Thanks for this piece. It caused me to dig a little deeper on this topic, especially about risk for heart disease. For anyone else interested, here's a great summary about the role of stress in developing heart disease: http://www.womentowomen.com/heartdiseaseandstroke/riskfactors.aspx

Economic stress also affects women who are pregnant- for good and bad. If you are pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant please read this important post: http://www.beyondprenatals.com/2008/10/what-does-state-of-economy-have-to-do.html

Did you know that under Bush, we generated 19% more revenue under his plan!!! But because of our liberal congress, we spend 50% more liberally than in Clintons years. Strange huh. And when the REPUBLICANS tried to pull the plug in 1995 and in 2005, by John McCain, they were shot down by who. Thank you democrates for really caring for the poor.

I agree; how about an article depicting the stresses wives put on working fathers who want the opportunity for their wives to stay home and for the kids to have everything working two jobs? Guess not. I hate the fact that in this economic turmoil that a woman would get my job before me in the engineering realm just for being a woman, not for being a better worker. I have a family and WIFE to support also. Not just yourself and a child. And while we (men) are designed to situation like these better (because of the layer theory), we generally wouldn???t stress ourselves out this way. Because if we do then we have women who will say that we are not good supporters, or good emotional carriers. I think women need to get off their horse a little. Just a suggestion.

How is it that this became the battle of the sexes. I supported my ex-husband and my three kids without any help. He was a deadbeat who had no excuse for not working except that he was lazy. Just like MOST men, I never got to stay home with my kids. Unfortunately the article is correct that there are SOME doctors out there that do not pay attention to women who complain of symptoms that could be heart related. Just like anything else generalities do not fit every situation. There are some industries where there are more women managers than men. Statistically the very top slots still go to men. I work in a fortune 500 company. There are many more men in upper management than women. Life isn't fair and it is definitely stressful. As the article said. Do something fun for yourself and Get over it.

Your solution is to go to your doctor?... what if you cannot even afford health insurance, add this one to the already mounting stress... when you hit rock bottom, the only way is up... "come to Me all you who labor, and I will give you rest... " Jesus Christ

This must be the biggest horse**** article I have ever read. I am so sick and tired of reading how woman are hit harder in this econimic crisis and just overall in generall. Here is a news flash...the year is 2008 not 1958. I work in the insurance industry and see the majority of managerial/supervisory positions worked by females who are making just as much if not more that their male counterparts. I am a divorced father who has 50% custody of my daughter and have been victimized by sterotypes and plane ingnorance of others who enjoy generalizing all men into 1 catagory. I am so tired of hearing how woman are oppressed and hit harder with stress than males because "they just want to help everyone". The anger I get from these comments cannot be put into words. Even commercials portray men as bumbling idiots either sitting on a couch or injury themselves out of stupidity. It's just not right....woman have been given all the opportuninties as men (deservedly so) so why should I still be a victim of woman being given credit for just being a woman?

Yes, the economy is taking a down turn for a while. Stressing over it is useless and illogical. Remember there are people in the world with real stressors--people who are homeless, people with serious disease, people in slavery even who don't have choices.
All this talk of 'turmoil' sometimes makes me steam. Until we're all standing in soup lines, I don't wanna hear it. So drive less--and maybe you'll just have to consider selling/trading a vehicle for a more affordable one (hey, I had to do just that myself!). Buy less expensive food.....it won't kill the family. One might need to trade in their business suit for a smock and take a job one normally wouldn't--maybe the pay stinks, but suck it up at least it's something. Might have to cancel that big vacation and hit a waterpark or zoo closer to home, too.
Small changes add up and are solutions to the growing problem, and proaction works better than 'worrying' about it. Don't watch TV because of 'stressful news'? Give me a break. If that's enough to get a reaction in some people I'd hate to see them deal with something more serious.
Lack of compassion on my part? Not really, I'm in this thing too and have had to make changes. I just try to appreciate what I do have, things really could be far worse. -

Consider this: women, as a rule, generally look deeper than men at not only people, but situations. They have an inner desire to ''fix'' everything for everyone in their families. They want to problem-solve for their children, grown or young, and for their friends and neighbors, every time there is a crisis. The outcome usually comes back to haunt us, and we are accused and criticized for worrying too much, over-reacting and even meddling as our thanks for our caring and logical nature.
The outcome of our place in life has come to the forefront through this election. I think you girls out there know what I feel and mean here.
Bottom line: we are OVERLOOKED, ultimately. We are nothing but sounding boards for trouble to bounce from even though we specialize in logic and solution for our families and friend. It is very disheartening..
By reading these few posts I can see one of the many stressful things in my own day is the fact that many women DO NOT EVEN REALIZE THEY ARE OVERLOOKED. It is an underlying stress factor that no one has addressed at all here.
None of the problems these posters are worrying about will ever change until one of us is able to use our reason, empathy and passion for logical solutions in a way that is recognized ... and RESPECTED.
It is just that simple, really. -

Of course there's the worry factor. Why? You know this is really scary. Good American citizens like you are losing their jobs and good American companies, large and small, are sinking.
And McCain spends all that time last night trying to character assassinate Obama. Notice how Obama didn't go after McCain's character to nearly the same degree and instead talked about things that matter?
While McCain was blathering about Ayers and ACORN, Obama talked about the disastrous economic crisis Bush and McCain deregulated us into over the past 8 years and the two wars they are leaving us with, not to mention the fact that bin Ladin is still running around loose 7 years after 9/11 in the face of Bush and McCain.
And I love McCain's attempt to run away from Bush after all those years supporting his economic and foreign policies. What would McCain do different than Bush? Really, I can't figure it out.
By the way, during the few times that McCain did talk about policy, his approach seemed really off. Cutting earmarks is not going to fix our economy. We need a lot more. One of McCain's advisors needs to tell him that, or more likely maybe they did and McCain didn't listen.
And here's another bad big idea from McCain: a $5000 tax credit to buy healthcare that will cost far more for many people and wreck employer provided health care (yes even the conservative Chamber of Commerce admits this).
So where does this leave us? Do we go with the guy who offers more of the same disastrous hate politics that got us into this mess, or do we vote for a smart, capable, steady politician who offers change? -

Yep, there were a lot of women working in IT that during the past 8 years have had to train East Indians to take their jobs. I've seen it again and again from major utility companies, entertainment/media companies, health care providers, clothing and car manufacturers, etc etc. The list goes on and on with a huge number of women's jobs (millions) that have been shipped offshore.
