The Howard Stern piece simply illustrates that 50% of an electorate votes for whom it believes it can trust and leaves the decision making up to the leader. This is the only explanation for much of the Republican support as well. The election then turns on the tiny discriminating margin of independent minded people who use reason rather than intuition. Given a 50/50 choice reason then still wins out at the margin.
Many voters, like most family members don't base their support on policies but with whom they identify with. Their intuition (can't call it reason) is that people whom they identify with will probably identify with them.
The rationale for the democratic process, blame the Greeks, is that in trying to garner and maintain support the candidate is far more likely to do things that satisfy his constituency than otherwise. The electorate don't need to be highly intelligent, that's what leaders are for.
Because they realize that when you are given only a choice between two evils, participation in the sham only gives one of those evils a statistical legitimacy.
Does it really matter who wins? Is everything blamed on him really Bush's fault? Can any candidate really follow up on all the promises made during the campaign? Can we really trust the voting system? Why should we bother to vote when it just doesn't matter? We've survived the last 20 years with Bush, Clinton and Bush so obviously it just doesn't matter.
Yeah of course it doesn't matter. We should just let people who care about politics run the country. Like egomaniacal people. Hitler was cool.
Get your head out of your ass.
Men are morons. And I'm a 47 year old one
I would rather have soft ppo
Maybe its time to let wives vote twice. once for themselves and once for their spouses, Men are so used to having their wives do all the mundane/boring tasks anyway. They are to busy with self gratification why should they bother
mshores415: That may be the way it works in your "house", but CERTAINLY not in mine. It appears you are a female or whatever! Maybe if you had taken the time and found a "REAL MAN" you wouldn't be of such a deviated mindset. Good luck with the rest of your so-called life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would rather have soft ppo
Why should they? They been told since little boys girls know better.
I understand that voting is 'our civic duty', as is holding a position in public office. In saying that, once these hyenas(politicians) start doing 'their civic duty', I'll do mine!
Please read Lawyer Dad's comments and Frank All's comments they state the reason men don't vote.
Does it really matter who the president is. other than someone to blame our problems on? How much power does the president really have? Are all our problems really Bush's fault? Do any candidates actually follow up on all the promises made during the campaign when they take office? Why should we take the time to go to the polls when it doesn't really matter who the president is and we can't believe the promises they make during the campaign? If we can survive 20 years of Bush/Clinton/Bush then obviously it just plain doesn't matter.
LOOK NO FARTHER THAN THE ELECTORAL COLLAGE!
UNTIL EACH VOTE IS COUNTED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER THEN IT WILL CHANGE!
THE ELECTORAL COLLAGE IS OUTDATED AND NEEDS TO BE ABANDONED!
I am a 46 year old male who has never registered to vote and never will for the simple fact that voting only puts the best liar in the most important job in the United States. There is nothing etched in stone that say's
what the candidates promise they will be held to. They tell you what you want to hear and do what they want once elected. You're not even voting for the real person, you're voting for their speech writer, their public relations person etc. without them they are an empty vessel so far out of touch with the working class. George bush wasn't even aware that gas was over $4.00 a gallon until someone told him! Yes that's the kind of person I want running the country as for not complaing if you don't vote, well that is called freedom of speech and I can sleep soundly every night knowing I didn't put George Bush in the white house.
You have to look at the system we are in. Since we operate on first-past-the-post elections here in the U.S., politicians are large-scale interest aggregators. These people cannot be in politics at all if they do not try to win 50% + 1 of the vote. That's how our system is set up.
Granted, I would like it if we had proportional representation and two-round presidential elections, because it allows politicians to test the waters of how strong various interests are.
Then again, for that to happen, we'd have to really push for REAL REFORM in public campaign financing. If people's interests continue to be aggregated unequally by the amount of money they can pour into an election, then certain monied interests will always be disproportionally represented by politicians.
I don't think either major party is interested in reforming our system, and I'm honestly not sure it could happen without a massive groundswell of scientifically analyzed political support for systems of representation which more accurately aggregate the various interests of our nation.
Unfortunately our system is set up so they presidents and many of our other elected leaders are interest aggregators. It would help if we had proportional representation so people could vote for those who more closely support their actual views. As it is now, our politicians are out there for political survival and try to find the interests of 50% + 1 of the population, as that is how our system is set up.
Unfortunate AGAIN is that our interests do not get aggregated equally. Because we have no well-structured public campaign finance system, people's interests tend to be aggregated by who has more money. We need to reform our system and stop pointing fingers at those who operate within the system as well as they can.
The solution is obvious: allow men to vote through their cable or satellite t.v. hook-ups using a remote control. Armchair elections. Perfect for the lazy man in his Laze-Boy recliner. Obviously, there will need to be an election half-time with scantily-clad cheerleaders. Goooo Donkeys! Goooo Elephants!
Consider the choices of candidates.
This country is not going to be fixed by either major political party. They are ALL too entrenched in the "good ole boy network" to fix anything. I'm sure either Obama or McCain will win this election, and I frankly don't care which. I have no confidence in either one. If I don't vote for the candidate who I think has the most reasonable answers to what is ailing this country, then I am part of the problem. I'm voting Libertarian from now on. The Libertarian ideals of keeping government small and out of my personal business really appeal to me. Sure, some of them have some kooky ideas, but that's what a balanced government is supposed to control. Small government, low taxes, personal accountability. It all appeals to me.
Worthitall, the Libertarian party here meets monthly, I attend every couple months just to keep informed. I agree with a lot of their ideas, I even send them money now and then just because I think this country needs a strong 3rd party. The 2 party good ol boy system is killing us. But I think in some areas they get a bit over the edge, open borders, basically no government oversight of business, legalization of drugs. Unfortunately, in today's world, we can't rely on human sensibilities, decency and common sense to regulate peoples actions. They have a good base though, I think if they moderate a bit on some of their issues they'd stand a stronger chance of getting some candidates into higher office. It would be great to see.
The point of voting is choosing a leader in which you feel is best qualified to run this country. Sure not all candidates are perfect and have spotless records but you still should choose. There are people in this world who wish they could have a say in who will be their leaders so stand up and vote because you have been given the right to choose by being an American!
If anyone knows anything about statistics, it really doesn't matter. Once you have a large enough random sample of people voting, the election results would be the same if you had additional people voting.
It's a waste of time. You are just changing one set of thieves for another. I view politcians as nothing more than lairs, thieves and hookers.
chazz, how do you propose to get rid of them if you don't vote them out of office? Guess why they are that way, because they can be. Wouldn't it make more sense to get involved in whatever party suits you better, hey, there's a few 3rd party's out there too, get involved in the process of selecting better candidates, working to support them, and getting these lying losers out of office. I'm sure there's a local party office near you, they have delegate conventions, they work the primaries, you can even effect laws and bills by working with your legislative delegation (you even know you have one). It's exactly the attitude you demonstrate that has allowed our current bunch of crooks to get in office. The got elected and stay there because there is an organization behind them making it all possible. It takes an equally powerful organization to drive them out. If everyone thinks like you it becomes extremely difficult to make a change. People need to act, get involved, if we're ever going to make changes. People have to be involved before politicians can be responsive to them, you think your senator knows what you want if all you do is vegetate in your Lazy Boy and complain? Have you written to him lately, not some lazy e-mail, written a real letter, it gets more attention when they see you've taken the time and effort, , have you gone to a town meeting, talked to him(or her)? How about contacting the outreach director of representatives you do support and offered to help? If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem, it's that simple.
OK, so how does all this affect the outcome of the election?
