter.

Great and sincere congratulations! When you see your closest or cheapest gas station close, you can't shop the sales any longer at your favorite store; when all of your 'good neighbors' move away to find new jobs and creeps move in around you, perhaps you will miss the good ol' days when *everyone else* seemed to be doing okay too. No one truly lives in a protective bubble. We are not in dire straights...but I still have compassion for those adversely affected by current economic conditions.

I'm one of the satisfied Americans, I did not refinance my home to support an extravagant lifestyle, I took advantage of the low fixed rate home loans and have a %5.25 fixed home loan, I always knew adjustable rate mortgages were for suckers, I never moved 100 miles from where I worked so I could live in a great big home in the middle of nowhere, I never owned a gas guzzler (I bought a 4.6 V8 in 2001), I still own the same truck today, I don't buy a new vehicle every year to keep up with the Jones's, I have been able to pay for my children's college educations (No government loans, grants or handouts.), Is anyone man enough to take responsibility for their short sighted decisions and admit it was their own insatiable desire for material goods that was their self inflicted financial suicide. Fortunes were made in the biggest pyramid scheme ever, where people bought homes they could not afford for prices that had no basis in the value of the home but were based on the inflated price of the home that sold yesterday. PT Barnum said it best "There's sucker born every minute".

    • Posted By: earth3650yahoo @ 10/16/2008 12:14:32 AM

Great job! The last that I checked? *All* loans definitely need to be paid back. But one of the big pushes of the current administration was to put as many people into homes as wanted to buy a home. Now we know that a lot of the people who wanted a home just couldn't afford a home they wanted to live in. And, prices were rising for everything; jobs were flat-lined in payscales...but we were still told that everything was just fine. I can definitely see how people would (or could) be oblivious of what was to come.

Good for you! A REAL American here. A SMART American here. I really feel nothing for the stupid morons out there who did NOT live like this person and I and now must pay the consequences of it.

Careerdaytrader, you seem to feel that everyone who doesn't have a 5 figure salary and is not gambling in the stock market, is a loser, made bad decisions in life and don't deserve to get ahead. I am one of those people who started working at age 14 (not so young of age as when you started working),got an education and have my own business. I don't know about your business , no wait, I forgot you are Donald Trump's clone, but my business is hurting because guess what..I just so happen to be in the REAL ESTATE profession. I am a real estate agent and certified residential appraiser. There are some colleagues out there who frankly, deserve to get their license/certifications taken away because of fraudulent business practices that have led to our present situation, ie., artificially inflating values, etc, but to say that I'm going through hard times because I didn't work as HARD or as SMART as you is an insult. I do agree that zero regulation in the economic sector is not smart and yes I am hoping to see what the government can do to help, after all, if credit tightens and re-financing gets harder to do because of the current crisis, then my only choice is to keep on working hard and at the same time hope government intervention helps with something that's out of my hands. I am in no way saying that you should not have Free Enterprise, but no extremes in life have ever led to positive results. Don't generalize and overlook the fact there are hard working people out there that didn't live your righteous life and as a professional, I'm am going to overlook ethics at least for a couple of seconds and salute you with one finger you ##@":!

I bet you wouldn't be getting screwed if the gov't hadn't forced banks to give loans to people who couldn't afford them ...
