I would't go as far to say that obesity is an illness that people can't control. Yes you can. Stop eating fake processed food and you will see a difference. These fake processed food not only desensitize your taste buds and contain what your body percieves as "toxins" but have been shown to cause more weight gain then real food (why do youthink obesity increases with a western diet...because we eat a lot of fake processed food) I would say the problem is the false advertising by food companies and parents letting their children eat crap food. There are obese children because thier parents let them eat whatever they want. The genetic component relates to how much crap the child can eat before it become obese. For example, no added sugar, Sure they didn't add sugar, but they did add a fake sugar which in most cases is worse than the real sugar, because people are trying to reduce their calories. So stop trying to use genetics as an excuse why do you think so many religions talk about temptation and control. Control your cravings. After a week you won't crave that nasty food anymore. Many times the fake food can cause depression because you don't feel good in general because you're lacking the nutrients your body actually needs.

Apologies for double post. Also, my wording is poor. There are LOTS of reasons for people to be overweight. My comments are strictly in response to this research, not to all overweight people!!

I don't think the problem is just a lack of satisfaction. I think it is the gap between the expected pleasure, and the reality. It may also be, that the expectations are so out of line with reality, that they therefore experience less pleasure DUE to the fact that they are not immediately wowed by the milkshake.

Thin people don't expect such gratification from food...it isn't a big deal. So whatever positive results we get from eating, are fine. Overweight people have expectations that are out of line with reality, so they keep eating, trying to reach their expectations.

Isn't dopamine the chemical they treat the levels of with antidepressants? I wonder if there is a link there.

mammasays, I think you are wrong. techresmgt is just another one of those weak males that blames all his problems on women and does not take responsibility for his own thought and actions. If he is married, he probably abuses his wife, if he's not marrier, ladies beware! techresmgt and all others like you get some help!

Actually, I myself have struggled my whole life to control my eating behavior. I am not a scientist, but honestly, I feel this is more hormonal. Before menopause, I could eat the doors off a VW. Now, I tend to eat more "normally", which is to say 3 squares. I can definitely say that prior, I had this "voice" that had me thinking of food almost constantly. Those of you who have never had a problem with food can be very smug & pious. Clearly those people have other issues that if they were to put things in perspective, would likely be more understanding. As for techresmgt....you are either single for a reason or in a very unhappy marriage.

No mammasays, I think you are wrong. techresmgt sounds like one of those weak males that blames all his issues on women instead of taking responsibility for his own thoughts and actions! If he is married, I presume he abuses his wife!! Get help!

Interesting to see what would happen if the study was conducted in countries where obesity hasn't reached the epidemic levels of the US.

Techresmgt: sorry to hear of your serious misogyny. Your problem, not ours.

Gosh, we're waiting with bated breath to hear the results of this scientific study. How can we possibly live another minute without the female-centric media shoving more female-centric information down our throats, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year? Please, oh, great media, tell us more. Here is a study that is of interest to men worldwide: Why do women nag 24 hours a day? Please sink your scientific brains into that topic, we really want and need to know.

Not exactly. I sometimes want to eat chocolate for the sake of eating chocolate. Eating is not purely based on needs--otherwise there would be no explanation for a person to stuffing themselves or drinking alcohol. There is also a pleasure component to food.

Yet another scientific JOKE. Why would this SPECIFICALLY show that obese people derive addictive pleasure from food as opposed to actual hunger? When the body isn't getting the nutrition it NEEDS it is in a constant state of hunger and the brain indicates that it needs glucose. That is food and sugar cravings respectively. Give a person the nutrition needed, get rid of the bacteria and viruses and parasites in the body causing the lack of nutrition absorption and you'll find that people no longer FEEL the need to eat, because the body is adequately balanced. This article is EXTREMELY misleading, you didn't find a gene you found an OPINION.

Gee, take a look at what's in the American diet and be blown away at how little nutrition there is in it. THEN you can answer VERY simply that obesity is a cause of MALNUTRITION, and the body's desperate seeking of GOOD NUTRITION. Put health back in our foods FDA, stop okaying all the CRAP on the shelves of the grocery store!!!!

It must be nice to be so self righeous that you can pass judgement on people you do not know based on what you think you see.
