I am one of the ten, and I will be the first to admit I am actually excited by what is happening, not because I am a Republican OR a Democrat, but rather because I am neither, and have abject contempt for them both.

You see my friends; you have all been being collectively played for fools for over a generation. Our so called free markets are nothing more than a Ponzi scheme designed to separate fools from the fruits of their labors. How many of you childishly thought you could get rich buying houses or stocks and selling them a few weeks later? Wealth is only built by producing goods or providing services. It is not produced by manipulating paper. When one is involved in manipulating paper, someone wins, and someone loses. Guess what? YOU LOSE. How many of you march around with buttons for McCain or Obama, actually believing either of them will change a damn thing? So now as you have your homes, your land yachts and your illusionary life savings stripped away, you suddenly all want someone to blame? BLAME YOURSELVES.

My once proud nation has been laid low by immature, indoctrinated, self centered and idiotic individuals who fell for a line of nonsense not worthy of a late night infomercial, and shall now be held down by the lackeys they have populated their so called government with!

So as you sit and snipe at each other with pathetic partisan bickering and embarrassingly uninformed rhetoric, I want to say thank you all, because although you may have managed to steal my country from me, I shall return the favor by stealing your homes and retirements.

Better than it all burn than we are the final superpower that collapses of its own avarice and greed and leads our planet to the final dark ages.

Was that Hummer really worth it? Perhaps we can bury you in it.

Whine whine whine. You need some motor oil for that engine. Did you want some cheese with that?

Hey! Guess what? There are plenty of McCain supporters and Obama supporters who agree that you can't fix an economy by moving money around! But guess what we don't do? Assume, generalize, and demean our countrymen, and prophesy the apocalypse!

      • Posted By: Willian C DeMuth @ 10/14/2008 10:36:50 AM

        Whine?

I am one of the happy remember? You and your ilk got what you deserve and I am enjoying every minute of it!

Economic Darwinism has finally proven valid and I am endlessly pleased. The barbarians are at the gate, and man, are they pissed!

I turn not to a God, nor to a Christian fascist government for hope, but only to myself and others of honor.

Beware the society that will defraud its own elderly, for the next step is they will consume their own young.

I guess I am somewhat satisfied in my own personal life but NOT satisfied where things have been going. I used to work for a Fortune 500 company. When it became crystal clear that they no longer wanted an R & D Department (apparently they knew everything there was to know about making beer and saw no further reason to keep doing research to improve the product and packaging) I left, sold my house that had doubled in value and moved to a new location where I purchased a house free and clear. I have always lived within my means and have been horrified watching the housing bubble become bigger and bigger. My depression era parents had always instilled in me the value of living as debt free as possible. Republicans have always accused the Democrats of being tax and spend liberals. Since Reagan was in office the Republican party has gone from being responsible financially to being the party of "spend and stick it all on the credit card for future generations to pay". The government has not lived within it's means. Business and government together tacitly encouraged people to follow the same poor financial practices and people did so with gusto.

Republicans need to get back to basics and encourage people to live within their means. If elected again they need to lead by example. They also need to stop putting mindless faith in the FREE MARKET FAIRY. There need to be some rules established instead of forever deregulating and then acting shocked & appalled that people responsible for financial institutions actually become greedy and corrupt.

Nice comment.. Good for You! I am 54 years old, have 3 boys, 2 have graduated from Arizona State, and one is a freshman at Virginia Tech. I was "extravagent" - nice home, used cars for everybody, and they were all in sports - that was alot of money! But we live for our children. However, I was fortunate that my ex is a professor at Virginia Weslyan, so my youngest son is being taken care of. I guess my point is, now, I am unemployed, living in an apartment, old truck, but I am satisfied!

I've been wondering something about that poll for a while. It has often been used to site problems with the Republican party--but that does not make sense. For instance, President Bush could be dissatisfied with the way the country is going because it is going to elect Obama president. On the other hand, a true believer in the Democratic Party could be satisfied as they see a Democratic hegemony coming. And of course there are also those who understand how resilient this country is: and are reminded of "Robin Hood: Men in Tights", when Little John falls in a stream less than an inch deep and starts screaming about how he is drowning.

Then of course, there are the people who personalize the question. They look at how they are doing (and not necessarily just the economic factors) and see that their life is going quite well.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 10/13/2008 11:04:16 PM

Democratic Hegemony? I think that assumes cohesion that just does not exist in the Democratic Party. Really, there are in fact two, the DNC and DLC. There are people in my party (yes, I am a D) who I wouldn't care to have at their own hanging, if I had to be present. There are a ton of jokes about our organizing ability resembling a circular firing squad. We have defense hawks, budget hawks, and social conservatives, as well as the liberals that the party opposite so decries. As a Southern Blue Dog, I tend to be on the more conservative side of my party. They do not throw eggs at me, or run when I come in the room, etc. I take my turn and speak, and then accept the outcome. I don't have to win, I just want my say.
Most of my family are Republicans, living on the left coast, banished into an electoral minority. They are for the most part almost hateful of my affiliation.
My dissonance with the loyal opposition began with the behavior of Mr. Atwater, and has continued through Mr. Rove and now Mr. Schunemann. Hateful behavior is a big turn off.
The hegemon is and has been the United States, once we adopted pre-emptive war for political transformation. Look up PNAC, and their goals. Democratic Hegemony is an oxymoron, on many levels.

All it means is that 90% of the country are crybaby's........ it's an ignorant poll that is meaningless..... its such a WIDE open QUESTION you can make it mean what ever you want it to mean......and we know WHAT the MEDIA wants it to mean, cause they HATE Republicans .. Newsweek -- why don???t you do a POLL on the MEDIA.... is the MEDIA going in the "WRONG" direction or the "RIGHT" direction

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 10/12/2008 9:37:57 PM

Hey, I'm not part of the media and I dislike Republicans these days - they're all pretty much intellctual paupers and have nobody really outstanding to run for President, which is why Obama will win. The country is crying out for responsible, intellectual leadership. I guess if you're average, you'll defend the GOP to the max, but the tide's turning and it's not favoring the mediocre factor -- it's cool to be smart, sophisticated, worldly wise, savvy, astute, intelligent, excellent.... get on board or stay mired in your populist fervour.

While I will support my parties candidates, if Obama chokes out on a pretzel, I will consider it a sign of the end times.

These CEOs, bankers, and politicians who didn't see this coming, and certainly did their part (members of both parties) to get us into this mess, are all highly educated people. MBAs and JDs can be trumped by a degree in good old-fashioned common sense.

My goodness, there is good ol' cani77 again. Honestly, you really are getting annoying! What are you, an ACORN person, or one of newsweak's editor's granddaughters?

    • Posted By: Braes @ 10/13/2008 10:45:21 PM

Other than being a batch of goobs that look like election-thieves, you assign far too much power to ACORN. As for the megaspam, it is in most threads. If it were posted once, I'd be able to pass it faster, like a watery stool.
But I do agree with some of his points. Hell I agree with a lot of people, including ones I drop smart-assed bombs on. I will get pretty pissed about election irregularities of any kind. We are starting to look like the countries we used to invade to straighten things out.

    Small Victory--Congratulations.

Gallup's spin is, "We include Nader's name, but the media exclude him." Nice try Gallup. That's 50.5% true. Big media excludes Nader. But over 99.5% of the people Gallup poll never hear the name Nader--or any of the other third party candidates for that matter.

Gallup had been asking: McCain, Obama, Neither, or Other. Less than 0.5% say "other," compared to 3-5% who say 'Nader' when his name is included in the main question.

Last week, we asked you, our supporters, to contact Gallup to ask why they were not including us in their poll question.

Hundreds of you called Gallup directly.

Gallup listened to you. They had Nader and the other third Party candidates listed by name in their poll out this week.

Support for third party candidates explicitly named, increased tenfold over Gallup's previous methodology employed in their daily polls, which had third party candidates registering less than half a percent combined vote.

    THE GREAT BUSH DEPRESSION
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
He perfectly predicted the current meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen next
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything seen in generations
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand how its been broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use quantum mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He was the last to know somthing was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a budget surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that
Stand up and hold them accountable
Bush isn't on the ballot this year but his policies are
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

A teacher in Elmira , New York , who is a McCain supporter, asked her 4th grade class, "How many of you are McCain fans?" Not really knowing what a McCain fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands, except for Little Johnny. The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different.

Little Johnny said, "Because I'm not a McCain fan." The teacher asked, "Why aren't you a McCain fan?" Johnny said, "Because I'm a Democrat. "The teacher asked him why he's a Democrat. Little Johnny answered, "Well, my Mom's a Democrat and my Dad's a Democrat, so I'm a Democrat." Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, "If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?" With a big smile, Little Johnny replied, "That would make me a McCain fan."

You are very right that America and the world in general has "had worse" just as the Black Knight says to Arthur. We are no where near the level of the great depression. We are almost to the point of the days of the oil embargo of the 1970s though. No-one these days seems to remember that an economy has to have its ups and downs. That every economy continually cycles between inflation and recession with a rare dip into depression. My guess is that either a bunch of us slept through all the times economics was covered in school or they have forgotten what they have learned and replaced it with what the media tells them.

Irregardless of what the governments of the world do the world economy will get better and eventually cycle back towards bad then good, over, and over, and over.

I think this article asks a question which should sound stupid to the 86% but is absolutely smart for the rest.

Only the countries whose populations are willing to work and produce have the "FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY" to come to aid of the ones whose FUNDAMENTALS ARE BAD. The ones who are scared of their own shadow without any faith in themselves or their countrymen are the 86%. Just because the majority believes something, it does not mean they are right. This 86% is the people who laughed at McCain for saying that the FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY ARE SOUND. The 10% are those with cool heads who agree with McCain and are the ones who will make money hand over fist no matter who wins the Presidency. See the DJIA right now
