In Kansas, according to state law, abortions after 21 weeks can only be done to prevent maternal death that would be caused by the pregnancy or to "prevent substantial a nd irreversible impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman." Another part of the law requires the health reason to be documented and sent to the state. These forms have listed "health" reasons including depression and going to a rock concert.

Consideration of the health of the mother is the law of the land and the view of the majority. McCain's position to the contrary, expressed with finger quotes around "health" as if it's some bogus issue, will further alienate most voters.

I hope you realize that if it were up to the MAJORITY of the people in the US.... things would be a lot different. Judges wouldn't be overturning the vote of the people for some "PC" decision.

I am really disillusioned by some of these comments. We all had access to a free education yet so many of you sound extremely uneducated, ignorant, and racist. First, Barack Obama is a Christian and the references to him as "Hussein" are fear mongering. exactly what Bush practices and Hitler before him. Second, do a little research on abortion laws before spewing your ignorance on us all. Statistics show crime went down 16 years after Roe vs Wade. Sixteen is the time most teens begin their lifes of crime. Not a coincidence. If you are against abortion, don't have one. Third, we need to vote for the candidate that will be best for our country . If you vote only for a pro-lifer you get the economic situation we are in today. Let's not be so simple minded.

    • Posted By: markpt @ 10/17/2008 5:28:59 PM

You sound just as ignorant as who you are commenting on.

Ah. The "I'm rubber and you're glue" ploy. Touche.

There was nothing ignorant about his post. It was filled with actual facts, something anathema to a Con.

Are you not an American? Do you not beleve in religous freedom? Do you not value that you can be a cristian and be free from persicution? Laws are suposed to be blind to religion to protect those cristian values you and I hold so dear. Just a thought

    • Posted By: rmoore36 @ 10/17/2008 6:01:31 PM

Simple minded? I have heard Obama state that he is a christian and that he believes in Jesus Christ.
All muslims believe in Jesus Christ but the difference between a christian and a muslim or other denominations is that christians will state their belief as "Jesus is the son of God." HUGE DIFFERENCE!
In Israel a temple stands that writes "GOD DOES NOT NEED A SON". As for the late term abortion or any abortion - please read OBAMA, there is no middle ground between pro-life and pro-choice fundamental view points. Thank you McCain for stating with your quotes "mother's health". It is what it is......AMERICA once again abusing terms to justify their selfish and immoral acts. It's amazing that animals have more rights in America than unborn children. We abuse an animal and it's made news coverage but everyday
children are thrown to the side and left to die but because we won't state murder but pro choice we
lay our heads down at night and sleep. People face jail time for drowning puppies or kittens that they
don't want. WOW America WAKE UP!
      than unborn children.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 10/17/2008 6:23:44 PM

There's no such thing as "unborn children". You wasted all your time basing your rambling aimless post on a false premise.

Health of the mother?? What about health of the baby??? The hypocrisy is just sickening. I was a pro-choice as the next person until I got pregnant; the second I saw the baby's heartbeat at 9 DAYS, I couldn't believe anyone could kill their child. Rape/incest cases, MAYBE. But in any case--that child didn't choose to be conceived. Women need to take responsibility for the actions, even if they have they unintended results. GROW UP. I don't blame McCain one iota for the air quotes. "Health" of the mother, except in rare instances, is too subjective and frankly, a pretty lame rationalization for women who don't have the moral fibre to confront the choices they've made.

    • Posted By: youngandhopeful @ 10/17/2008 7:19:03 PM

SO are you saying that women who are raped or the victims of incest made a choice to be? Because that is what it sounds like. I take it then that you have NEVER been raped or in the position of incest. Don't judge such circumstances unless they have happened to you. Also you apparently haven't been in the position to have to choose based on health , abuse or other circumstances. You comments are ugly and close-minded. What happened to compassion and caring. Maybe if you opened your heart to people in these situations and felt empathy for their situations you might have a different outlook .Or if you simply knew someone who had to face this choice you might feel differently.

      • Posted By: Ang-i-la @ 10/17/2008 8:11:16 PM

There are women who are raped, and get pregnant who bring the baby to term and give it up for adoption. I know a few. I have talked to them face to face. There are 2 in my family. They made a choice. And it is because of their moral fiber that they did it.
That being said, I don't disagree with abortion in the case of incest or rape. But those should be done VERY early on. As soon as the pregnancy is discovered if it is going to be done.

  • Posted By: insideofme@hotmail.com @ 10/17/2008 7:45:51 PM

seems like america became a murders, because everybody is with the abortion. they don't care to kill a baby that is very helpless, and innocent. i guess the later is that women going out to have a good time, they get pregnant, and then they going for abortion, and the plan for obama is to take the money tout of the tax payers to perform those abortions. of course he is a moslin, and he does not care about the killing.

    • Posted By: lildiamond @ 10/17/2008 8:09:52 PM

You obviously are not an educated American. Perhaps spell check should be utilized next time if you'd like to sound like an informed individual. In regards to your statement, you are mistaken on numerous fronts..I pose this question to you: What is a young girl to do if she is raped by a family member, and made pregnant? Is she to have this baby? What about if your daughter, or yur sister, were raped and got pregnant? IT IS NOT GOVERNMENT'S RIGHT TO FORCE PARENTHOOD UPON ITS CITIZENS!

Seventy five percent of American Catholics actively practice birth control, despite what the Church teaches. This does not make them bad Catholics. It makes them good Catholics who disagree with the Church on this issue.

In 20 years as a doctor I don't think I have ever had one woman who requested abortion do so without crying. To think that women make this decision casually or without a conscience is ridiculous.

And I have seen some tragic outcomes when women who needed abortions for medical reasons refused to get them for religious reasons. Very sad. Life is not all black and white. We need to be able to distinguish subtle shades of gray and therefore make informed decisions in our lives, rather than desperately clinging to our opinions regardless of reality.

    • Posted By: youngandhopeful @ 10/17/2008 8:06:06 PM

Well said. Life is full of gray and there are in fact tragic situation which occur in which abortion is the best option.

  • Posted By: ltb8 @ 10/17/2008 7:55:35 PM

Murders are those that shoot and kill people on the street. Not those that make decisions within their legal rights. If someone has to make the decision to have an abortion, it is usually not something that they want to consider or want to do. America was founded on freedom; freedom to have the right to choose. Saying you want that choice, does not make you a murderer and does not mean you are pro-abortion -- what it does is that you are pro the right to chose. It means you are pro a woman's right to decide what happens to her body and what happens in her life.

    • Posted By: vg98 @ 10/17/2008 8:04:40 PM

What about the rights of the unborn women? Shouldn't they have a right to choose life for themselves?

  • Posted By: pusscat @ 10/17/2008 2:46:27 PM

The very first thing OBAMA needs to do is force insurance companies to pay for birth control. They pay for Viagra!

I do not believe in abortion for the sole purpose of birth control. I do however, believe that I have no right to tell anyone what to do with their own bodies.

Any pro-lifer that is so worried about the unborn, why can't they go help the ones that are already here that are neglected, abused, and not wanted? Take in a 10 year old rape victim. Take in a 6 month old with HIV. They are already here. They need your help.

I was told at 24 weeks that my baby had no brain. Only a brain stem. Her heart was beating, which meant that she could survive for an undetermined amount of time. I made the most difficult choice in my life. I WANTED to bury my daughter, but due to these pro-life idiots and they're delusion that they know everything and have the right to interfere, I was not allowed by the State. I had to go to an abortion clinic and be treated like an animal.

Obama will force everyone to do exactly as he wants. That is what Socialism is all about. Hitler was good at it and so is the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

What do you think the bailout was? Was that democracy or socialism?

        • Posted By: Jim Johnson @ 10/17/2008 3:25:39 PM

Socialism, you fool. It should have been handled through capitalistic methods rather than having the government so involved. We are an intelligent, determined society that should always look for ways to solve problems without the government dealing out taxpayers money to the corrupt, evil people in America. I hope the government goes after all the guilty and hang them by their balls or uterus.

          • Posted By: Trishalish @ 10/17/2008 4:22:06 PM

Only socialist countries outlaw abortion.. Letting government control womens bodies is socialism, stop contradicting yourself in one sentence. At least do it in two.

I support Choice but question the reasons for the choice. I don't ever want women to have to go back to the days of back-room abortions but I would like to have faith that women are really making a choice that affects their health and not just for convenience. Late term abortions should never be performed unless it's absolutely a matter of life or death because, after all, it is death for a usually viable birth.

    • Posted By: shorty22 @ 10/17/2008 8:02:32 PM

Thank you! I dont like or agree with abortions But please dont give up a womans right to make that choice it is a fundemental right regardless of how you personaly feel.

this woman that has her uterous like grapes, is very stupid, and ignorant. what senator mccain had to do with her pregnancy? whaT HAPPENED WAS THAT MAY BE SHE TRAYED TO ABORT THE BABY, and now she is blaming senator mccain, for what she was goinf through.

    • Posted By: artemis8 @ 10/17/2008 7:59:35 PM

you obviously did not read her comment fully. she lost 4 children to a serious illness, then her and her husband tried to have more children. it is clear to anyone with a brain, which is not you, that she wanted children, but ended up with a grave health condition. i don't think anyone would try to give themselves a tumor, which could kill them. by the way, YOU CAN'T GIVE YOURSELF A TUMOR OR MAKE ONE FORM, unless you're a smoker

    • Posted By: youngandhopeful @ 10/17/2008 7:42:42 PM

I think your comment is very close minded and disrespectful to the circumstance she was going through. You should be ashamed at being so cold towards her. You didn't go through it and you don't know what it is like so.

  • Posted By: starwatcher777 @ 10/17/2008 6:13:15 PM

I would very much be interested in knowing at what point of the pregnancy does the fetus start to have appreciable brain activity. I am no expert by any means, but that would seem to be a fairly logical place to start considering the fetus "human".

    • Posted By: Ang-i-la @ 10/17/2008 7:59:29 PM

The vital organs -- the liver, kidneys, intestines, brain, and lungs -- are fully formed and functional, while the head is almost half the length of the entire body. The forehead temporarily bulges and sits high on the head, but later will change into a more human-like feature. That is by week 10. The heartbeat can be heard on ultrasound by week 5. During week 9 fingerprints develop. Every human being has a unique set of fingetprints.By week 14 gender is determined.

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 10/17/2008 6:16:39 PM

What is "appreciable brain activity"? This doesn't solve anything because then you have to define that somehow.

      • Posted By: shorty22 @ 10/17/2008 7:40:02 PM

You can have brain activity and not be able to support life...

  • Posted By: Taxpaying Workingman @ 10/17/2008 7:59:21 PM

One more point. Obama supports the 'rights' of schools and drs to hide procedures done to and on girls of a minor age if they have to do with reproduction. A school nurse would be arrested for giving an asprin to a student w/out written parental consent. But the Dems support any reproductive procedures/surgery w/out parental information or permission. This is utter insanity. Eleven yr old girls who are pregnant should be investigated by the state dept of child welfare and protection- and so should their parents. Whoever got them into this state should be held accountable. Obama wants to aid in covering up child molestation, by supporting government funded abortions, on demand and held secret from parents. Lunacy.

  • Posted By: gotohorse @ 10/17/2008 7:58:46 PM

How many times is this extreme late term abortion really happening. I can't believe that it is very much and that 99% of the women wouldn't have this procedure unless she would die and leave her other children and husband.

Are we just fighting about something that it is put forward as a distraction to make the pro-choice people sound like they don't appreciate the seriousness of abortion of any type?

As Obama said no one I know is pro-abortion only pro-choice even when they would never exercise that option.

  • Posted By: ltb8 @ 10/17/2008 7:58:21 PM

If you are antiabortion. where did you see this child ripped limb by limb apart and why didn't you stop it?

  • Posted By: Tommypie @ 10/17/2008 7:45:34 PM

To have a live birth abortion performed a day or so before delivery is permissible if the mother to be has a cold, a hang nail, a litle down in the dumps, or any other "health" issue. "Health of the mother" is jut a code name for "anything goes". Trust me. I have witnessed enough of these so called "health issue" abortions.

    • Posted By: artemis8 @ 10/17/2008 7:54:26 PM

so, you work in a place that allows abortions???

  • Posted By: Desdmona @ 10/17/2008 7:46:26 PM

Roe v. Wade is one of the first laws that gave women the right to control their own reproductive system. Which is a right they should have had all along. I'm not Pro-Life nor Pro-Choice. I am extremely angry at each of our candidates for even thinking of spealing on this subject. I do not feel it is up to our law makers to speak to something that should be between a woman, her family and her higher power. The steady erosion of this right is unthinkable. Late term, post term they are all catch phrases used to describe medical proceedures that are beyond most of our understaning. LEAVE IT ALONE. Every woman has a right to safe reproductive services that are again, between her and her doctor and no one else. How dare these people think they speak for me! Dhave either of them carried life in their bodies??? I dont thiink so. Until a man can carry life he should have NO right to speak for those who do or deny them the reproductive services that they so dearly deserve!

  • Posted By: Nins @ 10/17/2008 7:41:45 PM

I am a Catholic and I strongly believe in the separation of Church and State. I am very concerned about McCain's stated intention of appointing more religious right judges to the Supreme Court with the goal of overturning Roe v, Wade. McCain discusses this goal on his website, and has mentioned it in speeches on numerous occasions.

Even though I personally don't think abortion is acceptable, I do think that reproductive rights are civil rights. Ask the women in China whose second children have been taken away how much they would like to control their reproductive rights. Or the Mormon teenagers who were forced into "marriages" below the age of consent. Without reproductive rights, life can become very dismal indeed.

Right now, five of the nine Supreme Court Justices are Catholic. We have a CATHOLIC MAJORITY in the Supreme Court. Four of these Justices (Scalia, Alito, Thomas and Roberts) have consistently voted a conservative anti-abortion ticket. The fifth Catholic Justice (Kennedy) is a moderate, who sometimes votes in favor of abortion rights, sometimes against. Justice Stevens, a liberal on abortion, is 88 years old. Justice Ginsburg, another liberal on abortion, is 75. Kennedy, the centrist Catholic, is 72. Chances are good, given their ages, that at least one of them will die or retire during the term of the next President. And if our next President is McCain, presto-chango, we suddenly have a Supreme Court that is controlled by conservative Catholics.

Even though I am a Catholic who is against abortion, I can see the dangers of the highest court in the land interpreting the law through narrow eyes. This can't be good for America. Why not let the Protestants, the Jews or the Baptists control the Supreme Court? That sounds pretty ridiculous, doesn't it? Or how about the Buddhists (they might actually be more impartial). Perhaps we should hand over the Supreme Court to a Muslim majority? That would make us all scream, wouldn't it? Having a conservative Catholic majority is just as bad, if you stop to think about it.

Why can't people just mind there own damn business... at the end of the day whatever decision you make about YOUR BODY is between YOU and GOD...no one else.
