That Lewis accused McCain of being like Wallace is to ignore what Lewis actually said. Of course it was playing the race card in the worst way; not much different than Florida Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings pointed to Sarah Palin on Wednesday to rally Jews to Obama.
"If Sarah Palin isn???t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention," said Hastings. "Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don???t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through."

C'mon. the "just words" comment was about "terrorists" instead of "a terrorist". Singular vs. plural. That was obvious to me. It wasn't to you??

What happened to the republican apparatus. In the previous two elections, all this crap that Palin spews would have stuck and altered the course of the election. has everyone finally realized the moral bankruptcy of such a course of action? Good for us. There's hope.

    My thanks to David Letterman.

This is not the first time, nor, hopefully, will it be the last time, that our comics have asked our questions for us. And made us laugh. It took a career to put Letterman in the right place at the right time, but he used it to our best advantage. Bravo!

How about McCain and G. Gordon LIddy? Why are Todd and Sarah Palin being given a pass on their association with the Alaska Independence Party-their very recent and active association, with an organization founded on hatred of the United States? Good on Letterman, can someone else with some guts stand up and ask these questions?

Now, with less than three weeks to the end, he comes to the country staggering toward defeat, his pride and honor certainly diminished by the incoherence of his campaign and the absurdity of the choice he agreed to when it came to picking someone who would share a national ticket charged with talking, coaxing, massaging the country through a tough and turbulent time. And as the clock winds toward the conclusion, America looks and listens to a different John McCain than the man who captured so many hearts when he first ran for president, only eight years ago.

That guy is MIA, missing in action, held captive by ideologues who dominate his strategy sessions and what is left of the Republican party. So John McCain sat there on the stage at Hofstra Wednesday night, looking and sounding like an angry old man, bitter at the lack of traction -- or belief -- in his candidacy, uncomfortable with what he has allowed himself to become: a cranky senior citizen seething with resentment over how his glory days are lost in the long shadow cast by youth and change.

It is a sad story: a proud and independent man permits a handful of advisers to take his hard-earned reputation and alter it to such an extent that the original is now hard to recognize, nearly invisible behind a curtain of cynical ads and the preposterous pronouncements of a woman whose candidacy is an insult to intelligence.

John McCain used to know that the country was larger than any crowd he could ever draw; that it was filled with ordinary people who live their lives in the middle of a political spectrum, too busy making ends meet, to be driven to extremes by the fevers and fears that consume so many of the talk-radio set. He used to be aware that in order to win, a candidate could not simply preach to the converted, snarl and run with a resentment aimed at the fringe, the mixed mobs of the curious and angry that turn out for Palin.

    Continued Below

  • Posted By: braindrainedmccain @ 10/17/2008 6:54:04 PM

Now, with time running out, he has only a few days left to try and reclaim himself, to find the man he once was, the whole man who could charm a crowd with his version of the truth. He criss-crosses a country filling up with fear and debt, a land fighting two wars as it fights for a weekly paycheck, a nation where more people worry about General Motors than think about General Petraeus. Political campaigns, like much of life itself, often revolve around one universal issue: the absence of money.

So, when John McCain tosses out a name from yesterday, William Ayers, it means nothing to people who want only to be told about tomorrow. These are the people who vote, the people who have seen the distant dream of retirement crushed by the collapse of so many 401K's in -- what? -- less than a month. They have no time for spite or a candidate's smirk or snarl. They are consumed with concern for the value of their home, the stability of their job, the immediate future of their family.

Unfortunately for McCain, he did little to stop the thieves who took his honor and reputation and tossed it out like so many discarded items for a yard sale, figuring that Americans could once again -- one more time -- be fooled into voting their fears. But what they really did was take the one Republican who may have had a legitimate shot at surviving the disaster that has been the Bush administration and strip him of the basic appeal he once had for people looking for someone who could lead.

The dreary dialogue of the past few weeks has finally managed to make the man look his age, look old and tired and embarrassed to be defending Palin while awkwardly injecting the absurd -- Ayers -- into the national dialogue when nearly everyone is riveted on the obvious: the family budget.

Soon, the Straight Talk Express will bank west and head for the Arizona desert and election eve. And John McCain will sit up front, staring out the window, exhausted, as the plane crosses the land he loves and the people -- millions of them -- he failed to connect with because while he was once indeed a prisoner of war, he has spent the last ten weeks letting himself become a prisoner of the past.

Pot and Kettle. Ellis Cose has been one of a legion of self-described ''journalists''who have totally and completely given Obama and Biden a free pass in this election. Few know that Bidens son and brother for one example, are being investigated and sued for fraud. Bidens own ties to credit card giants that are helping to wreck Americas fortunes are another. Ted Stevens gets big hay play on the media circuit as we see from NEXXIS searches. Charles Rangel,Democrat Chairman of the House Ways and Means committee, one of Washingtons most powerful, does not. [indeed,to date,NEWSWEAK has failed to run a single story on the federal investigation and ethics hearings surrounding this longtime pol which they would have passed fifty stories by now had Rangel been GOP].
Cose does not bother to explain how he is going to apologize to a segment of the American people who his journalistic peers labeled ''dangerous'' and ''racist''in the wake of the Palin speech in Scranton,Pa. in which someone was alleged to have shouted ''kill him''in reference to Obama, which we now know, thanks to a detailed Secret Service investigation, was a lie manufactured by the media itself.
Todays Wall St. Journal had the guts to confront what an Obama/Democrat Congress presidency will look like.

But you Ellis, have done nothing in this regard,as you are a partisan and thus cannot be trusted to deliver impartial verdict. Indeed, all of you operate in a partisan vaccum. Television late night comics[who all back Obama], Television pundits[who have as guests those from your own NEWSWEAK],to provide amen-chorus backup. Big city editors and station chiefs who are all pulling for Obama. The sheer weight of an entire nations news, information and entertainment branches save isolated examples[whom the Democrats will move to silence here shortly, setting up one of the first great challenges to the 1st Amendment in coming months],that act as surrogates for one candidate, filtering and disseminating the news they desire that you see , hear and read.[as I pointed out in response to Clifts article on the GOP ''Dark Side''].
I have no idea at this time which is more dangerous. An all-Democrat government,or an American press that acts as adminsitration shill and poodle.

But since you never give a honest assessment...
Leave the press alone. With your constant judgement - why do you even judge? And for heavens sake stop calling people partisan when you are.

Obama's view of the future of America - Socialism which is the next step to Communism!! He admitted to Joe the Plumber than he wanted to spread the wealth! He said that he wanted to make everyone equal! Is America ready for Socialism? The Iranian president, Ahmadinejad, said today that he is glad to see the end to capitalism in America!! Are you glad?????
    ====================================================================================================

Under socialism a ruling class of intellectuals, bureaucrats and social planners decide what people want or what is good for society and then use the coercive power of the State to regulate, tax, and redistribute the wealth of those who work for a living. In other words, socialism is a form of legalized theft.

The morality of socialism can be summed-up in two words: envy and self-sacrifice. Envy is the desire to not only possess another's wealth but also the desire to see another's wealth lowered to the level of one's own. Socialism's teaching on self-sacrifice was nicely summarized by two of its greatest defenders, Hermann Goering and Bennito Mussolini. The highest principle of Nazism (National Socialism), said Goering, is: "Common good comes before private good." Fascism, said
Mussolini, is "a life in which the individual, through the sacrifice of his own private interests??realizes that completely spiritual existence in which his value as a man lies."

Socialism is the social system which institutionalizes envy and self-sacrifice: It is the social system which uses compulsion and the organized violence of the State to expropriate wealth from the producer class for its redistribution to the parasitical class.

Despite the intellectuals' psychotic hatred of capitalism, it is the only moral and just social system.

Capitalism is the only moral system because it requires human beings to deal with one another as traders--that is, as free moral agents trading and selling goods and services on the basis of mutual consent.

Capitalism is the only just system because the sole criterion that determines the value of thing exchanged is the free, voluntary, universal judgement of the consumer. Coercion and fraud are anathema to the free-market system.

It is both moral and just because the degree to which man rises or falls in society is determined by the degree to which he uses his mind. Capitalism is the only social system that rewards merit, ability and achievement, regardless of one's birth or station in life.

    Yes, there are winners and losers in capitalism. The winners are those who are honest, industrious, thoughtful, prudent, frugal, responsible, disciplined, and efficient. The losers are those who are shiftless, lazy, imprudent, extravagant, negligent, impractical, and inefficient. [What about the role of luckbeing in the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time? R. R. Pope}

We don't HAVE that kind of "capitalism", Jim, and perhaps we never did. We have crony capitalism, where a member of the ruling aristocracy, with credentials from the "right" schools and the proper connections to selected officials can rise to become CEO of a great corporation, run it into the ground, and descend safely to the Bahamas on a golden parachute of millions of dollars of pillaged loot. We have crony capitalism, where the revolving doors between Congress, regulatory commissions, and the industries they are purportedly "regulating" are spinning so fast they could power electric generators...industry buys favors in advance with campaign contributions to elected officials, and after the fact, with cushy jobs for previously friendly appointed officials. We have crony capitalism, where the VP meets with a cabal of oil company lackeys, in secret, to contrive energy policy for the Administration in office, and where, when the bricks come tumbling down in the "free market" economy, the taxpayers are compelled to bail out the banks, insurance companies and other corporations who allegedly fumbled the ball (or did they just roll it quietly into their own nest-eggs?)... profit is private, but loss to the elites must be shared.

That isn't capitalism. Thats economic fascism...which is, of course, one of the worst species of socialism. If this is what you are afraid of "losing" during an Obama Administration, I'd say your values are a little confused.

      Republicans for Obama!

Spread the Wealth is an old right-wing code phrase for communism/socialism. It`s supposed to strike fear into the hearts of voters when thrown around. It isn`t striking the fear they hoped it would. Maybe voters are really paying attention this election.

      Dear Jim,
Obviously you are a Republicanthrough and through and can only see through your red glasses and your conservative narrow-minded lenses. How sad that you cannot see the way non americans are looking at the McCain-Palin duo push back politics even further into the muddy quagmire of racism, hatred and overall spitefullness. Sarah Palin is a sad case of overzealous, misguided evangelical zealotry at its worst. Her $40 Billion pipeline is turning into just a dream and her power hungry aspirations are going down with it. Hopefully the good US citizens will redemm themselves from the horrific choices they made in electing GW Bush, not once but twice and having him run the country in such a way as it is now perceived as a degenerate Rome in its final throes of failed leadership

The sub header of this piece is "Facing Facts". I find it interesting that Republicans will go to such extremes to not Face the Facts that they are losing. That McCain is incompetent and erratic. They don't want to admit or face up to the fact that Obama has out-campaigned him in a huge way. That he has done so without sinking to their depths of hatred and malice.

Yes, he stretches some facts to typify points and carcaritures, but he doesn't call McCain out on what he did to other VietVets by going onto VietCong radio. He doesn't talk about the fact that McCain has drug addiction problems because of his pain management. He doesn't talk about the fact that McCain has ties to right wing organizations that rival Ayers Underground group. That is class which McCain doesn't have and ethics he obviously has given up to serve his political ambitions.

FACE UP TO THE FACTS! YOU ARE LOSING! Obama has simply out-classed McCain and it shows.

    [edit] Watergate burglaries
For his role in Watergate, which he coordinated with Hunt, Liddy was convicted of conspiracy, burglary and illegal wiretapping, and received a 20-year sentence. He served a total of five and half years in prison, including over 100 days in solitary confinement, before his sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter and he was released on September 7, 1977.

    [edit] Advice to listeners
Liddy is noted for controversial advice to his radio audience, including on one occasion in 1994, after the federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, Liddy advised his listeners: "Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. ... Kill the sons of ***."

[edit] Liddy's connections to John McCain
In 1998 Liddy hosted a fundraiser at his house for John McCain's re-election campaign at which guests could have their pictures taken with McCain and Liddy.[6] Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 in 2008.

Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain said "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family." "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

Obama's record hasn't only been given "a pass", it has been held as a closely guarded secret by the vast majority of the media. Try asking him about Redlining Lawsuits, 3/4ths of a million to ACORN, Alice Palmer, The Woodlawn Organization, Tony Rezko on his Finance Committee for a start..

Newsweek...News or Biased partisan BS? I would have guessed news from the name, but apparently the name of a product does not have to actually reflect what's inside.

Funny how Ellis gives Obama a pass on the Ayers affiliation, and condemns Palin's comments but supports Smith's comments trying to link McCain to racism. Ellis also fails to correctly not that Lewis should have a great big -D after his name and is, as such, is trying to engage in partisan politics and rev-up the big Democratic hate and fear machine.

I cannot believe that the news market supports these clowns that pass themselves off as writers. Once again, I hope this type of third rate clown journalism only proves that my six-figure columnist position is just around the corner. Apparently, any idiot can get a job at Newsweek.
